APPEARANCE & LOOKS: Semi has always been a pretty girl, but why be pretty when you can be drop dead gorgeous instead? The industry is competitive and there's no place for second place, after all. Double eye-lid surgery, nose job and intensive dieting later, and Semi looks every bit the visual that she is. Her extremely pale face is elegant and almost doll-like with her plump lips, sculpted nose and doe eyes, and her body is to die for - by Korean standards, of course. In truth, Semi might be a bit too skinny (as in, borderline stick-thin) for her own good, but who cares when people like Yoona are considered to have the best bodies in the industry.

(fun fact: on screen she looks so much taller than the actual 159 centimeters she sports in real life. When you see her in real life, it really is a shock how tiny she actually is)

FASHION & STYLE: Semi will wear practically anything. While most of her wardrobe consists of pants/shorts and shirts, she will wear a skirt or a dress once in a while. She doesn't wear a lot of accesories - usualy just a hat or some jewelry. Her main focus when picking an outfit will always be the shoes, since she's obssesed with them. Her hair will usualy be down, unless it's styled by someone else - Semi likes doing stuff with her hair, but at it.

PERSONALITY: 

Semi is the perfect example that hard work pays off. With no born talent for singing, rapping or dancing, the hard work she put during her trainee years at Big Hit Entertainment (as well as her natural charisma and humor) are what really gave her a spot in Ocean.

The hard working nature of hers is backed up with some tough skin and a hell of a determination, as well as the need to be approved by higher ups (the company) and the mass (the fans). 

Her passion for certain things - music and performing, for example - is known to all. You could practically see her glow when she talks about something she really enjoys. If she's feeling passionate towards something - usually that would be performing - she can lose herself in it. Such was the case when she was a trainee; Semi could practice for hours and feel like barely 30 minutes have passed. It has its downsides, of course, in the form of the toll such a life is taking on her body. Feeling tired all the time is normal (though she is so used to it she doesn't even notice all the time), and so is feeling unwell frequently.

Another dominant trait of hers is her love for attention. Semi had never had stage fright; on the contrary, she enjoys being in the center. Feeling confident and comfortable when all eyes are turned towards her allows Semi to give a performance full of charisma, confidence and passion. It doesn't mean she's fearless and doesn't get nervous before being on stage, but as soon as she does, Semi feels at home.

Semi's natural charisma radiates off her like heat, engulfing everyone and everything. It's quite hard to dislike her, at least if you don't know him well enough, as she tries very hard to appeal to everyone she approaches. Most of the time she succeeds, but how can she not? The extremely sincere smile, the humorous nature that eases up tension and the ability to say just the right thing at the right time is a skill mastered by Semi . People see only what she wishes for them to be seen. Only those who are close enough can see her volunarabilities, the need to be wanted, the need to be loved and heard. Not many get to see this side.

BACKGROUND: 

From the moment Semi was born, people told her she was beautiful. She was a beautiful baby, and a beautiful child. The first thing people always noticed about her was her looks, and that impression stuck. And while Semi quickly learned that being pretty could give you a huge advantage, she also learned that once people saw you as "pretty" it was hard for them to see you as anything else.

It was always "wha, Semi is so pretty!" instead of "Semi is so good!" or "Semi is so smart!", and even though she enjoyed being the best in the visuals department, it wasn't enough for her. She always had a need to be appreciated, and not just in one department - she had to be appreciated for all of her. And she was more than a pretty face, at least in her opinion.

Even as a child she strived to be the best at everything - sports, music, education, and of course looks. That resulted in her asking her parents to be signed to as many after-school activities as she could. They, of course, were ecstatic that their little girl was curious and ambitious, and thus Semi was introduced to drawing, the piano, singing, acting and ballet. All she enjoyed, but none actually excelled. Her looks remained, as always, her best asset. And it wasn't like she didn't enjoy it - the attention she recieved (from highe-rups, students or just plain strangers) was flattering, but also full of opportunities. Girls offered her to hang with them, guys offered her their homework in exchange for a smile. 

It really was no wonder that by the age of fifteen Semi decided to try herself in entertainment. Looks are, and always have been, a major key in the industry, and people have always told her she was extremely beautiful. So why not? Singing, dancing and playing the piano have already become hobbies of hers, and it's not like she was extremely bad at those. An Idol career was rather appealing, and Semi said "why the hell not?" and auditioned for SM. That didn't go well.

Apparently, she was pretty, but "not pretty enough", and if only she had a double-eyelid surgery and a nose job she could've been perfect as a model (a singer was out of the question) in their company. Semi was a little bit more than pissed. Everything that she was had been insulted - her skills, her looks - and it wasn't even like it was true. Semi was beautiful. Semi was skilled. And Semi wasn't going to easily back down.

