용맹_V: 林琴音 CRYSTAL UNIT (revamped bc of zicohyun)

HAETNIM, VALIANT'S GODDESS OF SOUND!
"THANK YOU SO, SO, SO MUCH FOR SUPPORTING US ALL THESE YEARS, AND HERE'S TO MANY MORE ADVENTURES TOGETHER WITH YOU AND VALIANT, MY SISTERS!"
full name hayashi kotone ・ はやしコトネ ・ 林琴音
aliases
임햇님 her birth name is very long in hangul, so instead of writing it out every time she has to put her name on something (unless of course it's a legal document), her parents gave her a korean name, which she used throughout her school days. acquaintances also call her haetnim and variations thereupon, but if they make it to her inner circle, they can "graduate" to kotone, so to speak. anyway, she has no idea where haetnim comes from, though she knows the hanja for im is identical to hayashi in kanji.
해식님 & 여신 what classmates would call her, and more recently, diamonds. one classmate in particular noticed the similarities between haetnim and haesiknim, and her name quickly became synonymous with that of the medieval moon goddess. or any goddess, really.
금선 & LYRA two nicknames bestowed upon her based on the default names of the female character in pokémon heartgold and soulsilver (her name is the default in the japanese version, which is how the whole thing started). "geumseon", which literally meaning "geum string," comes from the korean version, while "lyra" is the default in the english, german, and spanish editions. these nicknames are used by other pledis artists (perhaps other members of valiant?) who like pokémon. even fans use these sometimes.
GENERAL koto-chan, kotonie, haetnim-ah
birthdate march 26, 1995 + eighteen

birthplace tokyo-to, kantō-chiho, japan
hometown bucheon-si, gyeonggi-do, south korea
ethnicity japanese
nationality japanese → s. korean (as of 03.2015)
languages spoken
일본어 semi-fluent, her native language. having lived in japan for the first five years of her life, kotone was immersed in the language well before she came to south korea. even after leaving their home country, she and her family continued to communicate in japanese, and kotone would study words she didn't by asking her parents to buy her japanese-language books, and later using language learning apps. she is better at comprehension and reading than speaking and writing, though her studying has helped her improve all-around.
한국어 fluent, learnt by necessity. she's lived in south korea for a long time, so she has learnt the language through immersion. her accent is as standard as they come, and she typically leans toward the formal side, both in speech or writing. with those who hold a great importance to her, though, she'll use half-talk (given they are the same age as her, or she is older than them).
영어 basic, learnt in school. it was a requirement, so she didn't have much of an interest in learning the language. that being said, she often ignores english grammar rules and resorts to korean ones, and also speaks with a heavy accent.
湊崎紗夏 (twice) / 名井南 (twice)

height & weight officially 171cm & 49kg, 170cm & 52kg in reality.
appearance kotone likes keeping her hair long and it's natural jet black, but pledis had her cut it down to just a bit past her shoulders (previously, it was to her waist) and dyed it dark blond / light brown for valiant's debut; it has since been dyed pink, gray, bleach blond, and dark brown, among others. anyway, from her double eyelids, large, round eyes, and long, dark eyelashes to her pale skin and naturally reddish lips, she is, to many, the classic definition of beauty. she has a thin frame, now slightly less frail due constant dance practice building up muscle mass, and combined with her long legs, most people think she's a model like her siblings. until they hear her sing, that is. her posture is always immaculate, and when she walks, her chin is held up just a bit, enough that others notice.
first impression there's a reason the name "hayashi kotone" is synonymous with "goddess."

林琴音 lookbook
though her mother and both of her siblings are involved in fashion (some to a larger degree than others), kotone isn't as stylish as most would think. like, she knows what works, what's in, she just doesn't care. she would be perfectly content walking out in jeans or sweatpants and a tee shirt or sweater—usually of a dark color—or better yet in her pajamas, every day. but being an idol requires her to at least appear in fashion, so pledis stylists have to work hard to make sure kotone looks okay, especially onstage. for anything offstage, they give her "recommendations," which she always wears because she's given a stern talking to if she doesn't. these outfits are casually elegant in order to further the "yeoshin" concept. so, lots of maxi dresses, skirts and blouses, hats. of course, if valiant's comeback theme doesn't fit her look, she'll be put in something to match it, if not just a bit more dressed up than the others.
intj : the architect  slytherin ・ 1w9 : sP INSTINCT
independent, brave, proactive, incisive, modest, placid
irascible, shallow, blunt, negative, phlegmatic, prissy
there's a saying that goes "let sleeping dogs lie," and this applies to hayashi kotone very well; she wants people to just leave her be, and if they do, she'll let them be themselves too. and if she wants to interact with them, she will. when that happens, kotone is as pleasant as can be, a ray of sunshine. for that reason, she can be seen as quiet, introverted, shy even. watching her from a distance, one can see her deep interest in philosophy and poetry and classical literature, how gentle she is with her plants, how gentle she probably is with others. when people see a pretty girl like kotone who likes keeping to herself, curiosity gets the best of them, and her solitude is gone. and so emerges the state kotone is almost always seen in, the reason people call a behind her back.

for starters, she has that glare. not the comical kind from a drama, but a true icy stare that she gives those that disturb her peace. to get them to leave, she will be as abrasive and blunt as possible, and if she has the energy to say more (which, thankfully, she usually doesn't), she will likely start to pick at every flaw she can see on the other person until they leave her alone again. she often thinks the worst of people. this impression of her quickly spreads, and soon everyone sees her as some sort of villain, seeing her every fault, no matter how small, as a complete failure. for this reason, she has very few friends (almost none, really). but rather than "rude," or "cold," kotone likes to call herself decisive. she knows what she wants, whether she wants to talk to someone or not, et cetera. there's nothing wrong with that, right?

on-stage, kotone is much more likeable. gone is blank stare, the girl without energy, and cold demeanor, and in her place stands what fans have come to describe as a "beagle." she smiles so much it leaves her sore at the end of the day, laughs so loud her ears ring. "haetnim," as she would eventually be named, is everything hayashi kotone is not.

