☉ TAEWON IS AT PEARL CENTER

he dreams.

he dreams of a life long gone.

he dreams of happiness.

he dreams of red.

he wakes up in cold sweat. it takes him a moment to remember where he is - or more precisely where he isn't. he lets out a sigh. he can hear noise behind the door and the smell of freshly brewed coffee dances around him. the soft, barely-heard singing of his brother brings a warm smile to his lips, but it's not enough to forget the nightmare.

he sits on the bed, wiping his sweat with his forearm. the books on his desk catch his eyes, piles and piles of science books and anatomy materials - just enough to occupy his brain until the finals. and now that his last final was over, the nightmares were back.

he's seen red. but this red doesn't wash away, no matter how many tears he cries.

the slow melody of a ringtone pushes the dark thoughts away. he grabs his phone on the nightstand and his eyes widen.

one second.

two seconds.

red.

"hello ?" he answers.

"hyung..."

he stands. the voice is soft. it knows it woke him up. his stomach churns. red.

"hey. how are you feeling ?"
"good! i- yeah i'm good. are you done with your finals ? i'm sure you did amazing!"
"yeah, i'm done. just need to graduate and i'll come see you."
"... do you know when ?"

a pause.

"in a couple of months, i guess ?"

a pause. unease.

"hyung ?"

a pause. something doesn't feel right.

"hyung, come back please."

he stays frozen as the plea is followed by the sound of the call ending. there's something unsettling. his instinct is screaming at him to leave, to join the voice. the voice was calm but eerie. he feels danger and a violent desire to protect. he needs to go back to simdong. he doesn't know why yet, but he has to.

he closes his eyes and sighs.

he dreams.

he dreams of red.

FULL NAME nam taewon.
OTHER NAMES
LITTLE FISH. a lovely nickname given by his father a few years after he was born.
ARIEL. hearing this name was for taewon a signal to get out of the water. though it can be thought as a mocking term, taewon loves it because his older brother is the only one who called him that. he still remembers the loving tone and the warm laugh that followed.

BIRTHDATE 0205, 26 y.o.
ETHNICITY korean.

GENDER male.
UALITY biual.
FACECLAIM lee dohyun

STATURE 185cm.
APPEARANCE a long lanky figure stands in front of the mirror. longish hair fall in front of his eyes, a haircut long overdue but the bags under his eyes clearly show he has something else to do. he stands straight, glasses perched on the bridge of his nose. dark brown eyes stare back at him, before he checks his overall appearance. he's lost some weight in the last couple of years, but he's still at a good average for his height. thanks to snu's cafeteria and gym, he's managed to stay lean and healthy. he's been told he's handsome but honestly, in his eyes, he's just like any random guy his age.

STYLE
taewon usually takes care of himself, but he's a very boring guy. tight jeans and comfy woolen pullover, dark pants and simple shirts, that's a normal day for him. he doesn't own many clothes. his general style is classic chic, but honestly... just give him something with discreet colors and a comfortable aura, that's the only thing he needs.
PERSONALITY

THE LOGISTICIAN - ISTJ-A.
patient + calm + observant + strong-willed + responsible + direct
stubborn - insensitive - overworked - private - selfish - judgmental

if anything, taewon was a wallflower. from the beginning of his life in simdong, he was the middle son of the local doctor, a cute and shy boy. he was just... there. everyone knew him but no one knew him at the same time. they just expected him to be there and he grew up being fine with that. for a long time, he felt like the lighthouse keeper : a forgotten essential.

back then, he liked a simple life. give him a book, a cup of coffee and the sound of waves and he is happy. one thing people remember about him is his open smile. ever the polite guy, he'd always answer to greeting with a warm smile, stay a couple of minutes for chitchat and leave with a friendly wave. he's fine handling social meetings for ten minutes but past that, he starts getting fidgety. he doesn't mind being the center of the attention but he's a champion at diverting it to someone else. he was very shy and humble when it came to himself. compliments made him turn red and he's quick to say that it's not that great.

with others, taewon was a listener and a good secret keeper. growing up, he wanted to be a teacher and it wasn't hard to know why. taewon gave his all to others. despite not being the oldest brother of his family, he has the aura of a big brother. when you managed to get past his friendly aura and get accepted in his circle, you'd find yourself with a knight in shining armor. when he was younger, he would run errands and help his father with his practice until late at night and just felt happy knowing he made others happy.

his little brother's accident changed everything. he doubted his self-worth a lot and to forget about the guilt, he threw himself in work. gone was the joyful and helpful child. nothing mattered except his family. everyone else ? just petty distractions. his life in college was nothing like his life in simdong. gone were the helpful people, on was the competition. he had always been a hardworking student but it was not enough for a prestigious college like seoul national university. his life was nothing but studying. he gave up on social life and his social skills went to the drain. he became cold and distant. he's polite, obviously, but if he judges you're not worth his time, he'll make you know. someone people in school have said he acted all mighty and conceited just because he was part of the top grades. and in a way, he was conceited : he knows his self-worth, he's confident enough in his own abilities to know what he can and can do ; but if he knows he can do it, he'll do it. he's not one to back down from a challenge.

