Writer was Brave - Brothers Were Brave Process Blog #1

Hello everyone!

As promised, I have updated BWB! Yay! *happy dance* I've had such lovely support from my beta readers and the rest of you guys. I'm so happy that BWB has been getting so much love. Just in the past two days it got upvoted twice and got new subscribers! I never expected that! Especially when I had not yet updated!

Writing a fic with an OC, as well as popular but not trending groups has always been fun for me. I don't do it for the subscribers or the votes, not in the least. I do it because I love to write and there are things that I wish I could give some of my favorite Hallyu stars but obviously can't. I'm aware that my style isn't for everyone. I'm also aware that some of my characters are not favorites. That's okay as well. So long as they generate a reaction, I'll consider them a success!

I don't know how many of you are actually interested in me as a person and writer. I'll give a little background on myself, but if you don't want to read it skip ahead to the next paragraph, my feelings won't be hurt, promise! Let's see, I was born in the early 90s. My birthday is actually relatively close to Zico's. I flipped when I found out. Hint! I'm older, but just a tiiiiiny bit. "Older" than Zico, younger than Taewoon. I just recently graduated from university with a BA in English and a BA in Spanish. Huge nerd. I've been doing a lot of traveling this summer, which is why I haven't been writing as much as I expected. Just in the past two months I've been to London and Nuevo Vallarta (Riveira Nayarit in Mexico). I love to read high fantasy and fantasy novels, though I recently picked up a biography about Cleopatra. Did you guys know she was stuck inside a palace with Caesar for months and that she was not an evil seductrees like the media made her out to be? She was sixteen and in the middle of a war with her younger brother. Who knew, right? Anyway, I've been writing for about...dang...eleven years? I at math so don't trust me on that. I love to eat, but breakfast grosses me out. I can't cook for . I'm kinda athletic but lazy af so my talent never amounted to anything. I can throw a mean pitch though. And I also still have a killer roundhouse kick, haha! I'm socially awkward and can't make friends easily, but once I do, they're the good kind that last a lifetime. Don't make me take or make phonecalls. Phone anxiety. Nuh uh. I have three sisters (two are halfsies), a newphew, a niece on the way, and a black German Shepherd puppy that scratched my face the other day while I was trying to feed him >_> I get chu, Aslan, I get chu >_> Oh yeah, one last thing. I used to be huge on anime and manga before I was into K-Pop. Recently, I've been reading The Wallflower by Tomoko Hayakawa. It's hilarious! I've seen the anime and live action drama, so it's one of my faves! Definitely give it a read if you want a good laugh! It's absolutely ridiculous in the best kind of way.

With that being said, I'll share a little dirty secret: I used to be 100% head over heels in LOVE with Zico. Yup. You heard it here folks. I loved Woo Zico. I know, right? How can a person writing a story about a girl that is in love with Woo Taewoon have loved Zico? Well, if you're a BBC, you should know there is either love Zico or very easily ignore Zico with no in between. What can I say, the kid's got talent and presence. So, how did I fall out of love with Zico? Easy! I bumped into SPEED. Now, hear me out. I didn't go through the whole "Oh, Zico has a hyung?!" phase. Nah. I DIVED into SPEED. Don't Tease Me and Zombie Party are freaking amazing. At first, I didn't have a bias, then WAHPOW! Woo Taewoon came flying at me in Why I'm Not? 왜 난꼭 Like...EXCUSE YOU SIR BUT HOW DARE YOU!!

So, I loved Taewoon before I even found out he was related to Zico. Then BAM! He comes at me in Zico's episode of 4 Things Show and I'm like WHAT EVEN IS THIS?! And see, my heart just can't love both brothers at the same time. It chose one: Taewoon. I still love Zico, but if I ever met him, you bet I would ask him for Taewoon!

Since I love Taewoon, I tried to find out more about him. It really hurt to see so many people just calling him "Zico's hyung." I've had people call me "X's cousin," and "X's sister." Even when I told them "My name is Blossom!" they would just laugh in my face and call me "X's cousin." It really, really, really . It's like your entire identity is stripped, stolen from you.

One day, I got to thinking, what if there was someone that chose Taewoon over Zico all the time? What if that person loved Taewoon so much, Zico couldn't compete or match up to him? What if the roles were reversed and Taewoon had something Zico desperately needed? From those thoughts Brothers Were Brave was born.

Honestly, I never imagied it would get this big or come this far. It all started as an experiment. It took a lot of courage for me to change the point of view from second to third, to create an entire character from nothing. Readers nowadays seem to perfer short scenarios, one shots written in second person. I can't do that very well. It goes against everything I stand for as a writer. I was little more than nervous and afraid when I first posted the prologue of BWB. And now here we are, 28 chapters later.

The story has changed a bit as it's gone along. Some events were removed and others were added. There was a drinking scene with Su Jong and Eun Mi. It didn't quite fit with anything else that surrounded it, so I scrapped it for later use. I have not found a spot for it just quite yet, but maybe it'll appear in Su Jong's own story. There was also a scene with Su Jong and Aunt Minha. That also didn't make it since it seemed too forced and a little unnatural.

The scenes where parents or adults come into play never make it in either. The characters present are all young adults whose lives have been controlled by others for years. Managers, stylists, CEOs, huge companies; it seemed a bit much to have adults come into the mix as well. Taewoon, Eun Mi, and Zico are all in their early 20's when the story is taking place. As someone who is in her early 20's, I believe that decisions about my relationship with others are my own. Imagine if Eun Mi's aunt and uncle got involved? Imagine if Zico's dad made an appearance? In both Mexican and Korean cultures, parental approval is a big deal, more so in Korea than in Mexico, it seems. And it is not that I want the characters to disregard their parents' opinion or adivce, not in the least. It is for them to have their own space to grow without someone trying to change their minds all the time. I'm so sick and tired of that evil, controlling parent trope. Young adults nowadays have bigger things to worry about than finding a suitable spouse that will please their parents. Like what even. Anyway, this is why "adults" hardly ever appear in the story. I rather like it that way.

There are moments and scenes between the members of L6 and CELESTIAL that don't make it into the posted chapters either. The story revolves around three specific characters; adding in their shenanigans would work against the overall tone and feeling that I'm trying to convey. I'm actually thinking about adding a little series of one-shots or scenarios with L6 and CELESTIAL after the story is all done. Let me know in the BWB comments or even down below in this comment section and tell me what you guys think of this idea.

I would LOVE to hear from you guys. Please, please don't be shy and leave comments! If there's something that doesn't make sense or if you just want to drop by and say hi, I'd love to hear about it! I'll respond as best as I can and as quickly as I can, promise!

If you've stayed until the end of this ridiculously long post, wow! You're amazing! Next time, I'll try to write a profile of L6 and CELESTIAL.

Thanks everyone!

Write you soon,
