personality

— [ imaginative, expressive, lighthearted, considerate ]

Liang waves up a hand, "Okay, okay, but what if we make the music video about a friend grieving?" Sihoo, his friend, shoots him a look, "To the song Fireflies? By Owl City?" Liang puts both hands up, "No, listen!" And perhaps listen you should. Liang spends lots of time preoccupied by his own thoughts, one of many by-products from being interested in cinematic worlds and various medias. The boy is easily inspired and often has a flurry of ideas he wants to pursue, evident through the mess that is his Notes app in his phone.

— [ responsible, mature, self-doubting ]

— [ thin-skinned, passive, restless ]

looks like a slytherin, is a hufflepuff. don't let his sharp eyes trick you, he is babie. compassionate and is always out to help. earnest and never fails to show his appreciation for others. loves kids!!!!!!! prolly been through some mean, petty family . struggles with his identity. a bit frustrated that people can't seem to get over the fact that he isn't a foreigner, but he tries not to let it get to him. sincere, and sometimes people can see some of his maturity shining through every once in a while. is that one friend who takes care of their drunk friends in a hectic party. he would say he's that designated driver friend, but he doesn't know how to drive so haha. dad friend. in liang we trust? the most put-together among the dormitories, tends to cook meals for dormmates. is literally that one meme with the black house and pastel house.

background — Born in Beijing, China. Liang was born thanks to two people in a drunkened state doing the do. His biological mother didn't want anything to do with him, so once he was born, he was taken under his father's custody. His father, Song Feng, did as much as he could to provide for him while he was still studying at Tsinghua University, along with balancing jobs and parenthood. In a chance encounter, he finally meets his soulmate, Yang Jiahn, who would later be who Liang considers his mother. Jiahn was two years younger than Feng, coming to Tsinghua University due to her interest in the culture and on the basis that her soulmate was Chinese. Together, they raised Liang. Once his mother graduated, they moved to Korea after his parents received his paternal grandparents' blessings. There, his mother introduced his father and Liang to her family. Liang was five years old when they made the move. His parents got married a year later.

Liang didn't have a problem with the language. He was taught Korean side by side with Mandarin once his parents realized they were soulmates. The problem, however, was his mother's family. While they approved of Jiahn marrying her soulmate, they weren't fond of the fact of her having a stepson. A chunk of the family was conservative, therefore preferring a traditional family (i.e. Jiahn having children she birthed, in which Liang isn't). In extension, they had mixed to negative feelings towards Feng due to not waiting for his soulmate and having a child with another woman. So while they tolerated the new addition to their family, it was clear they didn't take Feng and Liang too kindly. Liang, although young, still was able to realize the different treatment he received. Feng decided that he had to win the respect of Jiahn's family, especially for his son's sake. He began taking on some part-time jobs to build on his fluency.

Jiahn took on a teaching job, meaning that both Liang's parents were mostly busy. They left him to the care of Jiahn's trustworthy brother and sister-in-law in the neighourhood. The couple only had one daughter, Nara. Liang ended up growing up with his step-cousin for a big chunk of his childhood. She was clingy, eager to push the older brother role onto him as she was the only child. While it was annoying, Liang was grateful that she never put a barrier between them. While older relatives would deny him gifts during the holidays and barely bat an eye for his birthday and achievements, Nara and her family always acknowledged him. Feng secured himself a position under Jiahn's family's company at Haengsol Pharma Plus. Ltd. as a secretary. Slowly, he proved himself to the family under their business. As Liang grew older, Nara became outspoken and plucked the courage to call the older relatives out for their discrimination against him.

Liang made sure he didn't make his parents worry, doing well in school and going out once in a while so as to not let them worry over whether he was making friends or not. While he unfortunately stuck out due to growing up a bit differently (as well as having the ethnic difference), Liang did eventually make a friend. Sihoo just lived a short walk down. Sihoo's family were familiar neighbours, so Liang began visiting their home frequently. They spent lots of time watching movies. Sihoo introduced Liang to several movie franchises, cultivating a whole new interest in the world of cinema. In a way, it comforted him. It was his form of escapism, and he felt a whirlwind of creativity swirl in his mind. Liang finally realized that there were people who didn't care that he wasn't Korean, or that he didn't have what most people called a typical family. With people like Sihoo and Nara, he felt important. For just a little bit, the distant stares he got from the older relatives felt less sharp as he found things to look forward to.

