Just One Day

The Promise

[June 2012]

Taehyung

In a blink of an eye, six months have passed since I met Jaeli. I never met someone who had changed my life so much, until her. She somehow turned to be my best friend that I would tell everything and anything to. There’s just something about her that has me wrapped around her little finger. I’m glad I chose to take a chance and ask if I could sit with her in that cage this past December. That cafe turned to be our favorite place to go and spend time and just talk.

“Tae? Hello, Earth to Taehyung?” Jaeli tried to get his attention by waving her hand in front of his face. Taehyung finally came back to his senses, realizing he was spacing out while thinking about how these past few months played out for him. “Ah, sorry Jaeli. I didn’t mean to space out, I just got caught up in my own thoughts,” Taehyung admitted sheepishly. “Geez, I wonder what got you up in the clouds. Well, nevermind, you space out pretty often anyways,” Jaeli giggled.

If only you knew it’s you that has me spacing out like this. Taehyung thought as he couldn’t help but stare at her beauty when she laughed. God did he love her laugh. It sounded like bells chiming in the wind on a sunny day with a gentle breeze.

Okay, maybe he was exaggerating, but to him, that’s what it sounded like to him. Maybe because he liked her so damn much.

“Anyways,” Jaeli started again, finally calming down from her laughter. “What I was talking about before you zoned out, was about your debut. Isn’t it so exciting to think that in a year you guys will debut? I’m so proud of you guys and how far you’ve come to get this far,” Jaeli complimented, sincerely proud of the boys’ endeavors. Taehyung couldn’t help but smile at her words. She was right, they did come a long way.

The seven of them: Namjoon, Jin, Yoongi, Hoseok, Jimin, Taehyung, and Jungkook. Yeah, thanks to Jaeli, Taehyung got to know Jungkook and found out that he auditioned for Big Hit Ent. as well and he made it into the soon-to-debut group: Bangtan Sonyeondan. The six were practicing for years, and now with Jungkook, the group felt complete. He was the missing puzzle piece. To think that in a year, the seven of them would up on the stage, taking on the world, mic in hand, heart on their sleeve, and passion in their eyes.

Jaeli wasn’t left out of the equation though. After learning that the boys were actually going to be part of a boy group, she wanted to support them in some way. Without the boys noticing, she applied to intern at Big Hit, that way she can still hang out with the boys but also gain some work experience.

One day, the boys walked out of their practice room to see Jaeli cross their path without noticing them. In her hands was paper work that seemed like they needed to be delivered somewhere. The seven stood there, unable to move as they couldn’t quite process what was happening yet. As they stood there, Jaeli finally walked by them again, empty handed this time. As she walked, she noticed something from the corner of her eye. She halted her step and turned to look at what caught her eye.

There were the seven boys, mouth agape with eyebrows furrowed. They were still trying to process the situation. “Oh, hey guys! Do you need anything? I’m actually going on a coffee run right now,” Jaeli spoke, acting as if this wasn’t out of the ordinary. “Jaeli… uh, but, I mean… what are you doing here? You told us you were at work,” Jin mumbled out, the only one able to get himself to ask, as the others still didn’t know how to react. “Silly Jin oppa, I am at work! That’s why I’m doing a coffee run. What? Why are you still looking at me that way?” Jaeli questioned, tilting her head in pretended confusion. “Oh! Did I forget to mention, I applied to intern here for awhile. Huh, must of slipped my mind!” Jaeli giggled at her surprise joke to the guys. Finally able to wrap their minds around what has happened, they couldn’t help but bounce in excitement that one of their best friends was able to still be around.

Returning to the dorm after walking Jaeli home, Taehyung opened the door and immediately headed to the unoccupied space on the couch. All the members were huddled in the living room playing games. Right as his body made contact with the couch, he let out a content sigh. “Did you safely return the princess to her castle, knight Taehyung?” Namjoon joked, turning his head to look at his group member who looked quite elated. However, once Namjoon finished his question, his face fell.