background kotone's life, until she joined pledis and debuted with valiant, was never particularly exciting. she is the youngest daughter and final child of akihara megumi, a fashion designer and icon better known by her mononym fumiko, and hayashi daisuke, an accountant. the family of five moved to bucheon for what her mother called a "fresh start," and kotone was turning five at the time. throughout their lives, kotone and her siblings were complimented for their natural beauty, and so all of them were expected to go into the entertainment industry in one way or another. her sister kaori went into modeling in her mid-teens and became a relatively famous model in east asia by the time she hit twenty, while her brother kousei was set on studying acting and film in college. kotone, on the other hand, wasn't sure what she wanted to do, because from an early age, she loved plants. loved them. she loved them so much that she wanted to be a gardener. or a botanist. or anything that would involve her being surrounded by beautiful flowers and trees. but both of her parents shot down this idea, telling her that she could have a lot of plants regardless of which occupation she chose. so, she fell back on singing, which was something else she had been complimented for since she was young. even though she didn't like crowds, she thought that maybe, just maybe, her passion would outweigh that and her desire to be alone. her parents wholeheartedly supported her.

upon turning twenty on march 26, 2015, kotone officially became a naturalized south korean citizen, thus causing her to lose her japanese citizenship.

relationships
BEST FRIEND 김설현 (AOA)  EIGHTEEN-GOING-ON-NINETEEN
the only person kotone calls a friend sincerely. the only person she considers to be her friend, really. being born in the same year, growing up in the same neighborhood, and attending to the same schools, it was inevitable that seolhyun and kotone would meet eventually. kotone has always appreciated seolhyun's sensitivity to others preferences, including her own for peace and quiet. both ended up becoming idols, but seolhyun, who debuted first, actually did not influence kotone's decision to become one, although it certainly brought the idea to her attention. it was then that she auditioned.
anyway, because they are both idols, and by extension very busy, they don't get to see much of each other in person anymore. however, they still keep in contact through text and the occasional videochat, even meeting in person once in a blue moon. the type of friends to be really ghei with each other.

SURROGATE SISTER  임진아 / NANA (AFTER SCHOOL) ・ TWENTY-TWO
a close friend of kotone's sister, since they both model. jinah and kotone had never spoken to one another until some circumstances (coughlookattheinterviewcough) came up. now, every so often, they are seen in public—with or without kaori—hanging out. jinah, not being a trainee back when kotone was, had never heard the gossip circulating about her behavior, and therefore never thought that kotone was so bad. kotone legitimately thinks jinah is cool, and lowkey looks up to her. sees her as a sister, even. or at least more so than kaori, who she's always felt envy toward.

SAME AGE FRIENDS + ARON ・ TOO MANY TO LIST; HOVER PLS (VARIOUS) ・ EIGHTEEN
kotone met the boys through minhyun. some would admit that they sided with the many people who thought kotone was a , while others didn't have much of an opinion on her; they might have just thought she was attractive. but after getting to know her, those opinions changed... somewhat. they still feel as if they tread on thin ice with her, but as long as they keep the volume down, she's pleasant to be around. kotone probably gets along best and most naturally with jonghyun, but hangs around aron a bit more because he and minhyun are bros 4 lyfe

nayoung, on the other hand, kotone simply heard about when the girl first joined pledis from a fellow, friendlier member of valiant. someone who keeps in touch with everybody, even the new trainees. like kotone, nayoung is tall and modelesque, and has the nickname "stone buddha," much like the fact that kotone doesn't show many facial expressions off-stage. heck, kotone's (korean) surname is the same as nayoung's. so, inevitably, these similarities lead to comparisons; who's prettier, who's more talented, et cetera. they became a bit closer after participating in a photoshoot together, and now neither of them have any ill feelings for the other, though constantly pitting the two against one another has really gotten old.

STUDENT ・ 이석민 / 도겸 / DK (SOON-TO-BE-SVT) ・ SIXTEEN
their first encounter was after a particularly grueling day of dance practice. the other girls had left, leaving only liqin and kotone. they were having a nice, pleasant chat, draining their respective water bottles, when one of kotone's old vocal coaches (the one she was arguably closest to) walked in with a boy kotone had never seen before.
"it's been a while, kotonie." the vocal coach says with a smile. kotone quirks an eyebrow, her friendlier version of urging the woman to continue, "i'm here to introduce your student." she points to seokmin. kotone doesn't even look at him, but liqin does, long enough to see his face fall. and to acknowledge just how much awkward this guy was wafting.

"i'm not exactly a 'good' teacher." kotone adds air quotes for emphasis.

"well unfortunately, we're running out of people to ask." kotone raises an eyebrow again, "after school is busy with their new song, nu'est is preparing for promotions in japan... and not all of you valiant girls are known for your vocals—" liqin glances up, "oh, sorry." she flashes an apologetic grin. liqin shrugs.

"can he dance, at least?" kotone asks.

"i'm a vocal teacher. can't say i'm an expert."

"can he sing, then?"

seokmin holds his breath.

"he'll get better with you helping him."

a long pause. "that's not answering the question, teacher."

another lenghty pause. "... he can."

for the first time the entire conversation, kotone looks at seokmin, giving him a once-over.  he suddenly becomes hyperaware that he's been holding his breath for a while. explains why he felt lightheaded all of a sudden.

"fine, i'll take him." kotone says after some time.

seokmin finally breathes again.

when the valianteen tutoring began, that he was too scared to talk to her. she was really, really intimidating. and pretty. that was alright for kotone; it made giving him suggestions a lot easier, since he would just smile and nod. they became a bit more familiar with one another later on, but never to the point where their teacher-student relationship was shattered. nowadays, he's still pretty formal with her, calling her "(hayashi) seonsaeng-nim" even though she isn't teaching him anymore, despite being closer than they were before. why? he still seeks her (verbal) approval.

VALIANT ・ VARIOUS
kotone isn't a fan of noise. living with eleven other girls doesn't exactly fall into the quiet category. so, she's pretty grumpy off-camera, especially when the girls approach her to ask if she wants to join them in some activity. on-camera, however, she's initiating skinship with all of them, being friendly and such. it's what her persona requires. she likes some of them more than others, and clearly has her favorites (see below).

LIL SIS ・ 馮麗沁 ・ FIFTEEN
kotone's favorite in the whole group. in her eyes, she and liqin are two sides of the same coin, sharing many interests and personality traits. of all the girls, she's naturally nicest to liqin, and it's plain to see that she considers the girl to be like the adopted younger sister she never expected to find.

