she feels like objectively, there is not much to her – crippling shyness and a lack of confidence are her defining features, with some good old pessimism to top it all off. years of having a tunnel focus on her dream and spending each waking minute pursuing it made everything else regress. nothing else tempts her, she has no close friends or particular hobbies and her personality seems, even to her own eyes lately, as bland as plain toast. only now that she has reached her dream and debuted, she notices how emotionally stunted she became, a book with a pretty cover but the pages are blank. she feels like somewhere along the road, she lost her identity. that is, if she had one in first place because she can't remember a time where she didn't zeroed all in on her dreams.
the worst thing is, horan knows that an idol needs to entertain if they want to be successful. and she is not sure she can, she has a hard time just opening , cracking a joke seems impossible. therefore, after her long trainee journey, she feels like it was in vain, no one would end up liking her if they paid her more attention. sometimes she has the irrational fear that the management would just balk into her room and tell her to pack her stuff since debuting her was a mistake. it's a thought that keeps her up at night, steals her sleep and makes her crippling self esteem even more morose. so she made a resolve: to get less boring and more entertaining. but planning is easy, execution is more difficult. as an introvert who isn't expressive and had one single pastime for the last two years, even mudane stuff like starting a unprompted conversation with one of her group mates requires quite a bit of willpower.
now, to speak frankly, horan is too hard on herself - she just has so little confidence in herself that she can't see any of her positive traits. for example her dedication, she always gives her best and takes practice very seriously. horan is also reliable, is organized and punctual and always gets her tasks done. she is considerate of others without expecting anything in return. she tries to help others whenever she can, helping the cleaning ladies by taking out the trash, feeding the stray cats around the apartment, giving advices on singing technique. horan knows what it means to struggle and she doesn't want anyone to go through that.
however, horan also doesn't make a big deal out of any of that so the kind side of her remains mainly unnoticed. her relationship with the other girls is non-existent for the most part because horan seems to be just there, staying in the vicinity of them but without initiating or parttaking of a conversation.it's because she doesn't know how to reply or what to talk about. horan doesn't have much knowledge on anything except training, the entertainment gossip are as foreign to her as the world news or fashion or whatever topic they were talking about. and she rarely has opinions on anything because what if she's wrong? she simply minds her own business, stays non-judgmental and doesn't involve herself into conflicts. and after the other girls only got short-syllabed, generic answers to their questions, most of them stopped trying to include her, thinking that maybe she just liked to be left alone. so she just observes while she waits for a moment where she could help.
in front of the camera it raises questions and some people start questioning why horan was even part of the group when she is such an awkward mess, ruining the atmosphere on-stage by having no genuine expression and off-stage by by being too shy or too recluded.
it doesn't help that horan is very unimaginative. she couldn't come up with a concept, much less with lyrics or a dance routine. it's another aspect of losing her own identity that dooms her skills as merely reproductive. despite being a workaholic and sacrificing health and well-being for her dream, she fades into the background, doesn't fight for spotlight, lets herself be overlooked because she thinks it's what she deserves. just by looking her interact with others, you wouldn't believe that she cares much about her profession. moreover she lacks versatility for an idol as she is not comfortable with showing skin. she fails to cover up her discomfort completely which leds some people to believe that she has an unprofessional attitude.

the funny thing is, some people can't succeed at something no matter how much they try. nobody studied as much as horan but when the test results came out, she always ranked about average. even if she studied each day until the break of dawn, she'd still get mediocre results. her teachers knew and pitied her, her parents knew and encouraged her, her class mates knew and made fun of her for it. horan knew too, and it affected her confidence. she told herself, that she just hadn't worked hard enough yet. she had long accepted the fact that she was not as smart as others but she still clung on the hope that she could succeed by being more dedicated than anyone else. all of her parents friends seemed to have incredibly successfull children so she didn't want to be the only exception. to her, getting into medical school meant everything.
and then she graduated and took the university entrace exam. she had been studying for the entirety of her high school years for it and applied to the least competitive program on purpose, not to snu, the one her parents went to. however, when she received the results, she felt as if her entire world collapsed. in the back of her mind, there was always the fear that she'd fail. but she never imagined that she'd score that low, that she'd be in the bottom 10% of all test takers. she went home and couldn't stop crying. her parents didn't seem very surprised though. that evening, they told her quietly that maybe not everyone was meant to succeed, maybe she wasn't meant to take this path. they were the ones preaching that hard work would pay off and all those years they had witnessed her sacrificing everything when deep inside, they probably knew that it was futile. never in her life she felt so betrayed.

with enough practice, she learned how to be a passable rapper - she improved until she could match the rythm well, her pronounciation started to become good and she could project the necessary attitude into her verses. however, while it would perhaps be enough to debut under other companies as a lead (or, with minimum competition) even main rapper, she couldn't hold a candle next to big hits' famous bangtan rap line. ask her to write lyrics and she'd be lost - one of horan's biggest weaknesses is that she doesn't have much artistic ability which limits her as a musician. she tried a thousand times but even after hours of staring at the paper and googling for inspiration, the little she wrote at the end seemed to be nonsensical garbage. even a third grader would have done a better job.
her vocals are her pride. she's not the best one among the girls, has trouble belting notes powerfully and her vocal colour is not that outstanding, could never become part the groups' signature sound. but it fits her, bright and clear and high and feminine, and people have told her that it has a soothing quality, even though she doesn't quite know what they mean when they tell her that. her pitch and the technical aspects of her singing are proficient. she also is good at putting emotion into her singing, which is actually ironical considering her trouble with expressing it on her face.

to be honest, horan was not the kind of daughter her parents envisioned. she didn't have the same smarts as them, lacked confidence, leadership skills, everything they prided themselves in. nonetheless, she is their daughter and they love her no matter what, even though,,, yeah, they are a bit disappointed about the way she turned out. during her school years they thought that maybe she'd change someday and become better at memorizing but it never happened. her mom suggested the idol career path because horan did have a nice voice but after seeing her (lack of) progress, well..her parents were surprised that she made it into the group at all. and truthfully, they can't understand how horan hasn't fixed her bad habits yet - two years and she's still so bad at dancing? if she really tried, she would have been better by now.
meanwhile horan is still resentful that they were so strict to her and made her go to the hagwons til sundown despite probably realizing that her academical skills weren't good enough to compete for medicine.

they really haven't spoken more than a few sentences yet but oddly, there is something about horan that makes namjoon... root for her. it's not romantically motivated in the least but namjoon has found himself oddly drawn to the shy girl who always stands next to others but never participates in their conversations.

BIRTHNAME. i hinted at it the first time i turned in my app but now i say it for real - i view horan as aromantic/ace. horan hasn't really realized it herself - she knows that she has no interest in dating or kissing and the thought of it is grossing her out but she doesn't put her mind to find out why that is or what the nuances of uality/labels are. She never felt like she was missing out on something, at least so far. props to you for allowing wlw love interests though
