— hayoung is never scared to show people her true colours, and that is probably the charm that enables her to be easily likeable. she is always happy and full of energy, which can be seen easily even when she is performing as she uses that speciality of hers to portray the songs through her emotions. she is very approachable that people tend to get close to her in a short time. she can turn an awkward situation lively even by her presence alone. she is always the first one to approach new faces, making her appointed as an outcast saver among the pledis family alongside seungkwan of seventeen. other than that, she is very optimistic and is always confident in what she does. she tends to expect the best in all possible ways, even if it seems almost impossible. she is often assured that her decisions are of the best quality; although it is always the worst of all. negativity is almost out of her dictionary. hayoung is well-known for her hard work and strong will, especially being one of the longest-trained trainees in pledis. she is determined towards her goal; that is to make good music and to let people to listen to it through a debut. every day, she would stay up till 3 to 4 in the morning to improve on her skills. she often gets sick due to that as well and her nose would bleed sometimes due to lack of sleep. she’d turn serious when it is time for practice as she’d get too absorbed into it to even joke around with others. she hates it when trainees fool around during their training since she thinks that they’d distract other trainees from focusing, so she often nags at them. due to this, trainees often address her as the female jihoon (woozi of seventeen) for that their personalities are similar when it comes to practicing.

 

— hayoung is one mischievous kid who really likes to pull pranks on others, and she even formed a prank squad alongside seungkwan and yebin (rena of pristin). their all-time favourite victim would be pledis’ representative, kim yeonsoo. had anyone in pledis wake up to their face being doodled with marker pens, it’d be because of this trio. they are always caught into trouble and would end up getting punished; but i guess that is the only way to find joy in the midst of a hard journey, no? aron from nu’est would always , “this is why you’d never debut, im hayoung”, but she’d laugh it off anyway. hayoung, however, is rather sensitive. though she takes things positively, she’d always take them to heart. she is easily scarred just by a single hatred comment from a hater or a blunt statement from her trainer. sure, she’d try to hide her sadness but for all we know her eyes would glisten and turn crystal from the tears she tried to hold. this girl has a lot of tears and is a crybaby protect her pls. hayoung is also clumsy somehow. she’d trip over things that lies obviously in front of her eyes, knock over a closed glass door, hit her head on a table while sneezing, and the list goes on. she tends to mix her words up too when she gets too panicked. despite reaching almost 20 in korean age, hayoung can act like a lost kid. she finds everything amusing, even if it is just a large plushie of donald duck. the thoughts she have fascinates people at times since she can be as random as she can. because of her childish personality, mingyu of seventeen fancies bickering with her – and seeing hayoung chasing him around with woozi’s guitar had been a daily situation in pledis; and that would be without woozi’s consent, of course.

 

 

     

 

background

— hayoung comes from a decent family originated from the city of busan. her family consists of at least a father, a mother, and an older brother. due to the short of three years with her brother, they are really close to each other. both of her parents came from a dancing background, so hayoung and her brother, youngmin, have been in the dancing scene since they were kids. dance competitions are almost like their playground, and the dance studio their parents own is their second home. in 2009 when hayoung was 11, she started to watch videos of rappers like dok2 and verbal jint under the influence of her own brother. ever since, she slowly showed interest in rapping and had been practising with her brother.

 

— she decided to go for brand new stardom (now split into brandnew music and hunus entertainment) right away as they were known for being a hip hop record label, though later was rejected as she was said to be very young and not compatible for the respective agency. she did not give up on her dream and as she waited for the next audition opportunity, she got herself involved in writing short verses of rap that later turned into a number of complete lyrics of songs. she might be young, but the passion she had made her move forward. from then onwards, she started to show interest in song-producing as well. on the following year, a pledis representative scouted her while she was on her way to watch a baseball game with her brother. the rep had asked her to go for their audition, in which she later did. she got in for her self-written rap and her dance where for the audition she had danced to ‘through with love’ by destiny’s child.

— hayoung is very much loved by youngmin and they are very close to each other. hayoung tends to tell everything to youngmin, and the same goes to youngmin as well; since they only had each other. being older by 3 years, youngmin is overprotective around hayoung and is always worrying about her. they joke around each other a lot and whenever they converse you’d hear their deep busan satoori. he is always there for hayoung to turn to when she couldn’t decide on things. hayoung is very clingy and attached to youngmin. although their companies aren’t near to each other’s but their dorms are, so sometimes they’d meet up when youngmin’s training is over.