his training as a medical student also brought a very logical side to him. even though he used to be a dreamer, being thrown into the medical world changed him. he's calm and collected and doesn't get panicky. he feels stress and tension but uses them as a way to focus. he's not likely to lose his cool in any kind of situation. his years of studying made him someone who relies on cold logic. he hardly believes in magic anymore, only in pure facts. years of hard work made him someone who never gives up but it also made him very stubborn. he knows what he knows and even though he would take every opinion into account, he would reject anything that is incorrect or would just fail. he will be blunt about it as well. if you're stupid, you're stupid.

yet deep down, he's not thrown away everything from his past life. he's lost so much and he almost lost someone he loved very much and this traumatized him. this feeling of helplessness is one he never wants to feel again and that's why he did everything he could to bring out the best of himself. he is still a child at heart, wanting to bring his family together and scared less to lose someone he loves. despite the cold, smiless face he gives, the moment he looks at his father or his brothers, it's impossible to miss the warm, longing smile and how relaxed his body becomes. he's not a bad person, he's just too scared and prefers pushing people away before experiencing any kind of heartbreak. he's loyal to a fault and he is deeply respectful of hardwork and pain. if he sees someone struggling despite putting their all, he'll find a way to help them. and if he sees someone he cares about break down, he'll definitely have a hard time ignoring them.

he's fine with being the self-centered, judgmental if it means he'll be able to do what he needs perfectly. and no matter what people can say, they'll soon realize that being a doctor is something he does for others and not himself. maybe coming back to simdong is what he needs to go back to what he once was : a dreamer who likes taking care of others.

BACKGROUND
in a house near the sea lives a man and his wife. life is great. the wind rises softly to tussle the lady's long black hair, until a wild lock reaches the man and tickles his cheek. a giggle. a sigh. that is what happiness feels like.

and then there were two.

in a house near the sea live a man, his wife and their young boy. peaceful sunrises are replaced by the loud steps of an adventurer. the young child loves noise, he likes playing and running. he dreams of exploring the world, of watching ten sunrises from ten different spots. the house is filled with stories of space and lightning, of dreams for the future.

and then there were three.

in a house near the sea live a man, his wife and their young boys. one laughter became two and peaceful moments became rare in the house. like fire and water, sun and moon, two spirits are polar opposites yet cannot be seen without one another. one still dreams of travels while the other stays close to the familiar salty smell of the sea. one is a bird in the sky while the other seems more like a fish in the sea. yet, drawn be a bond even thicker than blood, the tumultuous seagull always come back to check on his favorite fish to make sure no one hurts him. the two adults watch with sparkling eyes the loves of their lives enjoying their happiness.

and then there were four.

in a house near the sea live a man, his wife and their young boys. the hot days brought another laughter to their door. the seagull and the fish welcome with joy their new companion and show him the world. both of them are too grown to follow each of the young fox's antics but their hearts are big enough for him to at least try. laughter is followed by tears as their reckless friend bites off more than he can chew, but in the air or in water, they are here to help him. the man knows enough to help treat their wounds when they get too reckless and his wife is thankful that this knowledge is theirs to keep. the three boys grow up watching in awe their father work his magic on them but also on all the people from the houses far from the sea. life is filled with happiness.

and then there were five.

in a house near the sea live a man, his wife and their boys. loud laughters have been replaced by long talks and shouts. the seagull feels trapped and wants to fly away. he has never forgotten his wish to get on an adventure, but he's not the only one who should decide. but why wouldn't he be ? it's his life, his future. but after yet another fight, the seagull goes back to the fish and the fox with a heavy heart. each tears they shed feels like a knife to the heart but his dream is stronger. one day, the seagull has decided. he will live their little family to go to those big cities to study and live his own life, now that he's old enough. the youngest is the bravest, and because the fish has known him for a longer time, he can't let go this easily. the seagull leaves with a promise : they'll see each other again.

and then there were four.

in a house near the sea live a man, his wife and their boys. the long talks have disappeared but the shouts are still here. as the fox sleeps next to him, his fur wet with tears, the fish holds back. when he goes to the village, he hears people whispering about the man's wife. he hears them say that she was seen with someone else. he is old enough to understand but he doesn't want to. evenings are filled with heavy sighs and a tired man, but when the fish and the fox talk, they are met with a warm smile and a pat on the head. the wife leaves with no promise.

and then there were three.