Things got a little better. The family finally saw the qualities that Jiahn saw in Feng. Perhaps it was also because Jiahn became exhausted of the treatment towards her husband and child and spoke of it to the guilty offenders. They saw Feng's sincerity in his hard work, and through Jiahn, learned why he toiled tirelessly. They saw Nara's outrage and let their stubborness slip, seeing Liang as the kid he really was. Still, relations couldn't simply go back to a clean slate, but all sides were finally making their peace. Liang was going into middle school when they reached this point. He could finally see that the rest of the family were making an effort to include him and his father. He could see that his father was at peace, appearing less stressed than he'd been. The whole family went on trips together, within and outside the country. Both sides of Liang's family finally met again since the wedding, now with open hearts and minds. Feng and Jiahn could finally regularly visit Feng's family in China knowing that they didn't have to hide the trouble they were experiencing with Jiahn's family in Korea.

With less tension among the family came a new addition to the family. His half-sister, Jihee, was born. The little bundle of joy became the family's princess. His parents were finally comfortable with bringing in a new child now that family matters were settled. Some years later, Liang, along with Sihoo, found a passion within filming and editing when they took a digital media course as an elective in high school. They found the process extremely fun, spending hours pouring their imagination and effort into a cohesive piece of art. For Sihoo, he knew that this was what he wanted to do. While Liang also liked the idea of getting into film production, he decided to have a safer option upfront, getting into language studies like his mother had done. If he can't get into the film industry, at least he can get a job as a teacher or journalist or something, right? Yes, Liang doesn't have his life planned, but so do a bunch of other people, so he's not worried.

Fortunately, he keeps his grades up and is admitted into Haebyeon National University. Sihoo makes it in as well, and the two get excited for a new chapter in their life that they even start their own YouTube channel over it. It seemed silly at first, but looking back with the videos they already did, it was already acting like a scrapbook of sorts. A little practice in editing wouldn't hurt either, right? Everything in his life seems in order now. Liang hasn't met his soulmate yet, but it's alright! He's having fun meeting all kinds of people and simply making memories. He sees it like a movie of its own. Liang looks at everyone and takes in the moment, giving people a hand and an opportunity for the next best scene to come in.

likes —
— movies : just in general. whether they're good ones like the mcu or studio ghibli (god, he and his friends can go on forever about them), or really bad ones like the room where they can laugh their asses off. he just likes being immersed.
— hugs : generally very comforting, 24/7 will accept hugs.
— brown sugar boba : the sugary goodness is comforting, leave him be.
— heavy rain : he likes it when the raindrops hit against the window.
— mornings : liang likes the idea of starting a new day and getting prepped for all the stuff waiting ahead.
— seafood : could live off being pescatarian if he wanted to, but.. nah.
— eating out : sure, he cooks. but there's still something nice about going out with friends and eating together (without having to worry about the cooking and ingredients himself).

dislikes —
— prejudice : he's dealt with it ever since he was a kid, and he still deals with it every now and then.

fears —
— distance : or detachment. liang hated feeling uncared, forgotten, and unacknowledged and he still fears it now. he cherishes his friends and doesn't want to feel the way he did as a kid ever again.

hobbies —
— cooking : a life skill his aunt taught (and occasionally his dad) that has stuck to him as a hobby. even his friends tend to send him recipes to try (so that they themselves can do a taste test, h  a h ha a). he can basically cook anything and has the confidence to experiment with the flavours.
— video editing : easily the one thing that can keep him amused. you can catch him slapping the mii theme on awkward moments, or animal crossing soundtracks on mundane scenes, or doing blackmail-worthy close-ups on people's faces. he also tends to do fan edits on the mcu.
— dancing :
— writing :

habits —
— sweater paws : without a doubt. it's one dead giveaway that shows how soft the guy actually is.
— terrible sleep schedule : the earliest he'll go to bed is 12 a.m.
— leaning in : when he wants to catch every word somebody is saying.
— a fast eater : liang's focus goes straight to his food. when eating with others, he doesn't join in on the conversation unless somebody calls for his attention or until he's done his food.
— cleaning : whether it's after himself or after a big party, he starts picking up trash and gathering dishes without even thinking.
— drinking water : a hydrated boi. even if he isn't thirsty, he'll be reaching for his water bottle. a very good hydration reminder himself if you also wanna hop on to the hydrated bois squad.

