NAME:  Jeong Yisang

BIRTHDATE:  15/03/1998 (22 in 2020)

BIRTHPLACE:  Seoul, SK

HOMETOWN:  Seoul, SK

LANGUAGE(S) SPOKEN:

→ Korean ⋮ Mothertongue, of course he speaks fluent Korean.
→ English ⋮ Thanks to studying at SOPA and also having a deeper interest in Jazz, Yisang actually practiced English very hard and does manage to speak and sing in English very well.

HEIGHT & WEIGHT:  177cm & 66kgs

FACE CLAIM:  Hyun to da Sik! It's Hyunsik!
BACK UP FACE CLAIM:  Hm... maybe... or maybe not... let's see... Ze:A's Hyungsik!

APPEARANCE & STYLE:

You enter the room, a bunch of trainees sitting in a row, each of them looking super stressed and serious. And then there is that one person on the very end of the row, having that stupid grin on his face because he can't take the whole situation seriously. That stupid grin/smile is the trademark of Jeong Yisang, that thing that will tell you that it's him who you see right there, ruining the picture of seriousness in the idol industry.

Jeong Yisang is a person that is of artificial beauty. New nose, new jar, new lips, new teeth. Even his skin had to undergo certain chemical treatments to look as even as it does now. The only thing in Yisang's face that stayed the same are his eyes. Eyes that a classmate once told him looked 'friendly'. Probably the only compliment he ever got for his looks and the reason he kept his eyes the way they always were.

With 177cm Yisang's neither too small, nor very tall. He's the average guy that bulked up to impress. And who dresses in very hip-hopish clothes to the extent that some look at him and shake their heads because it goes dangerously much into the direction of a hip hop wannabe. Caps and beanies are his favorite accessories to combine to his beloved leather jacket. He's not restraining from adding masses of necklaces, rings or wrist bands however. Cheap one to top it. A poor soul like Yisang doesn't have money for high-class brand clothes or anything else than cheap costume jewelry.

Personality

Yisang
[i-saŋ]
kor. (noun) abnormality, disorder, (adjective) weird, bizarre, strange, odd, peculiar

person
1. a certain person that is overly chaotic.
2. a certain person that is very lazy.
3. a certain person that is (easy-) going (downhill) with his head up.
4. a certain person that is socially weird.
5. a certain person that is a trainee at Fringe Ent.

Ask a person about Jeong Yisang and the chances will be very high that the answer will include one of the above mentioned things. Yes, just like his name, Yisang is a very extraordinary fellow. He's the dude that stands in the corner of the room and strikes everyone's attention because of his stupid smile... and because of the trace of chaos he leaves behind him. If there's something that he's a pro at, then it's accidentally destroying stuff, forgetting stuff and causing one mess after another. The epitome of clumsiness even manages to break things by only touching them slightly and so it's a logical result that people tend to avoid him touching their stuff. Nobody wants their stuff broken. Or lost. Or both.

With the trait of being overly chaotic, it's not much of a surprise that Yisang isn't able to get his act together and actually live like a decent human being. He's just simply unable to get things done on his own, living very much in his own world that doesn't consist what he'd call 'hard labor work'. Only if things happen on their own or other people make decisions for him, he's actually achieving something. It's not that he's lazy in making plans. He's just very bad at putting them into action. His mind? Ambitious. His body? Not so much. At first glance this might totally look like he's lazy when in fact it's the fear of failing that paralyzes him. Too scared of seeing his plans, ideas and dreams shatter in front of his eyes, he's hesitant in acting. This insecurity leads to Yisang choosing comfily being lazy over reaching for the stars. Yisang isn't one to take failures kindly. Openly failing often leads to him falling into a deep hole of self-destructive criticism.

