Itzy, Bop or Flop?

I actually just want to know what your thoughts are regarding JYP’s new girl group.

I just came from YouTube and saw that the views were already past the 6 million mark in less than 24 hours. I think it can reach 10 million if JYP stans or other fans will work hard to rewatch it multiple times.

Anyway, I watched the whole MV and I must say that the short-haired girl already caught my attention. I’m still in the process of learning their names, sorry. But, honestly, I find the song not catchy enough. The MV is cool, their fashion has attitude, the girls seem like they’re going to go places, the choreography was memorable and there were points in them that made a lasting impression, but I’ve pretty much forgotten the song now. I remember a part of the song which translates to something like being different, blah blah, loving myself more, blah blah, but overall I feel like I need to listen to it more than a few times to like it. Apparently the producer of the song worked with Monsta X before (I don’t know which song because I haven’t had the chance to search more about Dalla Dalla). I really feel like JYP should trust its artists more when it comes to writing, composing their own music. When they do, they’re a straight bop and always fresh.

So, umm, what are your thoughts about it? What do you think needs improvement? Or is improvement even necessary? Do they have the potential to be the new IT girls? Will they be able to garner recognition and wins?

OKAY FIRST OF ALL I'm soo sorry for not being able to reply to your wall post. I'll do it soon. I've just been caught up with things. And sometimes when I'm in a mood (aka stressed from school) I don't like socialising a whole lot).

I honestly did not enjoy the song. I'm indifferent to most JYP groups atm (except for DAY6), but I still drop by to listen to everyone's songs. I can say confidently I did not like the song at all, even though I was originally very interested in the concept/song/group. I wasn't sure what I was expecting but it was not this? Some people are arguing that it's their version of IGAB by SNSD, but I'd beg to differ. IGAB by SNSD, although messy, had some sort of structure and it was super catchy. In fact, I would say that the song itself was musical genius because of how well everything went together. The way Dalla Dalla started, I was thinking there would be a super big bass drop for the chorus... kind of disappointed it didn't happen. I also did not appreciate the rap, nor did I like the "shouting" part around 2:45--I also think the chorus was much too bright compared to the opening and it didn't seem related. The chorus or the part that came a bit before the chorus too? It sounded too much like a kid taunting someone, which I don't like. There wasn't enough of the bass or repeating chords to signal that it was the same song, nor were there enough of a transition at the very least to signal that it was still the same song. I mean, people can argue the same with IGAB which people think is a bop, but I think Dalla Dalla was poorly structured. There's a few repeating motifs in IGAB in I would say most of the sections (the kind of annoying beeping sound in the background, as well as the strong chords you hear at the beginning when they start singing).

I don't hate this new girl group though. I think they have potential, just like Twice when they first debuted. I'm not a fan of Twice but I can appreciate how much they've improved over the years. The short-haired one really stood out to me. I can't tell if it's because she's the only one with short hair and hair colouring or if she has a slightly different voice colour, or she has a lot of presence.

Moving forward, I think JYP needs to give them a better song. I'm not asking for it to be SOTY worthy but it should be more coherent.. I'm all for groups experimenting with new genres. This song had A LOT of potential, I just think JYP is stuck on sticking to his ways of producing, and it came out like this. It sounds like something he had a hand in because it's quite innovative and gives me a *don't stone me* TWICE vibe during the chorus. I think they have potential to be the new IT girls, based off of the views they have right now. I'm contributing to it because I want to give this song a chance, but kind of failing. I can't base anything off of this song anyway--I don't like it so I can't comment on any of their skills. I'll do so when I actually like the song so it's fair. But I must admit--this song is VERY attention grabbing. I'm just super picky.

EDIT: I do think the lyrics' meaning is BOP material and if they stuck to adding more things that made the different parts of the song weave together, it would have really made this song THE song for me. (And maybe remove some of the talk-rapping/talk-shouting that JYP really likes).

EDIT2: This song kind of reminds me of Happiness by Red Velvet only because the structure is kind of really similar in some ways and is equally as bright and was also a debut song. Happiness had that drumming in the background throughout most of the entire song and the song would have been structurally confusing to listen to without it.