— they said if someone’s personality is almost similar as yours, he/she is your other half. the thing is, yebin and hayoung are very similar to each other; from personality, to likes and dislikes, and even to talent. they share almost the same height, so whenever they’re together, others often can’t differentiate them from the back. the only thing that differentiates them would most probably only be their looks. although yebin joined pledis a little later than hayoung did, they became close to each other since not many 98liners were around when they first trained. both of them majored in rap and dance so they would always be together while training and would monitor each other’s performances in order to point out what is there to improve or fix on. they’re both known among pledis artists to excel in power dance, as well as being a part of pledis’ unofficial prank squad (alongside seungkwan). they take care of each other as if they're sisters. although yebin had made her debut in pristin, they still keep in touch with each other.

— here goes a tragic love story cues u-kiss’ 0330. hayoung had always admired mingming ever since he joined pledis, and the fact that he is also a dancer made her fall for him even more. they were never close to each other having a language barrier, but they had this thing going on where they’d communicate through dancing. they’d train side by side, dancing next to each other, and it would look as if they were having a conversation, except that it was expressed through a dance. they’ve had dance performances together, but every time they attempt a verbal conversation it would turn into a mess. it’d turn awkward, so they thought it was only better for them to continue doing what they did – dancing, that is. sure, they’ve developed feelings for each other. but by the time mingming realised that, he had already left pledis to go back to shanxi. ever since, he would send letters to hayoung through junhui. the letters were written in chinese, and instead of accepting junhui’s offer to translate the letters, she chose to learn chinese and read the letters by herself. however, the letters stop coming in after a while. maybe he met a new love and maybe he had forgotten about her; but her feelings for him would still remain the same. this has also given an impact towards hayoung where she could barely ever like anyone else the same way she liked mingming.

persona the zero hero — in korean, "zero place" is considered greater than "first place" because 0 comes before 1 (credit). as "young" is how zero is pronounced in korean, it's basically a wordplay of hayoung's name; besides proving that her talent deserves to be emphasized after her long training period.

trainee life  

hayoung never knew that the life of a trainee could be very hard when she first went for the audition. the competition to get into the company itself is already intense, let alone among the trainees. pledis is known for their dungeon full of trainees, both boys and girls, and regardless of gender, everyone there are rivals with each other; but of course, in a good way. being in pledis for 7 years, hayoung had seen a lot of trainees come and go; some made their debut in nu’est and hello venus, some in the line-up of seventeen, and some even made their way to become new members of after school; gaeun, for example, had trained with hayoung for years. there were times she felt like giving up. she thought her skills were deteriorating and were not good enough for her to be able to debut. she had also thought of going for a different road, because maybe, just maybe, entertainment isn’t the right path for her.

when pledis grouped her up with 11 other girls forming a predebut team called twoteen, she saw a light of hope. they were able to gain recognition from all of the promotions pledis gave them that should’ve been given to nu’est and after school smh but okie- and they were more than sure they’d debut anytime soon; but pledis’ income has lessened, and promotions for them has decreased, and soon the girls were forgotten by both pledis and the public. the light of hope turned dimmer and dimmer, and soon their world turned darker than ever.

it bothered her even more when in 2015, twoteen’s debut was cancelled and her best friend, yebin, was accepted in the line-up of ladyteen alongside 6 other girls. since then, her little mind would often question herself over her capability to debut. ladyteen was able to participate in produce101, a survival show almost all female trainees in the industry would want to join. it’s a one-time opportunity to see how far they can go, and if they can finally have a proper debut. meanwhile in pledis, hayoung was still placed among the trainees whom nobody knows when will they be exposed to the public (again). minus ladyteen, hayoung would always be in the top 3 for every monthly evaluation, she’d work hard even if her body was aching terribly. she needed her debut to happen. hayoung literally grew up in pledis. the artists and the trainees are her big family. even if training was hard, she wouldn’t want to leave any sooner. “even if i have to wait till the very end, i won’t give up,” she once said. 7 years is a long period, and she knew she couldn’t quit given that she had already considered pledis as her home and destiny.

in mid 2017, pledis announced that they will be debuting their next girl group after pristin (formerly ladyteen and pledis girlz with the addition of 3 more hidden trainees). every female trainees were beyond excited upon the news, especially twoteen, but for hayoung, she was extremely nervous. this could be her final chance, she thought. when she saw her name being listed with all of her sisters from twoteen, she promised to the heavens she’d double her efforts and would even stop pulling pranks on kim yeonsoo and han sungsoo but she continued pranking them anyway.