The paradox other side of his personality coin is that if he wants to do stuff he needs to do it straight, otherwise he'll loose his motivation, gets too scared to act or ends up telling himself he'd do it next week... and then remembers that he said that already two years ago. Whenever Yisang decides on doing stuff, he's rushing things a lot. Not seldomly he pisses off others with his pushiness when just two days ago they've been complaining about him not moving his for a single inch. And even when he finally moves and works on things... never allow him to stop because you'll have to make him start working again and he'll be in the exact same state as before he began the whole act. But why is he even rushing on things if he'll struggle constantly continuing doing them? Well, chances are high that otherwise he simply forgets about the ideas that a minute ago he thought are the sensation of the year. Oh yeah, he forgets about way too many things. No matter if important or absolutely unnecessary. But everything's fine as long as he knows about the stuff he dedicates his life sincerely to and doesn't forget about them. Stuff like his pure love for his acting goddess Yeonhee. Talking about Yeonhee... where did he put his phone again? He needs to check on her instagram and snapchat story. Oh, this guy has troubles in setting his priorities right.

You might think that a person like Yisang must be very emotional and maybe even  quick-tempered. Don't be led astray, Yisang is a very easy-going person. He often takes things as they come and it takes a lot to actually make him loose his temper . Anger or annoyance are emotions he rarely shows to others because he manages to keep his mind cool and focused. No matter how bad things go, he most of the time can laugh it away, staying as cheerful as always. Yet, if there's actually something that kicks him out of this light-hearted mood, he's going to be stuck in a hole of his deepest nightmares. To Yisang it's either being overly joyous or deadly depressed. If he yells at you then it's because his desperation and frustration are results of deep- depressions and him once again questioning what his life is all about and if he's even worth existing.

What does an usually easy-going and cheerful person like Yisang miss in his life? One big issue: Friends. As a person that never really was correctly calibrated to function around other human beings, he doesn't know how to interact with others. There is no such thing like being afraid of approaching people. He does approach others easily. He just doesn't manage to keep them around for too long as most people consider him... peculiar. Of all the Fringe trainees, Yisang might be the one that they call 'Alien'. The topics he wants to talk about are mostly very single-edged, his words aren't filtered, he often turns out to be unintentionally savage and the random comments that he makes and his more than questionable humor are things that annoy and quench fellow trainees. Sarcasm, irony and puns are things he doesn't understand and he doesn't even know how to keep a conversation running if he's facing small talk. What is small talk even?! Whenever Yisang's mouth opens, it's not certain if he really thought about what he'd say and his actions are only emphasising that he in reality might be a headless chicken that doesn't know where it's running to.

Yisang never learned how to be considerate of others and therefore is unintentionally egoistic at times. He's often trying to impress others with the skills he acquired so far, not knowing where to stop, even when his opponents are better than him and also isn't able to be a helpful member of a team or group because he's automatically turning the whole project into a one-man show, pushing himself into the center (may it be in good or bad situations). All he really wants to achieve by doing this is gaining a little bit of aknowledgment. Like a little puppy he waits for others to praise him, he's even needy for recognition. He just doesn't know yet how to differentiate bad from good recognition. All the need for this probably originates from deep insecurity and a deeply anchored inferiority complex.

GENERAL BG:

Born as a rather unlucky, in other words ugly, representative of his kind Yisang always had to fight with the superficial society that came to be named contemporary Korea. From the cradle he had to endure lots of bullying for weird teeth, bulky lips, a very apparent underbite, bad skin and a crooked nose. To top it all he was rather small and chubby, nothing like those beautiful idols. And kids are so cruel. Too cruel, actually. Being called names like "face", "Chubs", "Monster", "Gollum" or "The Hunchback of Notre Damme" left its marks on young Yisang and just like his name, he turned into a completely awkward and weird person that stayed alone for most of the time, primarily to avoid getting more beatings for looking the way he did. It wasn't only the other kids. Also the way neighbors or also other adults, such as the kids' parents, were looking at him made him feel so ashamed of himself that Yisang didn't feel like leaving the house anymore.

