Why Am I Blocked? - a response

https://www.asianfanfics.com/story/view/1437636/1/why-am-i-blocked

I can't post a comment to this on the story so here goes nothing.

This "answer", this so-called "harsh truth" is such bull, I don't think I've ever read anything more entitled and more victimizing. I'm surprised it has so many upvotes as is, but I suppose people just like to hear "the tea" without really thinking.

1) Every person is entitled to whoever they want as readers - that's true. You can block whoever you want for whatever reason you want. But people who are blocked are just as entitled to question the blocking as you are to block them.

2) Readers who subscribe but don't upvote or comment are not bad people and they aren't selfish and leeches. It's simply disgusting to think of other people this way. There can be plenty reasons as to a subscription but no comment or upvote. Look, your story might not deserve an upvote and so ing what? Subscribing is a way of finding a story again and a way to follow it. You might subscribe to a story you intend of reading and then get busy for a while. For whatever reason, a subscription but no comments/upvotes is not a way to make people bad.

3) Nobody gets to come after other people's language skills on this damn website. That is simply disgusting. Many young people (writers or readers) are not native English speakers and many are reading to learn. You might feel embarrassed by your skills (newsflash: many people who learn second or third languages actually feel very self-conscious when speaking with native members as they don't want to be butchering the language.)

4) You can be supportive of your favorite authors and/or stories in many ways. That's it. There are many ways to be supportive and hey, subscribing and then recommending the story is one way to be extremely supportive.

5) Just because I spent a week or two writing a story does not mean you have to be somehow eternally grateful I did that either - gratitude goes both ways. I owe you nothing but you owe me nothing in return. I'm the one uploading the story to AFF. I'm not charging you money to read this story. This is MY pleasure and I WANT to share it with you. Am I happy with feedback? Absolutely! But the time I spent on my hobbies does not grant me the rights to gratitude from a person on the other side of the world who also shares my love for a particularly boy band or girl group. If I spent a month knitting myself a sweater, I am not entitled to a compliment from every person I meet. Writing and posting to AFF is a HOBBY, it is MY hobby and YOU are not forced to like it or compliment it.

6) Authors who subscribe, but don't have the time or energy to comment/upvote or read immediately are not worse than any other person on this website. They're human like the rest of us. Stop measuring your or other's worth in words written on a website.

Everybody is entitled to the use of the blocking function. Readers are entitled to block authors they find rude. Authors are entitled to block readers they find rude.

But everybody is also entitled to question the blocking.

Grow up. Move on. It goes both ways. Your hobby is yours. It's not your readers.

Lastly, a tip of advice: If you only want 10 kind-hearted readers who are specifically selected to read your story, you can unsubscribe people without blocking them or use the invite-only function. You can be selective with your readers without the use of the blocking function.

Hi, few years back i was blocked by two authors.

The first one, i thought it was because i criticized her posting style, but i was like asking why not really have her to change altogether.. then voila, I can't view her stories the next day.

The second one, with no reason. I always commented and upvoted her story.
I was confused why to the point i got to think, oh maybe they're friends and they hate me.
Till today, i found that is not only me blocked by those authors :\

Something I noticed while reading it was the post was in a very off-putting way was villianizing the readers and putting entitlement in a pedestal. It was written in a very arrogant way and almost made readers feel like .... ? I don't know the post left a very very bad taste in my mouth. It ruined my whole image of both reader and authors to be honest. I only came to see if anyone was going to do something about the post, and I'm happy to see you doing this. THANK YOU!!

That author must've felt that their stories are a gift to humanity. LOL

Imagine being so entitled. But then again it's 2020. Hurrah!

Loved everything about this, thank you! I am an author, reader and usually silent reader. I didn't get to read this particular post and it's probably a good thing, cause it would've upset me, I got upset just hearing about it. I know this is not the first time this has happened here, but it's no less saddening or infuriating. If the only reason this writer is writing is to get validation and praise, he or she is writing for the wrong reasons. There are many reasons for silent readers, I personally only comment on stories that touch me or move me in a certain way, same for upvotes, it is by no means disrespect to the author. I only usually subscribe when it's required or if it's an ongoing story, otherwise if it's done and I love it, it goes into a list I've created for my favorites based on my bias groups. When I subscribe, that doesn't mean I have to comment either. I am so humbled and honored when someone chooses to subscribe to any of my stories or even better yet, take the time to comment and I love all my readers, if they leave comments, upvote or not.

