the girl almost left behind

When Kang Nanhee appeared on Kpopstar in 2016 for the very first time, it was more than obvious that she was the product of many years of training.
At age 16 she was moving seducingly as a grown woman on stage, neither JYP nor YG could keep their eyes off of her and the www was as divided as the Korean peninsula.

"Too y! Too cheap! Too young!"

The negative resonance was almost as overwhelming as the positive. Nevertheless, nobody cared anymore after that one performance since Kang Nanhee dropped out of the competition and was never seen again after that. Barely anyone remembers her now and the sad memory is forever kept on YouTube as the last remains of that glimpse of success.

Some may wonder... what happened to that young woman?

Looking back at how everything started, Nanhee now thinks she should have noticed the signs earlier. Her parents should have noticed earlier! Instead, nobody seemed to have even cared. All the staffs, the other trainees, everyone had turned a blind eye when that one man came up and started to groom a child right in front of their eyes.

When Nanhee joined the idol industry, she was only 9. With parents entirely devoted to their daughter, she had all the support on her side and even when she started as a trainee, there was someone waiting to take her under his wings.

Bong Yesung, well-known producer of many hits and co-founder of NB Ent, was the one who instantly decided he'd make Nanhee a star.
Years passed in which Bong Yesung nurtured Nanhee's skills, her appearance and her behavior.

"This is the perfect way to dress, the audience will love you. You have to act more y, so the fans will fall in love with you. Yes, this is exactly how I want you to move."

Evaluations were a piece of cake to Nanhee, coaches had to focus on making her the star of the trainees, the future as the next Korean Superstar was a promise the company had made.

Everything was perfect.

But then KPopstar happened and everything changed.

To this day Nanhee can't keep her calm thinking back of the evening she stepped on that stage. What she believed to be her biggest accomplishment turned her biggest nightmare really fast.

"You made it", Bong Yesung triumphantly congratulated her. Then he made a move on her. A 16-year old girl, he said owed him everything and now needed to pay him back.

That night, Nanhee came back home crying. She almost wasn't able to tell her parents what happened. How this man's filthy hands had touched her, how he had tried to force himself onto her and how she almost didn't manage to escape.

Her parents were furious, to say the least. They immediately prepared to sue Bong Yesung. But what was thought of an act of justice and protecting one's child backfired in the worst way possible. Bang Yesung managed to cover everything up, threatened to destroy the family, their jobs, everything. And when confronted with what happened personally, he laughed it off and claimed "it was all Nanhee's own fault, that little minx."

Her own fault.

Those words took such a toll on the girl, she immediately went on hiatus. What priorly had been a supportive environment rashly turned into a hostile battle field as word spread fast and Nanhee was outcasted and turned the sudden target of bullying.

The liar. The heretic. The minx who tried to seduce an older man.

Nobody but her parents wanted to believe her.

After that, Nanhee dropped out of school and wasn't able to leave the house for an entire year.

"My own fault."

Suddenly all of her clothes looked like dangerous traps to her. No matter if a pair of jeans, a dress, a thick pullover. Whatever she looked at, nobody could assure her that something like this would never happen again and that it wouldn't be her fault.

It took Nanhee a long time to emotionally recover from the incident and when she thought she could finally move on, things turned out harder than ever.

After years of absence from the idol industry, she decided to return - as a school drop out there wasn't really another option she could think of. The ban from NB entertainment to sign under a new entertainment was finally lifted, her contract terminated for good and she was ready to audition for new companies. But nobody was willing to take her on.

With Bong Yesung spreading false information about her, deeming her "a problematic person to work with", Nanhee was affected by the influence of that man once again.

Her plan seemed like a lost cause until she auditioned for Circle Media.

The day she auditioned, Kim Sungwon personally invited her to his office.

"Before I can let you sign a contract with us, I need to know what really happened. You have a rather bad reputation among companies. I need to know I can trust you."

It was the first time Nanhee got to tell someone else but her parents what really happened without getting accused of being a liar. Kim Sungwon actually believed her. A man. One that did not try to put the blame on her.

That's how Kang Nanhee ended up being a trainee at Circle Media, shortly before Coterie was announced to debut and how she found trust in a man again.

The Idol:
Talent Twin: Kim Sohee
Future Aspirations: Nanhee wants to be able to love. Love herself, love what she's doing, learn to love others and maybe find love along the way. And she wants  justice. May Bong Yesung rot in hell. Nobody else shall experience what she had to go through.

the girl nobody understands
"The past is in the past"

Kim Sungwon told Nanhee. Let's not let the others know about what happened. You're starting anew.

That' s so much easier said than done. How was a girl, a young woman supposed to act in front of others when she had been groomed all her life. To Nanhee there's only a limited amount of ways of how to deal with things. She doesn't trust others, she's scared of hearing the words again.

"Your own fault."

