✑ RHIANNON ( 리애넌 ) when she first debuted, this was jimin's stage name. there some reasoning behind it; it's a welsh name meaning "great queen," she first discovered it in a book she read for a class, and she's heard fleetwood mac a few times. pretentious? maybe so. although jimin changed her stage name after moving to blockberry creative, it lives on; any song she works on, she's credited as "rhiannon."

stage name : gemma ( 제마 ), formerly rhiannon

an italian name meaning "gemstone." she wasn't planning to change her stage name, but bbc suggested an easy-to-pronounce name for a wider audience. like her previous stage name, it is inspired by a literary character, this time from the gadfly.

star history :

✑ a few months before jimin graduated from high school, her parents agreed to let her start up her music career. they got her in contact with sundial records, a friend of a friend's boss. there, and in college, she could start to hone her songwriting and composition skills. so, armed with a guitar and piano, she began with indie, the genre she was most familiar with and that which sundial was mostly known for. her debut single was met with a lukewarm response; it was impressive that, at just 17, jimin was writing her own music and lyrics, but "time lapse" was criticized for being too plain, forgettable.

so she evolved her style. there were hits and misses, but things started clicking into place in 2014, and people could tell. instead of brushing her off as a teenage girl writing angsty lyrics, she was applauded for finding her own sound. she was moving toward bigger things.

in april of 2015, her contract with sundial ended, and she was met with a few companies asking her to join them; she decided to focus on school, but would get back to them. in the meantime, she did some songwriting and composition on the side. it in this period of time, she met the people behind monotree, and dean, whom she later released a song with. monotree introduced her to bbc. the company initially wanted to sign her as an in-house producer, but with her graduation just around the corner, jimin knew she would quickly grow bored, and requested she be signed as an artist as well. after a bit of back-and-forth, the ceo agreed, and she was signed in early 2016. loona was actually the biggest factor in jimin's decision; she wanted to be involved in the process of creating such an ambitious group. she never had say in who the members would be, of course, but made music that best fit each individual member.

even today, her own music isn't very popular, and most of her income consists of royalties from songs she's written for other artists.

✑ INDIE ARTIST TO JOIN BIGHIT? — for a brief moment, this had some truth to it, but the media was far too late to catch it. bang shihyuk is a family friend, and it seemed appropriate at the time to sign with someone familiar. but, due to creative differences, jimin decided to sign with an indie company instead and ended up at sundial. this story was brought up by an "industry insider" around the time jimin started negotiating with bbc. jimin and bang shihyuk both denied this, and the story mostly went away, though some people are still convinced jimin will, at some point after her contract with bbc ends, go to bighit, as she has expressed vague interest in working with bts.

✑ SOLO ARTIST GEMMA IGNORES FANS? — a misleading allkpop article. jimin isn't quite used to "fame" yet, but there was a time when someone could approach her and ask for autographs and take pictures, and she would graciously do so. but after being recognized from the instagram posts of her celebrity friends, approached by random people who just want pictures with famous people, and one too many instances of being followed by overzealous fans (nothing dangerous necessarily, they just took pictures from a distance instead of going up to talk to her), jimin now politely declines, saying they can always do so at a fan event (which she has now, and doesn't know how to feel about that). the allkpop article, however, cites an incident when a fan called out to her to say hi, but jimin had earbuds in and couldn't hear them. said fan was too shy to tap her on the shoulder, and thus the article was born. this is, so far, this is the only scandal she's had, aside from a tiny forum post insinuating that she was a lesbian.

"gemma? what an interesting name." jimin straightens up. perhaps this interview wouldn't be so novel after all. "we'll have to hear that story some time."

she clamps shut. for a split second, her practiced smile falters, "… right. perhaps it will happen during the show?"

HOW OR WHY DID YOU GET CHOSEN FROM YOUR AGENCY :

✑ my 'concept' for the past year has been to be 'mysterious,' and that's gone as well as one can expect. "i have little experience with being on television. almost none, really, with the exception of music shows. up until recently, my public exposure has been through concerts and online and magazine interviews, and i have yet to be on a reality or variety show. so, my company and i decided it was time to show a different side of myself—err, gemma, i mean, to the public." she winces. referring to herself in the first person, especially with this new stage name... it was disconcerting. almost like she really was talking about a different person.

"well, between you and me, people are always interested in producer-dols." her interviewer says.

jimin hesitates, a breathy laugh escaping her lips. was she really an 'idol?' "i suppose that could be why… but it's such an arrogant thing to say!"

WHAT WERE YOUR REACTIONS WHEN YOU LEARNT YOU'D JOIN THE SHOW :

✑ "it's... certainly a change of pace. i feel a bit anxious about the whole thing." jimin says quietly, "but, i am excited to meet new people." more than anything, i was surprised they would even allow me on the show. she adds to herself.

AS A CELEBRITY, WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON DATING AND LOVE :

✑ "i do always try to be candid, but the truth is that i am quite private with my love life, and have certain expectations about that privacy being respected." she begins, barely taking a breath, "personally, i haven't had any 'issue' with others trying to interpose, but i know it has happened to other people in the past, and it sounds dreadful. a celebrity has just as much right to being in a relationship as anyone else." jimin wants to go on, to talk about the whole concept of staying single just to please fans, but she knows no good will come out of it.
