TRAINING LIFE she got into sm through an open audition in 2012, and was a rather popular trainee - at least, on the surface. due to her personality, she felt that she had tons of friends but it soon became apparent that they only befriended her because they knew of her vocal ability and wanted to get on her good side so she'd help them in monthly evaluations. she noticed that she was only seen as competition or an asset soon enough, but never had the courage to confront them about it because she didn't want to be alone.
she was briefly placed into the lineup of sm's new girl group in 2013, but due to a lack of dancing talent she was then pulled and replaced by kang seulgi. she doesn't dislike seulgi for it, but instead saw it as a motivation for her to work harder. the thing about joowoo's dancing is that despite having electrifying stage presence and always having a smile on her face even when dancing complicated choreographies, she was behind on both talent and skill, messing up and forgetting steps constantly. thankfully, she spent most of her time training in the dance studio improving her dancing, and despite still being one of the weaker dancers in lumière, can hold her own and is often praised by fans for looking like she truly enjoys performing.

REACTION TO BOYCOTT joowoo knew the fans were angry about the debut, but she never expected a boycott. she felt like she'd been abandoned before being even given a chance, and won't hesitate to tell people that she spent many nights crying in the dorm when they first debuted. however, after a few calls to her father and late night talks with the other members, she resolved to turn her fear into motivation. she still remembers what her father said one night, "I know you're good enough, you know you're good enough, even your mom will. kongjoo-ah, you can do this." her father was right - it's not every day a young adult like her has a voice as soulful and deep as hers, and she was more than qualified to succeed. and if she succeeded, maybe mom would find her again. so she put on a smile and powered on, determined to make a name for herself.

kang chanhee, also known as chani of sf9, is only older than joowoo by five months, and with their families living practically next door, they were very close as children, often running around together and shrieking in delight. however, when chanhee moved to seoul to become a trainee at the tender age of ten, the two children drifted apart as they didn't have their own phones and couldn't keep in contact themselves. but then chanhee knew that joowoo had become a trainee in seoul as well and reached out to her, so the two have been tight again ever since. despite both of their busy schedules, they still take time to message each other every other day and have tons of inside jokes. they are extremely protective of each other and their close relationship is widely known between fans, who dote on the two of them like crazy and like tagging the other's official group instagram every time chanhee or joowoo post something.
kim yerim, also known as yeri of red velvet, has long been set to become a member of red velvet, which is why when joowoo was briefly placed into the red velvet lineup, the two grew close through training together. what made them even closer was the fact that yerim was a weak singer and a strong dancer while joowoo was a strong singer and a weak dancer. the two helped each other improve their skills and become better versions of themselves. when yerim stayed in the lineup and joowoo was kicked out, the two continued their friendship, practicing together till late before sneaking out for some store-bought ddeokbokki. when yerim debuted, they drifted apart slightly due to her busy schedule, but still maintained a close relationship. now that they've both debuted,they have more chances to meet up ( at award ceremonies, music shows etc. ) and have grown closer again. think yeri and kim saeron.

lee sanghyuk, also known as dawon of sf9, was introduced to joowoo by chanhee when lumière and sf9 had clashing promotion periods and joowoo went over to sf9's waiting area to greet her cousin. it's safe to say that joowoo harbours a rather large crush on sanghyuk ( "no, I don't! it's just a tiny, insignificant celebrity crush!" ) due to his easygoing personality and how he affectionately rubbed joowoo's hair while going "ahah, this is the infamous cousin we've heard so much about!" the two don't even keep in contact, they just nod and greet each other if they ever come across each other's paths, but joowoo can't stop her heart form jumping whenever she hears his name or sees him on tv. it's just a rather shallow crush though, and the members are pretty sure that their beloved main vocalist will get over it soon enough.
lee jeno and joowoo should not have met. they should not have become friends. similar thoughts run through the minds of nct and lumières' managers when they witness another terrible freestyle rap battle between the two 00 liners. they met as trainees and though not especially close, get along very well and always end up very rowdy and loud when they see each other. they exchange insults, fight each other playfully and pretty much just embarrass themselves every time. they won't exchange their deep dark secrets or anything, but their playful interactions during sm concerts are always something to look out for.

THE STORY when it comes to first impressions, joowoo definitely left a banging one on youngkyun. and I mean that literally: when joowoos stormed into sf9's waiting room to find chanhee, she slammed the door right into youngkyun, who crumpled on the floor in pain, nursing his poor, poor elbow. his temper flared, but when he looked up at joowoo's guilty expression, he softened and waved her away. it sort of offended him how joowoo's face immediately turned into a smile as she skipped to chanhee, but it didn't stop him from sneaking little glances at the girl every now and then, a small smile appearing on his face every time her loud laughter came into his earshot.
joowoo, on the other hand, was extremely sorry about the incident and asked chanhee for youngkyun's number to formally apologise ( jangmi thinks it's also because hwiyoung has a pretty face and joowoo is a teenager who likes pretty faces, but I digress. ) despite youngkyun being a terrible texter who typed extremely slowly and replied late with one word answers that effectively killed the conversation, they gradually progressed to being friends. I mean, if you can call joowoo pestering him endlessly and getting the eye-rolling emoji in response as what friends do. a part of youngkyun tells himself that joowoo is annoying and that he detests her presence, but the truth is without joowoo constantly making his phone buzz with notifs and sending him loud audio messages that make him wince, he gets bored and feels just a little bit empty.
when youngkyun isn't swearing to the gods that he doesn't enjoy her company, he and joowoo are actually very compatible friends, joowoo successfully getting him to loosen up and him teaching joowoo how to grow up. if joowoo had a day off and decided to visit her favourite cousin, the sf9 members would always comment on how cute joowoo and youngkyun were, but they'd always grimace and shake their heads, proclaiming that "I hate his/her company!"

"chanhee's at a drama filming, I'm sorry." he invites her inside to sit and wait, and he frowns at how joowoo sits on the edge of the couch, her back rigid and stiff. his eyes take in how red her knuckles are and how hard she's trying to keep herself from crying. he doesn't know what came over him, but he sat down and pulled joowoo into his arms, saying a simple phrase. "it's okay, let it out." and it's like he lifted the barricades of a dam, as joowoo howls into his shirt, clutching his hands tightly as she shakes in misery. it's the first time he notices how soft and fragrant joowoo's hair is, how tiny her frame is, how much he actually likes her.
he's not sure how to tell her this. they never see each other in real life unless she's visiting chanhee and saying it through text is just insincere. so when joowoo's birthday rolls around, he goes to her dorm at eleven thirty at night, calling her to come down. she does, and they sit at a nearby park. youngkyun gives her a tiny bag, gruffly telling her that it's nothing and she shouldn't take it too seriously. she opens the bag, finds a dainty pendant, and breathlessly turns to youngkyun, her eyes sparkling as she murmurs that it's beautiful. you're beautiful, he thinks, and before he can stop himself the words "I like you" have rolled off his tongue. joowoo beams. COMMENTS I'm really proud of this russian roulette inspired palette ; v ; before you comment on how unrealistic her voice is, I have a 17-year-old friend whose natural voice sound like bohyung's but can force her voice to sound airy, slightly nasally and light... which she says makes hurt after a while, so you can see where my inspiration for my character came from.
