Do you see that pretty girl in the corner of the canteen eating alone, looking whistfully at the people around her? That's Im Yeoreum. She's been around for years now but people hardly know her and she hardly talks with anyone. Sure likes those Inkigayo sandwiches tho.

Yeoreum... isn't super good at humaning to be honest, she's a winning combination of awkward, shy, and proud that is highly entertaining in font of the camera as hosts gleefully get her as flustered as possible. Off camera, though? Off camera it just leaves her lonely. How do you go from polite bows and small talk to being bffs?? It always seems to her like everyone around her is so deeply entrenched in ther own friendships, groupmates giggling together, labelmates who have trained together for years, inseperable friends meeting backstage. Everyone already has their friendships, how is she supposed to establish herself? And her and the rest of Adora... well... it ain't great. It never feels like there's room for her, you know?

All she has is work and work is drying up.

This is a Real Problem, you see for years Yeoreum has pushed her problems away and focused on her work. She was ambitious, she wanted to push her career to the maximum. She couldn't be miserable if she was hurrying toward the next schedule, she couldn't feel alone if she was bantering with some variety host or other, she couldn't feel like if the fans were shouted her name. She put life on a shelf in exchange for dance routines and television shows. There's a real fierce stubborn pride in her, the kind that hates admitting something's wrong, that hates showing weakness. She'd keep her chin up and she'd show everyone that she was successful cause success meant happiness, right?

But now all of that is ending, her schedules are drying, and life is knocking on her door. Do you know how much you've missed? Life asks. Have you even really lived? It was easy to ignore her feelings when she was hurrying from schedule to schedule, now she comes home to an empty hollow dorm with hours to spare.

Life is inside of her, trying to get out. In the quiet hours of the night Yeoreum looks out to the city that never sleeps with an ache but something stops her. She's scared, too insecure to try it on her own. The glass is cold under her touch, she leans closer, her breath fogs up the glass. What wonders lie on the other side? She wants to know. She needs to know.

Hidden inside of her is a girl who is surprisingly assertive and daring, a girl who has a thirst for living. She aches to shed her fears and take a leap for once! She's suppressed life long enough, it's time she lets life back in. All she needs is an excuse, all she needs is someone to stand by her, to have someone there so she can't chicken out of this. Yeoreum is ready to spread her wings, Yeoreum is ready to be an active part of this world for once. She's ready to barge in on drag shows in Itaewon, to go hiking at midnight, oh god to go see the sea again! Come on Seokho, keep up!

Is this a ridiculous situation? Yes. But it's the exact ridiculous situation she desperately needed.
background
Small island girl, dreams of stardom and big city life, blink if you've heard this one before. Yeoreum's childhood was all running across the beach, swimming in the sea, living the island life. It was carefree and happy and simple, oh how she misses the days when she'd go from school straight to the sea, the days of getting sand in her textbooks, the days helping her parents with the chicken restaurant's deliveries. She used to put on her rollerblades and deliver the chicken across the city, her knees would be filled with bandaids but she'd never drop the food.

Of course she'd dreamed of stardom here and there, she was a teenager at some point after all, but she'd never actually thought it would happen. She was just a regular teen wasn't she? Before she got scouted her plan was to study something like sociology or literature at a very non-prestigious university and figure things out from there but she ended up delivering chicken to what turned out to be a Woollim scout who was just as surprised as she was when he handed her her business card and asked her to audition.

Some weeks of perplexion and a trip to Seoul later and Yeoreum was signed. She had like -2 skills, could barely hold a tune and had very little coordination, she got in purely on her pretty face and her positive attitude. And then 2 months later she was hastily shoved into AdoreU while totally not ready or trained in any way, thrown into a hostile environment with no guidance at all.

Thus started 4 years of loneliness and hard work and pride and stubborn pretense and general Bad Feels. Her career blossomed though, and then it shriveled again and now she's confronted with all the things she'd been too busy to face before. Fun stuff.

Enter an Inkigayo sandwich, but not in the way you're thinking.
trivia
- She missed the sound of the waves and the salty smell and the screeches of seagulls so very much.

- She's death on rollerblades, your death to be precise cause she'll be KILLING IT.

- Gullible a all hell, will believe anything you're trying to sell her.

- Openminded in that kind of she's grown up on conservative stereotypes about Things but is also overeager to broaden her horizons and Do Better.

- She's been criticized a whole lot for being a horrible singer and dancer, she's mostly desensitized to it now but it ed her up before. Yeah she's , she trained for like 2 months!!!

- No chicken is as good as her parents' very own Angry Chicken 앵그리 치킨 (So So Angry). All inferior chicken shall be judged.

