「 SEUL THE SLEUTH 」Rap Position Evaluation: a Produce 101 S2 Review

RAPPING STORIES.

Hello, everyone! This is EXTREMELY LATE (the one prior to this was already late) but it’s a waste not to finish reviewing all performances because they were wonderful and it’s a way to appreciate their efforts in preparing them so without further ado, we shall start with our rapping position review!

So the criteria for this will be as follows:

CRITERIA

Delivery (flow, clarity, coherence, emotion) – 80%

Impact (stage presence, overall appeal) – 20%

TOTAL: 100%

DISCLAIMER: I am not a professional in this field and some technical term usage may be wrong, so please forgive the errrors! This review is purely my objective preference and opinion, and I'd like to hear other's opinion, too! So don't be shy to comment down below what you think :)

Niga Aldeon Naega Anya from SMTM5

KIM SANGGYUN

His voice is the thin rapper type and it suits the song really well, which I did not expect. His flow was smooth and though his words were not perfectly clear, it was coherent enough and understandable. The part that really got me hooked into his performance was his facial expressions – I like how he plays around with a variety of expressions like those little grins and smirks, and I can really say he’s enjoying the performance.

WOO JINYOUNG

This type of song suits his voice a thousand times better than his previous performance (Mansae) and I’m glad that he was finally able to showcase his rap better. His voice is also on the high-side and thin, which really got stuck in my head when he started. He has the vibe of a rapper and has his own rapping style, but personally, it’s not my cup of tea. There was a good amount of swag in his delivery but there were some points where he sways it too much and ends up being unclear. Despite this, he knows when to add stress to really good parts which makes it memorable.

LEE EUIWOONG

In contrast to his other two teammates, his voice was thicker which comes out naturally stronger and deeper. His flow was okay, but because his voice is quite hoarse and raspy, there are some points where the words weren’t coherent. There was enough swag in his delivery, but his eyes seem a little too dry to capture an audience. Looking at him performing, there were glimpses when I can say that he probably doesn’t suit this type of concept that much, and I know he could’ve done better.

Niga Aldeon Naega Anya WINNER: Kim Sanggyun with 96 points.

Rhythm Ta by IKON

LEE GWANGHYUN

I like his raspy and strong rapper voice, and his starting line caught my attention fast. His flow was smooth, and his words were clear and coherent enough, except for the last lines of his beginning solo part which I didn’t really hear at all. He delivered well, and looked natural and a bit laid-back while performing, but I feel like it lacked a little umf factor.

LEE WOOJIN

First of all, I never expected him to be a rapper (his looks say otherwise xD). His flow was good – it didn’t sound awkward and was really clear all throughout. Some of his gestures look a little practiced here and there, but overall, he looks like he was having fun on stage. Like Gwanghyun, I was also looking for some more impact in his performance and a pinch of it would have been great.

KIM TAEWOO

Again, I never thought he was a rapper until this performance. His first line was strong and good, and it caught my attention. Although during his second part (during the bridge), his flow sounded a little awkward and maybe a little off beat(?). In an overall perspective, he looks uncomfortable and lost at times, and affected the impact of his performance greatly.

Rhythm Ta WINNER: Lee Gwanghyun with 94 points.

Fear by MINO

LAI GUAN LIN

As an international fan, I thank him for starting it with English lyrics (subs where are you?). He’s not that fluent (but he probably prefers it), but I commend his clean English part knowing that he has to stay in a very tight beat in saying it. His rap had really good flow and it sounded good and clear. I personally like his clean rapper voice which is more on the deep side, and I like how he plays with his facial expressions which really added impact to his overall performance.

KIM JONGHYUN

His flow was really clean and the amount of power he gives on the parts he stresses increases the impact of the lines delivered. He’s adding his emotions and his force is in a form of a growl which really complements the feel of the song. You can really tell he’s a performer based on his technique and presence itself, and he’s rapping like he means it. He did justice to his parts so clap clap

JANG MOONBOK

His rapping style isn’t really my cup of tea, but I do recognize that his voice is really unique – it just takes me time to get used to, and I couldn’t help but feel like it didn’t fit the feel of the song. His rap was very emotional, but I think he added too much emotion in it that it became a little unclear and shaky. The way he spits out the words make it hanging and dragging towards the end, and it would have sounded much better if he the flow was smoother.

KIM TAEMIN

So, here’s another guy who never gave me the impression of a rapper before, but his performance here showed that he really is – his flow was great, I just wish he gave more stress and emphasis on some phrases but overall, even if he only had a small part, he slayed it. I like how clearly he delivered his lines, and I literally wanted to see more from him because I can tell he has more in store, to add to his impact.

Boys and Girls by ZICO

IM YOUNGMIN

He has natural swag in how he delivers his lines and this really proves that he’s a good rapper. The moment he forgot his lyrics was a pity tho – his flow was already great but it abruptly cut it. His second rap part was better, I like his swag yet very calm approach to it and despite it being a hyper song, he was stable all throughout. Also, props to him for making it up for his mistake and confidently continuing!

KIM DONGHYUN

First and foremost, his voice really screams “vocalist” and I never expected him to rap well so I was quite shook by his performance. He had a good flow and his words were clear – he pulled off his part well with a good amount of swag. Because of the nature of the song, it was understandable that they would run out of breath but it resulted to sounding like he was eating his words as he rapped. Nonetheless, he was good at playing with the camera (he reminds me of jinyoung) and he looked like he was enjoying the performance as well.

KIM DONGBIN

I can tell he isn’t much of a rapper yet but I commend his effort - with a little more training he would improve so much! He was struggling a bit to keep up with the beat, but he somehow managed to let his lyrics flow smooth enough – maybe a little improvement on the enunciation and his delivery because it was more like he was speaking than rapping. He had great energy and seriously added the “cute” factor to the performance. I

RAP POSITION FINAL EVALUATION

RAP POSITION WINNER: KIM JONGHYUN

I’m not really a rap expert so my review is not very technical this time, and mostly based on my preference in raps. Well, every rapper has his own rapping style, right? And everyone did an amazing job! The songs they all performed were of different feels, so there was quite a variety in them as I reviewed and I enjoyed them all.

I have one more position evaluation review to go (and hopefully I’d finish it fast), so stay tuned!