Things like this are embarrassing to writers and as a writer to anyone that post happened to offend, I apologize and please realize, we are not all like this.

Thank you for your post and please keep writing!!

Ooof i'm glad someone has finally pointed out these things today. I've been wondering what the hell is going on and why an author would block her readers without any freaking reason. As an author I do block readers who put pressure on me or keep harassing me. But blocking the ones who actually read and uppreaciate my works? I have no reason.
Even the ones who keeps harassing me, I give them a lot of chances before blocking them in case they wouldn't back off.
I'm putting the option of commenting down in your own language if you don't speak English or your English isn't good (cuz I speak four languages already) it seems like my readers liked the idea because i recieve comments in other languages now and I always reply to them (in case i couldn't understand, I have google trans) and that's it.
We can always discuss everything with our readers rather than taking advantage of them and blocking them in the end without giving out any reason.
In case you felt uncomfortable with them or something u have the option to make your stories private and invite the ones who you are comfortable with or whatever ldnxkdkd just don't behave like a brat.

Well said! As I stated on tonnettie’s blog post, sometimes I don’t comment on every story I read because the only thing my brain can think of is “great” or “I love this” or something else that sounds really generic and insincere and I honestly feel would be a waste of time for the author to check the notification and read.

I do agree with their point that you have the right to decide who reads your stories and who you choose to befriend on this site, but they really didn’t have to go out of their way to write a “story” and bid for the ad spot just because they’re salty about silent readers.

Thank you so much for this.
I was a silent reader, but now I try to leave comments whenever I can. As someone who English is my 2nd language, I'm still not confident in speaking and writing with it. I still use translation whenever I want to leave a comment and it can be a struggle to do it with tabs and all. So when I saw that promote 'story', though I agree with some of the content, it still hurt me to read the 'shameless' part about silent readers. Reading and understanding English is not as hard as speaking and writing, in my opinion. Also, I'm a shy person and worried a lot everytime I want to leave a comment. So thank you for this.
I just hope people realize that each person is different and try not to judge or assume things about others. Thank you again. :)

I thought I was the only one who is offended even though I don't know what is happening. We are all trying to get through live with reading/posting /commenting on this website behind fake names. We don't have to make our cyber life even worse than our real ones.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. It’s crazy how someone can do that. Comments, upvotes, can recommendations are appreciated, but they’re not necessary. We’re writing fanfics for god sakes, it’s not like I’m giving everyone an exclusive to my soon to be published story.

As for the silent reader part, I do try to comment here and there, but news flash! I have a life! Just because it takes me hours to write one chapter, it takes minutes to read it. I’m sure it take a reader minutes to read it, so people do it in their free time.

The entitlement of her post was just speaking volumes about her character and the fact that she didn't just post it on her own account baffles me. If you’re going to say it own it.

Ps. You can report her ad for spam. It’s not a story. That advertisement block is for stories only. So she spent 6k karma points to bash her readers instead of letting someone who actually wants to have their story read

As a writer on this site I fully agree. Do I love comments? Heck yes and I always want more because the positive feedback keeps me going. Will I block anyone just because they didn’t upvote or comment? No because they’re still reading! That’s why we post content, so people can look at it. Whether it’s good or bad or just mediocre, we want to have some sort of acknowledgment. I’d say about 90% of my readers are silent but hey, they’re the same people that follow every story I have.

This! So much this! I have TONS of subscribers who've never commented or upvoted. I don't hate those subscribers. I'm glad that my story made them curious enough that they wanted to subscribe. I love my readers who comment and upvote (especially comments, since I've never come anywhere near enough upvotes to get featured). But readers who just subscribe and do something else are still noticed and still important.

And to authors who want to complain about readers' English skills: DON'T EVEN. I'd bet actual money that they're doing better at English than you'd do in their native language. I know how hard it is to write in a foreign (to you) language. I'm flattered as hell when a reader takes the effort to put together enough English to give me a comment.
