birthname shin raon
birthdate 30/12 + 17
birthplace baeju, south korea
hometown baeju, south korea
ethnicity korean

faceclaim jeon heejin
backup nancy mcdonie
appearance   for a so called 'nerd', raon is pretty, with soft brown eyes, somewhat exotic features ( she's told she looks almost foreign in a couple of pictures, but korean in some others ) and wavy brown hair. she's close to the short side, but she makes up for her petiteness by the bounce in her step and the bright grin on her face.

fashion sense   honestly, she just wears whatever is comfortable. common things you'd see her wearing are : oversized sweaters or hoodies ( her parents had left a couple of their clothes behind when they left and she'd taken to wearing those when she misses them ), denim shorts, sneakers or oversized shirts when it's warmer.

nicknames

△ raonnie, onnie : her general nicknames. it's used by the people in the search squad.

△ shin ramyun : a play on the girl's name that's generally used by the people at school. she still hasn't quite realized that the sole purpose of the nickname is to make fun of her, so she really doesn't mind if the rest of the group call her that as well. variations of the name are : ramyun, ramyunnie

△ homework machine : pretty self explanatory. people usually refer to raon as this behind her back, and it's kind of like her official title in school.

△ child : raon may not be the youngest of the group ( or she might be depending on the other applicants ) but with her childish nature she certainly seems like the youngest, so she'd earned herself this nickname from the other people in the search squad ( crew? group? team? idk )

shin raon

personality

intp - the logician, ravenclaw
positive. intelligent, curious, cheerful, playful, altruistic
neutral. blunt, sarcastic, childish, idealistic, prone to anxiety
negative. gullible, naive, reckless, never says no, overloads herself

a burst of giggles erupt from the corner of the cafeteria, and one of the girls smirks as she fixes her gaze onto a lone figure crouched over a textbook on the other end of the room. she nudges the girl next to her, nodding towards the figure. "see that girl over there? that's ramyunnie, the one i told you about this morning? our errand girl?"

the second girl shifts uncomfortably as she glances over to the familiar figure of her neighbor scribbling over a piece of paper, no doubt taking notes for one of her classmates or doing their homework or something else along the lines of that again. "she's the one everyone goes to when they want their homework done. she's possibly the smartest girl in the entire year, entire school, even, but poor nerd is so gullible you could tell her you're too busy and she'd do your work for you in a heartbeat."

"always partner up with her for group projects," another of her new friends adds, taking another bite of her salad. "you'll never have to do the work and you'll still be able to get amazing grades. it's a plus that she likes to think the best of everyone and everything, so even if you make her do all the work all the time she'll just think that it's because you have some personal issue to deal with."

the girl bites down on her lip, deciding that this wouldn't be a good time to mention that she didn't exactly like how they were taking advantage of raon's altruism to slack off.

she glances over at raon's table and tries to find traces of food between the books and notes she had sprawled all over the desk, but she couldn't find anything. reckless as always, she thinks to herself. i should get her something to eat next time

"you know, sometimes i wonder if she likes getting given work to do. she never complains, and she's always so happy about it when we ask her to do things for us." she isn't happy, she wanted to protest. she acts happy, but i know she isn't. she sends another worried look over at the mentioned girl, the sounds of raon crying in the middle of the night because the stress she's under to be perfect and the deadlines she has too meet were too much playing in her mind. she's sure that's only the least of what raon's going through, and there's so much more where those helpless sobs came from.

the other girls had already moved on with their conversation, but she couldn't help but keep looking over. from the past month or so she'd been raon's neighbor, she'd learned more about the girl than she thinks anyone else had gotten close to knowing.

raon was a ball of sunshine, constantly cheerful, bright smile never absent from her face. she was kind of like a child when you get to know her, fascinated by everything ( generally by new people, new information ), clingy, quite impulsive ( she'd been whacked over the head many times for being annoying but she deserved it so she wasn't complaining ) and brutally honest, but she was a good person underneath all the teasing and sarcastic comments and half-hearted insults about people's intelligence.

she didn't deserve this. didn't deserve to be used, didn't deserve to be treated as a machine by everyone else, as if she didn't have feelings, as if she could keep going without breaking. but there was nothing she could do about it, right?

background

shin raon was born on december 30th as the only child of shin byungcheol and jang younghee, two budding scientists unfortunately stuck in a small town where they didn't have the resources to do the things they wanted to do. but they were content with where they are, at least, for now they were happy with the equipment they had, confident they could make a breakthrough despite being a bit limited in the resource department.