FAKE FRIEND 지영애 ・ SEVENTEEN
in the eyes of fans, kotone and youngae are both "beagles," and thus would get along well. and they do.... just onstage. as we know, kotone is nothing like the girl people see on tv in reality, so the fact that youngae is means that kotone can't stand to be around her for long. so, kotone plays nice on camera, but mostly ignores the other girl off. not in a mean way necessarily, but because her introvert instincts start to kick in.

TENTATIVE FRIEND ・ 花田舞 (OC BY KKALLO) ・ SIXTEEN
her relationship with mai is an enigma. it formed in the first place solely because they both speak japanese, and she felt badly for mai, who was struggling with korean at the time. so, she talked to her. she soon found that mai was far too loud for her taste, but by that time, it was too late. mai had latched herself onto kotone and didn't seem intent on letting go any time soon. so, she continues to let mai cling onto her, operating under the thought that she's doing it because she pities the other girl. but really, deep down, she sees mai as a dear friend... even if she can't tell.

trivia
・ besides being part of the crystal unit, kotone known for being an honorary member of emerald unit and part of the fanmade "beagle line."
・ kotone's onstage persona is much ditzier and bubbly than she actually is. pledis basically told her that if she didn't have this persona and just went on as she normally did, netizens wouldn't just think think she was an ice princess, they'd think far worse. she doesn't like the clear fallacy that comes with the persona, but channeling it still comes easily to her.
・ (since i'm a dumb and deleted the section) her persona, the "goddess of sound," is a reference to how loud and outgoing she is on-stage, especially on variety shows.
・ her fanclub color is officially called "pearl lavender."
・ although she has a stage name, she's one of those idols fans will refer to by their real one instead.
・ she isn't sure where her personality manifested from. her best guess is a combination of being a high-level introvert (and by extension a rarer mbti type, thus not being able to relate to others as easily), preferring peace and quiet, feeling overshadowed by her siblings (especially her sister), an upbringing in a rich household, and having distant parents that forced her to often fend for herself, along with any other number of factors.
・she is unsure about her uality, as she has yet to discover the aro/ace community. if she had, however, she would likely identify as gray-aromantic demiual. as a result, she's only had two "typical" crushes prior to valiant's debut—one being her fifth grade teacher and the other a boy who worked at a convenience store she frequented in her trainee days—and both were built up over a long period of time. the rest have been squishes and/or aesthetic attractions, though she doesn't know the exact labels to describe them.
・ has a gigantic squish for bts' v. she doesn't really know why—heck, she isn't even a fan of bangtan's music—she just does. anyway, when it comes to kim taehyung, kotone becomes a full-blown fangirl. she gets nervous and sweaty just at the thought of being able to meet him in person because she really wants to be friends with him?? even though he would probably piss her off after a while??? but she doesn't care. this never ceases to make the other girls laugh.
・ also has a huge squish on (and is aesthetically attracted to) pledis girlz's minkyeong. now, kotone doesn't go into fangirl mode when it comes to minkyeong, but she can be heard (sincerely) talking about how beautiful and kind the younger girl is.
・ her ideal type is someone significantly taller than her that understands and can connect with her on multiple levels.
・ likes to think of herself as an intellectual, because she reads so much. she's most interested in existentialism.
・ has a journal she keeps under her pillow to write poetry that comes to her. sometimes they're just fragments of poems, or just titles, but other times they're complete. she has another pocket-sized one that she takes when valiant travels.
・ a nerd tbh??? like she's not much of a sci-fi / fandom-y nerd, but her hobbies are just....... really nerdy....... like she reads and writes all the time and takes care of her plants for hours what a big fat frickin' nERD or just a premature grandma.
・ much like liqin, kotone loves plants. flowers, herbs, succulents… you name it, she loves it to death. she keeps several potted plants around the dorm, mostly in her room.
・ typically keeps to herself in the dorm. she stays in her room and reads, practices choreography, texts, or sleeps. sometimes, she'll even eat in there just to be left alone.
・ has a habit of looking at her nails. not to check for chips or anything, but just because. this gesture unfortunately makes her look bored with whatever she's doing at the time.
・ not particularly close to any of her immediate family members except for her brother. when valiant has time off, she'll typically bring mai along. it was actually mai's idea to stay with kotone's family for breaks, and kotone went along with it because she doesn't want to spend time with her parents by herself.
・ she's pretty darn flexible. not on the level of, say, victoria, but flexible nonetheless. she already had the genes, but because she hardly exercised growing up, she never knew her potential. so, nearly three years of daily, hardcore dance practice paid off in more ways than one.
・ her all-time favorite groups are: after school, snsd, boyfriend, and exo.
・ although she has several nicknames derived from pokémon, she actually prefers digimon.
・ may or may not have met byun baekhyun in passing a couple of times, as they grew up in the same area.
・ for her contacts, kotone used to just use the person's name. it was simple and professional. but one member of valiant pestered her into give all the other members nicknames, so she did just that, eventually expanding into the rest of the people in her phone. each nickname is based on what she associates with the person, usually an object, but occasionally based on a feeling the person evokes in her, or even a concept. some names include: "swings" for seolhyun (because they used to spend a lot of time playing on the swings), "family" for jinah (again, she sees jinah as a sister), "beagle" for youngae (pretty self-explanatory), "garden" for liqin (she likes flowers, so), "badger" for mai (because she pesters her so much), and "bridge" for minhyun.
・ her username on any given social media outlet is always a variation of aerangis (whether it be adding an underscore, hyphen, or an extra letter or two) if she can't get the whole word. it comes from the genus of her favorite kind of orchid, which she likes for their simple shape and color.
more to come!

haetnim (햇님) ・ the goddess of sound

the pantheon ・ #b6b6f2 ・ svt student : dk
few people expected seokmin of all the svt members to end up being tutored by hayashi kotone. why wouldn't she tutor woozi, her equivalent in the group? joshua, with his unique vocals? jeonghan, who wasn't trained in dance specifically but could follow a beat well? or even seungkwan, who could learn a thing or two about dance from a fellow vocalist? but instead, someone among pledis' higher-ups decided that kotone's difficult personality was best matched by the adorkable lee seokmin.

seokmin was a diligent student, following kotone's instructions to the best of his ability, but in the beginning, kotone was, from his perspective, a teacher with impossible expectations. nothing ever seemed to be good enough for her. she never yelled (although let's be honest, she never does), never said anything directly mean, but sometimes seokmin would lay awake at night, think about her constructive criticism and come to the conclusion that she was disappointed in him, disappointed she hadn't been paired up with another member of seventeen's vocal unit. someone more talented than him. he expressed this concern to the vocal coach who had paired them up, asking that she "please, please, please don't tell her i talked to you about this." the vocal coach promised not to mention it, and added that she had planned to talk to kotone about it soon anyway. seokmin was relieved.
"kotonie, what do you think of tutoring seokmin?" the vocal tutor asks, swiveling in her chair. she and kotone are sitting in the conference room. it's more official than the woman would like, but it's the only place in the building where their conversation couldn't possibly be overheard.