All she knows is that she trusts Kim Sungwon which is both boon and bane. Nanhee constantly seeks approval and praise from Sungwon and the only way she knows to get exactly that is to relive what she's been taught all her life. When Sungwon is around you'll experience y Nanhee at her finest. The way she moves, the way she speaks, the flirtatious looks she gives him - it's not intentional, don't get me wrong. It's just that she doesn't know how to get attention and approval any other way. Not seldomly her behavior is met with a frown or one or two judgmental comments. But how would the others know better? How would she know better? It's a vicious cycle she's caught in.

And the cycle doesn't stop there. When around others of her age, Nanhee is constantly scared of socializing. She doesn't know what to say, she's scared to even move, she just doesn't want to repeat what happened in the past.

"Nanhee never smiles", some may say. "She's so arrogant, she always keeps her ear buds in and stays away and if she listens to what we have to say, she rarely ever answers, she just looks at us and frowns." Yes, Nanhee suffers of resting scared -face. To her it's the best defense and a lot better than reliving the memories.

This leads to yet another problem, however. As a member of a group you'd expect the members to be able to be team player. No such thing exists for Nanhee. As the precious center of the NB Ent trainees in the past, she's used to be in the center and all the more to surpass all the other trainees. She's extremely competetive and gets very frustrated and resentful when someone else is better than her. She'd never tell them in their face, but she'd sulk a very long time - not that anyone would notice since she's rarely talking at all.

To add to this mix of negative traits, her most problematic issue is her anger management. She easily gets overwhelmed with anger and runs wild in a fury when triggered. The most common trigger that ticks her off is seeing men pestering girls and no matter if she likes or dislikes said girl, she'd slap that guy in the face, best case kick him in the balls and cuss him out like a maniac. Not seldomly she has the be held back when standing on the same stage with a guy that priorly pestered a girl, otherwise she might push him off the stage.

Nanhee is the queen of sending mixed signals. One second she stares at you as if she's about to murder you, the next one she protects you from a creep. Then again she's acting like a nine-tail fox, coaxing guys and luring them in with her movements, her melodical voice and the eye-contact that might or might not have already caused a guy to lose it. But don't they dare even getting an inch to close to her and she's going all defensive and gets aggressive in panic. Hear me out, she's not trying to seduce you intentionally. She just doesn't know better and after almost 10 years of being pushed into the mold that made her who she is now, it's hard to get out of it.

She doesn't mean ill and she's also not unaware of it. She tries very hard to become a better person, make friends and step by step getting normal. It's just so hard, you see. Nanhee is extremly scared of doing another fatal mistake and easily frightened when others approach her first. Unfortunately, she's also too scared to be the one to approach first. But maybe one day shell find the right incentive to finally do the first step...

Seo Sihoo

"Don't do it."

Jaeseok was holding a cup of iced Americano in his hands and Sihoo already knew where this was going.

"What?" Jaeseok asked, trying to hide the drink behind his back.

"Is your number stuck to the bottom of it?"

"Err.... nooooo?! Of course not!"

"Then what is this?"  Sihoo snapped the drink out of Jaeseok's hands and there it was. Stuck to the very bottom of the drink. His number.

"You don't understand how love works", Jaeseok muttered as he snatched the drink out of Sihoo's hands.

"Does HE even know how love works?", Dohyun asked when he watched Jaeseok grumpily walking away. "Kang Nanhee is NOT a friendly person. She won't like this."

Sihoo sighed. They all knew what was going to happen. But Jaeseok. Jaeseok never accepted a no and to him it seemed impossible that Kang Nanhee wasn't into him.

"Let's keep an eye on how bad it's going to be", Dohyun suggested and the boys followed Jaeseok who was patiently waiting in front of the training room where the Coterie line-up was practicing.

Over his shoulders they could watch the girls too and Kang Nanhee was as striking as one must have been to attract Jaeseok to the extent he'd go through all the humiliation she let him go through on a daily basis.

Sihoo had to admit, the way Nanhee danced, the way she looked over her shoulder and how her eyes were piercing through the glass - he could have sworn she was dancing just for him and he almost forgot they were not alone in the room.

"This is impressive", Dohyun said and tore Sihoo out of his thoughts. Sihoo knew that he was talking about the etnire group, but Sihoo had to admit that he was indeed thinking the way Nanhee was mesmerzing the viewer was impressive - even though he felt embarassed for a hot second feeling intimate with Nanhee when he was only watching her dance.

Inside of the room the girls started clapping and Sara was telling them some last words before leaving the room. When she opened the door and almost hit Jaeseok with it, she frowned at the boys and Sihoo noticed how she was just barely managing holding a snarky remark about the boys sneaking back. The three of them quickly stepped aside until the girls left in a pack, minus Nanhee. Nanhee never joined the other girls and either left first or last.

Jaeseok quetly snuck inside and Nanhee who was standing in a corner, a towel around her neck,  didn't notice how he was approaching really fast. When she looked up from her phone, he was already right in front her and caused her to wince back, almost dropping her phone.

"Want some?" Jaeseok asked, holding the Iced Americano straight into her face.

