▸ ARMOUR : KWON EUNBYUL THE MOTHER
Personality eunbyul is a girl with an open mind and a big heart — she's the type to help old ladies cross the road and accept you for who you are. she's also very charming in the way that she can get people wrapped around her finger but she's very humble. as the leader, she's very mature, dependable and responsible. she's there to chastise them when they do something wrong, encourages them to pursuse their dreams, looks out for every member, engages in group talks and exercises, and talks to the company on behalf of the group if someone's health is jeopardized.
she's very hardworking to the point she'll be very exhausted and is a huge perfectionist too. shs very confident of herself and knows her worth and her good features but she's also overcritical that she sees her flaws and weaknesses. she's self-pressure to the pint where she mentally beats herself up for every little mistake and. eunbyul's sensitive too and wears her heart on her sleeve.
she's an ambivert, which means she's a mixture of an introvert and an extrovert. she's very observant and intuitive and can spot a problem a mile away. she's also very artistic and loves drawing, fashion designing and composing songs. eunbyul's very loyal and will go with you to the moon and back if she cares about you.
eunbyul's very patient but don't make her pissed at you. as a result of bullying, she ends up nurses a huge grudge and being vindictive because she was never able to help herself those times, so she kinda makes up for it now. as a result of it also, she tends to keep to herself and keeps her feelings bottled up.
background eunbyul and her twin brother jihun were born to a loving family — a mother with a hard voice but with the sun in her smile and a father as calm and flexible as flowing water. four years later and eunbi was born and jiwoo arrived two years after her. haeran and myungsoo weren't perfect parents — haeran could be too stubborn and her words could cut like a knife and myungsoo was too passive at times and never liked showing affection through physical means — but they loved their children with all they had.
the family were upper middle-class in terms of wealth. they had enough money for themselves and their four children — jiwoo with his jewel-bright eyes and love of pranks, eunbi with her gentle words and ink stains on her hands, jihun with laughter that could brighten the world and easygoing nature, and eunbyul with stars in her eyes and melodies on her lips — and then a sizable excess which they would save (for their children, always for their children). the kids weren't the most popular in school but they weren't outsiders, either. despite being of a different enthnicity, the children had many friends. jiwoo was friendly and charming, eunbi was an intellectual and adored photography, jihun won over people with a roguish grin and his love of sports, and eunbyul was great at the arts and music. the kids were also close to their own siblings too — especially eunbyul with her mothering nature.
eunbyul adored music, especially singing and dancing. when she was 7, she wanted to be a singer and begged her parents to allow her to have lessons. her mother didn't want to but her father convinced her.
("she needs to concentrate on her studies. how can she expect to find a good job as a singer of all things?"
"i't just a phase, yeobo. let eunbyul do what she wants okay? besides, multitalented people are what employers want these days."
"... fine but as long as she doesn't let her grades slip."
myungsoo knew though, that this wasn't just a phase. his daughter finally found her passion, her heart. she was going to be a singer, he could feel it. she wasn't meant for a 9 to 5 job and office work. no, his eldest child was meant for the stage, spotlight shining, all eyes on her, singing her heart out. his wife would just have to accept that in the future.)
eunbyul was overjoyed and threw herself into her singing lessons and keeping her grades up. her teachers praised her work ethic and natural talent but she never let it go to her head. 3 years later, she added dancing to her lessons (after, once again, her faher convinced her mother). while she was doing this, she took care of her siblings whenever her mother decided to go overtime (which was often, with being the workaholic that she was).
when she was 12, her family moved to seoul, south korea because her mother got a better job offer. everything was strange for her — the culture, the traditions, the social heirarchy. her new classmate weren't as accepting too and her twin was in another class.
truthfully, in London, she wasn't considered fat at all. eunbyul's body was just different from all the size 0-2 girls she would see — she was thin but already had the semblance of the bountiful assets she would be known for in the future. she was bullied in school, many calling her names like fat and ugly and pig.
("did you see the new girl?"
"yeah. she's so weird, always keeping to herself."
"she's pretty fat too."
"haha yeah. what a pig."
"it's a pity since she has a beautiful face."
"such a waste.")
with the bullying and adjusting to a diffeErnt place, eunbyul spiraled into depression. he thoughts went darker and darker. she self-harmed by starving herself, eating only little. the worst part was that her parents and her siblings were adjusting too, so they didn't see her pain. she felt like she was drowning in an ocean of insults and not-good-enoughs and uselessness. the only light in her life was her vocal and dance lessons and taking care of her siblings.
two whole years of that happened, before she tried to commit suicide by overosing on sleeping pills. her twin found her and was just in time to get her to the hospital. she survived.