"he's a good student, i don't lose my patience with him very much. and he has improved since we started working together. compared to the tapes you showed me, he's much better than when he began." kotone replies, resting her elbow on the arm rest and settling her cheek in her hand, "what is this about, exactly?"

"we're—no, i'm concerned about your teaching methods."

"why?"

"we should have addressed this earlier, but..." the woman wracks her brain for the right words, "seokmin is... sensitive. your teaching has helped him, but i think he would benefit from a more gentle approach."

"how so?"

the vocal tutor scratches her head, "try to tell him he's doing well every once in a while. i'm not saying all the time, just... try not to be so negative and only point out his mistakes."
being a trusted mentor, kotone decided to listen to her old vocal trainer and use more positive reinforcement. seokmin noticed the change in their sessions together. it was subtle, probably not noticeable for most, but he could see it. she started bringing snacks and giving him some at the end of their sessions. she still never praised him, really, but she no longer made so many negative comments either. seokmin started to enjoy his tutoring instead of dread it, and was, admittedly, a little sad when it ended.

position main vocalist, main dancer (main vocalist, dancer)

dance twin 이미주, (lovelyz) / 박정화 (exid)

trainee years two years, eight months (august 2010–may 2013)
training experience much like any other trainee, kotone was worked to her limits and beyond. training is difficult no matter how you look at it, after all. to kotone, though, she was under a lot more pressure. "why?" you ask? because even though she entered pledis for her voice, most of the classes she took were for dance. kotone was not very active as a child, and thus not very athletic, so her voice, while good in and of itself, lacked control once she started moving. to compensate, pledis assigned her to many dance classes in hopes of increasing her stamina, and by extension improve her ability to sing and dance at the same time. and it worked.

socially, kotone was popular for her looks and appearance on a talent show, but not so much for her attitude. she was never around long enough to be considered a veteran trainee who demanded respect, so instead, she came across as arrogant, acting like she would debut as a soloist (which, to be fair, was a thought that crossed her mind for some time). this didn't gain her friends, but certainly made her a name known throughout the pledis building.

pre-debut interview (scroll!)
kotone is the first trainee to be interviewed after a thirty minutes long lunch break. and she, ever punctual, has arrived five minutes early, sitting in a rather uncomfortable padded chair and fumbling with a gum wrapper she'd found in her pocket not too long before. as she creases and unfolds the tiny piece of foil and paper, she wonders why there couldn't be more than one interviewer. but, she reasons, this is pledis we're talking about. pledis never thinks about efficiency.

about six minutes later, her interviewer finally appears. "sorry i'm late." he says with what kotone assumes is false earnestly, but is in reality completely genuine. she shrugs, putting the wrapper back in her pocket. not everyone can be punctual. noting her silent response, the interviewer shuffles through a stack of papers, "you're.... im haetnim? oh, wait... or are you hayashi kotone? this must be a mistake..."

kotone shakes her head. "i go by both; im haetnim is the name i use in school, because my birth name is so long in hangul. you may address me with whichever you feel more comfortable with."

"so, hayashi kotone is okay?" he sees the girl nod. "glad we have that settled. i'm takjun."

"it's very nice to meet you, takjun."

despite the polite words, her tone is flat, lifeless. it catches him off-guard, "um, well... let's get started! first question: how did you get into pledis?"

this one's easy. "i auditioned for superstar k2 in seoul." kotone says fluidly, hands placed neatly and purposefully in her lap. the signature glare quickly returns and warps her entire face into a scowl as her interviewer asks 'can you elaborate on that?' "doesn't everyone watch the show?"

"well, no. not everyone likes talent shows. i know eunwoo isn't." another male around the same age as takjun, who is standing in a place kotone can't see, rolls his eyes. takjun holds up finger guns.

kotone makes a sound reminiscent of a huff, "i made it into the top fifty, but was eliminated in the following round. a lot of representatives from different companies came up to recruit me. i chose pledis because it seemed smaller than the others. that way i could debut sooner."

takjun frowns, if only slightly, "so it wasn't because you like son dambi? or after school?"

"i don't not like them. after school is one of my favorite groups of all-time. but debuting was more important to me."

he glances to the furthest end of the room to meet the eyes of a middle-aged woman with a very important air to her. something about her screams 'producer,' or at the very least 'editor.' they exchange nods of confirmation, and she returns to note-taking, "okay, next question!" the male starts up again, "valiant is rumored to consist of pledis's best female trainees; how do you feel about that?"

"best how? in terms of talent?" kotone inquires.

the interviewer thinks for a moment, "if that's how you interpret the question." he responds, though he quickly regrets it.

"not all of the trainees here are talented. a lot of them have a desire to be famous, and that's it. so they have weak voices, a limited range, bad breath control, can't multitask. it takes time for them to improve even a little bit. but i think each has a strength in their own right, even if it's just their appearance." kotone explains, hands still neatly folded in her lap.

"and...... how do you see yourself?" another important-looking person in the room makes a sound of protest, but the interviewer ignores them. the girl's not kind to her peers, so he wonders how kind she is to herself. and an interviewer is supposed to ask follow-up questions, right? this seemed relevant anyway.

kotone ponders the question for a while, "the representatives all told me i had natural talent with my voice, especially with ballads; they told me i had 'haunting vocals,' but i had the potential for more variety in my voice with time and proper training. they also told me i had no breath control at all. so when i came to pledis, a lot of my training focused on dance, even though i entered as a vocal trainee. i firmly believe i can improve even further, but i've come a long way from my audition for superstar k2." she says finally, with pauses every now and then to find the right words.

