Question: Adaptations

I've noticed that a lot of my favourite "fanfics" on AFF are actually adaptations of other novels, and that the names of characters are just changed (sometimes poorly, which I find to be annoying: if you decide to do an adaptation AND post it online for anyone to see, edit correctly). At first I found this...illegal? I mean, it's not the author's work so why is he/she posting something that he/she didn't even write? Just because you change the names of the characters, it's okay? And does that make me a bad person for liking the story, even though I will not read the original because I read the adaptation for the Korean celebs that the person who adapted the story inserted into it? <--That was such a run on sentence, forgive me, but I had no idea how else to phrase it...Can you tell I have issues with this? And that it's even harder for me because I LIKE the adaptations sometimes more than original work because the plot, grammar, etc flows better (if done correctly)?

Anyway, that's not the point of this post, so if you think I'm talking about you (my AFF friends) specifically, I'm not, and don't just roll your eyes.

So my actual question is how do you choose a novel to adapt? One you've read and liked reading? Do you own the book? And do you just take the physical novel, and type as you flip the pages of the story? Or do you find a pdf version and copy and paste?...That's a lot of chapters yo, if you do the typing and flipping pages one, and the story on AFF isn't even that long. At least, I don't think it is: I usually finish it in five hours or so, including YouTube video breaks, going to the bathroom, and eating.

LATE NIGHT MUSINGS WHY.

Yeah, that's what was on my mind.

Good night!

I don't write a story but I understand what you say since a lot of story that I like. I change it to my liking in my mind and I don't write it don't since I got this idea from this story and it almost the same. Sorry if I say back and forth.

I am against that practice.
But after have said this sentence, I wonder if fanfics can be qualified of adaptations too: same drama/novel/idols but a different story. It is quite not different of what you talked about: same story but different names! ^^

Maybe they thought nobody will read the novel.

Honestly, I'm wondering the same thing. The adaptations are way better than majority of the fics written here on AF and I can't stop myself from reading those. I guess if they give credit to the original author and story, it's not considered plagiarism. However, I have read one or two where absolutely no credit was given to the author or story. And the person putting it up here on AF acts like its her own work of writing.

Isn't it plagiarism if you just copy/paste a pdf and change names? O_O
Idk, when is it an adaption and when does it become plagiarism?