STAGE NAME Yeoreum
IDOL GROUP AdoreU
GROUP TWIN Lovelyz
POSITION TWIN Yein
COMPANY Woollim
DEBUT DATE 2014 but she joined in 2015

IDOL HISTORY

AdoreU is an odd group to label. They're from a mid-tier company, sister group to one of its generation's premier boy groups. They've had big hits in the past, most people decently in tune with Korean pop music will know they exist, but the only ones who truly care about them are their own die hard fans.

Experts might point to them as a classic care of bad timing, coming in with the innocent group concept that was already going out of style at their debut with a company who refused to adapt. This left them with a fanbase of mostly middle aged men who buy lots of albums and merch with their disposable incomes, who yell their lungs out at concerts, who creep at fansigns. Meanwhile anyone else would be like "Lovelyz? That Woollim group? I couldn't recognize one of them on the street, really."

Looking back one could point to their early controversies and weak releases to what was holding them back. Upon debut they were criticized for being ordinary-looking, for having no members with star appeal. "Anyone can become an idol nowadays" malicious comments read. Coupled with a bullying scandal for Chaewon she never really recovered from, AdoreU's launch was rocky at best.

That's where Yeoreum came in. She'd auditioned for Woollim just 2 months prior with her sweet smiles and natural charm. She had that perfect innocent sweet charm paired with impressive visuals, the choice to add her to the group was easily made.

Yeoreum's relationship to the other girls was instantly tense, mostly thanks to management constantly pitting them against each other and shaming them for their perceived shortcomings. Yeoreum was an obvious management favourite and most of the solo opportunities went to her. It didn't help that their first successful single was also the first with Yeoreum [Achoo].

Yeureum's reaction was to withdraw. She was under pressure too, couldn't they see that? Her withdrawal was perceived as arrogance by the others. The divide widened and widenened and never mended.

Meanwhile their fanbase worsened with each year as their sliver of relevance faded. The uncle fans got rowdier and more daring, yelling for poses, taking photos, being general creeps. Yeoreum never got the brunt of it, her image was always squeaky clean innocense. Sijoo, Jaein, and Chaewon had it much more (more divide there).

And then releases slowed and slowed as Woollim focused more on their new girl group, giving AdoreU yearly perfunctory releases. Yeoreum is the only one who still gets semi-regular jobs but she's something of a C-lister. Endearing to those who know her but hardly present in the public conciousness.

This suits her just fine.

EXTRA

- She still lives in the dorm but it's mostly empty now that the group is on temporary hiatus while the company focuses on their rookie groups. Yeoreum is still there though as the only one who gets regular schedules. One big empty dorm.

- Speaking of, the dorm itself is still used during promotions and she finds it so stiffling to be there. She's pretty done with the group honestly but she has 2 more years to go.

- She prefers their more chic songs like Lost n Found or their summery songs like Wag-Zag.

- She hates Wow so much and then it gets stuck in her head for a week.

- One of those groups that has zero recognition from international fans. If her and Seokho are ever outed she'd probably get most hate just for being from not being from a 'cool' group/

PARK CHOSONG, 91, IDOL
Chosong is their leader, the one who's carried the burden of responsibility for all of them. She's always been the most mature of them all, grown up quick to assume the role of leader, and she's tried to treat Yeoreum with maturity and respect... and that's about all she can epect from Chosong. Not outright hostility, but pofessional courtesy. To Chosong Yeoreum is the interloper to her ducklings and, since Yeoreum never managed to move past that status, thus she has stayed. The awkward step-duckling Chosong is responsible for, but not quite as resonsible for as for her other ducklings, no hard feelings.

Twin: Baby Soul, FC: Chorong (Apink)

BANG JINAH, 93, IDOL
Jinah is the third-most popular member of the group,  a big step down from Sijoo but still. She's the fake maknae type character on tv, though she's a lot more subdued off-camera. The girl with the golden voice, she's loved by connoisseurs of vocals and sometimes gets to go to vocal shows, though she lives in Seoul and generally only uses the dorm when she has to.

She's fairly chill with Yeoreum's presence, she doesn't blame Yeoreum for being added to the group but hasn't warmed up to her either, mostly because Yeoreum didn't do much to warm herself up to Jinah either. She's fairly neutral on the whole idea, she mostly feels she'd like Yeoreum more if it didn't constantly feel like Yeoreum was only here for herself, you know?

Twin: Kei, FC: Minah (Girl's Day)

LEE SIJOO, 94, IDOL
Sijoo is the second-most popular member of the group and the most popular amongst AdoreU's fans. She has the iest image and the darkest sense of humour. She's also the one who hates Yeoreum the most. She's fiercely protective over the girls she's trained with and did not appreciate an interloper she's never met take over her group, turning all of them into her backup dancers where management was concerned.

When she looks at Yeoreum she sees someone who has never given a damn about them, who got her debut handed to her on a platter, got opportunities to advance her career, all over the backs of the rest of them. She's convinced Yeoreum doesn't give a damn about the rest of them and will bail from the group at the first opportunity, which isn't exactly wrong with how ostracized Yeoreum feels.