the first memories raon had were in the lab with her parents, her mother patiently teaching her about biology while her father listened on, measuring out chemicals as she spoke ( her parents told her that her first word had been 'atom', and that they'd never been more proud ). she was a smart kid, always the first in class, always way ahead of the other kids ( especially in science, but what did you expect from a girl whose parents were scientists? she'd memorized the periodic table before she'd learned her multiplications properly ), and she had the potential to be great. when her parents realized her potential, they started signing her up for additional classes wherever possible. she no longer had time to spend helping her parents with their experiments, or hanging out with the few friends she'd made at school. her family dynamics had changed as well, as her parents' experiments started to fail, and little by little, her parents had started withdrawing themselves, shutting themselves in the lab in hopes of getting something, anything out of their experiments. within a couple of years, she was a hell of a lot smarter than she'd been before, but whenever she looked around at the loving families and the groups of friends messing around on the side of the street, she noticed that she'd never been so cut out from life as a whole as she was now. when she was 15 years old, her parents realized they couldn't do much here in baeju, and they'd moved to seoul.

but they hadn't brought her with them.

she remembers waiting and waiting until she fell asleep, and she remembers that when she had woken up, there were still no traces of her parents. she'd gone down to their lab ( now separate from their house ) and when she found a note apologizing for not bringing her along ( because they needed to save costs and classes in baeju were cheaper than classes in seoul ) and stating how they would still send her money every month, she'd broken down and cried for hours on end, because she realized that all this time apart had caused herself to not mean anything to them anymore. their experiments were first. not their daughter.

and nobody had even bothered to come ask her how she was doing herself. everyone had heard that the scientist couple had moved to seoul and left their only child alone in baeju ( baeju was a small place and gossip was bound to happen ), but everyone was so clouded by their hatred of the couple that betrayed their town for the city to even care about raon. but eventually she found a way to manage, and her new neighbors had been a lot of help ( having moved back to baeju from the city ), but she couldn't shake the feeling that she meant nothing to nobody.

maybe that's why she started doing other people's homework, or writing their essays, or taking time to tutor them. because she was scared that if she didn't do anything, everyone would forget about her and abandon her just like her parents had.

trivia

- food : she's gotten so used to not eating that when she actually gets the time to eat, she either only eats a little bit or she chooses to not eat at all because she's honestly not hungry.

- anxiety and panic attacks : raon has problems with anxiety from the amount of pressure she's  constantly under, and now she feels like whenever she gets the chance to rest, she's wasting her time, which makes her panic. she doesn't like breaking down in front of people, so she'll usually force a smile, then excuse herself to go to the toilet and panic in there.

- cleanliness : sure her notes are neat, but she isn't the neatest person out there. not when she has essays from three different year groups to write, at least six bits of homework, multiple notes on several different units and one lab report all due in the next two days. even when she doesn't have work ( it's a rare occasion, but it happens ), because she doesn't really have the habit of cleaning up, her house is generally really messy. she's clean physically, though.

- handwriting : she's good at copying handwriting ( comes from years of doing other people's homework ) and it's now a form of entertainment for her ( watch her ask everyone on the search team to write down the alphabet and proceed to replicate entire essays in each person's handwriting on a long trip )

- english : she started learning english because she needed a new challenge ( ie  advanced calculus was getting easy for her at age 14 and she needed something else to learn )

- skinship : she's a very clingy person if you're a good friend of hers. expect hugs, backhugs, hand-holding ( generally if she's nervous or starting to get anxious ) and playfighting, among others. she might just seem like a clingy person for no reason, but really she's clingy because she doesn't get much love from her parents, or from anyone, really

- sleep : she can survive on virtually no sleep ( well she can't, but coffee basically runs in her veins so she can survive so long as she has coffee ) so chances are, if you're awake at night, she'll be too

- banters : if you're close with her, she won't hesitate to knock your ego down a bit or point out your flaws ( as a joke, of course ). it's her way of showing affection other than clinging onto you 24/7, which she realizes not everyone appreciates

- singing : she loves singing, but she would rather die than sing in front of people ( it would be so funny for someone to just walk in on her belting out some ballad and her not noticing she turns around and sees them filming for blackmail material )

- friends : she likes to consider everyone her friends, but really, there are so many people out there just to use her to get stuff done and she just doesn't know because blind faith is a thing

- parents : her parents don't know she's on the trip, and honestly, neither do they care about it. they haven't checked up on her in two years and she thinks they won't be checking up on her anytime soon.

- hyung : she likes calling the guys 'hyung' instead of 'oppa'. she still refers to older girls as 'unnie' though.

snippets of conversations with shin raon :

- "well statistically speaki—" "nobody wants to hear about statistics, raonnie." "oh, i'm sorry. i'll just shut up then."