(she wanted to live but the pain hurt too much.)
it was a hard time. haeran and myungsoo were crushed, asking why they didn't see what was happening to their firstborn. why did they ignore the signs? her siblings felt like they were ungrateful brats — their sister had always, always been there for them. she was practically like a second mom to them. why?
things started to get better when they went to family therapy, since eunbyul didn't want to do it alone. when it was revealed that the reason their daughter almost died was because of bullying, they sued the school and transferred eunbyul to another one. the more they went to therapy, the more the family felt that they were becoming closer than before.
the new school was great, so very different than her previous one. othey were more tolerating and accepting than her previous one. here she found her best friend, kim namjoon, mr. top 1% and y brain man. behind that intelligence was a man meant for music and a huge dork. they got along well and hung out together. they also found out their mothers were friends friends back in high school but lost contact. they arranged a meeting with their moms and both women were overwhelmed with joy.
eunbyul felt that things were finally looking up and decided it was time for her to heal. she stopped starving herself and realized she was beautiful either way. she gained confidence and started to love herself.
six months later, her life had completely turned around: she has a closer relationship with her family, an amazing and dorky best friend, her body started filling out again, she started volunteering and doing charity work and she loves herself. sure, her demons sometimes come back and the depression tries to creep in at times, but she can handle them now. her life was great.
when she was 15 years old, 5 months before her 16th birthday, she started getting into idol music. sure, she knew what idols were since many girls in her school were into idol groups but she never really cared much. she was too busy concentrating on trying to be a singer. besides, she preferred supporting namjoon in the underground. but then she heard "hurricane venus" by boa and she got hooked. she started researching more and more and fell into the deep hole that is kpop.
she decided then that she wanted to be an idol — she knew it would be hard, that the life of glamor wouldn't be all that, that sasaeng fans would probably cause her to tear her hair out, but she wanted this. she loved how idols became role models, how they helped people through depression and anxiety and the like. helping others and doing her passions at the same time? that was the deal breaker for her.
("Joonie, i'm going to audition to be an idol."
"that's a nice joke."
"kim namjoon."
...
"oh! you're not joking."
...
"if that's what you want, byulie, then do it. i won't stop you. you deserve to be happy and if being an idol gives you that, i won't judge."
"I'm not buying that. you're too much of an underground rapper to not judge even a bit."
"okay, okay, maybe i'll judge a little bit but you're my best friend and i support you. i always will."
eunbyul later laughed herself sick when namjoon told her bangtan sonyeondan, his supposed to be rap duo/group — the details kept on changing —, would be an idol group. he threw a pillow at her face.)
eunbyul told her parents and, predictably, her mother disagreed while her father was all for it. however, she was allowed to audition because her mother feared it would cause a relapse in her daughter's mental health. eunbyul searched for a company and eventually found eclipse media — eunbyul didn't want a big company like the big 3. being in the big 3 meant pressure and a lot of expectations. she wanted a little-known one and so picked eclipse media. and so, at the age of 16, she became a trainee in eclipse media.
after a few of her mother's attempts to get her to change her mind, she ended up confronting her. why couldn't her mother see that she was happy? her mother's reason was startling, to say the least.
("byulie... i once dreamed of being a singer too. i trained really hard for it. i didn't eat food that would endanger my vocal chords. i signed up for an agency. but i never debuted."
"umma..."
"that hopelessness, that crushing despair, that feeling of knowing all your efforts were in vain... i don't want you to feel that."
"... i know umma. but this makes me happy. i'm happy, really happy."
"i know too. i saw your happiness but fear made me think otherwise... maybe it's time i let go of the past. go, live your dream. it would take me a while to adjust, but i'll support you.")

Trainee years six years
Trainee life eunbyul had a couple friends, but she entered the company at the time it was hard to make friends. every trainee had heard the rumors of the company's first group and was too busy trying to impress the teachers and the staff in order to be chosen for it. she heard scathing comments exchanged, she saw rivalries bloom and watched as others were sabotaged. heck, she even experienced it herself. eunbyul never let it get to her or stoop to their level though and was ready to lend a hand to everyone. she's thankful she never had a glamorous image of trainee life or else she'd have quit. her depression came back sometimes but she was able to persevere. finally, she was chosen for the group and was overwhelmed with happiness.
