The League of Extraordinaire : Jake Nam : Power Replication

NAM

Jacob

NICKNAMES:

✧ Jake - no one who knows him by his English name calls him by Jacob, only Jake
✧ Jiwoo - Jake's Korean name that the non-foreigner Incheon students and his relatives from Incheon call him by
✧ Ahjussi - he's one of the oldest students in the school, finding out about his powers only after the first attack that sent the school in northern Europe falling

LANGUAGE SPOKEN:

✧ English - he's lived in New York almost all his life, he's definitely fluent in the language but got a bit rusty after moving to Incheon; 9/10
✧ Korean - often during his vacation, he would visit Incheon. His relatives there would talk to him with limited English so he had to learn Korean himself. Now that he's living with them, about four years now, he's learning a lot; 7/10 (he still sounds dumb most of the time ngl)

APPEARANCE:

✧ With dark, unruly hair, Jake constantly looks like he just got out of bed. Being almost 180 cm tall, he is taller than most of the students, which enables him to intimidate another student in an instant if he were to approach them. His brown eyes offers either an uninterested glance or an intimidating stare, depending on how you look at it.
✧ "A buddy of mine saw Jake Nam take off his shirt in the shower and he said that Jake Nam had an eight-pack—that Jake Nam was shredded." — Jake Nam disguised as another student (via a borrowed shapeshifting ability) spreading not totally false rumors about himself

FASHION:

✧ The moment he steps into the room, you know that he is cool. Is it his denim jacket? His simple but sleek fashion sense? Or is it just because he wears a lot of foreign brands (and looks good in them)? Jake prefers anything casual and doesn't dwell on the specifics. It's probably magic just pure coincidence that makes it work.

Jake can replicate others' abilities after their powers have been used on him, or physical contact was made (albeit it will have a weaker effect). Multiple powers can be stacked.

PERSONALITY TRAITS:

✧ manipulative (intimidating, a pacifist, selfless, chill, humorous, excitable, dumbs himself down)
✧ hiding in a façade
✧ stubborn
✧ obnoxious
✧ childish
✧ perceptive
✧ patient
✧ charismatic
✧ he's lying most of the time so you shouldn't let your guard down

PERSONALITY:

To strangers, Jake is an intimidating individual. He always stares in a way that makes even the strongest student flinch. If he had to name an ability other than his power, it would definitely be 'bluffing'. Why? Because most of the opinion others have on him are based on what he wanted them to see him as. If he wanted them scared, he'd act all intimidating and sh*t. He can also make them pity him just by body language and a few words. Using his keen perception on people, he would tailor his actions and words for it to have the maximum effect.

After transferring, Jake wanted the students in the sanctuary to see him as someone who is scary, or at least isn't easily intimidated, so that they wouldn't approach him. If he showed any bit of weakness, they had a possibility of bothering him—or worse, bullying him. He's not unfamiliar to being bullied at all, he's actually quite used to it especially in the past, but as a person who just got a power that he doesn't know how to control well, a confrontation against a person who had been training their power for most of their life would be troublesome in the least. And Jake wouldn't want no trouble.

To his friends, Jake is a very laid-back person who's often joking around. He's not at all intimidating like the façade he puts up in the sanctuary to avoid unnecessary run-ins with the other students. Similarly, he's still a bit of a control-freak even with his friends (not by controlling them in a literal sense but controlling their perception of Jake). He doesn't show the real him but rather, a person who is funny, a peacemaker, a bit dumb and excitable, and kind of altruistic. He often discourages fights and helps friends as much as he can, just to keep that façade going. Jake would even go as far as hiding his powers and mentioning a useless ability such as Healing Tears (a difficult ability to prove because one would need to be actually crying of sympathy and Jake doesn't even cry much) so that they wouldn't put their guard up when they're with him.

