prologue : Jaeho is a prime exemple of someone who has lived through a lot of grief for a perfect life he will never have. That will not stop him from trying to attain it nonetheless. He sees love the way he sees the stars, they guide him to a better path but they are so far away... He'll try to study the stars because he can't study love. Because he desesperately needs light back in his life. He can try to be the light, but Jaeho stays blind to the most basics truths. He says he loves me but he could love anyone. I'm his bestfriend, I know him best and he doesn't know himself at all. He is the nicest and kindest person I have met, a bittersweet feeling when you understand what he has been through. Maybe those who think they have nothing feel like they owe it to the world to give everything.

Most outsiders would say that with his serious expression, his many piercings in his ears and his tattoos, he looks like a gangster. He must be the kind of scary person that enjoy solitude and barely smiles. He must stay outside late, go to every party and pick up random girls on the street. For sure he doesn't care about others and if he bumps into you, he'll make you apologixe for it. However, spending a little bit of time with him, even if it's just a few minutes will thoroughly shatter that first impression.

Jaeho is a discreet person and will always be very polite to people he does not know well. This is what causes the misunderstanding. But the truth is that Jaeho is a bright and smiling kid-like individual who sees the world in a very positive manner. He is cheerful and often has a big smile plastered on his face. He likes to joke and have fun and generally enjoys being surrounded by people. Jaeho is drawn to mature people who are often considered the "parents" of the group. That might be because he feels like he never really had someone to rely on like that.

Jaeho does his best to go toward people. He is shy when it comes to strangers and has trouble opening up, but he is not the cold person he appears to be. His cheeks are often reddened by the embarassement of thinking he said the wrong thing. He oftens looks away shyly. It's rather cute, really. He is a purehearted person who rarely sees the double meaning of things. Instead, he tends to understand things literally which can lead to misunderstandings. Jaeho is very expressive and you can clearly see what he is thinking on his face as clear as if it was written with a marker. Not very skilled at lying to other (ironically very skilled at lying to himself) jaeho will tend to keep silent whenever there is something he does not want to say. This contrasts his usually talkative personality that can almost seem chirpy at times.

A hardworking individual, jaeho knows he will need to go a long way to get everything he might want. He is not afraid of putting the effort. In fact, he is so possitive he believes that as long as he works hard, he will succeed. Whenever something bad happens and Jaeho feels bad, he quickly moves on, blind to the fact that he is not properly facing his emotions and that he can't keep them all bottled up inside like this. One day, he will explode.

Jaeho enjoys helping because he is kind, but also because he tends to evaluate his own worth through other people. He enjoys the feeling of validation and thrive to be accepted in any way shape or form. Growing up in a family where love wasn't always present, he had to make up for it and looked for it elsewhere. Because of that, he will tend to keep very close friends that often act as a surrogate family to him.

a smart person, jaeho is fascinated with the stars and dreams of being an astrophysicist. For now, he studies physics and can do unbelievable calculations in his head as easily as breathing. He has always found numbers to be much easier to understand than other humans.

Jaeho tries to live every day as cheerfully as he can. Forget the bad, quickly. Make space for the good that is to come. However, Jaeho cannot say he is truly happy. He feels alone and worthless most of the time so he tries hard to gain validation from others, which in exchange only make him more tired and he feels even more useless. It's a vicious circle that he does not know how to escape. He can play the happy person but deep down, that is not true. What is happy about coming home to a house that doesn't even feel like home. When his parents fight everyday now and he is always gone and they don't even seem to care about him... He can care about others, but who will care about him?

