Beast's Shock performances by Produce 101 trainees

TEAM A (Red Team)

VOCALS

The starting vocal was a bit weak as it wasn’t a distinct voice that would get you lure your interest, but when the harmony came it, it sounded wonderful! When rapper 1 (Kim Dohyeon) started, I immediately noticed how steady and good his rap was, and this impression lasted throughout the whole song. Rapper 2 (Jung Hyojun) had the voice quality for it – his voice was crisp, deep and clear, but his raps sounded a bit plain and lacked some boost of confidence, and I wished he could’ve delivered it better. The rest of the vocals are very clean, although some needed a pinch of power in the solo parts. The high note was good, but it sounded a little anticlimactic and a little shaky. Despite these, I especially like how it sounded really full and powerful, where you could clearly hear the deep+high voice combo. Their technique was good as they don’t sound strained or forced at all, and the vocalists seemed very comfortable hitting the notes. High marks for this groups’ blending and harmonies!

SCORE: Vocals – 36.5

CHOREOGRAPHY

The starting choreography was clean, and great for building up the excitement for the verses. At some parts, there were times when they weren’t synchronized, but that’s nitpicking. I was looking for something or a part that would showcase their dance skills more, to lose the plain feeling but somehow they managed to make it look energetic despite this. Also, props to the injured member who was still diligently doing the dance moves and playing his parts! If you can’t really see the chair in a far view, you’d never really notice that he was sitting~

SCORE: Choreo – 27.25

CONCEPT

I don’t really have much to say for the concept because the song could do both boyish and manly themes, depending on how you utilize it. They portrayed the feeling of the song well, though I was looking for some contribution by the center. But overall, it was okay.

SCORE: Concept – 8.75

IMPACT

Shock isn’t the type of song that offers strong vocals, but a song that has really good raps so I was anticipating the rap parts the most. As I mentioned before, I find Rapper 2’s rap a little weak, which kind of disappointed me. They lacked a little in the power rap department, but props to the injured member who caught my eye (and my ear) because of his harmonies.

SCORE: Impact – 18

TEAM A’S TOTAL: 90.50

TEAM B (Blue Team)

VOCALS

The raspy full voice of the first singer hooked me into the song really fast, but I was looking for some harmonies in the beginning as what Team A did, it could’ve added more effect. Verse-wise, their vocals are clean and stable, and most importantly, their rappers were really good! The two rappers in this team were equally good in terms of voice quality, confidence and swag, and this aspect really stood out for me. Their choruses were powerful and strong, though I was looking for some good harmonies (maybe there were but not really that loud or evident). STRONGEST POINT: the high note. I didn’t really expect much for the high note and I was caught off guard by the powerful belt, it was really clean and their voice blended well!

SCORE: Vocals – 38.25

CHOREOGRAPHY

Same as Team A, I also really like how they began the dance. Throughout the whole performance, they utilized the stage space really well, filling it but not really scattering. Shock’s dance moves don’t really need fast foot work so the most important aspect would be looking like one group when they all dance together with equal energy levels – and they were excellent in that department. What really stood out to me was the ending part, when one dropped down—it was unexpected, and I give them high marks for ending the performance with something unexpected.

SCORE: Choreo – 28

CONCEPT

Again, I will judge this part by how they look and feel the song as they perform sooooo-

SCORE: Concept – 9

IMPACT

The impact of their performance relied heavily on their vocal parts, especially during the bridge and the high note. The most memorable parts (for me) would be the really clean high note and that “ireoke” by the two rappers, as well as the end drop. In comparison, this performance was a little more exciting and memorable for me.

SCORE: Impact – 18.25

TEAM B’s TOTAL: 93.50

RECAP: Team A garnered a total of 90.50 points and Team B got a total of 93.50 points.

SEUL’S JUDGMENT: TEAM B WINS!

I feel like this review is not as detailed as the previous two reviews I made and I’m not exactly sure why T.T I’ll try to do better in the next one though~
EXTRA: I haven’t watched the whole episode yet, and I’m really curious about what happened to the member of Team A who got injured. I hope he’s okay!

So, what do you guys think of their performances?

Let me know your thoughts~