- "did you know giraffes have no vocal cords?"

- "a little help here please?" "didn't we learn this back in, like, fifth grade? it's like, basi—" "i'm going to stop you right there."

- "wait, so i just have one question. who's okay with spending the night in jail? because if not, then we probably shouldn't do that."

- "did you know that the fingerprints of koalas are really similar to the fingerprints of humans??"

"hey uh raon?" "which subject? when's it due?" "that's not what i came here for." "it's not?"

- "my name's hyunsoo, i'm sooo emo ( wink wink )"

- "i call shotgun!!"

- "no, my parents didn't name me after ramyun. at least, i don't think so."

- "fluorine uranium carbon potassium." "what?" ". i said ."

"i'm literally dying." "actually, you're not literally dying because that would mean you're physically dying but you're not." "...it's a figure of speech."

"stop poking me." "stop being so boring then."

- "oooh, someone has a crus—ow! why'd you hit me?"

- "did you know—" "we get it, raon."

( while texting ) "hey, r u here yet??" "you mean, 'are you here yet?', right?"

"raon! we didn't come here to stare at lab equipment!" "sorry!!"

"i...never mind, it's not important."

relationships

( all of the following are at the start of the story and are subject to change )

parents, shin byungcheol and jang younghee : 46 and 45 : scientists : 2
she loves her parents, she really does, but they've grown apart so much after so long that she really doesn't know if she can call them her parents anymore. she's always hopeful that one day they might come back for her, but right now, that doesn't really seem to be the case. she tries to contact them, but she guesses they're so busy they don't have the time to reply.

neighbor, min eunbi : 18 : student ( senior ) : 7
eunbi is like an older sister to raon. they'd gotten close after eunbi moved next door and raon had gone to welcome the new neighbors, especially since she knew they were from the city, and that it would be useful for them to have at least one friendly face in the neighborhood. eunbi's kind of like a sister to raon, and though she still doesn't know that raon's parents aren't exactly, well, here in baeju, she notices the neglect that raon feels, and often tries to make up for it by inviting her over whenever she can.

acquaintance, seo hyunsoo : 18 : student ( senior ) : 2
she'd only heard about hyunsoo before he put out the survey to form the search squad, and to be quite honest, she'd been a bit curious about him. after all, saeho had talked about this 'not emo, but definitely call him emo just to annoy him when you meet him' hyunsoo too much for her to not be interested in some way.

( oh my gosh this is so empty but she's a bit of a loner anyway, so yeah )

BACKGROUND

i.     the first time saeho had heard of raon, he'd been told that the girl was an academic genius, and so he'd decided to take her into his class. after a few months of teaching her, he'd realized that though she was never late, though she was always in class, though she got good test scores, she never really seemed to be paying much attention in class. she always seemed to have a stack of papers on her desk, she always seemed eternally tired, and whenever she thought he wasn't looking, she would turn to working on the papers. he hadn't thought much about it at first, but then he started wondering if something was wrong.

ii.    the first time saeho saw raon outside of class she was bent over another stack of papers, and he couldn't help but wonder why she always had that much homework to do. that was when he noticed a group of girls heading in raon's direction, and raon handing them each a smaller stack of papers before the group walked off. the girl didn't notice them laughing and joking about her as they walked away, but saeho sure heard the comments about how easy she was to fool into doing errands and how they planned on using her naivety to their advantage for the rest of the year. that's when he found out the truth behind those papers.

from then on, he would stay close to her table when he was on lunch duty to make sure none of the other students were bothering her. she had no idea, of course, being the oblivious person she was, but she did notice how on certain days, less people would come to her than others. during this time, saeho also found out how she generally didn't have the time to eat, and made mental notes to remind her about her health the next time they had classes.

iii.    "raon? can you stay after class for a bit?" he asks softly. the girl freezes visibly, and he could almost see the insecurity running through her head as the class turns to stare at her. he keeps quiet, not really knowing what to say.

like he'd asked, she stays after class finishes, and saeho sends her a concerned look when she opens to talk. "did i do something wrong? were my test scores bad? did i miss any assignments? are you kicking me out of the class? did i—"

"you didn't do anything wrong," he quickly interrupts. she relaxes, and his frown deepens after hearing her reaction. "i've seen you around school, and i'm a bit worried that you're not taking care of yourself well. if this keeps going on, i may have to tell your parents." raon looks surprised for a second, and saeho's eyebrows knit in confusion. "did i say something?"

the girl snaps out of her initial surprise and shakes her head. "no, no. nothing's wrong."