Yisang blamed his parents for the way he looked. He cried, he cursed at them, he was yelling bewilderdly because he felt wronged by being born to those parents who made him look so ugly. "I wish I was born to other parents! I just want to die because I look like this! You should have thought about me too when you decided to have a kid! Look at my face! LOOK AT ME!" It broke their hearts and also turned them angry, of course. Yisang was the best that ever happened to them. They did not have much, Yisang's father owning a little convenience store and his mother part-time working as a cleaning lady so they could afford a home and come up for Yisang's education expenses. And yet he was standing in front of them, telling them he wanted to die because they made him ugly. Overall, despite the anger and sadness, what they felt most was guilt. Because neither of them had good looks and even they had to admit that their child was... ugly.

The way he looked, Yisang never managed to make a lot of friends. He made a few, also social outcasts that either were nerdy, dirt poor or like Yisang, very ugly. He never learned how to interact correctly with other people, and especially during this time of his life he rather not interacted with others, scared of being judged priorly as the ugly kid. But one companion he found who never left his side: Music. It was the moment he developed the world of music in which he for the first time felt comfortable. He loved the sound of pianos and his parents, feeling forever guilty, scraped together every single Won they had to let Yisang take piano lessons. And that's where his life finally turned to the better. At least for him.

With the piano, the whole music passion flooded his life. And like the Tsunami Wave, it left nothing there of his former life. Except for his ugliness, of course. But he could live with it as long as he had his friend, the piano. The piano didn't stay alone for too long, though. The voice followed soon. Yisang has always been blessed with a beautiful, low voice and it didn't take him long to go beg his parents to send him to a music school very soon. They couldn't afford it but seeing their child so happy, they decided to make a sacrifice and enable him to attend SOPA when he graduated from Middle School. They sold their appartment and moved into a way smaller one so they could pay the school fees.

Life at SOPA wasn't like Yisang had expected, nevertheless. The others all were looking more than just simply pretty or handsome. With a load of them being idols in the making Yisang stood out once more like a sore thumb. He did not have the looks and even his skills were lacking next to the others who either were able to go back to their entertainment additional training or go to Hakwons after school because their parents could afford it. He could neither beat the trainees, nor could he beat the classical students. It was a mess. And he was still ugly. So, back again he was complaining to his parents and pressuring to enable him one more thing: Plastic Surgery. At that point he went completely insane, his parents just shook their heads and told him to stop this nonsense but Yisang wouldn't listen and told them if they didn't come up for the plastic surgery, he'd work himself to get the money. And that was exactly what he did.

As he had a lot more time on his hands than the other SOPA students because his family had no money, he started working at a coffee shop and carefully saved the money he earned during his time as a high-schooler. Yes, his grades suffered from it. But it wasn't as if he had ever had the chance to be as good as the others anyway, so he didn't feel too bad about slacking off. His parents also tried to get some money together, watching how their son was working himself to the bones to get himself a prettier face, even starving himself to save his lunch money (and loose some weight). It took him three years and a few months after graduation to get the money together, but he finally managed to get his faced fixed when his parents agreed on supporting him and even took up a loan for the surgery expenses.

One more year it took him to completely recover from the surgery. Yisang had gone through endless pain, pain that had made him wish to die on the spot but with the new jar, the now nice lips, perfect teeth, a decent looking nose and clearer skin, he finally was able to look into a mirror and cry... because he felt like finally being born. After undergoing plastic surgery and starving himself for the entire time during High School so he would fit into Korean beauty standards, Yisang walked through the streets of Seoul and did not feel like he didn't belong there, that he didn't even deserve to breathe. He felt confident. Like a swan that finally recognized its beauty.

It was also during that time that Yisang watched DoD, a show in which guys like him who did not have another chance in becoming an idol and make something out of themselves participated... but it wasn't the guys who caught his attention. It was the pretty MC, Yeonhee. And BOOM! He finally found something that was worth working for. Yeonhee. Being an idol.