Nanhee's reaction came quicker than any of the guys expected, when she shoved the drink away with such a quick and powerful movement, the cup jumped off and the drink exploded all over Jaeseok.

"I told you to leave me alone!", she barked aggressively.

Dohyun rushed inside the room and quickly grabbed Jaeseok's arm. "Let's get something to clean the floor quickly", he said as he was dragging a very baffled Jaeseok after him.

Nanhee was still glaring at them as they left and when they were gone her hostile eyes were shifting towards Sihoo.

"A simple No would have been enough. You should apologize to Jaeseok", he told her with a scoff and crossed arms.

"I never asked him to be nice to me in the first place. He should appologize for making me uncomfortable all the time."

The entitlement in her voice pissed Sihoo off big time.

"For someone who moves and looks at guys like she can't wait to hop on their laps, you sure act like everyone around is evil but you. I know that Jaeyeok is very pushy but he's only trying to be nice to you. I'm not saying what he's doing is okay, but the way you're dealing with him is just as terrible."

That day was the last day Sihoo ever saw Nanhee dancing the way she did before. Dohyun and Jaeseok would swear nothing had changed but whenever Sihoo would pass by the training room while Coterie was aside, Nanhee danced with the charisma of a wet towel.

In fact, Sihoo had scared Nanhee so much with his words that she lost the ability to human when he's around. She's a pro performer but whenever she only senses his presence in front of the training room and there might be the slightest chance he possibly looks into the room through that tiny window in the door, she messes up royally and will turn into a stiff chunk of wood.

Funny enough, as much as Nanhee tries to avoid Sihoo she wants nothing more than being acknowledged by him. It's so weird for her feeling attracted to someone YOUNGER than her. She never knew something like this was possible and it irritates her a lot. Sihoo makes Nanhee want to be able to be normal around others and as much as she wants to learn to be a decent human being, she also wants to learn how to impress others without being all over the top ual.

love Interest

Jaeseok knows he's hot . The masses of simps waiting for him outside just proves how right he is. He can have anyone. Or so he thought... until he met Kang Nanhee.

The first time Jaeseok noticed Kang Nanhee was when he spotted her during a dance practice. This animal, this wild beast, the furious eyes. He could literally hear her purr into his ears. And damn, she was moving like she just jumped out of a movie.

Jaeseok grinned and he knew he'd make her fall head over heels for him.

How wrong he was.

His first approach ended with her pushing him violently against the mirrors when he stepped just half a foot too close to her. The second time she actually cussed him out and ran out before he could even start a conversation. The other members of Omni kept telling him to finally give up. But the more Nanhee was pushing him away, the more he started to want her. No girl ever dared to treat him that way. This was new. This was exciting.

The heart wants what the heart wants. And very often it wants what it can't get. Humans, huh.

Jaeseok's biggest problem is that he doesn't know his boundaries. He's so used to getting all the attention, all the love, basically everything he wants, that he forgot how to treat a woman right. He's rather ignorant and sees women as challenges, as trophies, as objects to desire.

He'll have to learn a big chunk of decent and respectful behaviour, before Nanhee will agree to go out with him.

Ending: Jaeseok and Nanhee are in the same boat in learning how to treat the other gender right. How to be cautious of hurting others' feelings but also in growing to be the best versions of themselves. They can't do it on their own but luckily they have their group mates to help them grow. Nanhee might actually give in to Jaeseok if he ever happens to witness how others are being creeps around her and defend her from them while also reflectiing on how creepy he must have looked to her. She might tell him about her past, he might finally start shifting his focus from himself to the broader picture of humanity and they might get a happy end after all....

... if that's what the author wants ;)

Trivia

- Nanhee's favorite drink is Omija Hwajae

- She panics when alone in a room with a guy

- She flips when others are whining over small things because have you heard what happened to her?!

- constantly leaves text messages on read without answering

- she will hate any song - no matter how great- if Bong Yesung is part of the production

- If the trainees get food they have to split by themselves, Nanhee won't eat anything at all because she doesn't want to end up in a conflict over who eats most etc.

- if another member of Coterie has a crush on someone and tells her about it, she'll have on of her very long "men are bad" speeches. But not Sungwon. Sungwon is different.

- when Ombi performs she'll always only stare at Sihoo. Jaeseok could hip straight in her face and all she'd see would still be Sihoo

- Sungwon > Sihoo: If Sungwon and Sihoo are both watching Nanhee, she'll be Aphrodite herself in front of them no matter how scared she is of Sihoo. Sungwon outweighs EVERYONE.
Final Thoughts

Thanks for creating such a cool story! It's been a while since I made a character, so I hope Nanhee turned out somewhat okay.

I have a few scene requests:

- it would be cool to see Nanhee confronted with BongYesung at some point. Some kind of redemption and if it's only through the hand of Jaeseok who punches that pedo in the face.

- Sihoo questioning Nanhee's taste, asking if she might have a crush on Sungwon and it will make her think HARD

- Nanhee one day telling the others of what happened to her in the past.
