APPEARANCE stella does not stray from her faceclaim. for years, she's had her black hair long, never to be shoulder length, typically with her hair parting slightly from the left. she maintains a fit build, primarily thanks to the weekly pilates classes. most notable at first glance, though, is how she holds herself well. years' worth of being chided about her posture by her mother and aunties eventually stuck.

 

STYLE simple is best. stella never wants to dress like her clothes are wearing her. this fashion philosophy is evident on all occasions. she tends to reserve her dresses for vacations and any kind of social outing. there are slip dresses, sheath dresses, and the occasional sun dresses. with her daily wear, stella has blouses in a variety of styles, usually paired with slim jeans or dress pants.

 

while stella isn't picky over colours, she prefers to keep the fabric a solid colour than wear patterns. stella says that patterns are too busy on the eyes, others like to say she's allergic to patterns. regardless of the occasion, though, she accessorizes with simple gold earrings and necklaces.

BACKGROUND 

— stella's family was at the forefront of her extended family's luxury resort chain expansion. so while they are relatively new to america's high society, there's old money laying around back home in south korea. her father started a successful chain across america in the late 90s and in canada in the early 2000s. paradis resorts became the go-to for those whose money talked and also for those whose wealth whispers.

 

— stella and her siblings—an older sister and a younger brother—grew up smart, albeit with varying potential. it was easy for the kids to believe that success was expected of them. their parents uprooted themselves from their home country for the north american venture, many of their relatives back in korea were being model children. her sister had a talent for business negotiations, while her brother showed potential in financial data. stella.. was there. she was just smart enough, driven enough, charming enough.

 

—  she couldn't find it in her to have the motivation to do anything for the business, nor was she interested in pushing herself to do so. stella liked looking pretty and enjoyed all there is that high society could offer. alas, there are expectations and those expectations urged her to search for a respectable career if she wasn't going to contribute to the business. after high school, stella traveled around the world before giving one last whirl at the family business for her parents' peace of mind. at the end of it all, stella asserted her disinterest in it and chose to pursue journalism at mandela university.

 

— as the university was a popular choice among her friends and peers, stella adjusted easily and stuck to her close-knit group of friends. it's where she eventually meets ian jeong and develops deep feelings for him. but stella quickly finds out that among his group of friends is a pest who also had feelings for him. it unnerved stella, watching her blur the boundaries as friends. she felt taunted. stella held her tongue; bided her time.

 

— all that waiting paid off when that friend of his hit a low point. the day after a particularly wild night of partying, stella scored jackpot: some boasting about the tape he recorded with her. an whose engagement party was on the horizon, meant for a business marriage a few years down the line. the arrangement wasn't exactly secret either and had been in talks for a while. just about everyone was extended an invitation. so, stella hatched a plan.

 

— she hired a hacker to retrieve it. stella pondered her options, but ultimately decided that she didn't want it online in fear that it would be wiped clean and swept under the rug. she needed people to see it. she then hired a separate hacker to stagger her tracks; to do the fell swoop and leak it at the engagement party. what was supposed to be a celebration of an impressive partnership became a storm of shock, disgust, and anger. in the middle of that storm, stella covering , feigning horror and resisting the urge to smile.

 

— it was a mire of feelings for stella too. she caused irreversible damage. but she tries to justify it to herself. the bastard deserved it for cheating on his fiancée, it was better off that she knew! and ian didn't need a friend who knowingly ed with an engaged man. yes, stella exhales. it's only one bad thing she's done. that was it. just one. after the incident, stella helped navigate and supported ian through the changes in his social circle. now, she had no one in her way.

 

— she finishes the rest of her years at mandela university without a hitch. stella secures a job at vogue after graduating, not out of necessity but as something to do to keep a routine in her daily life. in spite of that, stella is enjoying her time and has found it rewarding. her relationship with ian flourished, well up to the point that they are now engaged. stella's living the days she's dreamed of, by the side of the man she loves and being there for him at every step of the way.

 

THEIR SECRET responsible for leaking a tape at an engagement party, subjecting families, business partners, and friends to witness the scandalous, recorded encounter. just because she wanted to isolate and alienate ian's (former) friend for good. / gabriel spotted the pager in stella's purse (used to signal the hacker to play the video at the most opportune moment). / with the gift of hindsight, gabriel hypothesized that stella was involved in the incident. with the power of money, he tracked the signal and got a hold of the hacker. throwing in the cash, the hacker confirmed what the plan was and gave identifying information. it was stella.

