face claimMeng Jia

height & weight 168 cm, 52 kg

appearance

She is not one to turn heads because of her beauty, that is for sure. With an angular face (or is it blocky? People are never 100% sure), and a scar under her left eye, Xuanya is nowhere near as pretty as Tourmaline or even Hani and Reni. Not that it matters to her, in the end, or at least not that it matters much.  Her body is very toned, and a bit more muscular than wanted for a girl, but it is her pride and glory. It's her weapon, and she takes care of it as much as a mafia don takes care of his guns.

personality traits Perfectionist, indecisive, courageous, hard-working, intuitive, competitive, secretive

personality

— She tries to be an optimist, but with everything in her life being a various degree of ty, it's kind of hard

Truth be told, Xuanya is not a glass half full kind of person. She doesn't see her admirable achievements. She sees that she is not the best, that there is someone else above her, that she failed to reach her own way too high expectations. She is a perfectionist to the core and has a hard-working nature to back it up. She's not Eungyoung, she doesn't have talent or charisma. She's competitive just like her, enjoying the adrenaline and the thrill of the fight, the immense satisfaction of winning, there is no better feeling. But at the same time they are so different. Nobody ever presents Xuanya what she wants on a silver platter, she needs to work her off for each and every thing. She always prepares before a fight, doing her homework and thinking of every outcome, every possibility (or at least everything she can think of. She's not smart enough to do that, nor does she claim to be).

Not that it matters, at the end. Preparations are great, but Xuanya has always been intuitive, and it saved her many a time in a fight before. The thing is, she's really not book smart, logic abandons her when the rush of adrenaline takes over. But her gut tells her what's wrong and what's right, and her brain doesn't need to process it before her leg delivers a swift kick. It's much easier that way.

The brain always adds stupid things like fear and doubt to the equation, and it's the last thing Xuanya needs in the Arena, or in real life in general. She is very courageous - she runs head straight into a fight and lets her instincts take over - but she is in no way brave. She doesn't let her emotions get the best of her, pushing them aside and locking them in a box, but god, when there is no adrenaline and no attacks, and it's just real life and there is only her and her mind and her heart... fear and doubt and guilt and envy, they all gnaw at her like hungry beasts, and at those moments she is all but a scared girl who doesn't know what to do with her life and thinks that what she does is wrong and she will never achieve what she wants. Everything is so much easier in the Arena.

Sometimes she thinks she prefers the virtual life to the real one. In the virtual life, she is but a competitor, fighting her way up the rankings. In the virtual life, Eungyoung is an opponent, someone to be defeated so she could advance and get the title she wants so badly. In real life, Eungyoung is her best friend, or was her best friend, she is not sure what they are anymore. In real life, she is Wang Xuanya, and she is so confused about everything that's happening in her life. She wants to feel good about Eungyoung's position, wants to support her like best friends are supposed to, but she's feeling envy, and she's feeling anger, and of course, she's feeling guilty because she's feeling envy and anger. In real life, Wang Xuanya is not sure where she stands anymore. She knows, logically, that there is no place for her at the academy anymore. She's 24, the Sapphire Crystal is taken and there's no way any other crystal is going to pick her (and honestly she doesn't want it), she is wasting her time at the academy - time she could've been investing in her career in the Arena, the goal she still has a chance to achieve - and yet she doesn't act. She's courageous, but she's not brave. Real life is very different from VR, and in real life Xuanya is afraid to act. There are too many variables, too many repercussions to her decisions. She is very indecisive when it comes to actual decisions that she thinks will affect her life. There is no going back from what she decides, so Xuanya refuses to decide. It's so much easier to let others decide for her - whether if her age that would get her kicked out of the academy, or any other crystal that would choose her and seal her fate.