trivia —
— knows girl group choreography and is not afraid to show it. thanks to his friend yoora, he knows a bit of boy group choreo. still, girl groups are his specialty.
— he has a good sense of direction, so his friends usually look to him when they realize they got lost trying to look for a certain place or area.
— he knows how to do braids. his younger sister often bugged him to do her hair, so he eventually learned how to do different kinds of braids so he could entertain her. liang's quite good at them.
— part of the pet arrival announcement group chat set up by vet students.
— due to cooking for people a bunch of times, liang knows all of his friends' dietary restrictions and allergies. maybe even his mutual friends' details too if they've come over for his food a few times.
— when mr. yoo is on break, his dorm turns into a hangout place for a bunch of his friends and mutual friends. they know that liang would be cooking his own stuff. as long as people chip in on groceries and/or help him out in the kitchen, he doesn't mind. it's a cheaper alternative for them instead of going out to eat or getting food delivered, and it gives them some good memories! they all end up playing video games or watching a movie, some of them even sleeping over when it gets late.
— liang and sihoo have a youtube channel to document their time at hnu. there's all kinds of videos, starting off with the hnu campus tour, vlogs of the school events, compelling stories being told by students from different years, and just them doing weird stuff with their friends. liang and sihoo hope to make a video on the alleged fourth underground floor of the liberal arts department building someday, buzzfeed unsolved style.
— besides the videos mentioned above, the channel has these kinds of videos uploaded as well: the progress of creating a gigantic snowball at long walk, dormitory prank wars (they intend to make it a series that lasts until their last year at hnu), sihoo attempting to cook (with liang at the other side of campus, who is on speaker trying to give instructions as sihoo s everything up and gives liang a mental breakdown), a vlog of them doing an escape room (they want to do this again with new people in the group).
— gets nervous and apprehensive when it comes to his birthday and its celebration. he would say it's irrational, but can't since he knows the source of it. he's spent many years as a kid having his birthday celebrated by very few when so many of his other relatives basically held banquets for the other kids in the family. while he's now on good terms with his extended family and has a handful of friends, he still can't shake off the feeling.
— once he turned eighteen, liang wrote a simple greeting on his arm. he was written nothing back, so he supposed his soulmate was younger than him. he waited and eventually, his soulmate wrote back. he's coded himself as gēqǔ (歌曲), simply from taking his surname in english and translating it into mandarin. he's asked a few questions, though it seems his soulmate wants to be vague, so he respects their decision.
— favourite animated films: wall-e, the cat returns.
— smash bros. mains: ness, inkling, peach.

liang says —

— "emo boyfriend is no more! .. my black clothes are in the laundry."
— "who's a good boy? who's the bestest doggo? you're the bestest doggo!"
— "how would i like my coffee? as dark as my soul." ".. four milks and three sugars, please."
— "sihoo, i'm never trusting you with cooking rice ever again."
— "no, yoora, we're not getting turnt with white wine. this is for the pasta i'm making."
— "stop picking your nose, bro, you're gonna get a nosebleed."
— "tony stark didn't sacrifice himself for you to beat yourself up like this. c'mon, you can do it!"
— "what do you mean you tweeted my food to gordon ramsay?!"
— "god, yoora's puke from last night stained the pavement.."

character quote

family —

— father. song feng. director of operations at haengsol pharma plus ltd.
liang holds a lot of respect for his father for being able to provide for him while he was still a university student. liang's grateful that his father never gave up on raising him. deep down, liang couldn't imagine juggling his studies, two jobs, and raising a child. while it's a bit morbid, he's glad that his father never thought of abandoning him, because liang would've understood why. his father's family were considered middle class. they didn't have spare money for an unplanned child. ever since liang could remember, his father has always worked hard.

these days, his dad's been focused on work, but liang can see there's some stress that has been taken away from the past few years. the situation between the rest of the family has significantly eased compared to when they first came to korea. his dad isn't worried over securing a stable income to provide for the family anymore. every now and then, his dad would check on liang in the family group chat. as per lots of adults, the way his dad types doesn't seem very enthusiastic, but liang knows that his dad is sincerely interested in what's going on. at least once a month on a weekend, his father would bring the family out to a restaurant to spend some time together. and no doubt about it, his dad would start speaking to liang in mandarin just to check on his fluency. it's almost embarrassing, really, because his dad starts talking to him in mandarin like he's some toddler that's still being taught the language. his mom joins in on the fun too. liang endures and laughs along with them, pretending to be worse in mandarin than he actually is.
— faceclaim: chen kun.