TRAINEE LIFE:

Yisang auditioned for Fringe Ent in 2018. He got in on first try and that actually was a good thing because he wouldn't have auditioned a second time, too scared that he'd fail again. Trainee life was hard on everyone but easy-going as Yisang is, he never fully tried out. Sure, he did one or two things very thoroughly. Like working out to bulk up and differentiate himself from all the pretty flower boys because he knew that even with his new face he would never be able to compete with them. He wanted to compete with them... he even begged his parents for more plastic surgery but they told him they could not afford it over and over again and even Fringe told him to stop and instead focus on his lack in dancing. Yisang was very disgruntled by this and it didn't help at all that those trainees who knew he underwent plastic surgery suddenly started shaming him for it. Yisang felt betrayed. When he was all natural and ugly people were shaming him. And even know when he finally looked good, people still were shaming him. Especially those who underwent cosmetic surgery themselves! This was NOT fair!

His looks never were his main reason to struggle during his trainee time, still. What really bothered him the entire time was the fear of failing. The fear that his dream might shatter, that everything he imagined his life to be would turn out to be a childish illusion and he'd end up with no idea what to do with life and how to deal with the aftermath of failing. There never had been a Plan B. Plan A hadn't really been a plan at all after all...

...oh... and not to mention Yisang's still on-going mission of exploring the world of social interactions. He's an idiot. Don't expect too much of him.

Relationships

FAMILY SITUATION:

Yisang and his parents have a very... troubled relationship. He never apologized for blaming his parents for his ugliness as he still thinks that it really is their fault and they in return still feel very hurt about it, yet try to support him as compensation for what he had to go through during his childhood. Unfortunately he takes the compensation for granted and pushes his parents to support him more, pay for more and enable him to somehow compete with the richer kids. He gets especially pushy whenever he sees other enjoying privileges of rich parents and once more blames his parents for having a child when they obviously can't afford it.

OTHER RELATIONSHIPS:

» The Others | Fellow trainees

Not that he doesn't like them. He does! He likes almost everyone. But they don't seem to like him that much. Most of them at least does not seem to think too fondly of him.

» The Lucky Dudes | Atlas

In all honesty, he didn't really follow Atlas after they debuted. He just watched DoD for Yeonhee and only Yeonhee. For some reason he can remember everything from the show, though. He might not know what happened to them after debut but if you want to know things about DoD and facts about the Atlas members from there, Yisang's a walking encyclopedia.

» Hello Superiors| Fringe staffs

They're not as weirded out by Yisang as his fellow trainees that constantly have to deal with him and are exposed to the weirdness level he provides them with but even the staffs of Fringe find him weird. Or stupid. You choose.

trivia

- he doesn't like when other people touch him

- he's emotionally indigested and is at a big loss when it comes to showing affection to others (except for Yeonhee, he loves Yeonhee, Yeonhee's his life, he'd totally kill for her! But also maybe the fact of her being unreachable is why he chose her to be his ideal woman)

- he likes to call himself the Korean Paganini of K-Pop whenever he suffers another flight of fancy after getting praised

- always looses his phone and is on a constant search for it

- chances are 99% that he's going to be late AGAIN

- he doesn't have a favorite food because he hates thinking about food.
He associates enjoying food a lot with his overweight from his childhood days.

evaluation

⟪ How long have you been a trainee? ⟫

"Almost two years, I think.", Yisang answers and blinks at the interviewer who waits for more to come but the trainee just further blinks at him until he notices that he's supposed to talk more. He doesn't do, though. Instead the corners of his lips quirk up and his eyes form crescends. Yes, the stupid smile is all over his face.

⟪ What made you want to become an idol? Why Fringe? ⟫

"DoD inspired me.", he says and suddenly his whole body tenses up. He must think of something very beautiful... in fact he thinks of Yeonhee. "I thought about what it would be like to be the one standing on that stage next to Yeonhee and I really liked the idea." The grin on his face grows even wider. "Oh... and I always wanted to become a musician, that's why I attended SOPA. Soooo... yupp. Idol. Music. Fringe, because this is the place where my desire to be an idol was born."