Take off the complex façade and what's left is a boy who has tried so hard to cope up and adapt to the people around him just so that he wouldn't be able to get hurt again. And truthfully, hiding parts of your personality is a difficult thing to do already and Jake is here hiding his whole personality—his own self, even. Basically, he's too stubborn to accept that the smiles he shares with friends are sometimes real and that most of the time, he's just as dorky as he is with friends as he is deep-down. This doesn't stop him from being obnoxious on purpose, though. Like eating with his mouth full to annoy people.

tl;dr jake pretends that he's strong to strangers so they don't bother him, jake lies to his friends that he's not strong so that they'll get their guard down, jake lies to everyone tbh but most often 2 himself 🐍🐍

BACKGROUND:

Jake grew up in New York with his mom. His mom and dad (both Korean) were divorced, and being a child with no powers, he didn't go to any special schools. However, due to his lanky stature, he was often bullied by kids who were taller and bigger than him. He endured swirlies and wedgies, opting to never fight back. His mom enrolled him to a Taekwondo class but he didn't go through with it because he was still getting bullied even in there.

When he went to college, no one bothered him as much and he continued his studies, aspiring to become a lawyer. During his free time, he tried to learn Taekwondo again. This time, no one bullied him and he started to build up his confidence and his body. At 21, He met April in the Taekwondo classes he attended and they got along well. They had similar interests and he fully enjoyed the banter they had. Not long after, they got together as a couple.

Fast-forward to four years later, everything all went downhill when his mother's business turned out to be a pyramid scheme and she was arrested and imprisoned soon after. After his mom went to prison, April broke up with him. Fortunately, Jake didn't inherit the debt his mom incurred (but was forced to pay the debt with their house and other property). And luckily, he had already finished studying his pre-law course which was a degree in Philosophy. With a degree on anything, he could finally get a job even if it wasn't the job he intended to do.

With nothing else to lose, at 25, he booked a flight to South Korea with the rest of the savings he had—supposedly for his graduate studies. Jake decided to move permanently in Incheon where his mother's relatives resided. They knew about his mom's imprisonment, of course. They talked about bad things about her in front of Jake but thankfully, they didn't put any blame on him.

Jake continued to practice his Taekwondo skills. He also found out a new sport he could practice and use for self-defense, boxing, and sparred almost daily with his cousin, Kwanghee. He took on a job as a call-center agent, working graveyard shifts, because of his ability to speak English well. It wasn't much, but it helped pay the bills.

For almost 30 years of his life, he had no powers. But Jake didn't need them to defend himself. He's got his self-defense skills to back him up, and his charismatic demeanor and slick sense. He never needed powers, and never wished for them. So, it came as a really big surprise to him when a huge wave of water hit Jake in the face when he and Kwanghee were fishing. Kwanghee laughed at him, of course. He tried to splash some water onto her. Due to his watery vision because of the previous water splash, he missed—but it still hit her. They soon noticed that he could bend the water to his will.

Kwanghee got super excited and since she looked up to people with superpowers, she even knew about The League. She knew about the nearest sanctuary they had, but it was in China. And honestly speaking, they had no money for it. Before his mother got imprisoned, Jake could come and go as much as he wished, but in this state of money-less-ness, he was to stay in South Korea. He then found out that he could no longer bend water, and thought that his 'power' was just a fluke.

News of the sanctuaries being attacked alerted Kwanghee and she looked out for major updates about it. She got especially bewildered about a sanctuary being in Incheon. (She literally just saw people getting evacuated there and just assumed). Of all places, why was it in their region? In a supposed hotel to boot Jake told her multiple times that he doesn't have powers, but Kwanghee had really just wanted to go to a sanctuary to see people with powers. Kwanghee exclaimed, "We'll get you checked, bro!" Jake sighed.

With Jake 100% ready to get embarrassed, they went to the school and talked to the staff. They got scheduled an appointment later that afternoon, there were still a lot of students to relocate to the sanctuary and these two kids already knew of their place—applying here even?! Jake was nervous but, as expected, it didn't show on his face. They had to wait a couple of hours so they took a walk in the vicinity. There was this student who wanted to hit on (flirt with) Kwanghee but Jake got protective. The teenager punched Jake but he managed to block it, and with a jab, Jake sent the kid flying.

Wondering what the h*ll happened, he got into the interview still a bit flabbergasted. Jake was bluffing his way throughout, but just to test a theory he had, Jake said that he had "super strength"—the superpower that he surprisingly demonstrated just a few hours before. And it actually worked. He only found out about his actual ability after coming to the sanctuary.