They might understand each other and find they have more in common than they thought but that would require actually talking to each other, wouldn't it?

Sijoo is around the dorm most often, she lives in Ilsan, close enough to make trips to Seoul but too far to stay at home during schedules. Since she's second popular she has some schedules and tends to stay a day or two at the dorm during filming.

Twin: Mijoo, FC: Mijoo

YEOM JAEIN, 95, IDOL
Jaein is the group's visual, though she's a blip in the beautiful pool of kpop visuals. She's constantly getting for not being able to sing or not being visual enough or not being chipper all the time and it's been eating away at her motivation and self-esteem. Added to that is the constant arguments between group fans and Yeoreum akgaes whether Jaein is truly the visual or whether it would've just been rude to give the title to the true visual who came in late.

Jaein, more than anything, is looking forward to when the contract ends so she can retire and find a nice boyfriend and never face a camera again.

Twin: Jiae, FC: Haein (Laboum)

KIM NAMSOO, 95, IDOL
Most likely to swear out the company when management's backs are turned. Namsoo is a fierce little thing, kept in check only by the slivers of a career she clings to. She's also the one Yeoreum respects the most, if only for her honesty, but also for her bravery and strength. She's ruthless but fair in her judgments.

Currently she's embroiled in a plastic surgery scandal after her latest proceidure didn't go very well and netizens noticed. She keeps her chin raised and her shoulders tense, tries not to let it get to her. First they complain she's too ugly and now they complain tha she tried to fix it. Typical.

Twin: Jin, FC: Namjoo (Apink)

100x130

RYU JUSEONG, 97, IDOL
Juseong has probably been the nicest to Yeoreum, she's the one who feels bad about the gap between all of them but it's really mostly pity and Yeoreum knows it and therefore hates it. In the beginning she'd eat out of Juseong's hand for any scrap of friendliness but it was very apparently that it was never more than scraps and as Yeoreum's pride engulged her she felt more and more resentment for the pity, worse than the outright resentment.

Twin: Sujeong, FC: Sujeong

100x130

CHOI CHAEWON, 98, IDOL
Chaewon used to be awful to Yeoreum, she knows it and she regrets it in the kind of way someone feels guilt while also being so ashamed of it she doesn't want to ever acknowledge it. When Yeoreum was added Chaewon was just a teenager, as miffed as everyone else and taking it up a notch to cater to group dynamics and peer pressure. When she looks back at the time she completely froze Yeoreum out she feels like a total but it's hard to own up to that kind of feeling so she just doesn't.

Now? Now it feels like too little too late. Of course, Yeoreum hasn't made an effort either, she tells herself. It's not just her fault that the chasm is there now between them, is it? She tries to reach out sometimes, but too little too late.

Right?

Twin: Jisoo, FC: Arin (OMG)

100x130

KIM SHINSOOK, 83, MANAGER
AdoreU is one of the few groups blessed with a female manager but Yeoreum really does see it that way. There are some male managers that work with them too sometimes but each of them has been brusque and dismissive while Shinsook actually cares for them and knows their struggles.

Yeoreum has many fond and equally as many embarrassing memories, like that time she got her period with a vengeance at Music Bank and Shinsook high tailed it to the nearest convenience store to get her pads and pain killers. Shinsook has her back, that's the one thing Yeoreum is sure of. She'd die for Shinsook.

FC: Kim Shinyoung

100x130

R.E.X
She loves them. She love absolutely all of them. Is this what it's like to be in a group that actually gets along? she thinks, as she giggles at Hajun's recent embarrassing Seokho story or hangs wide-eyed onto Namgi's every word as he dramatically recounts their last scheme or falls completely for whatever bull Jungmin is peddling now. They're like coming home to a family she's never had.

Wonil is one of her favourites, surprisingly. The others can overwhelm her sometimes, she's not used to being around people THIS loud, and there's something about the conspiratorial eyerolls of the visual that really make her feel like she belongs... before he joins in on the idiocy.

What comes next might surprise you

S: *brushes his hair back* "Hey can you do first aid cause you make my heart stop (;"
Y: "Look! This fish kind of looks like Namgi, see those lips- oh sorry, what did you say?"
S: "Oh- eeeh... wait, holy , you're right!"
.....
Y: Oppa, are you checking yourself out in the aquarium glass?
S: .... Nooooo

Yeoreum is completely unaffected by Seokho's various attempts at treating her as he'd normally treat a conquest. She's not really interested in him like that, I mean sure he's pretty but that's not why he's here! He's here to be a partner in crime, to be an excuse to leave the house, to be a witness and participant to adventures! She's far too busy actually enjoying herself and paying attention to the world around her to pay attention to how he's flexing in the corner.

