everyone at aejung prep knows who seul is. the student president, the co-editor-in-chief of the grapevine, the popular yet nice girl, and most importantly, the granddaughter of sangdan group's ceo, jo yongsoo. sangdan, a group involved in construction, food, energy, hospitality and shopping, is a name well known throughout korea. the coffee you're drinking? sangdan. the mall you're at? sangdan. the hospital where you're visiting your grandma? sangdan. it's a wonder how someone of the prestigious jo family of sangdan isn't stuck-up and rude. here's the brief answer: seul's not really part of it. adopted at age seven and being presented as the "secret granddaughter" when she was age ten, seul is nothing but determined to shake off her humble beginnings and claw her way to the top.

frankly, seul is a manipulative, calculative and materialistic . with a jaded view on the world, she will stop at nothing to climb the rungs to reach the top and she has no qualms with abandoning the people who have supported her. to make hersef more likeable, she puts up the nice front, and is always agreeing to whatever chaeyeon is ranting about just so she can get on her good side. she just keeps in her thoughts and opinions as she lives her life under intense peer influence. she sees everyone around her as steps to success and money and is fine with manipulating people into helping her. one minute she'd be softly teaching you how to finish the equation and as soon as you say thanks and leaves, her smile drops, her face goes dark and she starts thinking oh my god, how dumb can you be? even if she hates you, she'd never show it, lending money to you, letting you copy her homework, making you think she's your friend. you'd think that some people would have looked past her incredibly fake facade by now, but pretty much everyone genuinely likes her and seul finds the staggering number extremely amusing. there's no denying that seul is a good actress and even if you think that she cares for you, if you get kidnapped and the kidnappers ask for ransom, seul wouldn't give a single dime. she wouldn't care if you died. the reality is seul hates the people in the golden circle, but she has to keep up her facade so she gets a bunch of powerful and wealthy friends who all genuinely like her and would definitely help her if she needed the help. by chasing after the things she wants, she disregards the things she already has; being afraid of being forgotten and replaced, she forgets and replaces those who've always been with her.

to the world, sangdan suddenly announced a new addition to the family when the child was ten. the reason was that mirae and insung wanted to give the child a simpler childhood so she didn't grow up thinking that she was above everyone else. everyone praised the young couple's way of thinking. in reality? mirae is infertile. a surrogate mother could leak the truth for money, so adopting from a random rural countryside orphanage was the best choice to them.
seul's parents have an interesting dynamic: insung was the one who married into mirae's family, as he moved into the jo family's huge mansion and began working as a lawyer for his wife's family business. the two genuinely love each other, and have since college, but the two don't fit the stereotyped gender roles. insung is the gentler parent who knew of seul's crushes throughout elementary school, while mirae knew of seul's grades. even within themselves, insung is always the one expressing affection while mirae fends him off as she tries to keep her smile showing.
but either way, the two sincerely love seul and seul returns the sentiments. surprisingly.
boyfriend, cha jiwoon / 19 (int. age) /
jiwoon is the grandson of the ceo of byeol corporation, and paired with good looks and a benevolent personality, you'd expect him to be a part of the golden circle and be popular as , but jiwoon prefers to keep to himself and is everybody's friend but at the same time nobody's. the co-chief-of-editor of the grapevine along with seul, seul is pretty much the closest friend he has. to her credit, seul actually likes the boy. jiwoon is witty, has a kind heart and was smart, not just academically, and so he quickly became someone seul genuinely liked.
a year after they became good friends, jiwoon dropped a bomb: seul, I'm gay. and suddenly it became crystal clear why jiwoon always made himself an outcast.
cha jiwoon, let's date. seul replied. laughing at his confused expression, seul said that jiwoon was a nice guy and he could stop her grandmother's stupid blind dates and she could be his cover. everyone was fooled by the two's antics, and just deduced they only ever hugged and held hands in public because they preferred to keep the relationship to themselves.
the two have been "going strong" for three years, a great feat for students, and even the teachers know of - and subtly approve - the relationship. seul likes the envy from people and how there's someone she can act sweet with. sure, jiwoon's not her actual boyfriend, but she can experience "sneaking hugs" and holding hands as the two stroll around hongdae.
oh, also she's got probably one of the darkest secrets of byeol corp, so that's a perk as well.
boyfriend's boyfriend, song dongjun / 19 (int. age)
dongjun, a scholarship student from a middle class family with an expertise in science and maths, has been going strong with jiwoon for two years. dongjun isn't a bullied scholarship kid and was more of a wallflower, either seen in his classroom, the chemistry laboratory or the grapevine's editing room. but ever since people noticed seul being seemingly very good friends with him, dongjun has become someone treated very well.
he had always been sure of his uality and boldly confessed to jiwoon one night when they were working on an article together. he apologised for saying that when jiwoon had a girlfriend, only for jiwoon to tell him the truth. the next day, the three locked the editing room and devised a plan to make the whole fiasco work.
to make the story short, every time dongjun and jiwoon went out together, seul would tag along. dongjun would be labelled as a third wheel, but really, seul was there so the two could be affectionate without making people suspect anything. case in point: jiwoon and dongjun would hold hands and run off as seul ran behind (slowly) yelling for dongjun to stop stealing my boyfriend! as the two males laughed and ran away before stopping at an alley to pepper each other with kisses. seul would stop at the entrance of the alley and block the views of the passerbys.
does dongjun get slightly fed up when he sees seul and jiwoon heading off to lunch together with their hands entwinced as the class cheer them on? yes. but is he thankful? yes. does he like seul? yes. who wins? seul.