"huh." is all her interviewer can manage. he's surprised. her answer is much more..... humble than he expected (in a sense, anyway), and infinitely more self-critical. he sees the editor taking notes, probably something along the lines of "cut everything but 'each trainee has a strength.'"

"well, i guess that leads to the next question. did you think you were ever going to debut?"

kotone doesn't see how the two are connected, but doesn't let that confusion appear on her face, "i thought i would eventually. to be honest, it happened sooner than i expected. i thought it would take three years or more. that seems to be the average for most idols."

"interesting." takjun says after a brief pause. finally, an answer that won't need to be edited. the young man breathes a small sigh of relief.

"alright, now we're gonna deviate from the topic a little bit. you ready?" the girl appears to do nothing, which he assumes would translate to an 'okay, sure,' "who are you closest to in the pledis family, seventeen included?" he's taken aback by the expression that immediately forms onto the girl's face. it almost looks... sad.

kotone notices him looking at her with concern, and the face she had subconsciously made turns into her signature scowl for a second, then to a neutral look. rather than looking at him, she's looking through him, "i'm not very good at making friends, but.... i talk to nu'est-seonbaenim sometimes, because four of the members are close to my age. seungcheol-ssi too."

"all of you are the same age but you're formal with them?" the interviewer asks.

"i never said i was close to them. i just talk to them more than other people." kotone retorts. it seems this question has struck a nerve.

"isn't there someone under the pledis label your sister is close to?"

"my sister?"

"yes, hayashi kaori."

"i know my sister's name, but thank you for the reminder." her voice drips with a new-found venom. takjun is pretty sure the nerve just burst. someone behind the camera clears their throat.

"uh... i-it's nana your sister is close to, right?" he starts hesitantly, slowly regaining confidence, "can you just say 'nana-eonni,' then? just so you have an answer."

"but i gave you an answer."

the young man sighs, "can i... be frank with you?" she promptly nods. takjun does his best to hide his surprise, "all your answers so far make you sound abrasive. people aren't gonna like that. sure, the editors can do some things, but you aren't always going to have them to clean things up; you're gonna have to do some of that yourself. improve your attitude. like that answer you just gave? it makes you sound like a loner. and mentioning boys only will make fans attack you in any way they can. but if you mention nana instead, it'll prevent all that, and fans of your sister will pick up on it too. they'll look up valiant, valiant will gain more fans, and that means the company makes a better profit. that make sense?" his words are firm, but his tone still has a gentleness to it that kotone isn't used to hearing when someone wants to be honest with her.

kotone nods once again, staring down at her manicured nails. unlike most lectures, she feels the need to take a moment and consider the words directed at her. it feels like hours pass before she glances up at her interviewer again. for the first time in the entire conversation, the corners of her lips turn upwards instead of down. suddenly there's a light in her eyes that wasn't there before, "after school's nana! she's one of my sister's best friends." her smile is brighter now. it makes her cheeks ache. another person in the corner of the room gives takjun a thumbs up,

"much better." he says, voice wavering with some sort of nervousness. if kotone gets any satisfaction from the praise, it isn't noticeable. "so, what activities do you aspire to do outside of valiant?"

kotone puts a finger to her cheek, tapping it lightly. she already knows the answer, but does it for a comical, cutesy effect. if it hadn't been for the first few questions, no one in the room would have guessed it was fake, "i really like indie music. y'know, like broken valentine, or urban zapaka? so maybe a solo debut someday, or at the very least an indie-oriented subunit! i'd also like to do some modeling like my sister to show off different sides of me." she pauses, "but i'd really like to try acting like my brother, because i think it can be fun to act like a completely different person! there are a couple of other actors in my family anyway."

"must be something in the hayashi blood, huh?" takjun laughs awkwardly.

she giggles. again, without the context of before, it would be cute, "never thought about that before."

"o-okay, last question: where do you think you'll be in fifteen years?" takjun asks, evidentially still anxious.

i think it's clear that i want to be a soloist. i always have. "i really hope valiant will still be together, even then! but i'll be thirty-three then, won't i? my dreams will have changed by then. but i whatever happens, i think i'll still be singing!" (a/n: realistically i can see her being an indie soloist or a poet / author tbh)

her interviewer nods slowly, putting the stack of papers in his lap, "well, that's it. you're free to go." he flashes a smile. kotone ignores the kind gesture, jovial face disappearing without a trace. she bows a perfect ninety degrees to him, the cameraperson, and the various other adults in the room (the editor included) before walking out, fishing the gum wrapper back out of her pocket. it feels like the room just got warmer.

"should be fun editing that one, huh?" takjun asks no one in particular, turning back to face the opposing chair as the next girl walks in.
"WE HAVE A MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING OF ONE ANOTHER THAT I'VE NEVER EXPERIENCED IN MY LIFE NOR BELIEVE I WILL EVER EXPERIENCE AGAIN TO THE SAME DEGREE. WHETHER THAT MEANS WE STAY TOGETHER OR NOT IS ANOTHER QUESTION ENTIRELY."
love interest hwang minhyun ・ 황민현
back-up i wasn't going to have kotone join the str8 agenda but i couldn't think of anyone except seolhyun, an applicant, or minkyeong, and since seolhyun is dATING (im literally still screaming) / no one seems to want an applicant love interest cr eis / i don't know too much about minkyeong other than the fact that she is a mom and toO P ERTYT, i went with minhyun, because he's a) single as far as we know—boi istg........ ...—and b) the only person i could see kotone with based on her uality without creating a whole other relationship bc id probably die if i had ot do that. i mean i could have easily just not given her a love interest but i wanted my character to have one for once??? because i haven't had one in a while n wanted to challenge myself. aNYWAY. tl;dr it's mintone or nothin' because i'm lazy.

personality gentle, protective, intelligent, mature (most of the time), zealous, self-assured

beginnings it's the middle of 2010. not being a huge fan of talent and survival shows (something about that emotional connection one develops for contestants, only to more than likely be heartbroken, isn't appealing to him), minhyun had not seen kotone's performances on superstar k2, but some of the other pledis trainees had. in the practice studio, they would huddle together, and anything from "can you believe that girl is japanese?" to "she's such an ice princess," to "i hope she makes it to the top eleven..." and everything in between could be heard from their little groups. one day, curiosity got the best of him, and he asked who they were talking about. "hayashi kotone, of course!" they exclaimed. "how have you never heard of her?" minhyun shrugged. "well, you should watch the show!" they added. he never did. he didn't want to get invested.