She doesn't tell any of this to anyone, naturally. How could she? She's never been an open person, but this... this is a whole new level of ed up for her. How could she feel like that towards her best friend? How could she prefer the unreal to real life? It's so much easier - and again with the "easy decisions" - to just ignore it all. If she doesn't tell any of this to anyone, then it's not real, right? Words will make everything come true. For now Xuanya wishes to just continue living in her virtual reality.

background

—

It was actually her mother that pushed Xuanya to try to get accepted into the Crystal Star Academy. She always wanted her daughter to achieve greatness, and it didn't matter to her that her daughter was in no way scientifically inclined. Crystal Star Academy was prestigious. Xuanya was to try and get into it. Her father, ever the passive husband, didn't interfere in his wife's schemes."Alterverse science is a blooming filed", her mother said. "It would get you good money and you'll be able to find a husband just as prestigious". And at 17 (unless Eungyoung gets accepted at another time, that's up to you!) Xuanya really had no say in the matter. She found herself in South Korea, walking through a weird looking door. And then suddenly she has the right genes or right whatever to train as a future Crystalline member. Accepting meant not disappointing her parents and at the same time finally getting away from their clutches and being independent, as well as being the hero of the world. To teenager Xuanya the answer was obvious, and soon she found herself walking the halls of the Academy.

It soon turned out that being by herself in a different country was both amazing and very ty. Language has proven to be the hardest task to conquer, but Xuanya was hard-working and soon could more or less converse in Korean (as long as no big words were used. them). Loneliness was also a problem, but for that, she had Eungyoung, who quickly became her best friend and the person to drag her everywhere and explain to her everything she didn't know. Eungyoung was her guide and her sister, and without her, Xuanya would've been lost. Classes proved to be hard, especially the ones that were science-themed - thank god for the hot professor, Dr. Shag You erm Dr. Shingyu - but Xuanya just studied hard and let Eungyoung lead the way through the years.

Then Eungyoung got interested in the Arena. She, of course, dragged Xuanya into the VR sport, and Xuanya was in love. The two of them had an edge against the other players thanks to the Academy lessons, and it didn't take long for them to become formidable opponents. Eungyoung had always been more talented, but Xuanya kept up with hard work and will. They trained together, and slowly but surely advanced the leagues, until both of them became two of the best players - Eungyoung went to win the title of the champion, while Xuanya remained somewhere between the fifth and second places throughout the years. It made Xuanya jealous, but it wasn't bad. She could always train more, get better for the next tournament until she'd be good enough to overthrow Eungyoung and reign as champion of the Arena. It was in no way the breaking point in their friendship.

It happened when the Sapphire crystal chose Eungyoung. It left Xuanya completely lost, with no idea what to do next. It never occurred to her that because both of them are so affiliated towards Sapphire, one day it will choose one over the other. She never expected it to happen. In one short moment, she lost all she has worked for in the Academy. She tried being optimistic about it, tried being happy for Eungyoung, but it was beyond hard and she was beyond angry with the world to be happy.

So now she is, almost 25, with no future in Crystalline and no future outside Crystalline. The Arena is her only option, but she's too indecisive to make the choice just yet. She's rather do nothing and let the universe decide for her. Choice is way too scary, and it's not like she has much time left anyway.

relationships

— Kim Eungyoung | 25 | it's complicated | They got accepted together. They struggled together. They battled together. Then the crystal chose Eungyoung, and Xuanya was left all alone.

They met on the first day of the academy. Eungyoung was a few months older, but it didn't matter. They became friends, then best friends. Both of them had the same crystal preference ("Sapphire is the coolest", was always followed by a mutual nod), and they helped each other conquer its weaknesses and embrace its strengths. It was Eungyoung that forced Xuanya to try out the Arena, and then they became even closer. They did everything together. Then the crystal - the coolest crystal, the one both only dared to dream about - chose Eungyoung. Not Xuanya. Eungyoung. And Xuanya's door was shut in her face. She tried to be happy for her best friend, she truly did, but the disappointment was devastating. Xuanya feels like she has failed herself and failed Eungyoung, but there is nothing she can do about it. Eungyoung keeps saying that it changed nothing, that they are still the best of friends and there is nothing wrong, but there is something so obviously wrong. Xuanya is jealous, and Xuanya is hurt, but Xuanya knows it's not Eungyoung's fault so it makes everything even worse. Basically, Eungyoung represents everything Xuanya wishes to be - the best in the Arena, the wileder of the Sapphire Crystal - but Eungyoung, her best friend, took it away from her. It's a weird state of mind, and boy does it make everything awkward.

