DESCRIPTION 

amongst all of the kicking, screaming and immature name calling, you can usually find william song in the middle of the mess trying to keep everyone in one piece (or at least keep all the pieces together long enough that he can put them back together later). originally hired as jaebum's personal baby sitter after he had one too many attempts to flee deerfield for the life of the rich and infamous, will has now kind of been promoted to be jaebum's (and jieun's and ahyoung's, if you squint) own personal assistant, keeping him and the business in line while the families figure out this mess of who gets to continue the legacy of honey pork.

though significantly older than almost everyone in the room, william is kind of the unnecessary third party that childishly whines as loud as the three heirs, usually complaining that he doesn't get paid enough to do whatever it is jaebum needs him to do and is guilty of breaking the 4th wall too many times with his exaggerated looks to an unseen audience. he knows he probably would have a better life if he wasn't working for the honey pork heirs, but then again life wouldn't be as exciting if he wasn't.

BACKGROUND 

despite being korean in terms of literal ethnicity, knowing the language and having a full understanding of its culture and traditions, he has no past history nor memory of the grand land that he should be able to call home. song joowan (later renamed william song) was basically left for dead on the door step of a small catholic orphanage in seoul on january 7th, 1989 before being adopted and brought over by a lovely american couple who resided in the quaint suburban town called deerfield a little less than a half a year after his birth. mary ann and ronald macdonald (with no relation to the franchise McDonalds, lets be real) were your cookie cutter representation of that young couple that really wanted children but couldn't have any because someone couldn't get it up of some complications, thus it was only natural for them to adopt a child to fulfill such void in their hearts.

william didn't really realize he was adopted when he was growing up, seeing as the only thing that his young and unsophisticated brain could comprehend was that he had two names and he didn't share the same last name as his parents (they didn't want him to lose his actual family name) and looked nothing like them, but it wasn't until the addition of his adopted younger brother jackson was when he truly understood the situation and (surprisingly, for the macdonald parents at least) accepted it without any qualms. he didn't pay any mind to the teasing other children gave to him about his parents not being his real parents because he was truly grateful to the macdonalds; without need for any sort of explanation he came to realize that being adopted by them he was literally saved from being lonely and having their genuine and never ending love was something most children in his situation— being abandoned by their familes— would never receive. you could say that from this it would explain why william was so well-behaved and appreciative to his family but mrs. macdonald could argue that this was just something her son naturally possessed and only grateful to have as a trait for a child.

other than that, william had a relatively normal childhood and upbringing. him and his family, including his little pest brother, had a good dynamic and were just like any other family that had expectations to eat dinner together at 5 every day and share their love of monday night football together. he was pretty average in everything he did (grades, sports, breathing, etc.) and didn't really have big aspirations in life besides having a well paying job and living a good life like his parents did. when he graduated high school he didn't have a clue what to do because he was always never the best at anything but never the worst. eventually, he went to the state university to major in economics since it was broad enough of a subject to find good jobs in but specific enough for him not to be stuck in an occupation that he would hate forever.

CURRENT LIFESTYLE 

despite graduating university like forever ago in economics, williiam has gone back to school to achieve a masters degree in the same subject for what he calls "safe keeping". while he balances such he works as what others dub as a "professional babysitter" for im jaebum, the sole male heir of honey pork. people scratch their heads as they wonder if this was what william aspired to do after achieving his degree and in response he sadly sighs because no he didn't want to be paid to pester a younger boy around to do a job that his grandfather proudly did for years before him yet he doesn't want to do but the fact that the pay is enough to afford a place of his own and help pay for his education, more exciting than if he worked in an office job in the city and his boss is (sometimes) too easy to push around and tease are some reasons why william even bothers to stick around in the first place.

even though his title says personal assistant— in which that implies that he helps organize jaebum's life of responsibilities of honey pork— he really is more of a babysitter as he spends 55% of his day nagging jaebum to do his homework (filling out necessary paper work and watching over the restaurant with a serious eye, like actually looking like he cares), 25% of his time supervising him (in case he tries to run away, again), 15% to making sure he's fulfilling his daily needs (eating right, going to sleep at a reasonable hour, confirming that he hasn't peed his pants yet), 3% threatening to tell on jaebum to mother whenever he doesn't comply to his tasks, and 2% reminding him that he's only here because his grandfather hired him and only wishes jaebum success and happiness. william is, more often than not, seen running and screaming around honey pork because jaebum gives him the stress he never wanted but everyone knows its better to see the older man like this because it guarentees that will is doing his job (by forcing jaebum to work) and if not, then that means something wrong has occurred. will really does have the potential to go work in the city in a job that is probably less stressful and better paying but he really appreciates having the opportunity to indirectly watch over the restaurant— semi vicariously living through jaebum's eyes— and also the opportunity was presented by park hangil himself prior to his death, thus he silently respects the deceased man's wishes in ensuring the male heir is well and working earnestly.