⟪ What do you consider your best attributes? ⟫

"Do you mean by skills? Then it's my voice and my ability to play piano." It's obvious that he has no idea that charisma and a great personality can be considered as one of those attributes as well. The interviewer doesn't seem like hinting at it so Yisang just sticks with that answer.

⟪ What do you consider your weaknesses?⟫

"Dancing." Again Yisang focuses on the skill areas only but to the interviewer his lacking charisma doesn't go unnoticed.

⟪ How do you feel about the other trainees? ⟫

At this Yisang struggles finding an answer. "Ehh...", he tries but can't find the right words. "I don't think I'm in the position to judge others. They're like me. So we come in a whole but I'd not talk about the collective without including judging myself in that scenario." He suddenly looks very uncomfortable. Because even though he things they're all of the same kind, he wants to stand out so badly. But positively. He wants to be one of them. Just a lot better.

⟪ Why should we choose you for our future project group? ⟫

"I'm planning to become the Korean Paganini of K-Pop. Dream high, get higher. That thought is nice, isn't it?" It doesn't include him actually trying to get that far, he knows. It's one of the rare times he doesn't mention that dreaming doesn't neccesarily mean also really trying to achieve that certain dream. But on the other hand... he just kept his mouth shot to reach this one goal. It suddenly makes sense in his head and Yisang considers this thought as acting pro idoldom. Yes, he just really did something to get closer to his dream of debuting. And marrying Yeonhee. Of course, marrying Yeonhee.

skills

TALENT TWIN:  HYUN TO DA SIK! -> You asked for it. DUH.

STRENGTHS:  Yisang's strongest skill is, obviously, singing. He has a very low voice but can hit even high registers and he can also vary between a lot of different genres. Yes, this can even rap if he wants to and as long as it's the kind of sing-rap that a lot of idols do, he knows technique and has a very nice flow in both singing and rapping. He's also a born virtuoso which means he's very good in improvising. If you give him some space in a song, he's totally gonna slay it. But also he'll probably sing anyone else into the ground... which is not that great if he's doing it to actual teammates. His skillset also includes the ability to play the piano. He loves the piano. Really. A lot.

WEAKNESSES:  Despite being blessed with the beautiful voice he owns and the passion for music and his dear lover, the piano, Yisang struggles a lot with the part in which he has to dance. He's very clumsy and constantly stumbles over his own feet when trying to dance and oh yeah his charisma on screen instantly turns into the one of a mashed potato the moment he closes his singing mouth to speak. He's not very good at acting like a normal human being and often unintentionally causes (secondhand) embarrassment for himself and all the other Fringe trainees. Team work isn't his forte and he'll have big difficulties in taking himself a little back. It's not that he's messing with harmonies. He's good in all this stuff. But he's struggling in giving others some space and time to shine. Yes, he's that that is going to take away the spotlight with his way too soothing voice that is basically ping your emotional dress to pull it down. Or he's taking all the spotlight because he runs into everyone else during a dance performance and is the reason for a giant human pile of crashed trainees.
His biggest weakness however is to actually start working on his weaknesses. He just can't figure out how to get his up. He knows he's just lucky for having studied at SOPA and being blessed with a nice voice, otherwise he'd never made it into Fringe.

INTERACTIOS/STORY/W/E:

To be all honest... Yisang doesn't even know Yeonhee in person. But seeing her on TV made him swoon so much over her, someone had to hand this child a paper bag so he could breathe into it. Yes, he's a fanboy and he'll fite you if you ever dare to insult his goddess (but he'd also fight you if you're a fan too because then you're probably a rival)! Also, he's not getting any of the 2Yeon ! Because Yeonhee is his goddess and Yeonin was fslgjfhdskgjfdhsbgkjsdfhbg. No, okay, he was alright. But Yisang gets mad every time he has to hear about the 2Yeon ship.