"well if anything happens you can come talk to me, okay? i know i'm a teacher and i'm supposed to be scary and all that but..."

she flashes him a soft smile, and he grins back at her, knowing she'd understood the point he'd been trying to get across.

iv.     he doesn't hear back from raon for a couple of weeks, but one day he finds raon breaking down outside his classroom, and he brings her in after confirming he didn't have another class next. it takes her about an hour to calm down, and then the bell rings and she has to leave, but he makes sure one of the other students is keeping an eye on her to make sure she's okay. it takes another few days before raon comes back to apologize for wasting so much of his time, and he quickly reassures her that he wasn't angry at her. he didn't push her for an explanation, but a couple months later, she comes back and spills everything, about the stress, about the pressure to be perfect, and about her parents as well.

INTERActions

"you don't have to be so formal around me." "can i call you hyung then???" "but you're a girl?" "so??? oppa's so overrated."

- raon kind of sees saeho as an older brother, and if you asked him, he would say that he saw raon as his baby sister as well

- they greet each other whenever they run into each other at school, and occasionally she slips and calls him 'saeho hyung' in front of her classmates, which just gets them a couple of weird looks.

- raon always goes to saeho whenever she's too anxious or on the verge of breaking down, because he's the only one she trusts to not judge her for it or tell her to stop being so dramatic ( that happened once, and since then she'd tried to control it in front of people, which makes it even worse when she's alone and finally gets to let everything out )

- saeho still tries to stay where he can see her during lunch duty just so he can chase away anyone asking her to run errands for them or anything

- saeho's trying to get raon to stand up for herself more. it's not going very well, but at least they're both trying

- she gets kind of mad when she hears the rumors about saeho and hyunsoo around school, because saeho had already told her he and hyunsoo weren't dating, but she hasn't done anything about it because she knows saeho wouldn't like her getting in trouble over something that doesn't even involve her

- in class, saeho is much more lenient on deadlines when it comes to her because he knows how hard she's trying to meet everyone's deadlines, and it's pretty much unavoidable that she would miss a couple of her own deadlines as well

- out of class he likes to discuss his vision of what baeju could be like with her to distract her from her workload, and it works

- her anxiety has gotten much worse without saeho, but she realizes she can't be selfish and hold him back from where he wants to go. she just hopes that he's safe.

WHAT DO YOU THINK HAPPENED To mr kim? did he elope? alien abduction? tell me your theory.

raon purses her lips, thinking for a while before bringing her fingers to the keyboard, typing out what she thought was the safest option to write. "i'll be honest, i think mr kim got tired of this place. he kept trying to make a difference but nobody would listen to him, you know? and maybe he thought there was no point of trying and just left."

did you even know kim saeho? was he your teacher, or did you just see him around? what are your feelings towards him and his contribution to bhs?

"mr kim was my teacher," she types slowly. "he was one of the only teachers who truly cared about his students as a person." she deletes the 'he was the only one i could truly be myself around' that came after, deciding that that was something she'd rather not share.

where do you think he went? somewhere near, somewhere far?

"i don't know. i honestly don't know." she hesitates for a while, staring down at the screen before deleting the comment. "i think he went somewhere his opinions would be accepted. seoul maybe? i'm not sure."

be frank with me — do you think we'll ever get him back?

no, she thinks to herself without hesitation. if he chose to leave by himself, the possibility of him wanting to come back is close to zero, and if he was taken, the chance of us getting him back would be even less than that. and that's assuming we can even find him. that's assuming he's even in korea. that's assuming he's still safe. even so, the girl's fingers move to type in a short 'yes' in the box under the question. whoever sent out the survey obviously needed to hear a yes, and even if it's just her, the more she says it, the more everyone who cared about mr kim would believe it. right?

"he cared. that's all that matters."

alias rin

last words oh my gosh this is such a mess of an app but it's late and i'll try to fix as much as i can later on. the personality section is kind of bad but i hope you can get more of her personality from the trivia section? idk

scene request

- have them following a lead they're absolutely sure will lead them to saeho but it turns out to be a red herring
- let raon have more friends haha ( maybe a love interest owo )
- putting in one of the conversation snippets from the trivia section?
- if they do go to seoul, maybe she might run into her parents but they don't notice she's there
- it would be absolutely hilarious if the hotel they were planning to stay at in one of the places was fully booked so they kind of all just camped out at the side of the street
- raon being the child she is and begging to stop at every ice cream shop they pass
- late night conversations with one ( or more ) of the group, complete with raon rambling on about the constellations they could see
- if they ever go to a high tech place, the rest of the group practically has to drag her away from the technology