when william isn't freaking out about jaebum's and the restaurant's well being  (but more jaebum than anyone else) he is a single pringle that is constantly harrassed by his mother and other mothers to go find a good girl to marry and start a family before he is too old. unfortunately for them he hasn't found anyone to make that happen (girls are jerks), so he happily lives semi by himself (because jackson will come over too many times to count and crash there when he's annoyed at their mother because he's not going to school) and tries to relax and do menial hobbies like watch everything on netflix and complete a 1000 piece puzzle by himself. but that really never happens. too many people call him out to (unwillingly) leave turtle shell of a home to help them with tasks that require his asstance thus extending his role as a babysitter just for jaebum to everyone's babysitter.

TRIVIA

: you can call him either william or will. jaebum and jackson love to call him wilbert to piss him off and only mrs. macdonald can call him joowan.
: when william was old enough to comprehend and embrace his korean side his parents enrolled him in a language course to help him connect with his roots. he's fluent in korean and actually upholds a lot of the culture and traditions in his personal life (he really likes the concept of honorifics, so he expects those to call him hyung/oppa, and respect him even though in some situations he's inferior to others). the only downside to this is that will has never been to korea and wishes to go some day but he doesn't have that kind of money or plan to go there yet.
: will sort of engulfs consumes 4 coffees before 12 pm out of habit from being in university and time pressuring work. it's a good excuse to use when people ask why he's so anxious all the time (and not blame jaebum for his continuous anxiety).
: its confirmed that will has high blood pressure from working for jaebum. it only gets worse with jieun and ahyoung added into the equation. pray for him.
: people have mistakened william for being the heir of honey pork for the amount of work he puts into forcing jaebum to work and sometimes he goes along with it because hey why not? but if he was in any of the three's position he'd rather not want to be the heir of such a restaurant. sorry uncle hangil.
: don't ever ask him if he's okay. he may not stop talking about his 99 problems.
 

RELATIONSHIPS

: jackson wang adopted little brother 22 years old

related not by blood but by legal ties, both were adopted from different east asian countries (william is from seoul, jackson from hong kong) and brought together (with minimal say) by the MacDonald's. people have no problems identifying the two as siblings as they are ones to constantly bicker about anything and everything possible, usually with jackson shouting william's name a million times before saying ' i hate you', but at the end of the day they will admit that they really love one another. jackson's a well known martial artist and currently a taekwondo teacher.

if you haven't figured it out already (but really, it's been stated at least five times before you got to this section) jaebum is william's modest boss. over the four years that the two have known each other their relationship has become similar to one of a prince and his guard: jaebum is constantly whining about the responsibilities of honey pork and william is behind him nagging him to just do it already before patting him on the back and running to get him some coffee and paperwork that jaebum has to sign. jae thinks will is cool but won't ever let him know bc #nope.

: lee jieun head chef of honey pork / aka satan 23 years old

knowing jieun a little longer than jaebum because who didn't know lee jieun, william admits that he likes her the most amongst the three heirs of the honey pork brand. granted, sometimes he thinks she's the devil with the amount of death threats he gets because he has to cross her path in the kitchen to get some things for jaebum, but he admires her dedication to the restaurant and her mission to uphold tradition. he secretly dotes on her when jaebum isn't looking, patting her head and complimenting her food, and jieun sort of rolls her eyes unknowing if he's being genuine or not.

: kim ahyoung fusion chef / california princess 24 years old

like almost everyone else in deerfield who is surprised at the existance of ahyoung in the competition for the throne of honey pork, william is the least familiar with her because she's steers clear of everyone for the sake of trying to focus on getting the title of heir of the company. when she does take a second to get to know the residents of deerfield and catches wind that will is directly associated with jaebum, she tries to sweet talk her way into his graces, but somewhat fails because he is tougher to crack than he leads on to be (that and ahyoung isn't as slick as she claims to be).
 

: annabelle kim tourist / primaballerina 22 years old

somewhat irrelevant to everyone's life since she's a nobody in deerfield but slowly becomes relevant due to her affiliation with jaebum, william just sees her as another person he figures he has to take care of as the fish out of water annabelle life is somewhat like him: absolutely has no chill and probably should finds some unless she wants to spontaneously blow up. at first she mistakens him as jb's maid but after a couple awkward conversations he finds her confining all of her woes to him as he feeds her more carbs than necessary in her diet.

" whooooooo are you? who who who who? " william sings the iconic song by the band the who to his bemusement, as the interviewer sighs deeply at the elder's antics, " no? not a fan of that? okay, nevermind. anyways i'm william song; will for short, wilbert if you're an , and joowan if you're my mother. " he grins for probably the last time in this interview, " a pleasure to meet your acquaintence. i'm being paid for this, right? "

WHAT IS HONEY PORK TO YOU?