no more than a month later, people were talking about her again. this time, the groups were saying something different. "can you believe she was eliminated?" "i heard she signed with loen," "no way! she totally signed with mystic!" "nuh-uh. i think they said sm or something...." minhyun paid no mind until the next day. as he walked inside the pledis building, he saw a girl wander into the middle of the entryway, staring down at a piece of paper in her hand. he found himself fixated on her long, sleek black hair. feeling eyes on her, the girl turned to face him, and, cliché as it sounds, time seemed to stop. she was just so beautiful and he couldn't stop staring.

eventually, he managed to ask her if she was lost, albeit stammering a bit. it seemed logical; he had never seen her around before, and she was looking from him to the piece of paper with an intensity that suggested she was looking for something. she replied that yes, she was. he asked where she was trying to go, she told him. he said it was on the way to where he was going (it wasn't) and could lead the way. she let him. as they walked, after regaining some of his composure, he introduced himself and asked what her name was. "hayashi kotone." she said. "nice to meet you, minhyun." her name was familiar to him by then, but in his reply, he made no indication of it. for the remainder of their walk, she relaxed a bit.
love story
2010–2011
minhyun and kotone rarely see each other from that day on, and when they do, the passing is so brief that neither can say a word. or, rather, minhyun can't say a word, because kotone doesn't even remember his name. but minhyun wants so badly to speak to her again, to get to know her. he hears the whispers of other trainees about her attitude, but he can't fully believe them. she seemed nice enough that day they met, if not a little cut and dry with her choice of words. but that certainly didn't warrant calling her a witch. "that," a trainer remarks one day, "is a crush if i ever did see one."

at the same time, kotone's own crush on the convenience store worker is in full bloom, and in terms of minhyun, all she can see is yet another hyperactive teenager that she doesn't want to deal with. she ignores him like all the others.

2012–2013
after debuting with nu'est, minhyun finds that he spends a lot of time at the pledis building, as it is the group's hub. the five of them are picked up from there, driven around to fulfill their schedule, and brought back to wait around for a while before returning to their dorm. minhyun promptly forms a routine in that time between returning to the company building and going home: he ventures into one of the practice studios (one he recalls rarely being used) and reads. this goes on nearly every day unless the group is traveling, and though he loves the other members dearly, he enjoys his solitude too, though it only lasts for a moment.

one night, the van drops nu'est off in the late evening, and minhyun promptly goes to his hideaway. but, as he approaches the door, he notices the light is on. there's no sound coming out of the room. maybe someone had forgotten to switch the light off? he walks in to investigate, and it's a repeat of two years prior. kotone looks up at him for a while, wondering why this random boy is staring at her, then returns to her book, remaining silent. rather than going off to another practice room, he sits at the opposite end of the room, and the two read in a peaceful silence. kotone appreciates his consideration.

in this new routine—sitting at opposite ends of the room, reading silently—they observe one another, noting every habit the other has. he's still transfixed by her midnight locks, the way the light plays off of them, the way they look more like the ocean at twilight than the hair on someone's head. sometimes kotone stares at his lips, not because she feels a desire to kiss them, but rather that she envies them; she had always felt her lips were too thin and shapeless. minhyun isn't sure how many months pass before he finally decides to break the silence. but before he can, kotone speaks up. she asks what book he is reading, since he had finished the one he had with him the day before. he tells her. she says she's never heard of it before and asks what it's about. he tells her. and from that day on, the routine changes again: instead of silence every single day, they talk occasionally. mostly about the books they are reading or had read or were planning to reading, but nevertheless, they were conversing. kotone finally learns his name again.

their conversations evolve, moving from books to their own lives. one day, when minhyun feels that maybe he's known her long enough to get a straight answer, he asks why she hangs around the pledis building even after her training for the day is over. she tells him she doesn't like going home very much. "don't worry about it." she adds, and after all that time, he knows better than to push her further. still, he wonders just what she means. in the time since they started talking, kotone stops seeing him as irritating and instead a person she can get along with, someone who understands her, someone she can probably confide in if she ever feels the need, not that she ever would. and this change of heart shows: she starts initiating the conversation more. eventually neither of them can actually read anymore because they talk the whole time.

the night after kotone learns she will be part of valiant, minhyun introduces her to his bandmates and one of the other so-called "pledis boys," and they have a mini celebration. nothing much (because kotone doesn't seem to be a party person), just a little get-together. they are as rowdy as she expects, considering minhyun is a friend of theirs, but having him there makes the interaction tolerable enough. from then on, hayashi kotone, the island in the middle of the sea, has a bridge to the outside world. an ambassador, in a sense, to help people understand her. she should really call him a friend, though. it's been that way since 2012, she just has yet to pay attention.

minhyun's feelings remain, but become less shallow: hayashi kotone is beautiful and breath-taking, both inside and out, and he wants everyone else to see that instead of calling her horrible names behind her back. he's even more in love with her than he had ever expected, so much so that he doesn't even think he would be disappointed if she felt differently. he's just glad to be able to talk to her. and kotone knows all this. it's obvious.

valiant finally debuts, and nu'est appears with five of the more outgoing members (kotone as haetnim included) as a sort of unofficial introduction to the public. the girls sit in front while the boys sit behind them on taller stools. minhyun happens to be seated behind kotone, and being so tall compared to the space provided, knocks his knees into kotone's back. he quietly apologizes, she soundlessly accepts his apology. over the course of the interview, this continues, and the public notices. the vast majority thinks it's adorable and begin to ship them (minhyun keeps his excitement about this to himself). pledis decides to take advantage of this sudden ship and asks the two of them to try interacting publicly more often, only to ship nu'est overseas indefinitely.

