❒ korean native. Minyoung speaks with a gangwon dialect, but a life of dreaming about being an idol has made her try to learn the "idol"  way of speaking from a young age. An extensive course at a seoul dialect later, and she can shake off her hometown way of speaking if she concentrates a lot. During interviews it's fine, but get her to talk fast, or frustrated, or excited, or anything that would break her concentration and the gangwon will burst out of her like a volcano. The rural girl can't be tamed, after all.

APPEARANCE minyoung has always been told that she was too pretty for the countryside. It began with a lighthearted comment from Girls' Generation's Yuri on national television - minyoung was nine and adorable and they cooed over her singing Gee in a squeaky voice and the awkward movement of the limbs of a child. But Minyoung grew, and the comments kept on coming. She is beautiful in the exact way Korea absolutely adores. Straight brows and small face, plump lips and straight nose. She is tall and she is thin and even her hair is pretty, long and dark and shiny. Of course, at the time, the hair hasn't met Mr. Bleach and Mr. Hair Dye, and the eyes hadn't been coerced into a double eyelid surgery, but Minyoung was beautiful even then. She has always been described as too beautiful for Yuchiri, too beautiful for the countryside. No one was surprised when news came out of her leaving the village to brace the big city and the dream of being a star.

STYLE there isn't much style to talk about. Minyoung has spent her fair share browsing through various magazines and blogs with her friends, looking at pretty clothes and pretty models, and admiring how shiny and foreign it all looked, like a faraway world that never really came to Yuchiri. She never really got the hang of it, even after all this time. Her fashion sense is atrocious, and she can't coordinate an outfit to save her own life. Jeans and t-shirts are the best you can hope if you want her to dress normally, but Minyoung likes pretty clothes and would definitely try her hand at fashion, even if the result is a bunch of pieces thrown together with absolute disregard to color coordination and how they would look together. So jeans and t-shirts it is, unless the stylists give her pretty clothes to wear - which she always loves. 

 

 

 

 

Oh Minyoung is not the girl you expect her to be. Be it the doe-eyed, innocent-looking vibe she gives off thanks to her appearance, or be it the fact that she's from the countryside and sixteen and all alone in the big city. You expect her to ask what the subway is.

 

You don't expect her to shoot you a glare - a pretty impressive one at that, for a doe-eyed sixteen-year-old - and tell you that she is more than capable taking care of herself, though your help is highly appreciated. She doesn't think she needs anyone's help, even if she still asks you a thousand different questions - it's not really helping if she's the one who's asking, right? Minyoung doesn't think so, at least, and she doesn't realize the hypocrisy of it. She thinks that she has settled in Seoul all by herself, when in reality she wouldn't have a clue what to do without the trainee manager who helped her from the second she stepped out of the car with her small black suitcase.

 

Her confidence has roots and they are deeply edged into her skin, drinking from her vanity and from her narcissism and growing taller and stronger with each day passing. Dig deeper, below the outer shell of a pretty face and a sociable demeanor, and you will see how self-centered Minyoung is. It's not even entirely her fault - being told from a young age that she was beautiful, so beautiful that she didn't belong in the countryside but on tv, has taken its toll. She hasn't been criticized many times in her life: always the "aw, but Minyoungie is so pretty, no matter" again and again and again. In the village, beauty was as much of a crop as cabbage, and Minyoung was the big prize to showcase. She loves beauty, and she loves her own beauty above all. She's not afraid to tell you that, either. Modesty is one step from naivety, and Minyoung is neither. Be proud of who you are, your opinion is what matters most, after all - though the adoration of others' is always appreciated.

WORKAHOLIC - has worked on her parents' farm, has always worked and worked and isn't used to getting a break. Feels useless if she's not doing something, like a day wasted. Isn't afraid to get hands dirty, and takes the cruel idol schedule with as much courage as she can. 

Easily excited - she might not want to give off the vibe of the clueless country girl, but damn if Seoul isn't full of excitements. She adores chain stores, and cafes, and malls, and everything that symbolizes the big city. Because she's always been above the countryside, always fit for that exact environment where it's all about glamour and beauty and style. Some of it is disappointing: the people in Seoul may be less dirty, and their hands less calloused, but they stink all the same. They're not the beautiful masses that she has seen on TV. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Nothing really happened in Yuchiri. A village in the deep countryside of Gangwon, life was all about the village: crops, livestock, community, and tradition. Into that life Oh Minyoung was born, and into that life she would've died, if it wasn't for Invincible Youth.

In 2009, a bus arrived at Yuchiri, and out came seven girls.
