Jey's Top 17 K-Pop Songs of the first half of 2017

about this

Someone slap me in the face. Why am I doing this? Oh right... because of Mari and because it's becoming a thing. I'm one of those people who follow trends.

...

But yeah, it's been kinda fun still xD

This is a list of my 2017 favorites so far and little explanations why I like them so much.

Do you know LC9? Then this song's beat will sound very familiar to you at first. But just at first, then those boys will blow you away.
Seriously, ever after I saw their teaser first I was waiting for MVP's debut and I was not disappointed. I love them so dearly, the choreography is lit, the MV looks flashy and I like both the tune and the voices of the guys. Their main rappers have very interesting voice colors and I hope they'll do some more of this super lit they're producing because I can't wait for more. If you don't know their song yet, CHECK IT OUT NOW OR LEAVE THIS PLACE IMMEDIATELY!
Let's all pray MVP will not stick in Nugu hell, because in all honesty, they deserve so much more.

Let me tell you a top secret about myself. I totally love cutesy concepts for guys. I'm such a er for this , it's not even funny anymore. I cried when Boyfriend changed their concept. I cried when IMFACT changed their concept. And I'm praying that TopSecret sticks to what they're currently doing. Even though their comeback Mind Crontrol wasn't as great as their debut (can't forget about the very weird chorus that is overly booming in my head whenever I listen to it), I love "She" so much, it was definitely my favorite debut this year. What is making me love these guys even more is not just the concept but also that their choreography looks very nice. It's fun to watch it, they do a great job dancing and totally deserves being watched (even though I know that a lot of people don't like those cute songs that give you diabetes from watching or just listening to it).

And the price for the most beautiful choreography this year goes to TEN! The song itself has some very nice oriental tunes and even though the lyrics are in English only and SUPER minimalistic, the choreography is giving the whole thing such a great roundup, damn boy this choreography is just everything. When I see it I see grass in the wind, leaves dancing when they fall down from the trees, it's nature everywhere. The asian costumes in the MV match just perfectly and even though the little snippets of Ten in a suit with all the other people around staring in the camera give super weird Mafia vibes, I really enjoy watching the MV every time I turn it on.

#14 - movie (btob)

BTOB has never really been a group that I listened to a lot except for WOW back then (but seriously that's like a century ago). I knew they existed, I knew that they had variety skills that were unbeatable and that was it. Then "Movie" happened. Or better said... Hyunsik happened. Hold me, otherwise I will jump at this overly skilled eye-candy. Holy sh** how came this being to exist and it just passed me by like this?!
I still gotta admit that Peniel does ruin this song a little for me. He does with most of the BTOB songs for me (I tried listening to various songs of them after Movie but I failed because I just couldn't stand Peniel's rapping, especially when Minhyuk had parts before or after Peniel and it contrasted so much that it hurt my ears all the more.... sorry Peniel. btw no hating here, I love Peniel, I watch his Youtube videos because he's so funny, I just don't think that he's any good at rapping) but Hyunsik saves this song with his soothing voice that is not only dropping my but it also gives me peace.

Crush just dropped this at us TODAY. AND I ALREADY SOLD MY SOUL TO HIM. This song is awesome and the MV is too (I mean come on... he's talking to the DOGE! DOOOOGE!!!! How can you NOT love it?!)
Also the collab with one of my absolute favorite rappers helps a lot. I kinda have the feeling this would have been even better if Dean had been in there, too, but you can't have it all sometimes. And then I'd probably would have dropped dead. Because this is perfection. And so chill. I don't wanna go outside tho, I want to stay inside and listen to this all day long.

I'm trying to not be biased but I can't with this guy. I mean, look at this cutie. How can you not buy all of the songs he throws at you when he gives you those puppy eyes? "She's Baby" to me is like one of the cutest and at the same time saddest lovesongs ever. And it's funny. I want to swoon, laugh and cry at the same time and it pains my heart as much as it gives me happiness. Stop this Zico, just stop. I don't think I need to mention the aesthetics in this MV. It's just perfect the way it is and I do love me some Zico every now and then.