TRIVIA:

✧ Jake likes fast food, and colorful lemonade.
✧ He also likes colorful booze, and can appreciate it because he has a high alcohol tolerance.
✧ He's ambidextrous. Jake was originally left-handed but got made fun of because of it.
✧ Probably one of the few '89-liners training in the Incheon sanctuary.
✧ He's a tough cookie (doesn't cry much) but has a soft spot for animals.
✧ Jake has low pain tolerance but is able to hide it even if something really hurts.
✧ Hates boring people. Although, 'boring' is subjective. He's fond of people who can be passionate about something they like.
✧ He likes practical jokes and pranking people. He's very obnoxious, in every sense of the word.
✧ Jake still has all his clothes from New York. He treasures them 'cause they're all expensive—it's the only memories he has left of his luxurious lifestyle.

✧ Jake thinks that it's a blessing that he didn't get his powers earlier, because knowing himself he would have just used it to teach his bullies a lesson. And without much practice, it could've ended pretty badly—maybe even with his life on the line.
✧ He doesn't really use his powers unless faced with a very life-threatening situation.
✧ Despite accidentally making his powers work everytime for like, five times, Jake still has a lot to learn.

RELATIONSHIPS:

*most of his relationships don't feel 'real' to him, even his relationship with his ex-girlfriend, the only exception is his cousin really (...and if he gets a love interest, jake might yield)

 ✧ Mother - Heesun "Hera" Park (48) ✧ Imprisoned; Former Con-artist ✧ sly, confident, determined ✧ 5
✧ "I took care of all of Jake's needs while growing up, so I don't know why he's grown so distant. Maybe it's because I was too into my job that we never go to talk much."

 ✧ Ex-girl - April Juniper Paige (27) ✧ Barista ✧ cynical, independent, obstinate ✧ from 11 to -100 real quicc
✧ "I don't remember him at all. What's his name again? Mandrake?" It turns out that they had just as much differences as similarities, and those differences surfaced after Jake's mom got imprisoned.

 ✧ Cousin - Park Kwanghee (21) ✧ Looking for a job ✧ curious, snarky, playful ✧ 9
✧ "Oh, Jiwoo. We're actually reaaaally close. And I really doubt that you can find another person who can  as much as I do. I mean he's kind of a pushover at times but he's real nice."

POWER replication

illusion manipulation

What is your power? Are there any limitations?

✧ "I looked it up, and it's called... Power Replication," Jake replied. For a moment, he thought about lying to the school representatives but that could result in some pretty big repercussions. "I haven't tried it out much, actually. So, I can't tell you about it that much. Buuut during my stay here, I managed to copy two powers at the same time! I was invisible then, while I levitated that slice of pepperoni pizza into my mouth. It. Was. Awesome."

From -avarice, because Jake is a lil' sh*t:

Power Replication is the ability to copy the powers of others after said power is used on them or, to a lesser degree (the power is weaker), if anyone with an ability made physical contact with the user. The users can even stack several powers together, which may lead to Power Mixture—the ability to merge separate powers into a single whole and combine/merge powers to create combos or even to create a new force.

The user has, at most, until they are drained (or pass out) for the copied powers to disappear. Therefore, a strong stamina can be trained as it is useful for elongating the time period the user can retain the copied powers. Power Replication has a limited amount of powers to be copied at a time*, but can be trained to stack more.

*Right now, Jake can only handle three at a time.

When did you find out about them? What happened?

✧ "I found it completely by accident. Actually, the day I first saw the sanctuary, that was when I first found out about my powers. You see, my niece thought she had powers, turns out... I was the one who had it."*
*not completely true

How did PEOPLE react when you found out [your powers], like your family or friends?

✧ "Out of all my friends and relatives, only Kwanghee knows about it. She was awed, of course. There isn't anyone in our family with anything like this. Maybe it came from my father's side?"

How are you handling it?

✧ "Well, with my hands..." Silence. No one was amused by his obscure joke. "Kidding. You know, powers are like lovers. You can't let them control your life, and you shouldn't depend on them too much. You don't know when they'll disappear from your life so you gotta be on your guard at all time."

ANY MALE OR FEMALE APPLICANT

ABOUT:

✧ He's actually very skeptical about finding another partner when the first one was a failed attempt at trying to open up, and ended up with losing the person he trusted the most. So why is this open to anyone? It's because I believe that anyone with a will strong enough and a love for Jake greater than the sun's magnetic field can do it! ✊
