My “Negative” Story Comments
I needed to get this off my chest, so here is where I'm posting it:
WRITERS, DON'T GET OFFENDED AT A "NEGATIVE" COMMENT ON YOUR STORY.
I mean, if it's downright offensive (calling you names for no reason for example), then maybe be offended, but when it's trying to be constructive criticism then why? I get that whatever you write is your baby and you want people to love it, except that's not reality. Any story posted publicly is subject to opinions of all kinds.
I'm saying this because I have posted comments on stories (here and elsewhere) that were perceived as negative to the authors. Definitely didn't think my comments would be taken poorly and was shocked to see animosity towards me about them. And when I explain myself, the author comes for me even harder which surprises me even more. Eventually I have to stop replying because the "conversation" gets ridiculous and it puts me in a bad mood.
This is something I have to work on: I can't control their emotions but I can control mine. In my mind, I didn't do or say or think anything wrong and yet someone wants to make it my fault that their ego/pride/writer's joy or whatever has been bruised.
Side note though, why would a writer only want positive comments? I mean, they're great, but the negative comments are so much more interesting. It makes you think and consider another person's perspective on your characters, your plot, your writing style. Of course there were times when I haven't appreciated it (as a new writer), but after discussing the commenter's issue with my story, I come to respect their opinion AND/OR the commenter respects mine. And after thinking about their comment for a time, I do end up changing something about my story, if it's something I can change.
This isn't the first time this has happened to me and I'm sure it won't be the last.
What has your guys' experience been with negative comments? Was it your story? Was it you commenting on someone else's?