in a house near the sea live a man and his boys. it takes a while, but laughter is invited in the household again. the fish has grown up and has decided to leave his dear water to help the man. he learns many things and takes pride in seeing the smiles of the villagers. a proud smile welcomes him every day and the fish feels his scales shine brighter and brighter. the man teaches everything he knows and the little fish dreams of the day he'll take over and be the one who helps everyone. he wants to be just like his father. every once in a while, the seagull sends him a letter of his travels and the sun invites himself again in his life. taking care of the fox alone is harder but the fox does everything in his power to help as well. the villagers like the fish very much. they talk about him, about his future, they even want to introduce him to their daughters which makes him blush. he likes it here, but his fox friend is so much like the seagull. he dreams of adventure as well, fueled by the stories their old friend sends them. on a hot summer day, the fox tells him that he wants to go on an adventure with his friends, a roadtrip to discover the coast and have fun before the new school year. he leaves with a promise : he'll come back in two months.

and then there were two.

in a house near the sea live an old man and his boy. the big house feels lonely without the cries of the seagull and the chirps of the fox, so the fish feels himself longing for an old friend, the sea. he doesn't understand his brothers' thirst for adventure when the blue sea is welcoming them so near. in between the waves, he forgets about all and remains a boy for another minute. one night, as the air feels chilly, he hears that the fox is close. the phone call that should have left him delighted that he comes back even before his promise, instead shows him a panicked father. when he goes with him to meet the fox, the fish is met with tears and blood. the only thing he sees is red. red everywhere. he has seen many colors of the sunrise, but it is the first time he's seen so much red. the fox smiles at him but all the fish can see is the unshed tears. the fox is hurting so bad. the car he and his friends used got involved in an accident that the fox did not escape from. the fox cries as he's told that he'll never be able to run again. he turns to the man for help and is met with stone cold resignation. he can't do anything. the fish screams. what good is it to make people smile if he can't make the fox smile as well ? all he feels is anger, frustration and a new goal appears to him. this will never happen again. and if he has to leave, he'll do it. when the fish leaves their house near the sea, he promises to the fox : he'll come back and make him smile.

and then there was one.

in a house away from the sea lives a man. he has forgotten what the sound of the waves is like. the salty smell has been replaced by the acid stench of chemicals. he is getting used to all the red but his nights are filled by a familiar red that is making him wake up drenched in sweat. when the seagull hears what happened, he comes to get the fish and help him. weeks turn into months, months turn into years. he learns everything he can get. his old man's plants are by far his favorites but he knows they're not enough, so he will learn until he is the best. for a while, he is happy, but the nightmares keep on reminding him of his promise. he will come back.

even if it is the end of him.

and then there were none.

LIFESTYLE
in simdong, taewon was the cute little boy who helped his father in his practice. he loved spending time with him learning and the people of simdong liked thinking of him as the cute assistant of the doctor. his father was very proud of him and he enjoyed teaching him whatever he knew. sometimes it was hard, and it broke his heart to see his little fish barely going out with others his age just to be able to help him. but taewon liked it. he left for school early, brought his brother with him, studied and then life to join his father. during the few hours of his father kicked him away so he could actually be a little boy, he would go swim at the beach and have fun in the water. with his older brother donghyun and little brother jongin dreaming of travels and adventures, he was the obvious choice to take over their father's practice when he gets older. none of his brothers fought this and honestly, they were both relieved that he would take over. they felt bad that he wouldn't get the chance to travel around with them, but they knew that taewon liked the comfort of their little village and he actually liked being a doctor.

in seoul, life was simple and easy. taewon used to live in a small flat with his older brother. he woke up to the sound of his brother singing a catchy pop song  he had heard at the dance studio he worked at and the smell of coffee. their morning was peaceful : they ate together before taewon bid his brother good bye and left for his classes. a shoulder hurting under the weight of heavy books and music in his ears were his companions for years. classes, library, classes, library, he only knew how to do that. he wasn't a socialite and he had a goal. being a top student meant scholarships and meant more sponsors to get his own practice back in simdong. friends ? he didn't have any, he didn't feel like he needed it. his older brother worried about him, but he didn't care. after a tough day studying, he came back late to the flat, always finding a warm meal with a nice note from his brother or the latter himself welcoming him with a smile. life was simple and easy, and he liked it.

coming back to simdong... is tough for him. though he had been waiting for this, he does find that being confronted to the lack of means to practice medicine makes him frustrated. he goes back to live in his childhood house with his father and his baby brother. they find him different, slightly distant. when he goes to help his father set up the practice for him, the residents of simdong find a boy who's purely professionnal. his smiles look awkward, even fake. he does his very best to help everyone and he seems 100% focused on the practice, barely going out.