— mother. song jiahn. chinese language and literature professor at snu.
the only mother he's ever known, liang would never ask the universe for a different woman as his mother. she's dedicated to teaching and she's dedicated to her family. jiahn has a lot of love to give, everybody can see that upon looking at her, a comforting smile gracing her features.
— faceclaim: s.e.s' bada.

— sister. song jihui / jihee. elementary school student.
his little princess. liang would probably kick anybody's teeth in if they brought harm to her. the rascal is now seven years old, and a smart one at that. she's bilingual and sly as hell, easily tricking family members for her own gain (usually to allow herself to eat more junk food). you can bet that liang was there with her when there was nobody else to look after her. because liang has been mostly away from home in the school year, though, they've spent less time together. that doesn't mean they got less close.

his cousin nara has filled his role in as older sibling while he stayed at hnu's dormitories. every once or twice a week, jihee would video call him and have a short, cute conversation with him. she calls randomly, so sometimes she'd be calling in the middle of the class. if liang can help it, he'd excuse himself out of class and answer it. he can't bring himself to ignore her calls. they often switch between korean and mandarin, and luckily, jihee isn't at that age yet to be holding conversations in mandarin that would force liang to use too many brain cells. still, liang has so much hope for jihee and hopes that he could be the best brother to her on every step of the way.
— faceclaim: kim haeun.

— cousin. yang nara. high school student.
while actually step-cousins, they pretty much consider each other siblings. nara is the only child in her family and she barely remembers her own life without liang, being three years old when he moved into korea. as kids, nara was extremely clingy towards him due to her fixation on having an older brother figure. even now, nara pesters him and tends to be nosy about what's going on in his life. she's got a mental list of the people liang knows or is friends with (the little time it took her to figure out that he befriended yoora and yechan was almost frightening).

these days, nara has been seeking out some advice from him as she is preparing to go into post-secondary. they check in on each other every once in a while. liang does it because nara tends to have some stupid ideas. nara does it to catch up with him in general. even when she suffers the consequences of her dumb decisions (despite him being there to advise against it), liang is there to console her. really, it's the least he can do when she spoke highly and unabashedly of him when he wasn't accepted among others (even family members). through her, he learned to be outgoing and adventurous. liang also wouldn't have a heckin' wardrobe and style if it weren't for her either.
— faceclaim: itzy's yuna.

AVENGERS, ASSEMBLE!

friends —

— close friend, dormmate. yong sihoo. second year, film production major.
sihoo is the goth boyfriend to liang's emo boyfriend. they're childhood friends, neighbours, and now dormmates. sihoo is the more sassy, talkative, and concerningly dauntless of the two. sihoo is willing to do anything for the sake of his creativity and that dedication shines especially through film production and youtube (trust liang on that statement, he's seen sihoo roll down the grass hills at long walk like a fool for a transition shot).
they're a bit like twins. they've known each other for most of their lives, so while they may have their differences, they know how the other thinks. these chic and edgy looking boys sauntering side by side are just goofballs who just want to have fun. including spontaneously creating a youtube channel and somehow actually being able to maintain a decent momentum. both of them are a good, innocent example of 'boys will be boys,' fixated on the smallest (and weirdest) joys in life (like creating the two meter diameter snowball for fun and for youtube. they only stopped because they were hungry.). rest assured that wherever liang is, he's probably with sihoo too. people tend to be confused over the nature of their relationship, because sometimes they like to bully and make fun of each other for the heck of it (it's all in good fun, don't worry). half the time they're roaming around campus with food in their hands, the other half they're probably filming or slouching over a laptop editing.
— faceclaim: the boyz' hwall.