I'm going to be honest with this song. I didn't like it at all when WINNER dropped it. To me this was just another of YG's super overrated songs that I couldn't listen to for too long. I didn't even check it out at first because I don't like those overhyped songs since even if they're great others quickly ruin them for me with their gushing and something inside me then screams "NO! DON'T LIKE IT! DON'T BE MAINSTREAM!". What made me warm up to this song was a very personal thing, tho. I just recently started dating my boyfriend and the very next day after we got together I was doubting my decision to say "Yes" A LOT. Nevertheless, he sent me the whole lyrics of Really Really in little packages and told me that there never had been a song that matched better to what he felt like ever before. That was the moment I knew everything was right. And that I really really love this song.

Every dancer around who does not like this song: OUT! Seventeen never disappoints with their choreographies and despite the super failed looking Butterfly Kick that The8 tried to do, this is a piece of art and I love it to bits. The song itself is super catchy (probably because it sounds like every other Chainsmoker song but I like them, so I don't really mind). I don't get why they gave Vernon singing lines when they have other vocalists that deserved those lines a lot more but they did it this way, I can't change it anyway, so I'll just accept it this way. Great song, great choreography, the MV was pretty okay, too.

They should have called the song "Steal yo girl" because that song makes me weak. And it hurts me so much how nugu those guys are.

EVERYONE LISTEN TO THIS SONG!!!!

The choreography is lit, the rap parts are lit, Doha has one of the most beautiful voices in K-Pop I've ever listened to and yet those guys are so underrated, I don't get it. BOYS24 deserves a lot more attention, I know people are hyping Produce 101 a lot more and I admit that they did better during the show than BOYS24 did but a group that drops a song like Steal your heart deserves so much more than being stuck in nugu hell.

THIS IS ONE OF MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE GROUPS! GIVE THEM THE LOVE THEY DESERVE!

When the husband totally kills it you just gotta love it. That you would think. But I strangely couldn't get into "Shine Forever" as i did with "Beautiful". The MV might not look as high quality as some others, especially during the dancing bits, but MonX still does a great job overall. I love the song a lot, even Wonho's ever present lisp and Jooheon's rap is killing me (kill me, I can't with this guy... anyone, tell me why he's so perfect?!). Still, I liked the tune of the teaser video a lot more than how the song came out as a final product. Maybe the reason why I can listen to the teaser for 10h straight while with other songs I do have my problems. Why this song is my #9? Simple. Because I'm a Jooheon ho. And also because they excelled in both the acoustic version as in the ASMR. Oh. And I love the choreography. The jacket moves? Smooth af. Monsta X surely deserves their fanbase (and you can bet you asses on that I'll do everything I can next week to get my VVIP tickets for the MonX concert in Berlin in August. JOOHEON, JUST YOU WAIT FOR ME!)

BTS is my absolute favorite group and they deserve their spot big time there. "Spring Day" gave me everything. A superb choreography, a song that makes me feel warm but makes me cry and the MV is so beautiful, shoot me. What touches me the most is that if you ever lost someone very important to you or know a person that is so very distant that he or she is out of reach... this song is so real, it makes me run into the next existential crisis. Watching the MV to the song makes it even harder not to start crying and ending up as a sobbing mess. Probably one of the reasons I can listen to this only a few times. But I still love it. And the only reason this is not ranking higher is that I'm the kind of person to prefer upbeat sounds and songs a lot more than the melancholic vibe. Crying isn't one of the things I like to do. I usually never cry. But BTS makes me cry with this.

Another group that never really got me interested in them. Until Highlight happened. Probably the best thing that BEAST ever did... because damn, I love this song so much. I'm still pissed about how they translated the Korean title into English but Highlight's not the first group that has some weird translation going on, so you guys may be forgiven. Everything that followed wasn't much of my style but this song sure thing had me hyped for a long, loooooong time and it even had me so far that I started overanalyzing the MV and I usually never analyze the MVs since most idols don't even know themselves what their MVs are supposed to mean (i.e. BTS with the exception for Jin who seriously took the time to read the book that the script writer got his inspiration from).

