your first impression towards miyeon maybe clouded by your judgement of pretty girls getting everything they want in life due to pretty privileges. in some way, it's true – she wouldn't be here if she isn't as pretty as she is. in fact, it became miyeon's identity. miyeon liked the identity though; it's better to be known as 'the pretty girl' than some nicknames she heard across the cafeteria during their break, like 'the girl who's about to be kicked out' or 'the girl with nothing to offer'. she' just a plain basic "pretty" girl, to the point where people forgot that she was a failed actress.

miyeon hates to show this personality trait of hers – but she's really hardworking. she sees this as a weakness. in her opinion, she feels that if people saw her effort, she would be clowned if she didn't debut. that's why whenever other trainees would ask if she trained hard, she would answer "kind of". she's scared of people's criticism – if they would critic her hard enough if she trains hard but still, did not live up to their expectation. 

miyeon is also independent. your experiences made you more matured and miyeon is a living proof. she could make up her own decisions and she's very calm and collected in stressful situations. she could fend for herself and is emotionally okay with being alone. it does raise her guards up when it comes to trusting new people but she personally thinks that it's somewhat needed to make sure that her heart could endure all the criticism and hardships she would encounter in the future.

despite that, she's still optimistic about life though! she's very positive and cheerful. she believes that everyday's a new adventure and while sometimes, her schedules can get a little bit redundant, it's the little things that matter the most. she remains positive during hardships and believes that every cloud has its silver lining. plus, every problem has its' own solutions. just like mathematics!

miyeon is also very loyal. although it may be hard for her to open up and let her guards down, she's very protective and selfless when it comes to her friends and relatives. she believes that her friends and relatives are the one who shaped her, therefore, their happiness are also apart of her happiness.

miyeon is also very friendly! she's a good listener and could carry a conversation with you. she may come across arrogant when you first meet her but if she vibes with you, then, she would definitely turn into a chatterbox. 

she's also very open-minded. being exposed to the western media where everyone should be accepted for who you are does shape her way of thinking that everybody is their own individual and we should accept everyone; she sees people past their uality, religion, skin colour and past mistakes. she sees them by their hearts – as cliche as it may seems. it has probably been the reason why she's the go-to girl for people to spill their hearts out. she's a great listener and would probably give you a peace of mind just by being there for you. 

reckless? yes, but in all of the wild things she did, she'll always own up to her mistakes. would she date without other people knowing? probably. would she trash talk a trainer for making her uncomfortable by glancing at her excessively? absolutely. a troubled child, some might call but she's not afraid to stand up for herself and her friends. she thinks that it's her responsibility; since it's a privilege she has. the pretty privilege that she has.

don't let the adorable smile fool you though. this girl knows how to steal hearts just by a wink. she knows the power that a hair flip has and she milks it out. being the manipulative girl she is, she would always ensure that things go by her way. higher marks than main vocals? mostly due to her charm. her fellow trainees giving her the center position in monthly evaluation sessions? thanks to her way of talking things up. this girl knows how to make her way up to the top. 

miyeon is very impulsive. yes; she's a responsible girl but that doesn't mean she thinks things through. she does whatever her heart tells her to – which can be disadvantageous at times (a lot of times, to be honest) but if something bothers you, then, just do it. as a matter of fact, if it was any of her 'wiseful' thinking doing the job, she wouldn't even be a trainee. she's the girl who would lead the team in sneaking fried chicken and beer into the dorm.

miyeon is very stubborn – she doesn't take no as an answer; and works hard to get everything that she needed. she has a strong view on certain things – and her views rarely can be waivered (except by certain people who knows how to talk some sense into her). 

miyeon is very materialistic as well – she was born, acknowledging how money does make the world go round and is always seen trying to flaunt the most branded items. gucci? probably bought it second-hand online; but no one needs to know. went to a five-star hotel for dinner? no one needs to know she starved by eating two pieces of bread for every meal two days prior to the 'grand' dinner. she's pretty much obsessed with looking better than everyone else – it doesn't mean she refuse to associate with those from the lower-class though, she just prefers the company of someone from the higher classes.

miyeon may seem like a petty, shallow character – obsessed with her wants to be more superior than others; but that doesn't mean that she would set the bar low when it comes to her pride. she knows that she would receive a lot of criticism as well as shallow remarks – some boys just see her as a pretty object, some girls see her as a threat – and acknowledging that she's a target of ual remarks and nasty comments, she learnt to fight back with words. she's quite known for fighting back others with her snarky comments and sarcasm.

that leads us to the trait 'irritable'. miyeon is not impatient – as a matter of fact, she's pretty patient. waiting for someone? no big deal; but she does have a lot of pet peeve. she would retaliate everytime she felt attacked – trainer complained she's gaining weight? let's fight. trainer told her friend that she's untalented? let's fight. her attitude of fighting back is one of the reasons why some of the trainers dislike her. however, it doesn't mean that she's short-tempered though. she's just sensitive but instead of crying, she expresses her sadness through anger. she's really tolerant and if you'd explain things to her, she would have gladly become obedient.