" honey pork is practically my life. it was there for me when my mother didn't want to cook, and times when we didn't want to eat my dad's cooking; ever since befriending jaebum the restaurant has been like a second family to me, like a family you kind of are done dealing with but know they have your back when you've done something stupid again. " will shrugs at the memories he's gained in his life, reminiscing when he actually enjoyed the food and wasn't a literal slave to it.

will raises an eyebrow at such a question before humming to himself— deep in thought,
" neurotic overworked slave? always paranoid caretaker? desperate for cash? slowly going crazy? " he lists off, completely ignoring the parameters of the question, " i think you know what i'm trying to say here, right? "
 

WHAT IS DEERFIELD TO YOU?

" home sweet home " he simply states, " i don't think we need to go any further than that. "
 

WHO IS JAEBUM IM?

" tehcnically he's my boss. " will raises a finger, looking at some imaginary camera in front of him instead of the interviewer across from him, " but let it be known that i'm still the hyung in this relationship. that prince of pork has nothing on m— wait come again? " promptly interrupted by the interviewer who makes a claim that his answers may or may not be shared with the heirs of honey pork, will stares at the imaginary camera once more with a dead look on his face, " forget what i said a second ago. jaebum is my boss, i'm his personal assistant and i really lo-o-ooove that little squirt like my own brother. except he isn't chinese and isn't anywhere as loud as jackson is. "

WHO IS JIEUN LEE?

" jaebum's older cousin, but not the eldest. " william states in a matter-of-fact tone, "she's actually really cute but she definitely doesn't believe or trust in me because i work for jaebum. honestly, if i had known about this whole competition business earlier i probably would've sided with her since her cooking is the closest to uncle hangil's. " he shrugs. after a few beats of silence william leans forward and coaxes the interviewer to come closer to him so he can whisper something in their ear, " don't you dare tell jaebum i said any of this, got it? "
 

WHO IS AHYOUNG KIM?

william mouths the word who? with a confused look in his eyes before the interviewer shows him a picture of ahyoung. taking a couple seconds to let the image sink in, he hums in understanding— slowly piecing together the two together, " she's the one that's from california, right? okay yeah i think i know her. she's the third heir and the wild card to this unnecessary mess." he pauses, " she stepped on my foot when she first walked through honey pork. it hurt so so much. "
 

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FOOD, DISH, OR RECIPE?

" tonkatsu! breaded pork cutlets. " he immediately responds, no hesitation evident in his enthusiasm, " i just really like them iguess it comes from mom feeding me a lot of pork chops and fried chicken that combining the two sort of works for me. except it's not really fried chicken. more like a deep fried chicken nugget. or something. " the interviewer stares at him and will shoots back an equally judging stare, " what? i'm a personal assistant, not a chef. no one should expect me to go into detail why i like food, i just eat it. "
 

FORKS, SPOONS, OR CHOPSTICKS?

" if you asked this to me ten years ago i would've said only forks. " will says with a bored tone, leaning his head on his hand, elbow firmly placed against the table, " but now that i'm definitely more open to different foods and ways of eating i think i prefer chopsticks more. but honestly i like eating with my hands the most."
 

WHAT DID YOU THINK OF PARK HANGIL?

immediately hearing the question asked william's face falls. the air in the room begins to grow stale and numerous memories of genuine grins and food full of love given to him. he wants to say something but every time he opens his mouth nothing comes out. the interviewer in front of him briefly asks him if he's okay but he shakes his head before he tries to recover quickly by showing a small smile, " wow you just went there. heh. well... where does one begin with uncle hangil? " will mumbles to himself, trying to piece a proper response about the founder.

" well first things first, i've known him best as uncle hangil. he never wanted me to call him mr. park or gramps like some of the other customers do, just uncle. i think its because i never really had any korean relatives because i was adopted so he wanted to give me some kind family here in america, or generally in life." he shrugs, "i did try calling him grandpa once and he got really offended, so uncle was the most appropriate term i could refer to him as. "

" before this business of me taking care of jaebum, my family did visit honey pork a lot because my mom didn't always have enough energy to cook every night and no one wanted to eat whatever my dad made, so we were regulars to uncle hangil and his family. even though he didn't work in the front— preferring to hide back in the kitchen— we never left without saying hi to him and thanking him for the meal. " will pauses, thinking back to a random memory when he was younger, laughing to himself at something funny that had happened without discussing it with the interviewer, " he was truly a great man and so kind. he was apart of everyone 'family somehow. "

WHY IS HONEY PORK SO SPECIAL?

" there's literal crack in the pork. " he states bluntly, " no i'm kidding. what makes the food and the restaurant so special is attention to detail and dedication to the craft of food. it was really evident when uncle hangil was alive. jaebum, jieun and ahyoung kind of have the idea but it's not the same as when uncle was here taking care of everything. "