9 - Jaeho had a nightmare and slowly exits his room. It's dark everywhere, but he sees light under his parents door. He wants to go to them, but he knows they will get angry that he is not sleeping yet. Slowly, he makes his way to his older sister's room. Jaekyung is also up, studying for a high school test, but she still takes the time to hold him and pat his back. She puts him to sleep in her bed and Jaeho falls asleep to the sound of pencils scratching on papers and the pages of notebook being flipped through. Jaeho is thankful he has his sister.
12 - Jaeho is spending the afternoon at kim nahyun's place. She's been his friend since kindergarten and their house is on the same block as his. nahyun's a bit of an airhead so he is helping her with her math homework. His parents invite him to dinner to thank him and he accepts. nahyun's house is always warm and cozy. Sometimes, he sees her parents kiss each other. He didn't know parents could do that. His don't. Jaeho likes it here. He wishes nahyun's parents could adopt him, but he doesn't want to leave Jaekyung alone.
13 - His parents are fighting again. He's certain that it is because he didn't have good grades like Jaekyung but she sits next to him on the bed and tell him everything will be alright. They sit together in the dark while the tempest is raging downstairs, until Jaekyung places a blanket over their head and turns on a flashlight. They have their own fort, now, and they are safe from the storm.
15 - Jaeho sneaked over to nahyun's house during the evening because his parents were fighting. That'S when he hears the ambulance. He rushes to his house, sure that someone got hurt this time. He doesn't even need to open the door as it is wide open already. His mother is weeping in a corner, his father is talking with a paramedic and he has blood on his shirt. That's when he sees it. His sister is on the ground, in a small pool of blood and she isn't moving. All around her, broken plates. The ride to the hospital is in perfect silence. five hours later, Jaekyung is out of surgery with stiches in her hand and on her forehead and fortunately no more slivers of broken ceramic in her body. His parents begin fighting in the hospital about whose fault it is that their daughter was hurt. When Jaeho turns to Jaekyung, he realizes something has changed in his sister.
16 - Jaekyung has had enough. She is done making excuses and has decided to accept a mariage proposal from a coworker who will be moving to America. His sister is leaving. love is leaving the house. Jaeho is alone.
18 - Jaeho has confessed to nahyun for the third time this year, but nahyun still refuses. "i am not your sister", nahyun said and Jaeho has trouble understanding how that is relevant. He's just tired of being alone.
19 - Jaeho got into a physics program. His parents believe he should have gone pre-med, but Jaeho dislikes hospitals. He is feeling alone so he puts everything he has into studying. He doesn't quite know what he will do with a physics major, but he likes how simple and clear numbers are, unlike people.
20 - nahyun got herself a boyfriend and Jaeho is devastated. That night, he can hear his parents fighting again. He turns on a light under his blanket, but it just doesn't feel the same when he is alone. Usually, he would go to Nahyun's but now he can't even do that anymore. This time, he doesn't even has his part-time job to run to so he turns off the light and pretend nothing is happening.
21 - Mr.Hwang has noticed Jaeho doesn't sleep well. He is also the guidance counsellor and he knows of Jaeho's situation. His sister was a student of his some time ago and she told him of her life. That is why mr. Hwang has been strangely interested in Jaeho. "You don't have to be miserable," mr. Hwang says. I know a place where you will be happy." Jaeho barely remembers what happiness is. So he accepts.
lifestyle : Jaeho is still living with his parents, but he is decided to leave. Even if he doesn't get the spot mr. Hwang talked about, by the end of next week he will be gone. He is done living in a toxic environment. He's been working part time at a convenience store for a while. At first, it was simply to have an excuse not to be home, but it did allow him to save some money. He will take student loans if he can't make it every month, but he refuses to depend on his parents money anymore. Jaekyung knew she had to leave and now that there is nothing for him anymore, he shall leave to. He doesn't have many friends, but those he has are really good friends. He still talks to Nahyun. He's still madly in love with her, but he understands that she has her life and that she chose someone else. Maybe she's right, maybe he does see his sister in her and that is not fair to her. Leaving is definitely the right decision. He has good grades, maths come easy to him. He is minoring in biology because his sister studied it. It feels kinda sad to him that he is chasing the shadow of the only person who has loved him. He doesn't really have a lot of friends but stays friendly to the few people who talk to him in classes. He missed his chance to make friends because he had work during student orientation day. If anyone asks for his help, he is always more than happy to lend a hand. Too bad most people don't get close to him because they think he looks scary with his slanted eyes.
trivia :
likes - all the kpop girlgroups. He really enjoys music that was probably not made with him as a target audience. He doesn't care that people know that about him and he will not be stopped when he is singing his favorite red velvet song.
dislikes - He has a strange relationship with darkness. He does not like it, but will not willingly chose to escape it. He just prefers when the lights are on, that all.
dislikes - Biology. Oh, really, it's not made for him. So many systems and names of proteins, enzymes, processes and all that. he just likes number so much more than biology. Why is it even his minor.
likes - furry animals like cats, dogs, hamsters and platypus, why not. HE'S very good with animals but doesn't own a pet because he doesn't have time to take care of one.
habit - He is not a picky eater at all and does have food he likes better than some, but he will never demand particular food.
habit - will eat everything in a bowl and never or barely uses plates. go figure.
dislikes - hospitals. The smell, the amouth of people, the whiteness... It all feels too sanitized and he doesn't like it. University or school's infirmary is fine with him, though.
Fact - Has two tattoos, one on his forearm and one on his shoulder. The stars is close to his heart and represents his sister. he had it done after she left. The planets just represents what he likes. He included pluto because he feels bad for plut and wants pluto to feel included in the group. he is against planet-discrimination.
fact - He has two piercing on each of his earlobes, plus one on the upper part of his left ears for five in total.
Habit - Because of his piercing, he sleeps on his right side.
hobbies - when he has nothing to do, he plays MOBA video games.
likes - he enjoys camping and does own equipement. He would be delighted to go with a friend if possible, because Nahyun hates camping.
Fact - Jaekyung is 7 and a half year older than Jaeho.

— thank you so much for inviting me yourself. I didn't expect someone to actually notice, but you did and it means a lot to me that you would want to help. (runs his fingers through his hair and pull at the strands that stick out of place too much before stopping and staring at mr. hwang, a sigh escaping his lips.) It's just as you said, I don't have to live the way I do and I've honestly reached the end of the rope. It's become too difficult to stay. And so, I am looking for a new beginning. (looks around hopeful at the room he is in)

(mr. hwang sips his tea quietly, eyes staring at the curtains of the living room, dancing in the spring breeze. after a minute or two, Jaeho calls out to him, startling him.)
...oh, i am sorry, my child. WHERE DID I- ah, Would you mind describing a typical day in your life?
— I'm rather quiet. I promise to pay my rent on time. I have most of my classes in the morning so I should be out of here early. If I have time, I might grab a breakfast to go. (lifts eyes up to the ceiling, trying to recall his usual schedule) Then after my classes I usually stay at the university library to study a little. After that, I come back home, shower and go to my part-time job at the convenience store. I mostly have night shifts. Then I come back home, sleep until the next day and start over again. (eyes widen) As of food, I just eat whenever I have the time. (tilts his head on the side and shrug) On the weekend, if possible, I would like to be able to hang with other people in the house and do fun things. Maybe we can plan barbeques on the rooftop, it seems pretty nice. (smiles)

— I might not be here that much, coming here late at night and leaving early in the morning, so I don't mind living alone. (overthinks this and gets confused) Although maybe it's a good thing that I won't be here a lot during the week and I might as well share a room with someone else? I don't actually mind... (he drags the last word and the pause before going silent, his mind seemingly lost in an ancient memory)

— I'm not really scared or anything. I just hope everyone will be nice and give me a chance. (raises eyebrows as if asking a question)
(he chuckles, emptying his cup of tea, an amused look on his face as he musters Jaeho for a few seconds.)