last but not least, miyeon is self-centered. she likes to be the center of attention and the world? it revolves around her. she's used to getting the attention – which explains the flaming charisma she has. this has also made her bossy. well, what is a queen without her orders, right? she's used to making decisions for herself and others – and unless if someone complains, she would think that her ideas are the best. (even if anyone complains, she still thinks her ideas are superior, so...) in a way, she's not that selfish. she does think about others – it's just that if your happiness doesn't mean a lot to her, she wouldn't care about you or your feelings. is it wrong to prioritize yourself more than others? i mean, if you don't, who would?

background

born in daegu, the second daughter of doctor jang and professor lee, miyeon is pretty much guaranteed a successful life — at the age of twelve, she mastered three languages; korean, english and mandarin. she was at the top of her class and she's pretty much the talk of the town (well, at least, the parents of her classmates). everything was going well for her until she became tired. long gone her passion for redundant extra classes, she wanted to try something new, and what more can it be than the life of glitz and glamour?

miyeon knew her parents would disagree – her parents set the future for miyeon since she was ten! she was supposed to be either a doctor like her father, a chartered accountant or a dignified lawyer; but a celebrity? never in a million years. miyeon wasn't that close to her father; more likely due to unresolved differences. therefore, it was a shocker that her father agreed to the whole acting experience; her mother – who is pretty much miyeon's bestfriend – was shockingly, against it. it was her father who convinced her mother to let miyeon chase her dreams.

miyeon became a trainee at the age of fourteen where she became an actress and had her first debut as an actress at the age of sixteen. 

TRAINING

trainee life isn't easy. well, it isn't particularly hard either but it's definitely not easy. miyeon first trained to become an actress. after two years of training, she debuted as an actress when she first landed an extra gig for a drama. her debut was a hit! it definitely didn't land her a top search in naver, but she still got a few calls. a few dramas later, miyeon slowly stopped having offers rolling down to her. it was hard to digest – for crying out loud! she's in sm, for god's sake. 

at the age of 19, jang miyeon was given the choice – to leave sm or to renew her contract, but as an idol trainee. jang miyeon is conflicted – she knew she couldn't leave sm or her mother would stop supporting her. i mean, one chance is all she got to prove to her mother. therefore, she decided to agree to the latter.

training as an idol was pretty hard as well – you may think nineteen is still young to start over? but in this cut-throat industry? no. she has to learn to dance two times quicker. the only upper hand she has is that she can play the piano quite good since she used to take piano lessons. aside from that, miss miyeon is pretty much an average trainee.

this is where the criticism kicks in. miyeon, the basic beauty. miyeon, the trainee princess. miyeon, the failed actress. miyeon had to swallow all the criticism alone – she knew she had a lot of time to improve herself since she joined right after red velvet debuted. she was determined to prove other people wrong.

when it comes to miyeon and her father – it's rather a complicated relationship. myungjae and miyeon know they both love each other dearly. however, due to the strictness of myungjae during miyeon's childhood and the differences they have in terms of their views in life made them distant; however, miyeon knows that myungjae will always be there to support her.

inna and miyeon is very close – a telepathic connection, you would say. miyeon is pretty much how inna is when she was a teenager. a young, wild spirit with passion. therefore, inna thought that she could handle miyeon by setting off some rules for her. as a matter of fact, their relationship turned sour for a few years when miyeon decided that being a celebrity was her calling. however, mother's love is the greatest love of all.

when inna saw the proud look of her daughter's face during her acting debut, inna knew that miyeon was made to be seen on the screen, loved by many. now, they always talk to each other and inna became on of her pillar of strength.

eunbi– or mostly knows as eunha– is one of the most cheerful friend you'll ever make. at first, it doesn;t seem to click that the two would be bestfriends. eunha is a cute, adorkable kid while miyeon is more of a stuck up brat who cringe after doing aegyo; but being deskmates really help them bond with each other. eunha debuted during high school where she'll tell all the deeds to miyeon while miyeon? she'll just hear her out.

despite that, they maintain a close relationship. while they may not talk to each other all the time due to their busy schedules, they still call each other often. miyeon acts like an older sister to her, giving her (bad) advices and being protective over her even though they both have the same age.

if you tell miyeon that she would be friends with youngmi when she started being a trainee again, she would have laughed. there's nothing wrong with youngmi – miyeon just feel... threatened. if there's one girl she would have to look out for, it definitely would be youngmi. she's pretty and her personality, while could be sometimes, odd; is seemingly refreshing. 

aside from that, miyeon just doesn't like how playful she is; cheerfulness? appreciated but too much cheerfulness? nauseating. however, when they started knowing each other during their debut preparation, she realized that youngmi isn't that bad of a person. miyeon still feel threatened though since they were picked to be the visuals of the group – sharing the spot.

however, time heals all; miyeon get to know youngmi better and well, she's actually a pretty decent person after all. they became closer day by day; from sharing the title visuals of gjsn, they bond over schedules and english, and then, they bonded over little things which gradually made them closer to the point where miyeon would pretty much say that youngmi is her bestfriend in gjsn.

