A Dialog(y)ue on Author Motivation
KaihleeLo tagged me for this and it’s a nice way back into blogging after I’ve been away for a bit, so thank you! I know there are a lot of other writers around here struggling with similar issues, and it’s always nice to know there are other people in the boat, so here’s my contribution to the conversation. Bare-faced Airport Gyu invites you in!
The Facts
Question 1. Be honest. How often do you write? Could you write more?
I write everyday—it’s just not always fanfic! Honestly, I’d love to give more time over to my fic writing, but that is just not possible. I’d have to say I’m all right with the time I have for writing now, although I’d love to have just an hour or two extra to dedicate solely to fics.
Question 2. How many stories do you have uncompleted, including the ones not posted that you are currently working on?
Way too many! Ideas pop randomly into my head and I collect them all in a Word file that, if it were paper, would be quite unwieldy. Potential titles, snippets of dialogue, character outlines—you name it. I just shove them all in and sample when necessary.
Question 3. How many stories are you currently focusing on and are you consistently working on each of those?
At the moment, two: a Gyu ty oneshot (a.k.a. my bread and butter) and the remaining chapters of Payment in Kind (a.k.a. the one that refuses to be continued), my multichaptered about a vengeful Sunggyu. I am definitely not working on them consistently; but then again, I never do. I write in fits and spurts. My muse is cruel that way. As cruel as my bias!
The Specifics
Question 4. What is the main story that you are currently working on, and what is it about? What is the main genre, the target audience, what theme is the story based on?
I can’t give too much away about my oneshot, because…well, it’s a oneshot, haha. It’s a dark one and full of , just the way I like it. Sunggyu does not come off nice in it, ha. The target audience is people who aren’t triggered by that kind of thing.
As for Payment in Kind, it’s, as I said, a multichaptered fic about Sunggyu taking revenge on a girl who deserted him several years ago and basically ruined his life. Again, it has some triggering bits. And I’m completely stalled on the latest chapter, which is where we finally find out just how she betrayed him. And in my mind, it made sense, but putting it down into words makes it seem like gobbeldy-gook, so I need to really rethink it all and I just don’t have the time or energy.
Question 5. What challenges are you having with your characters?
The one consistent problem I have with all my characters is I’m scared I’m writing them in clichéd, repetitive ways. I mean, I love damaged, hot, foul-mouthed CEO male leads, but not all of them can be that, can they? I do try to mix it up a bit, try to think of them from different angles, try to go in a totally different direction (Like, "Oh, he's smart? But what if he's awkward with girls"), but sometimes, my muse just wants to write the rich, y jerk! I wonder why…
Question 6. What challenges are you having with your story continuation?
Like I said before—sometimes your plan goes by the wayside! Which is I why I let my characters show me where they want to go. I do have rough outlines of most of my fics, but if there is an interesting detour, I take it.
Question 7. What are some things that you’d like others input on?
I’m always happy to hear people’s input; doesn’t matter what it’s on. Writing is such an isolating activity; you’re all alone with the voices in your head! It’s nice to hear what other people think, see if what you’re trying to say makes any sense!