“Oh please hyung, I’m more of a jester in her royal court. Ahh, I wish I was her knight in shining armor, but she only sees me as a friend,” Taehyung confessed, finally letting out the thoughts in the back of his mind. “And why on Earth do you think that she doesn’t like you back?” Yoongi pitched in, as he turned around to face Tae and join in on the conversation. Eventually the rest of the boys decided to pay attention to their brother, video games abandoned for the time being.

“Oh come on guys, Jaeli hasn’t showed any signs of liking me,” Taehyung whined. “Well Tae hyung, I’m sure you realized this by now but Jaeli never mentions her love life. Anything else she’s open about with all of us,” Jungkook mentioned. “There’s just one thing she won’t tell you guys, and that’s who she likes. It’s not because she doesn’t trust you guys, it’s more because it’s one of us and she’d rather not tell all the friend’s of the guy,” Jungkook finished.

At that, Taehyung felt a bit better. “Think back a bit Tae. Are you sure that Jaeli hasn’t shown interest in you at all?” Jimin asked. “Well, acutally…”

Jaeli

“Grr, where is that guy?!” I muttered to myself, tapping my foot in impatience as I waited in front of the fountain outside of the movie theatre. “Jae! Sorry I’m late!” Taehyung ran up to me, panting and taking a few deep breaths to get back his normal heart rate. “Geez Tae, good thing we got our tickets ahead of time,” I said, standing up ready to head into the theatre.

Before I could take a few steps, I felt a hand wrap around my wrist and spin me around. “Hey… you look really pretty in that dress. Pastel suits you,” Tae said looking right into my eyes. My heart felt light at this compliment. Blinking a bit, “W-welll, you don’t look bad yourself… Ah! Anyways, we better head in and find good seats,” I stammered, rushing away from him as I felt my cheeks get warmer, especially after hearing his laughter trailing behind me,

[Present]

“And you say that’s not a date? She even blushed! That has to mean something!” Hoseok brought up. “That’s what I thought too, but still, later that night, it hardly felt like a date! We went to get burgers after! Hardly a food to eat out on a date, and besides, right after the movie, everything felt like it went back to normal!” Taehyung argues.

“Geez Tae, she chose burgers because she knows you like them and you were craving them the entire week,” Jimin spoke out, hands in the air, sign that he was getting frustrated at his own friend’s obliviousness. “Well.... but still…”

[Two Weeks Ago]

“Ah, that was such a great movie! Don’t you think Tae Tae?” Jaeli asked Taehyung for his opinion. He finished up chewing his bite of his burger and swallowed before answering. “Ha, please Jaeli, I saw you dozing off midway,” he snickered. Jaeli reddened, she was caught. “It was only for that one part! I payed attention to the rest of the movie!” she countered back. Tae just rolled his eyes and smirked at her. The two of the continued to converse normally. Once finished with their food, they decided to go to their favorite place, the cafe.

“You know, today was actually the most fun I’ve had in a long time. Thank you Taehyung,” Jaeli admitted shyly, glancing at him before focusing on her drink. “I agree Jae. We should do this again,” Taehyung suggested. Jaeli nodded in approval, looking up to smile at him. He gave his signature rectangular smile, Jaeli’s favorite smile. The smile she’s come to love.

The two fell into a comfortable silence, appreciating each other’s presence and reflecting on their day. Jaeli decided to lift her head and look out the window. Noticing that she wasn’t paying attention, Taehyung mirrored her position, head resting on the palm of his right hand, but instead of looking out the window as well, he was looking at Jaeli. He was openly staring at her, with a sincere look of adoration. A small smile formed on his face. Soon enough, Jaeli also had a small smile on her face. Thinking she must have thought of something nice, Taehyung didn’t think much of it.

Little did he know that earlier, Jaeli’s eyes shifted from looking outside to looking at Taehyung’s reflection through the glass. That smile that came across her face was because she saw that Tae was looking at her with affection and once she saw him smile, she couldn’t help but smile too. But Tae didn’t know about any of this, he was too busy admiring her beauty.

And somehow, both of them thought the same thing, maybe it meant something.

Just one day, if I can be with you…

[Present]

“Taehyung, you’re right. She doesn’t like you. How can she when you’re a complete idiot.”

    “HYUNG!!!”