all of this changes when sm entertainment released the deeds about youngmi and jaehyun. miyeon felt... betrayed. youngmi knew how she felt about jaehyun; but mostly, she knew how she hated the idea of sharing. sharing the visual title is one thing; but sharing a man? even if youngmi "didn't feel anything"? miyeon would never trust her again. miyeon still talk to her but you can see how distant miyeon treats youngmi. miyeon knew it isn't youngmi's fault but how can you like someone who 'stole' someone you love?

to tell you the truth– befriending boys weren't something appealing to miyeon. it's just that; well, there's nothing to talk about. miyeon is friendly but that doesn't mean she could carry a conversation without a topic. they met each other a few times but didn't really converse until the scandal of youngmi and jaehyun surfaced.

in every drama, there's always gonna be an antagonist. some may be purely evil but some may just be misunderstood; and by the lens of a drama junkie, miyeon is the antagonist in their relationship. miyeon knows the two like each other. so, as a revenge, miyeon tries to divert johnny's attention to herself; whether as a friend or as a lover, at that moment, miyeon didn't care. she wanted him to prioritize her over youngmi; just like how jaehyun prioritizes youngmi over her.

they pretty much bond over sharing stories — johnny with his stories in the america and miyeon with her stories of debuting as a teen actress and how she learnt english. they also bond over food and silly little things. whenever youngmi tries to speak to him, she'll try to cut her off.

a ball of sunshine. that's how you would describe jung jaehyun – his presence radiates positive vibes in the room and well, you would probably never see him without his infamous eye smile, paired with his dimples; they're enough to make another person smile. it's rather infectious– as some would say. jaehyun is also someone fun to be with – he knows how to crack a good joke here and there. jaehyun is a very laidback kinda person. he's never too uptight about anything – sad? maybe, but he's not the type of person to focus on a negative thing when there's ten positive things to look forward to. jaehyun is also clumsy – but that's okay, his clumsiness made him cuter. he's a weirdo; at times. oh, and this boy has a very wild imagination. in other words, jung jaehyun is the definition of carefree. c:

love story 

jang miyeon never see the appeal of befriending any male trainees – excluding the ones that like men as well, they bond on that – but aside of looking at boys, she never really try to talk to them. she had her eyes on lucas (she's a noona fan) and taeyong but then, she never really talk to them aside from the usual bowing.

with that being said, miyeon isn't really famous among trainees – jaehyun had never notice the girl until her debut stage. that was when she really shined through. it wasn't until they met backstage that he knew her name,

"jang miyeon? jangmi, like the rose? so, you're like pretty but prickly?"

as time flies, they surely did get along better. in a way, miyeon was attracted to his dorkiness. jang miyeon is a er for someone with a great smile; and jaehyun has a divine smile that would put the smiling emoji to shame. miyeon knew all of his favourite things – favourite food, his hobby, things that he doesn't like. well, everything. jaehyun; while sometimes, he can be oblivious to certain things, definitely made an effort to impress miyeon. he sent good morning texts, he told how his day was, he even got her a couple shirt. 

you can say that they're pretty much in a "썸 (some)" relationship. everyone in nct and gjsn realized that. well, they thought they were slick enough – holding hands under the table, how miyeon would sneak a peck on jaehyun's cheek while no one's watching, how jaehyun would wink whenever they make eye contact when the whole group were there – but really, everyone knew.

it's only a matter of time until one confesses their love to each other. the thing is – both didn't. miyeon didn't want to confess because she wants him to do it. she wants him to make up his mind and be committed in doing so. jaehyun is waiting for miyeon to do it because he's kinda scared of rejection. plus, even if he isn't, he was waiting for the right timing.

it wasn't until sm announced the two were dating. miyeon felt disappointed; no, she was devastated. she was angry. she felt cheated and betrayed. miyeon knew that the two didn't have anything together but the girl is impulsive; she hated feeling inferior towards youngmi, again. she is jealous. that was when she confronted jaehyun about it. they fought – it was a huge fight. miyeon said that jaehyun could say something about it – in her defense, he could have just said no.

it was a spur of the moment – miyeon obviously didn't think through when she heard about the news. it was partially her mistake and she admitted that. the fact that both weren't denying the news from the press made it seem as if they don't mind being paired together. however, there was one thing that ticked miyeon off. 

"you're getting mad about something i can't control? you're not even my girlfriend, for god's sake!"

never in miyeon's life has she ever felt betrayed. the feeling is worse than when you bought something online and it turned out to look trashy. no – this is something else. after that incident, they never talked to each other. miyeon became workaholic and jaehyun stopped visiting gjsn as often as he did before. miyeon didn't want to associate with someone who take her for granted. she thought that he was using her to play around; while jaehyun thought that they weren't compatible as miyeon didn't trust him enough. 

it's obvious to both gjsn and nct that the scandal broke the relationship off – and no one else felt guiltier than youngmi. now, the girls and boys are trying to make them realize that they need each other – especially youngmi. from the way miyeon steal glances to jaehyun, to the way jaehyun would ask youngmi about miyeon, it's obvious that they still love each other. it's just that they need a little push for someone to say "i love you".