— career ladder: initially started off as an editorial assistant for vogue after graduating from mandela university. she was promoted to assistant editor two years later.
— career plans: or rather the lack of it. stella will accept a promotion but also doesn't care whether she climbs up high in the future. if (or rather, once) she feels like she's seen all there is to her current job, she'll resign. 
— communications: stella took up her minor in the very, very unlikely event that her family ignores her wishes and drag her into the family business. 
— paradis resorts: as she had free time due to her gap year, stella shadowed multiple family members positioned in different departments to ascertain her future. despite not choosing to take up the mantle, she developed a deeper appreciation for the work and left with notable ins and outs of how a typical resort functions behind the scenes.
— the met gala: stella's halloween. she hasn't failed to appear ever since she started working at vogue. it's the only time she throws out her "simple is best" fashion philosophy out the window.

— arts, travel, and culture: her family believes in enriching the young mind through travel and the arts. this made a deep impression on stella, who now makes a point to travel abroad, go to museums, plays, musicals, historical sites, national parks, etc. whenever time allows.
— a social drinker: stella won't say no to a drink, especially in a party setting. she's very good with moderation and doesn't ask for more after a few glasses or shots. she did get carried away a handful times back in the mandela days when the drinking games got too fun. she'd get excitable; lots of screaming, playful smacking, and clapping. once she lost steam, people would find her curled up in a corner or couch, napping soundly regardless of noise level.  
— walking with purpose: she always looks straight ahead and takes purposeful strides. it's partially for appearances, but it's mostly to lessen the chances to bump into someone due to hesitation.

 

 

"mrs. stella jeong!" gabriel would tease once she'd gotten into a relationship with ian, "how have you been doing?"

 

— since entering mandela university, their social circles have always been adjacent to each other. the more outgoing people from her friend group eventually became familiar with his, causing both groups to be on friendly terms with each other. while stella never personally went out of her way to interact with him, she never rejected a casual conversation. she can admit that he's a good conversationalist.

 

— but while gabriel's reputation is clean, stella's sights would linger as he'd turn away and walk off to the next person to pester. maybe it's because stella's much more reserved compared to him, but she's always felt something off about how he would just befriend absolutely anyone. or at least try to. almost as if to have some kind of monopoly over people. it makes her feel much better that she's not alone regarding this thought, sharing the same sentiment with ian. if stella had to be honest, she didn't care about staying in touch or reconnecting with gabriel after graduation. but until gabriel poses a threat to her or those close to her, stella will remain friendly and civil whenever they interact. just like she always has done.

 

— as for gabriel, he never thought twice about her until he uncovered her dirty schemes. he remembered the chills running down his spine when the evidence proved his suspicions correct; the laugh out of disbelief and amusement. unbeknownst to her, she earned gabriel's deep respect for being the sneaky, twisted she was. they had much more in common than he thought. had he not spotted that pager in her purse, stella wouldn't have crossed his mind at all as a suspect, let alone the culprit. recalling his observations and the end result of the event, gabriel connected the dots. she did it all for ian. lucky bastard. 

 

— gabriel wonders what he could do with a woman like her. well, gabriel thought, she got exactly what—or more like who—she wanted. he respects that. so he doesn't see why he can't wish well and manifest for her by calling her mrs. jeong when she and ian became a couple. stella was absolutely clueless about the sentiment behind gabriel's whole "mrs. jeong" shtick.

 

the next time they'd personally meet after news of the engagement, gabriel seemed especially delighted to congratulate stella. "thank you." he doesn't miss the twinkle in her eyes. and he nods, "of course!" his sights graze over the ring on her finger.

 

... after all, she got what she wanted and more with that cute, little stunt of hers.

 

 

"esme and gabriel," stella repeated, "together?" her friend nods, anticipating a comment. "well," stella had to ponder, "that's kinda cute." only kinda.

 

— and when they broke up, stella did a 180. esme was too good for him anyway! despite not being close, stella was always partial to esme due to a few factors. esme felt much more of a genuine person, upfront in her thoughts and ideas even if it gave way to some clashing. granted, stella would be taken aback by some of esme's brash moments, but she quickly grew to admire esme for unapologetically taking up space as a woman. perhaps stella was also partial to her after the breakup simply because esme is a woman. women supporting women! unless stella deems them an obstacle, but that was only one time! 

