「 SEUL THE SLEUTH 」Dance Position Evaluation: a Produce 101 S2 Review

MOVES LIKE JAGGER—lolwhut

My headings are getting more nonsensical every blogpost /facepalms/. So anyway, with both the vocal and rap position evaluation reviews done, all there’s left is the dance position review and to be honest, I purposely made it last because scoring this is so difficult. Unlike the other two where I evaluated each member of the team based on individual performance and execution, this review will be reviewing the group performance as a whole – you can’t really judge dance choreography without looking at the whole thing, right?

So with that being said, this review will not be numerical or score-based at all, thus there will be no criteria. This will most likely be comments on their choreography and movement executions, and for each group, I would choose the member who stood out the most to me. By the end of this review, I would also choose which of the dance performances I think was the best and also the winner for dance position.

Without further ado, let’s get on with the review~

RIGHT ROUND

The song itself is already energetic, so you would really expect quite something strong in the performance. I liked the fact that they went for a swag and cute appeal, other than focusing so much on the strong and they also managed to give that poppy vibe which the song was screaming. Incorporation of the acrobatic moves were really good and at the right times, too plus some b-boy movements which added to the impact to their performance.

I expected the hand formation movement to be the highlight of the song (and I think it was supposed to be) but the execution seemed off (and mnet’s editing didn’t do justice to it) and had probably half-second lapses in their synchronization so more emphasis and power on that part would’ve made it awesome.

They already have the feel for the performance but some parts looked unclean and the synchronization was off. They were slowly building-up the power of their moves towards the end, so I was quite expecting some good foot shuffling and all so I was a bit disappointed when there was none, and maybe due to that the impact I felt was a bit low.

RIGHT ROUND PICK: Yeo Hwanwung

He was the center for their performance and I could say that they really chose well. His facial expressions looked so nice and his execution of the movements was clean and on-point. Hwanung really stood out for me here.

SHAPE OF YOU

/span>

The smirk at the beginning was gold – it fitted the appeal so well even with that little gesture. For a song that is more on the laid back side, their choreography looked so nice and complex – it gave the right amount of snappy and y, going from slow to fast-paced and it was able to show their versatility so well. Each member had a time to shine which they seamlessly arranged within their formations. I highly commend Park Sungwoo for his improvement here, though I’d want to see more emphasis in his movements during the slow-paced parts, he did a really great job at the fast-paced parts.

I completely love the change in tempo and how they incorporated the hankies – it gave that y appeal to it. The scorpion dance was definitely the highlight of their performance and it was perfectly executed (even though the editing done on it looked off).

SHAPE OF YOU PICK: Noh Taehyun

He’s the center and leader of the team, and despite his small stature (I believe the appeal of something y would look fairly better on people with a taller build), he pulled it off so well, you can’t help but be hooked with his subtle smirks – in short, he slayed.

Also, I would like to mention Kim Taedong because the way he executes his movements are just so smooth plus his ending pose with a hand in his pocket looked so cool.

POP

Can I just say thank you to mnet for including nsync?? My heart is <3

The starting movement during the disc-turning sound (idk what to call it) at the beginning was quite unexpected and if it was meant to catch the audience’s attention, it definitely worked on me. Starting with the sitting positions and dramatizing the beginning flowing towards the chorus had really good build-up in the choreography and it got me hooked. At the start, there were some parts where their footwork was a bit unsynchronized but after that, their foot shuffling and movements were really nice to look at.

They went for a youthful, cute and hyper theme, which suited them really well and for some reason it reminded me of High School Musical (it really just occurred to me hahaha). Their hyper-ness was so adorable – they were really poppy and it fitted the song so well. If I must pinpoint one part I can complain about, maybe just a cleaner execution of the flying thingy, but of course they did so well already so it’s a tiny detail. And oh, the abs-flashing moment was unnecessary (how many times have I said this on my reviews already?), the collar bone thingy was slightly acceptable, but the abs one was just meh.

POP PICK: Lee Insoo

Right from the beginning, or more precisely, the refrain part before the chorus where he was in the middle, he caught my attention. His moves were really snappy and powerful, and they were executed cleanly and it looked so smooth.

GET UGLY

Their beginning looked really good. I like how their choreography looked complex yet had a laid-back feel to it and they incorporated B-boy moves in it, too. Their movements were really snappy and it really looked like their talents were at par with each other. I loved that silenced skit during Daniel’s part – it built good momentum and it did not disappoint because the move right after was great.

I don’t really have much to say other than it looked clean and all, so I’m gonna list down things I found nice at some part of the performance. The heart jump in the middle looked cute (and unexpected). That “WOOHH” by Ong the dork got me laughing, and whoever did the split at the side, thumbs up for him.

GET UGLY PICK: Kim Samuel

Samuel really stood out for me for the reason that you really see that it’s his element. The way he moves just shows how much he understands the vibe of the song and he gives it the right feel.

DANCE POSITION EVALUATION

All four dances were awesome and they each have a different feel in them that just shows the versatility of the trainees participating. Among the four, the dance performance which was most memorable for me would be Shape Of You. It was classy and had great impact – it had this unique feel to it, and the overall execution was really good. Also, for the winner for dance position, I would have to say it’s undoubtedly Noh Taehyun. His dancing was definitely at a high level and given that he showed krumping in episode 1, I really did not expect him to dance something so smoothly and gracefully, so I commend his versatility.

SEUL’S PICK – BEST CHOREOGRAPHY: Shape Of You

DANCE POSITION WINNER: Noh Taehyun

So this should be the end of my second review series, but I know that with the coming episodes, I’d still have more to review. See you then!

What do you think of the performances?