— close friend. clara won yoora. second year, korean language education major.

the two met during a welcoming event last year, finding each other when the speakers blasted music and created an impromptu random play dance. these two were peerless when it came to the girl group dances, but yoora had him beat by having the boy group dances down. the fact she has a youtube channel dedicated to dance covers explained it. they became friends immediately after the event. they can do youtube stuff together, right? right.
yoora, unfortunately for liang, is also as unruly as sihoo. it's like liang is cursed to look after fools that chase after the first sign of trouble. master of sarcasm, she always bickers with sihoo yet the two are always found together in the middle of the chaos that they've caused. it doesn't help that yoora lets herself get into or near trouble just so she can bust back in to tell them the tea. yoora can be seen dragging liang around as they record girl group covers around campus for her channel. some viewers think they're cute together, but they aren't soulmates (which is for the better for liang's health, god protect whoever is yoora's soulmate). she's mischievous as hell and has a will of her own. though it's that child-like activeness that people like and allows her to interact well with kids. the day liang sees yoora teach her own army of children might be the day he suffers a breakdown.
— faceclaim: bvndit's seungeun.

— shin yechan. first year, acting major. collab with exotic-milk [ app ]

liang's most recent friendship. liang and sihoo were doing their thing as welcoming committee when liang recognized yechan, "sihoo, it's the coffee boy!" he whisper-yelled instead of whispering out of excitement, catching the younger boy's attention. with yechan's outgoing attitude, they easily made friends out of each other. liang definitely has taken a liking to yechan. lowkey he sees him as a younger brother, but you won't ever hear him say that.

yechan's definitely helped them liang and sihoo out in more ways than one.
— faceclaim: x1's yohan.

— friend, dormmate. cha kihyun. second year, marketing major. collab with sweetch3rry [ app ]
lumped together as dormmates during first year, kihyun has returned as liang and sihoo's dormmate for a second year. they quickly found a friend in him and kihyun becomes a regular sight throughout their videos. after all, he's the reason why liang and sihoo have pulled off some of their videos. this boy pulls out connections that the other two can't seem to fathom.
kihyun's a bit of an enigma to liang and sihoo, in an amusing way. liang could never get used to it whenever kihyun comes across multiple people he knows within a ten minute walk through campus. liang could take his eyes off kihyun for ten seconds and the boy is already at the dj's booth chatting the dj up. but that's part of his charm. liang's really grateful towards kihyun in a lot of ways.

personality —
yiran has a personality that kind of confuses people because she is everything all at once. she’s known for her "different" personality, however, it's not that she's completely weird, it's more that she is expressive and seems to not be afraid to make a fool out of herself. she’s not afraid to cry and show her emotions; her vulnerable side. some may like it for it shows that she’s genuine but some may dislike it because they find it as “too sensitive”. and her mind never stops and is always filled with thoughts and dreams and this can also make her overthink events or situations. she can be so lost in her own thoughts that she has left her body to live in her mind. however, this endless stream of thoughts could be considered both a strength and a flaw. a strength; she knows herself and her thoughts like the back of her hand, she is interested in things and this curiosity is her drive to try new things. a weakness; she’s highly emotional and is very in touch with her own emotions so being in her own head could lead to negative thoughts and create unnecessary insecurities. also, her energetic spirit can be a bit too much for some people to handle.

despite all that though, she radiates confidence and acceptance, in addition, it subconsciously makes others trust her more because they think she’s real. it shows the yiran is comfortable with herself and others relate to her, which makes them feel closer to her. yiran is known for her optimism. she attracts others like a magnet because of her positive outlook on life. she’s bright and dynamic which makes her entertaining to watch and that’s what makes her popular in scenes. she has no qualms when it comes to judgment and has a knack for communication. it is natural to her which makes her seem more charismatic and her energy will ultimately empower those around her. she has the power to inspire who she is with just with her words. yiran also brings out the best in people. because she’s humble it makes her likable. another factor that makes yiran such a likable person is, of course, her smile. it makes her look accepting, open and most importantly happy. her smile can have a huge impact on other people as it makes them feel appreciated and loved. yiran is very prone to skinship. the reason she loves it is because she believes physical contact creates a great sense of trust towards the person, as well as, strengthens the relationship. makes people feel safe, accepted and most importantly loved. this in addition to yiran's smile can make others day better. her fascination and curiosity for many things are why she’s so observant and why she seems to just watch over sometimes, eyes glazed over.

relationship —
meeting : Their meeting was rather quite normal. Not too much of a fairy tale, but neither tragic. Yiran was one of Yoora's dormmate, so they'd introduced each other. Liang thinks back on their meeting slightly embarrassed, as Yiran immediately switched to speaking in Mandarin when she found out he was Chinese. Cue Liang stammering and trying to hide a blush that was creeping up, flustered that he couldn't respond back in Mandarin. Man, it wasn't cool at all.. He didn't have much time to react, through, because she was already engrossed in a conversation with Yoora.