 

— during their university years, most of their interactions occurred with a mutual friend bridging the gap. they've hung out multiple times in group settings, whether on campus or at outings. stella never minded her presence and always welcomed her companionship. after graduation, however, there hasn't been a conscious attempt from both sides to meet or stay in contact. they aren't close enough for that.

 

— every once in a while, though, they'd bump shoulders at major fashion events. it's always a quick but pleasant encounter. they'd greet each other, exchange comments about the event, catch up, and wish each other well until whenever they next meet. or, if the event is dreadfully boring and they find themselves not as busy, they'd keep each other company.

 

— it's a bit funny that it took them to graduate mandela and have their career to get to know each other better. esme never thought much about stella besides being the occasional good company, but she's gained more insight as she's seen stella do her respective part of the fashion industry. there's more to stella's capabilities than what most of their peers think, it's a bit of a shame that she doesn't care much to make full use of it. they can be seen as almost opposites in this regard. esme's mettle is constantly tested, while stella cares not for recognition.

 

but in a society rampant with misogyny, stella is quick and clear to shut down any stupid 'dumb supermodel' remarks about esme. "no, everyone knows she's brilliant." stella drops it at that. a statement; assertive and a subtle reminder of their lack of personal proximity to esme.

 

perhaps it's also a bit of a reminder of their place on the social class ladder. stella likes to be petty every once in a while.

 

 

it was easy to overlook stella's shift in demanour when it came to ian, but her friends didn't miss it. the attentive gaze and the thoughtful silence; she was absolutely invested.

 

— honestly, it started off as a tiny crush. they met through mutual friends, he caught her eye, and she found herself constantly curious about him. the more she heard about him, the more her crush solidified into romantic feelings. how could it not? he was hard working, smart, honest (to a fault, but it was a breath of fresh air when she's used to disingenuous people), and the right amount of sociable and charming. stella knew an ideal partner when she saw one.

 

— but for a long while, she couldn't get past the stage of friends. not that she didn't appreciate it, of course. stella liked how they'd be in their own little world whenever they needed a breather away from keeping gabriel at arm's length. but that wasn't enough. she was getting ansty and paranoid over the lack of progress, so she got rid of who she considered an obstacle, then carefully wedging herself in as emotional support. she was happily providing all the patience, time, and effort now that ian was letting her. the simple meet-ups to offer respite from the loss of a friendship soon fostered an in-depth relationship with lots of trust and support. stella felt like she was at the top of the world when they became a couple.

 

— and while the process to place herself as the optimal romantic partner for him wasn't exactly respectful of his liberty to choose, stella is absolutely accommodating to ian ever since she's been confident in their relationship. zero traces of her prior possessiveness to be detected; just unbridled love and devotion. she's aware of the dynamic between him and his father and thus, gently encourages him to enforce his boundaries. she has full faith in him and his capabilities but she's never overbearing with it; rather, it's portrayed as patience and acceptance in whichever pace and decision ian decides to go with. at times, still, stella worries whenever he is pushed (typically by his father) to do things at the expense of his comfort, or whenever things can be held over his head in the future.  

 

— they've adjusted together in their transition between university and their careers,

gabriel gives a curious grin, "SO HYPOTHETICALLY, IF YOU WERE TO MURDER SOMEONE, WHAT WOULD YOU USE?" stella raises her eyebrows, a perplexed smile withholding a laugh, "is this what you've been asking everyone?" gabriel presses, "and now it's your turn!" her smile turns into an ironic one, "fun." stella looks far off into the distance, absentmindedly swirling the wine in her glass, almost as if trying to summon an answer. "towels?" an idea is visibly brewing in her head, "you can waterboard someone to death, right?" 

 

your answer amuses him, leading him to continue. "AND HOW WOULD YOU GET AWAY WITH IT?" oh, not another question. "gabriel," stella huffs, partially in jest but also in exasperation, "you can't expect me to come up with an airtight murder plan on the spot—" gabriel interrupts, "just try!" at his encouragement, and his insistence, stella lets herself brainstorm. "well," her voice trails, "it'll depend on where i am, what's available to me and what's not."