I don't know what kind of drugs choreographer Mihawk took when he came up with the choreography to "Kaching" but one is for sure... he made a crack choreography and I love it. Chen's penguin walk kills me everytime and damn you Xiumin being so sassy. I usually hate Japanese K-Pop song but this is the very first that got me hooked because "Ka-ching Ka-ching-ching" is playing over and over in my head the entire time. Fell in love with this one at first sight and I'm still sorry about Fresh 365 that came out the same time and didn't get proper attention from me due to this MV drop. But heck yeah, I LOVE Kaching. Did you watch the MV? I love the entire concept. Those flashy colors, the funny background dancers... rejkhfakjfhabdfjhb I JUST LOVE IT, FITE ME!

1.2.3 was definitely one of the highlights of 2017 for me. Even though they were one member down, BIG totally killed it and I love my little babies so much, I'm a little sad they didn't do as great during their life performances as they could have. Still, all the love for their comeback (and I like this one a lot more than their latest comeback) and the funny attempt of Gunmin saying "verrified", turning it in the most amusing "vellified". J-Hoon was as smooth as always, Heedo's English so much better than I ever imagined and Benji I shouldn't start with because then I'll be sitting here, gushing over him for the next few hours.

Can someone beat up the NCT stylist? No? Because everytime I watch an NCT MV I feel like the stylists are angry and need to vent their hatred on those poor boys. Then again I see who is coming up with all the choreographies for them and feel like "Jeez... you can't complain. Sometimes you have to pay with the outfits when choreographies are coming en masse in that quality". Limitless was one of the songs that I avoided like I avoided Really Really. Too hyped. To "overrated". But not overrated. This song and the choreography are super lit. I don't like the MV itself because it's a little too retro to me but the Performance MV does rescue a lot and Limitless is one of my current favorite songs and choreographies. btw am I the only one who mishers the "Thirsty for Love" parts as " for love" and the "Wake me up" as " me up"? xD

"Not Today" has given me a lot. A lot of fun. A lot of hype. A lot of everything I needed. Except for the 1st prize in the K-Pop World Festival Preliminary in Germany XD Yes, I AM salty. But I still love this song. The MV was blowing me away and the idea of dancing on a giant glass thingy mirror was WOW. Kudos to the person who had to clean it the entire time so it didn't look like when they danced on it and recorded the MV. I'm a little disappointed of how Jin basically did not get any screentime and it hurts my heart a lot (plus the editor must have hated Jimin to use the most unflattering shots of him) but overall I love this and even though the choreography wasn't Keone Madrid's best work, the song saved the choreo! (Usually it's the other way round for me but hey. Sometimes things have to be different, I guess). ALL FOR THE DROPS. THE DROPS AND THE PUMPING ENERGY EVERYWHERE.

And the winner is: ASTRO. Why? Because their song is catchy af, Jinjin turned into the bias wrecker of all times and holy that choreography is LIT. I started learning it straight when I finished watching the MV after the first time and daaaaaang, it's a masterpiece, there has never been a choreography that I wanted to learn as badly as I wanted to learn "Baby". It's fun, it's difficult and ASTRO dances it so clean and perfect, they just beat my favorite choreography, ROMEO'S "Target". I'm literally listening to this song the entire time with only a few songs in between whenever I feel like I should listen to something else before I get sick of this. But so far that didn't happen and seriously, this gives me such great vibes, a certain kind of satisfaction and happiness, ASTRO did just great. JUST. GREAT.
I'm annoying everyone around me with this song because I'm singing it the entire time or randomly dance to it, so yupp. This one it is. My number 1.

2017 top 17
First half!

jey, 23, probably the most biased person on this planet when it comes to choreographies. Yupp.

If you want to do this, too, feel free to do so. I tag everyone who wants to be tagged! gogogo!

If one can put japanese releases (a.k.a Ka-Ching) and an almost only performance song (a.k.a Dream in a Dream) I need to re-do my list. Oh list, just wait for me :De /run