2014
after nu'est promoted outside of south korea for a while, kotone and minhyun are hanging out with their other 95-line friends when she hears him giggle for the first time. she isn't sure how she missed it before; maybe she just doesn't make him laugh. but regardless, something stirs in her heart, and it's something she's felt before. of course, he isn't a teacher she sees every day, and he isn't a random employee that serves as the only constant, sane thing in her life. she still doesn't understand this, whatever it is, but she's almost positive she can't talk to him about it. not until she figures it out. so she stays quiet, keeping those feelings (or whatever) to herself, and their relationship progresses.

this year, in private or in the company building (so, still pretty private, really), they become much more physical. when they sit next to each other, they touch in some way, whether it be sitting so close their arms brush, or touching each others' feet when they sit separately. if she's tired (which, considering her circumstances living with eleven other girls, is most of the time) she rests her head on his shoulder, and sometimes he'll rest his head on hers. to get minhyun's attention, kotone's first instinct is to grab him by the hand. in those times when they sit in silence, minhyun traces shapes on her skin, mostly her hands because he loves to look at them. his bandmates make jokes about how much of a couple they are without even going on a date, and even the valiant girls ask kotone if she's keeping something from them, which they wouldn't doubt.
"kotone, you're so lucky." liqin pipes up one day.

next to her, the older girl looks up from her book, closes it, and makes a bemused face. "hm? why am i lucky?"

"minhyun really likes you. i bet he'd do anything for you." the younger stretches out her legs, alternating between relaxing and flexing her toes.

"i know." kotone says plainly, returning to her book.

"do you like him?"

"we have a unique relationship. he..." the older girl trails off, searching for the right words, but her eyes never leave the page, "he has a special place in my heart."

"'special,' huh..." liqin replies in such a way that it seems she's testing the word on her tongue, "like a friend?" she adds, head tilted to the side.

"that definition could work." kotone nods, but still doesn't look up.

liqin frowns, "don't you ever feel like you're...  friendzoning him? because you know he likes you, but you don't?"

"the friendzone doesn't exist, silly." kotone shakes her head, gently hitting the top liqin's head with the book, "and i never said i didn't like him. because i do."

liqin's eyes widen, "are you guys dating, then?" she leans in closer, lowering her voice to a whisper, "if you are, i won't tell anybody."

there's a pure earnestness in the younger's voice, but kotone can't help smiling, ever so slightly, "no, we're not." she replies with a titter.

regardless, the unknown sensations that once confused her now feel familiar and... right. something about what they do just seems natural. but never once does the word "dating" cross their minds.

2015–2016
it's been three years since nu'est debuted, and minhyun feels that he can balance his professional and personal lives effectively. and with all the advances they'd made in the past year (including kotone actually introducing him as her friend), he decides he wants to take things further. or at least, that's what he plans to do before pledis ships him and the rest of the group off to japan. so their contact is limited to texting, and kotone, despite having liqin to talk to and mai to pester and distract her, feels true lonely for the first time in her life. she never felt this alone leaving home for her first day of school, or to live in the dorms without knowing anyone, not being able to see her family for months on end. texting just isn't the same as being face to face; she especially misses being able to reach out and touch him. she expresses this to him, and for a while, he doesn't respond. kotone worries that she made him upset. as she's about to ask, he finally texts back.
BRIDGE: what do you think of me?
HAESIKNIM: you're very important to me.
BRIDGE: that's.... not really what i meant.
HAESIKNIM: what did you mean, then?
BRIDGE: like, would you date me?
HAESIKNIM: yeah, probably.
BRIDGE: are you saying that because you know i want to date you or because you actually want to?
HAESIKNIM: because i actually want to. i think. i feel differently about you than i do other people. we're friends, right? but it doesn't always feel like enough. (minhyun later admits that he took a screenshot of this message and looks at it if he ever feels down)
HAESIKNIM: where is this coming from all of a sudden, anyway? is it what i said before?
BRIDGE: no, no i agree. it's just
BRIDGE: well
HAESIKNIM: ?
BRIDGE: i like you. a lot.
HAESIKNIM: i like you a lot too.
they both say 'like,' sure, but are fully aware of what word should replace it.

a few days after the group returns from japan, sometime between one and two o'clock, they're texting. they want to see each other in person again. kotone suggests the roof of valiant's dorm; she'll let him in and they'll take the stairs. he agrees with just a bit of hesitation ("what if someone finds out?" "no one's going to. and don't forget to bring blankets; i heard it's cold." "alright, alright"). kotone makes it out of her room without a hitch, but when she reaches the front door, she faces a major obstacle—she can't find her shoes. why are there so many shoes?! seyeon hears the commotion and groggily stumbles out of her own room.
"what's going on...?" she half-mumbles, rubbing her eyes.

"seyeon?"

"kotone, is that you?" the manager shuffles closer to assess the scene. noting they are surrounded by pitch blackness, she turns on the flashlight of her phone, squinting at the bright light, "what are you doing up?"

"...i'm going to the roof." that's true.

"why?"

kotone realizes she could have easily gone barefoot so this whole conversation wouldn't have happened. the floors weren't dirty, and she's sure minhyun would have given her a piggyback ride if necessary. but it's too late now, she needs weighs her options for this response.

"well?"

kotone decides to go with what she was taught to always use: honesty, "i'm meeting someone."

"who?" seyeon presses.

"minhyun," kotone replies, voice barely audible in an attempt to be even quieter. is she blushing? seyeon muses, peering closer at the girl's face. kotone's cheeks redden even further. she is; she's embarrassed, though only about being caught sneaking out. she had proven time and time again that she didn't care if people knew she was going to be hanging out with minhyun.

the two stare at one another, unblinking, before seyeon sighs, a gentle smile on her lips, "you are so lucky i'm not one of the other managers, you know that?" she pauses and looks away for a moment, "just be back before we leave so you can get ready, okay?" kotone nods. seyeon starts back toward her room, but after just a few steps, she whirls around, "and be safe."

kotone's eyebrows furrow. 'be safe?' what does that mean?
she poses the question to minhyun a couple minutes later after letting him in and ascending the stairs to the roof. he shrugs, says he doesn't know. then they sit up on the roof, talking about anything that comes to mind. after a couple of hours, minhyun says he should probably get going. kotone sees him out. they say their goodbyes, and there's a pause. they look at each other. but nothing happens. now isn't the time for a potential scandal. but from then on, they act more lovey-dovey together, for lack of a better word. they kiss at some point, but there's no pomp and circumstance to it, nor the ones that follow.