trivia

— Sapphire. Sapphire all the way. It's the crystal she feels most connected to, and the only crystal she uses in the Arena. When she's forced to use a different crystal in the training simulation classes, she feels like she's cheating on her lover.
— Xuanya's go-to weapon in the Arena is a set of whips, that turn into water whips when combined with the Sapphire crystal. They're good both for long and close range combat, and even though they don't cut like swords, they can choke and they can drown, and the whiplash itself sure hurts like hell.

— Xuanya is constantly training so that she'd be in shape for the Arena. She's in perfect shape, but it takes away from her social life (what social life?).
— the scar under Xuanya's eye is from a monster. During their third year, Eungyoung and Xuanya were walking in Seoul when one of the attacks occured. Both of them rushed to help, thinking that the fact that they were training to be in Crystalline would help them, but without actual powers there was not much they could do. The wound hurt like hell afterwards, but now has dulled to a scar. Xuanya doesn't even remember what she looked like before, and looking at older pictures where she doesn't have it is weird. It's still a sensitive topic somtimes, but all in all she doesn't mind it.

why do you want to be a magical girl?

"I want to help people. It has always been my calling, and I want to do whatever I can to help our world." She repeats the standard answer from diplomacy class. Better that than saying "I don't ing know why, it's too early for philosophical debates and ."

if you are selected, which crystal would you prefer?

Sapphire, of course. Only Sapphire. But Sapphire is gone... and she really doesn't want her thoughts to go to that direction. "Does it matter? It's the crystal that chooses you, not the other way around."

what kind of weapon do you think you'll have?

"A whip. That's the weapon I use in the Arena and it's the one I'm most comfortable with." Not that it matters. Sapphire is the crystal she's most comfortable with, and if she's not getting it chances are she's probably not getting her dream weapon either. The alterverse just wants to screw with her. Just her luck that an entire universe wants to her, but not one pesky person from that universe. Just her luck.

brief personality

—  Eccentric, a little crazy, but nice enough.

perhaps? friendly, awkward in that cute laugh-it-off-adorably way, smart, a good listener but a very bad talker, afraid of getting too attached to people, the kind of guy that everyone considers as a friend but he himself doesn't and is kind of lonely, but of course he doesn't show it and instead keeps on laughing and smiling, surrounding himself with a sea of people but feeling like a man stranded in the middle of the ocean.

brief love story

— She'd let him research her alright.

Also known as the only good thing about Alterversersian science.

Xuanya has had the hots for him from the first year at the Academy, when Eungyoung dragged her to volunteer in one of his research experiments. It was embarrassing, really. It's Dr. Kang, for 's sake! Eungyoung laughed at her for months when she finally blurted it out during a drunk hangout. But she couldn't help it. What was an original attraction transformed into a very embarrassing puppy crush, and Xuanya doesn't even know why! Maybe it's the way he talks about his research with so much passion, and it reminds her of how she talks about the Arena. Or maybe it's the way he smiles and the world immediately seems brighter and sunnier. Maybe it's the - , she sounds like a stupid schoolgirl. But she can't help it. He's hot, he's smart as , he makes her smile despite herself, and she really can't explain what is it about him that makes him so attractive in her eyes.

For now, there's a lot of awkward flirting involved on her part. She doesn't even know how he feels about her, or what the it is she feels about him. But the awkward flirting. Oh the awkward flirting. And a lot of extra volunteering work. She's such a good student.

Maybe if she gets sick Dr. ShagYu would give her his special medicine?