So instead of trying to audition for SM again, she looked for a company that would accept her and focus on training her skills rather than her looks. Such a company happened to be BigHit. Of course, she was mainly accepted for her looks, but there was something else too. The company saw her hard-working nature, her charisma and her potential as a performer and an idol. She was confident and charismatic even though her skills weren't the best. So with a promise to improve her skills and do her best to be the best, Semi was accepted into BigHit Entertainment.

As a trainee she started tackling her dancing and singing with double the fervor. Apparently, her skills weren't as good as she always thought they were (they were, after all, only hobbies before), and she wasn't even on an average level in terms of talent. All she really had were her looks, and she was ridiculed for that. Some of the other trainees weren't quiet about their opinions, and told her that the only reason she got into the company was because she was pretty enough and shook her nicely enough in front of the staff. Those words hurt Semi, as they tackled all of her insecurities. But instead of giving up, she developed a thick skin and a firey passion to prove them wrong and be appreciated at last.

Semi abandoned any other activities she had - maintaining above average grades included - in favor of improving her performing skills. The intense boot-camp lasted for about a year and a half before it was decided that Semi was good enough to debut. So when talks about Ocean stirred within the company, she was one of the candidates considered. But, even though her skills improved, she was still chosen for the line-up thanks to her looks. During the year Ocean trained together, Semi improved her skills even more, and eventually became a lead vocalist of the group. It felt amazing and Semi finally started to feel like she was appreciated for who she is rather than how she looks. But at the same though she knew - she just knew - that she got a spot in Ocean thanks to her looks, and it both saddens her and angers her. But she's too afraid to ask, too afraid to know the truth. For now, she's just happy that she got to debut.

(fun fact: That encounter with SM left Semi with a bit of a complex - she begged BigHit to pay for a double-eyelid surgery and a nose job, and reluctantly the company agreed. Now she thinks she looks much better, while others often admit that they thought that before the surgery Semi was more special and unique)

"Ocean's Semi accused of being in the group only for her looks" - partly true. Semi truly was accepted into BigHit and into Ocean thanks to her looks, but she wouldn't have been able to stay in the trainee program if her skills weren't improving and she wasn't on a level decent enough to be a lead vocalist.

STRENGTHS + WEAKNESSES: Semi's absolute main strength would be her charisma and visuals. She carries herself (both on stage and in real life) with confidence and charm, and it translates well into a performance. She catches the attention of the audience both with her looks and charisma, and she has worked hard to make her perofrmances entertaining to the crowd - she's the kind of idol that does a lot of fan service during a stage and her facial expressions are to die for. But when it comes to actual skill... Semi is lacking far behind.

Her hard work may have made her go from talentless pretty face to a lead vocalist, but when you compare her to other lead vocalists she's not as strong and her technique isn't as good. Her voice is pretty enough to listen to, but she still strains a lot of high notes and is more comfortable singing in a mid-range.

When it comes to dancing, it's worse than singing but still managable. It takes her a while to learn new choreographies, and she's not going to be the member that gets invited to Hit The Stage. Thank god she's hard-working, so her lack of talent is covered up with a lot of sleepless nights and tiredless practice sessions.

Rap is... we don't talk about rap. She could potentially say a word here and there in a song, but actual, proper rap... Semi won't be able to do it. She doesn't get flow, and no matter how hard she tried, she simply can't rap well.

— Clowns Ugh nope, they're way too creepy, Especially with those toothy smiles. If she's startled enough by one she'll cry like a little girl.
— Public transportation In Seoul especially. Way too crowded, way too smelly, not half as elegant as she would've liked.
— Squash that plant is straight out of hell.

HABITS & HOBBIES:
— Skinship She loves touching; hugging, holding hands, kissing. It translates well during variety shows and performances, when the fans go crazy for this kind of fanservice. Potential lovers go crazy for that sort of affection as well.
— Playing the piano She took lessons when she was a child and stopped when she became a trainee. Even though she's nowhere near the level she once was, she enjoys playing the piano once in a while, especially if she feels emotional and there's no one around.
— Acting It's still a hobby because she didn't do any payed acting, but Semi is a visual and we all know what happens to kpop visuals and what they end up doing in the end.

— Her stage name is Semi - it's a name unique enough, and the company loved the connection fans created between her and the BTS song.

Semi's parents were very supportive of her career's choice, perhaps because they knew that with her grades she'd have a hard time finding a decently paying job, while her face can bring her enough income while it's still pretty. As a child they provided her every need, and even though they're protective of her and tend to shield her from harm's way, that's because they really care about their precious only child.

Even though at first Semi was very reluctant about the other members, the one year spent training together had made her open up to them, and now they're basically family. While there are some members she's more open with than others (probably the leader, but it really depends on her personality), the other members are her 4 best friends. When she's with them, she goes totally crazy and wild and is completely unguarded. They have the best chemistry and work really well together.

Semi loves fliritng with Jimin, but most of the time he doesn't even notice. When he does notices, the funniest reactions can be expected from him, and that makes it totally worth it. Among the males of bangtan he's the closest to her.
