He tells lies for a living. Not the petty ones that spring criminals out of jail, but the ones that alter nations. Being an ambassador means that you must shoulder the weight of the world, he has learned that from his parents. He doesn't mind, it's his burden to carry, though the weight of it breaks his back day by day.

He's been stationed in Tehran, his first assignment as a diplomat. A year later he was already in Oslo, but he was not the same.

Then, there was Pyongyang. He was older, and the notions of youthful idealism long erased from his mind. Experienced, with a reputation of a silver tongue, and fluency in Korean (albeit the south korean dialect) had marked him as the perfect man for the position. Seven years. He had carried the weight of Britain on his shoulders as he watched North Korea and couldn't do anything. And he knew that what he saw was just the tip of the iceberg. He was permitted to see that. He could only imagine the things he was not.

Switching stations to South Korea had felt like entering an unrealistic dream. A sweet lullaby meant to lure him into a dream that would make him forget what he saw. But he couldn't. How could he be a silent observer when he knew of what was out there? He'd be worse than those who know and ignore - he had been there, he saw it all. He could not be a hypocrite any longer, not like all those surrounding him with their fake smiles and fake tears. There was only one solution in his powers. A sacrifice had to be made.

 

But then, of course, there was Sunyoung.
