appearance long, raven tresses frame a porcelian face decorated with large eyes, a button nose, and cherubic lips. with an ivory complexion completely devoid of large pores and pimples thanks to her mother forcing her to do skincare since she was a child, emily is your typical korean beauty, fitting the almost unattainable standards of being stark thin and having pale skin, a v-shaped chin and double eyelids. blessed with natural aegyo-sals, a high nose bridge and a small, unassuming nose tip, her features all coexist peacefully and complient each other, and thus she's often called a 'harmonious beauty' by the korean media. emily is pretty much all natural and all she's ever gotten were braces and skin whitening. currently she's contemplating forehead fillers, though.

standing slightly taller than the average korean woman at a hundred and sixty-four centimetres and being underweight with a mere fourty six kilograms, emily's figure is envied by many. though she has an obvious lack of curves, her limbs are long and she's slim in general, and so the stylist likes giving her tight clothes to wear, in order to accentuate her toned figure. since debut, emily has always kept the same black curls, and because of her innocent image, she probably won't get a change in her hairstyle anytime soon.

fashion sense onstage, emily is the innocent girl next door, forever donning dresses and skirts. pastel colours, lace, bows and soft floral patterns are what the coordis look out for when they're putting together her outfits. she gets handed ballet pumps or white sneakers quite frequently, and rarely wears heels. the only times she does is when valiant attends music awards or when emily herself gets to attend drama awards. she's rarely seen with deep or bold colours in front of the cameras. 

off stage, however, emily mostly wears black, grey and white. she doesn't necessarily like the monotone, she's just not very fashion savvy, and thus chooses to just wear the generic closet staples thtat are easy to match. for example, a photo of emily at the airport would show her wearing a white slogan tee, a black jacket, black leggings, and black sneakers. when shows invite themselves to valiant's dorm, emily can be seen in grey sweatsuits. one word to sum up her style? conventional.

elaboration emily is literally one of the most boring people you'll ever meet. at least, that's what most people think the first time they come across her. painfully quiet and demure, those who try to strike up a conversation after being attracted to her face give up soon enough as they get fed up at her curt answers and lack of response. she's just incredibly quiet in general, and even when she's with her closest friends, she still doesn't really speak up and tends to melt into the shadows and speak in her hushed tone. she just doesn't have any valuable opinions to imput, and finds no reason to speak. this also causes her to have a lack of spine and she's always pushed around by pretty much everyone. but even so, she tries to treat everyone with genuine benevolence, and even if her temper flares ( which rarely happens ), she still slaps on a smile. she just seems to be the perfect mary sue who stepped right out of a fantasy, and she's just incredibly plain. but this mary sue knows her problems: she knows she's not talented enough to be an idol ( at all ), and is incredibly insecure with herself, often penting up her emotions and words and letting people trample all over her as she weeps in her covers reading negative comments about her. furthermore, when emily does speak, she doesn't do so at the right time or place. she's pretty much incapable of expressing her feelings and emotions with words and when she tries to comfort people or negotiate, she just worsens the situation, which just gives her more reasons to not speak up. with a severe lack of confidence, she's very unsure about herself and tends to tread very carefully through life, but also overthinks a lot and can be described as paranoid. she lets valuable chances float by and away because of her tendency to think about all the consequences that could follow instead of living in the moment.

 

background emily kwon aesook grew up hearing the words "look at how pretty the child is!" "she's definitely going to be star!". as an asian in sioux falls who fit the western beauty standards as well, saying emily was popular at school would be an understatement. she was labelled as the nice and pretty one, but there was no denying that she was also incredibly ordinary and boring — there was nothing that seemed out of the ordinary, and everything except her looks were just... average. her grades were average, she had suitors who gave up since she was only a pretty face, and she was everybody yet nobodys' friend. many used 'mundane' to describe emily, and it hurt her, though she never showed it.

but all changed when eccentric shin 'estelle' jina transferred to emily's school. estelle, with her wacky  greyish blonde and green hair and loud personality, was a drama enthusiast, and when paired up to sit with emily, invoked the latter's interest in acting as well. both auditioned for the school's drama club together, and that was where emily finally found something that she was good at, something that she could list as a talent, for once, granted, she was nowhere as good as estelle, but it was the first time she'd ever liked something with a burning passion. when she was back in korea for a family trip back in 2011, a pledis agent scouted her. she didn't really understand korean, but her parents were there, and after a quick background check on this agency they've never heard of, they let emily audition. 

emily was elated her parents were supportive, but there was a huge problem blocking her way to becoming an actress: actually entering an entertainment company. to put it simply, pledis was not looking for actresses, and emily could not sing, rap or dance. assuring her parents they would groom her to be the perfect star and assuring emily she'd get plenty of acting chances if she debuted as an idol, emily stayed in korea to receive training. but the elephant in the room was that even though emily worked hard, she just didn't have the talent. she was a decent singer and a decent rapper, but if she debuted pledis would only receive backlash for debuting someone not up to standards. but then, emily was such a pretty asset and a pretty good actress, so not debuting her was impossible either. and this is how emily got stuck in the amber unit, as the rapper who can't rap, the rapper who merely talks with a beat, the rapper who's the odd one out.

• discovery of love (2014) as yoon sol; it was her first time playing second/third lead and although she actually got the role through auditioning, the decision received backlash as she was "just an idol, and a fresh idol actress at that! how dare the producers let her act with big names like jung yumi, eric and sungjoon?" needless to say, she exceeded everyone's expectations.
• kill me, heal me (2015) as heo sookhee; cameo, episodes one to four.
• oh my ghostess (2015) as shin sooae; the highlight of her acting career (so far ) and her heaviest role yet, emily almost cried when she received a call to casting. this time round, when she was announced as the second lead, most of the netizens said they were looking forward to her performance, some said her skills weren't good enough, but emily was elated anyways and cried tears of joy.

training years 3 years of training; 2 years supplementary traiing; 5 years in total.

training experience no one saw emily as compeition, and with her likeable personality, emily was well liked by the pledis trainees. no one every thought she would be able to debut, and as she was a trainee since 2011, she was respected. it's also probably why there was a huge uproar when people knew she was in valiant. but by then she was already of senior status so no one dared to cross her, though some did call her a manipulative .

but even though she was likeable, it doesn't mean her trainee life was easy. in fact, it was anything but. not talented in singing, dancing nor rapping, while she paid extreme attention and tried her best to improve, she was just...decent. average. a plain jane, as usual, and it was probably the worst time of her life as she cried herself to sleep pretty much every other night. she went off key really easily and could only sing two octaves; she could memorize dance steps really well but got tired easily and her moves weren't sharp enough; and she didn't attend rapping lessons. but then the trainers found out something: emily rarely spoke, but when she did, she speaks so fast most don't understand her. seeing a benefit in that unbeneficial trait, they placed her as a rap trainee, all the while taking acting and dancing lessons. problem solved, or so they think.