relationship
"we're acquaintances."
"still acquaintances."
"he's my friend."
"it's none of your business. stop asking."
"he's something i didn't know i needed."
– a collection of quotes by 林琴音 from 2012 to 2016, in chronological order
the end they debate about going public, because technically, they've never been on a date before. not in a conventional sense. they don't even refer to themselves as boyfriend and girlfriend. so, they debate about that: do they go out and then have pledis release a statement so that there's evidence (and by extension it doesn't completely seem like a media play)? do they go on a date to feel things out and not release a statement? what if a news company leaks it? people are bound to get mad.

the rest is up to you guys. all i ask is that if you have them break up /weeps pls dont/ they at least stay friends. not close necessarily, but like.... still definitely friends (although i feel like if this theoretically happened, kotone would be way more closed off than she already is and a lot more difficult to get to know / earn trust from n that makes me sad).

love trivia!
・ when looking at their respective ideal types (as stated to the public), minhyun is actually a perfect example of kotone's, while kotone doesn't fit minhyun's ideal type at all; she doesn't like cooking and isn't interested in fashion. of course, to the public, kotone is fashionable, so to them she's half-way there.
・ minhyun always makes kotone stand on her tiptoes when she wants to kiss him because he refuses to crane his neck at all 。゜(`Д´)゜。 so mean so rude
・ even though she is older than him by nearly five months, kotone has explicitly told minhyun to not call her "noona" because she feels using honorifics automatically creates a power imbalance in a relationship. as a result, they also speak to each other with the same level of formality (aka not formal at all).
・ both avid fans of their respective groups. between the two of them, kotone tends to promote nu'est more because the group needs the exposure.
・ because kotone and minhyun have been so close for so long, people think they've been intimate with each other, and not just in a cuddly sense. so, when they go off alone together, assumptions are made (see: seyeon telling kotone to "be safe"). when asked what they've done, neither has given a definite answer.
・ he's low-key jealous of taehyung and minkyeong, even though kotone has told him that the way she sees them is completely different from what she thinks of him. but to him, it's the fact that her personality doesn't do a complete 180. like sure, she's different with him compared to others—much more open and talkative, mostly—but it's sort of how he's always seen her. there's a reason for that, though: he never did anything to piss her off, so she's never had a reason to be hostile to him.
・ three of the plants kotone keeps in her room (one of a few aloe vera, an echeveria nodulosa, and an aerangis) are gifts from minhyun.
・ when describing her relationship to minhyun (as of 2016), kotone uses words like "unique," "distinctive," or "special," which further reiterates just how much he means to her.
・ they can't think of a time when they've ever argued about something, which leads many people to question just how healthy their relationship is. the truth is, they do agree on a lot of things, but if they have a disagreement, no matter how small, they'll talk about it until they come to a conclusion that both of them are happy with. (tl;dr constantly fighting with your s/o doesn't mean you "care more," so don't listen when people tell you that fighting is "natural" for a couple).
・ kotone's favorite sound in the entire world is minhyun's giggle. it's the purest sound she's ever heard, and she lives for it. she also loves the sound of his voice. not just his singing voice (which is lovely) but also his speaking voice.

love statement
・ "love paint (every afternoon)" by nu'est (whOOPS)
・ the progression of naoko and kizuki's relationship, as described by naoko, in norwegian wood by haruki murakami
*sirens blaring* warning!!! if you're a young'un and uncomfortable with mature situations, please don't look up or read norwegian wood until you feel you can handle it!! the book is legitimately described by wikipedia as a "nostalgic story of loss and burgeoning uality." i mean it's murakami so there's more to it than that, but still. don't read it!!! you'll be uncomfortable!! anyway, if you're a young'un but do feel you can handle the book, still proceed with caution! i don't want anyone getting in trouble with your parents because you told them "the 18/19 year old on the internet told me to read this!" nah, man. not cool. for me or for you.
❤️ lucy, your aff vodka aunt
(p.s. when i compare mintone to naoko/kizuki, i don't mean that they were best friends and started being ually explicit with each other, it's more like.... they seamlessly progressed from strangers all the way to an all-encompasing love over the years, even if kotone doesn't acknowledge initially. oh, and the loneliness aspect, even if they aren't apart for too long. that was something that really stuck out in the novel for me. anyway, does that all make sense? i hope so.)

COMMENTS i screwed up trying to edit so i had to start a new app and transfer :)))) everything :))))) bye

on a completely different note, all the indented mini-stories (idk what to call them tbh??) are scrollable!! it doesn't look pretty, but the app as a whole was looking quite lengthy already, so.
QUESTIONS already addressed! but if i think of something else, i'll let y'all know.
CONCERNS i feel like i went overboard with the l/i section??? but it's pretty much what i meant for seolhyun and kotone, except i forgot to describe it in detail before. anyway i finished that section at like 3 am and didn't proofread, so not only will there likely be spelling and grammar mistakes, it's probably way more vauge and flowery than i intended. so just lemme know if there are any immediate changes to make

this became increasingly nu'est-centric even though svt is supposed to appear a lot instead whoopsies

SCENE REQS
・ mintone double / group dates with the other valiant members and their love interests ?? that's a cute thing people do right also probably with the older members because wouldn't it be awk to be on a double date with like...... seventeen year olds....... wwhkd (what would hayashi kotone do)
・ kotone developing as a character? i mean, she doesn't necessarily have to change completely but like.... maybe she adapts to her situation with the other girls and stops visualizing herself as a soloist who was forced into a group like she did initially. maybe she begins to like the rest of them, or just she becomes more tolerant of them....
・ (going along with chara development or whatever it is i was trying to say above) kotone being nice and friendly to mai off-stage
・ pledis fam stuff!! pledis fam is super cute (i know it's 'happy pledis' but tf kind of a name is that)
・ kotone on wgm with taehyung jk don't pls meets taehyung and becomes a literal screaming ho because goD he's so dang cute (or alternatively kotone gushing about kim minkyeong. or both.)
・ kotone finally saying something along the lines of "you've done well and i'm proud of you" to seokmin and he's all smiley n happy bc his teacher finally acknowledged his progress (do u hear me crn yig)
・ more late night / early morning mintone rooftop talks
・ pledis has kotone go to some sort of fashion event and she has to be extra fashionable and she's just like.... suffering.....
・ behind the scenes look at kotone on a drama or in an mv or smth???
more to come!