Still, she seems to brush it off when she realizes that he can't seem to speak it as well as she does. He doesn't have much time to react as he realizes that she's engrossed in a conversation with Yoora. For a while, that was it. They would exchange greetings as they came across each other since they were mutual friends, but the distance is still there. Liang finds himself letting his sights linger. This is caught by Sihoo's radar, who presses Liang on to tell him what he thinks of Yiran. "What?" He could feel a blush creep up on his face, "I mean, Yiran's nice and really pretty, but doesn't everyone like her too?" Sihoo was squinting suspiciously, "Sure. Whatever you say, Liang." Sihoo was onto him.

The first real progress was when the head chef went off on vacation. Liang was busy with cooking everybody's meals and in a blink of an eye, he was trying to calm his thudding heart as he greeted Yiran, who was invited through Yoora. That night, smiling happily at Yiran while she enjoyed the food, was when Yoora and Kihyun also caught on. By the end of it, Liang found her easy to talk to and he was so glad. After that, both Yoora and Sihoo made it a point to invite Yiran whenever they planned to hang out. They could see Liang was way too shy to take matters into his own hands, so his friends decided that they would be the one to pull the strings.

the story : Slowly but surely, Liang gets to know Yiran (while internally screaming because both Yoora and Sihoo are giving way too many eyebrow wiggles for his comfort). He gets to know her and he's just falling deeper and deeper into the rabbit hole. He finds himself memorizing her likes and dislikes, along with her allergies, when it came to cooking food again. She becomes a natural addition to his group of friends and is quick to hop in on their vlogging adventures. She's one more person to look after and drag back to the dorms when frat parties happen, but Liang isn't complaining.  Perhaps it's just the way Yiran is, but Liang becomes so inclined to look after her with extra care. Well, it wasn't just the way Yiran is, but he also came into terms that he, indeed, has feelings for her and therefore is doing all these things that he normally wouldn't do for his other friends.

Because he isn't familiar with romance, dating, or relationships, Liang just plants his feet where they're at. He refuses to make a move because he's already terrified just thinking about the possibility of rejection. He loves playing wingman, but when it comes to his own love life, he's always at a loss of what to do. Funnily enough, it's when he tries to play wingman that he ends up accidentally making his move. Liang and Sihoo had a project coming up, and Liang wrote the script in a way that the actors would practice and interact with each other a lot. He had two people in mind he wanted to matchmake, but it all backfires when they come to a conclusion together (and one of them misremembered their project's deadline and now had to cram).

This leaves Liang scrambling to snatch a pair of actors for the empty roles, but Sihoo had something else in mind. "Dude, forget it. You be the actor," Sihoo raises his phone up, "Yiran just agreed to act for us." Liang wanted to throw his hands around his friend's neck, but the deed has already been done. Liang is pacing around trying to memorize lines that were meant for somebody else to memorize. They start practicing with each other, and God, now he has to say and do all these cheesy, greasy stuff things that he wrote. He could only hope his face wasn't turning red (Sihoo insists that he did turn red, and Liang is in a state of denial). The project progresses smoothly and they get a decent grade. That's not the only thing that resulted from all the work, though. Yiran realizes she's developed feelings for him thanks to the filming process.

It's Yiran who ends up throwing hints his way, with their friends to the side just nearly wanting to scream at him to just go for it already. He can't believe that someone as dazzling and radiant as Yiran would actually like him, so he just unconsciously swats her hints away thinking it's some lighthearted flirting. Especially when he thinks that she's just jokingly reprising her role as his lover from the film project a while back. They start to hang out, just the two of them, and they're in their own little world. It feels like a dream to Liang. Little by little, they start getting comfortable with each other