In truth, she's also a little scared and overcompensating for it big-time. She did drag him into this and she worries someimtes that he doesn't care as much for the adventure as she does. She's doing him a solid, right? That's his own reward, right? But the adventure calls to her more than her worry does, and then he's right next to her laughing at the fish with the Namgi lips or getting powdered sugar all over his clothes at this quaint bakery she overheard someone talking about backstage and the worries alleviate.

They're both awkward ducks fumbling a bit with how they're supposed to interact with each other. Yeoreum has never been very good with making friends and she's at once shy and brash, apologetic and bossy. It helps that Seokho seems as much a fish out of the water with this arrangement as she does, it helps balance out her own discomfort until both of their blocks are stripped away, for Seokho he's without his airs, for Yeoreum she's without her self-imposed limitations. It's easier to talk to him, the real him. When he lets himself be vulnerable around her it strips some of her defenses too and she hasn't realized how much she's needed someone with whom she can speak honestly, can drop her pride (well, some of her pride) and bare her soul, one small part at a time.

It's a journey of self-discovery, fun, twoo wuv, friendship, adventure, and most importantly, sheer and unbridled stupidity, all for the price of one!

love story
She grabs her phone, it's 0:30 and she's feeling antsy. "Are you doing anything?" she writes. Her thumb hovers over send, hesitating. She erases the message. "Have you ever been to Itae-" she erases it again. "Pick me up, we're going to Itaewon" she pauses, then writes again with a giggle. "."

Like most great romances, it all started with an Inkigayo sandwich.

Well, it also started when Yeoreum was at a music show, casually taking the scenic route to the toilet to enjoy some alone time, and she happened to overhear voices coming from a nearby dressing room, door ajar. "Hyung, you're such a hoe, there's no way you can keep a relationship going for more than two dates." She didn't mean to eavesdrop but, really to her defense, they were rather loud and unsubtle. "Seokho. We bet you all the meat you can eat for the rest of next year that you can't date someone for longer than a year."

She vaguely knew who Seokho was, he was in that group, R.E.X., that was aggressively marketed towards thirsty women. She'd never talked to him much, she never talked to anyone much, but she remembered vaguely that she'd given him her sandwich once when he'd been hungry, he'd only just debuted and she knew how tough the dieting could be even for men, so she'd offered him her sandwich.

What she did not expect was that, an hour later, Seokho approached her while she was at the vending machine with some truly cringey pickup line. She was the one he was trying to date for a bet?! But wait, the cogs in her brain were rolling... what if.... what if......

"I'll play along."

"What?"

"You're doing this for a bet right? I overheard. I'll play along if you want to win it."

It's pretty crazy, and definitely not motivated by the fact that she has no friends, her members don't like her, and her apartment is so very lonely. She would never be that sad, nope. This is just for science, science and excitement!

tl;dr: he tries to woo her for a bet, she accidentally overhears s talking about it, she cuts him a deal: she'll play along, she's bored of staying in her gilded cage and this might just be the kind of antic she's been waiting for.

And so start some truly awkward first dates as Seokho tries to put his ever reliable moves on her, not really sure how else to interact with girls, while she's like it's not very effective

And so they go on adventures together, some big and some small. Yeoreum takes the lead most of the time, she's lived passively for so long that she relishes the opportunity to actually make decisions for once and gets a little bossy. For her it's about adventure and experiences and getting out of the usual idol routine she's been stuck in, but it's also about having someone to do things with and finding a friend to share things with. What's the point of doing fun and amazing stuff if there isn't someone else there to laugh with and to drape a drag queen's feathery boa over his shoulder after dancing to a spectacular rendition of Dramarama on a gay club dancefloor??

They grow close, of course they grow close. For Yeoreum he's dependable and he's nice and he's fun and she starts to feel comfortable around him. Hidden depths are explored, things said that she's never dared admit aloud before. The Seoul nightscape still looms but now she's no longer alone, dwarfed by the light and the shadows. It can simply be beautiful without making her feel small.

And of course this a rom com and our heroes are not immune to Cupid's arrows. Little moments where holding hands doesn't feel forced anymore, where they entwine fingers not just because REX is watching.

Dumb trivia:

Like literally everyone knowing the two of them are "dating" a week after the fact cause they're so unsubtle/dumb

Everyone else: making shy dreamy eye contact with their crush/significant other hoping nobody notices
Yeoreum: tries to make the dumbest of faces at him backstage to try and make him laugh

They're so dumb, they're really not careful at all not even when they're out on dates but somehow, SOMEHOW, nobody recognizes them together. Like they'll split up and Seokho will go around the corner and instantly there's someone who's like "Seokho?!?! Autograph PLS!!!" or Yeoreum takes three steps after they've said goodbye and she runs into someone she's sure is a Dispatch reporter just coming out of the building.