RELATIONSHIPS

THE MAN AND HIS WIFE.
nam dawon and kim haesoo
taewon loves his father with all his heart. he always thinks of his old man with a fond smile. he remembers a man who always encouraged him, was proud of him. no matter how hard he had worked, he would always find time for them. time had left its mark on him and what was once a bright young man became an old man with wrinkles on his forehead. taewon shares his altruistic side with him - actually, he's probably the one who looks like their father the most. nam dawon is his son's role model and someone he looks up to. taking over the practice is for taewon a way to relieve his father and to let him enjoy his days in peace.

on the other hand, talking about his mother leaves a bitter taste in his mouth. though he did love her very much, he didn't take kindly her cheating and leaving. she left the village when he was 16, old enough to know what the villagers of simdong were whispering about when they thought he wasn't close enough to hear. as for now, he doesn't care about her nor does he want to think about her. he has more important things to do.

THE SEAGULL AND THE FOX.
nam donghyun (28 y.o) and nam jongin (23 y.o)
people usually say that friends are a family that you choose, that those bonds are thicker than blood. but for taewon, his brothers are his everything. in a small town where everyone knows each other, the beach was their sanctuary. he would be ready to give them everything. when donghyun left the house to go to seoul for his studies, the younger brothers were devastated. taewon didn't even think of leaving simdong back then, but then again, knowing his hyung's thirst for travelling, he wasn't surprised. donghyun was always their protector and their hero, so a life without him felt weird. they kept in touch, obviously.

taking care of jongin by himself didn't scare the young boy. even if their baby fox was still a lively teenager, he was obedient and loved his older brother enough not to cause trouble. yet, when the news came that jongin had been involved in car accident during his roadtrip with his friends and that it left him paralyzed from the waist down, taewon felt his world crumble. that was when he realized that his father's plants wouldn't be enough. had the villager jongin was found near had a surgeon, his legs would have been saved - what if something like this happened in simdong? he couldn't bear the thought. leaving for seoul was hard but his father understood. leaving jongin behind was the hardest thing he ever did and he still called him at least three times a week when he was studying. he knew his baby brother felt responsible for his departure but it was for the best, taewon had no regrets.

as for now, they still contact each other very regularly and donghyun and taewon started living together when the latter arrived in seoul. he barely made friends and connections, and no one stuck close enough to be that important to him. their relationship is still as strong as ever and taewon is not sure he needs anyone else but them to be happy.

THE KITTEN.
im yugyeong
simdong is a small village and taewon still remembers the tea shop girl, the one who tried more than a hundred times to make him drink tea to no avail. if the boy was too shy and too in his own world to make friends, yugyeon was still a recurring figure in his life. he remembers jongin coming home from school with stars in his eyes talking about her, which always made him smile. intrigued by the one his baby brother had a crush on, he liked visiting the tea shop to talk to her. rumors went fast in the village and he knew just like her how harmful they can be. for one, a father left, for the other, a mother. if not friends, there was a sense of camaraderie in them and fondness in the few discussions they shared. in a way, taewon felt a bit protective of her, as she reminded him of his younger brother - and maybe he appreciated having a little sister figure in his life, someone who was less reckless than his fox ! she reminded him of a cat, someone who pushed others away and hardly gave her trust, but when she opened up, she was gentle and kind.

THE SHELLFISH.
son jisung (22 y.o)
jisung was a common sight for the young taewon. from school where he would see him when he was picking up jongin or from the dock when he went to buy fish to his family, jisung was a familiar face. taewon remembers a joyful smile and a bright laughter, not too far from his own little brother, and he appreciated the ball of sunshine. too shy and too old to do anything less but watch from afar the youngsters play, he still remembers the fisherboy with a fond smile. as someone who enjoyed swimming and being in the water, he would sometimes see the fishermen's boat and wave at them, knowing that jisung was the one brightly waving back at him from the boat. he would always welcome the young boy with a ruffle of his hair whenever he would show him the huge bag of shellfish he would bring back from his daily catch. whenever he hurt himself, energetic as he was, taewon was usually the one patching him up and sending him on his merry way. jisung reminded him so much of the innocence of his little brother that he often felt the need to protect him if he was close - he wonders if, unlike him, the boy managed to keep his bright innocence and if he would manage to help know what it's like to feel hope again...

would your character be the hero, the damsel in distress, or the villain ? (answer as creator)

he would be the hero, giving his everything to rescue and help others.

would your character say they are the hero, the damsel in distress, or the villain ? (character's answer.)
"a hero ? a hero saves people, right ? nah, that can't be me. i'm fine being a secondary character."
COMMENTS

i don't know how to make it prettier, it's been a while since i dived into source codes so sorry if it's not that pretty ;_; i feel like an old lady, having trouble with technology (i can't get that damn scrolling to work x.x)

so for some reason, a.c.e's merman concept really inspired me so i blame them 100%. that and sweet home as well (cue the face claim). i wanted him to be the soft brother figure who raises to the challenge of simdong unexpectedly :)
