Bright, warm colors of reds and greens filled the night sky. Christmas was approaching and anywhere I went, I could feel the festive vibe. As I strolled through the city, I could hear the familiar tunes playing on repeat during this time of year.

 

My feet led me to my regular cafe to grab a drink during this cold season. As I opened the glass door, the scent of coffee entered my nostrils. I shuffled to the cashier, prepared to recite my regular order.

“The usual, Jaeli?”

 

My eyes drifted to the cashier to see my long time best friend, Jungkook, as the one who spoke.

 

“Since when did you work here?” I blurted, rather puzzled to see him in such a position. I would never imagine him working in a cafe.

 

“Since last month, silly. I thought I might as well get a job so I can keep spoiling my favorite girl. It’s actually my uncle’s cafe, so it was easy for me to get this job,” Jungkook spoke nonchalantly, throwing in a wink as he said “favorite girl”. Seeing my eyes wide and mouth agape, he couldn’t help but chuckle.

 

“So that’s why you never hang out with me nowadays and if you do, it’s not as long as we usually do,” I pouted slightly. “Well,” I huffed, “I can’t complain if you’re doing it to keep me spoiled,” I grinned knowing that he did it for me. Trust me we’re just best friends, we like spoiling each other.

 

Ever since Jungkook and I met in middle school, we have been inseparable. My mother adores him, his parents see me as their own daughter. He’s always been there for me, protecting me from bullies, or beating up my exes once he finds me at his porch in tears. I’ve always been there to keep him focused in school and to provide him entertainment 24/7 since he seems to always get bored easily. We are pretty much joined at the hip and I couldn’t ask for a better guy to call my best friend.

 

“Yeah, yeah. Don’t let it get to your head,” rolling his eyes. “Go ahead and sit at our usual table, I’ll bring your hazelnut coffee with two pumps of caramel.” He said absentmindedly while getting to work on my drink. Of course he memorized my typical drink. We always went to this cafe after school or on weekends and talked for hours about everything and anything.

 

Before turning away from the counter, I left the appropriate amount of money for the drink. I quickly went to our table and took my seat by the window. I found myself watching people rush down the streets. Probably to do some last minute shopping. I silently chuckled at the passerbyers, glad that I already completed my present scavenger hunt last week, while everyone else was procrastinating. I didn’t have many people to buy for anyways. Just my parents, Jungkook, his family, and my dog, Kiro.

 

Before I knew it, Jungkook came over with my drink, smiled at me, ruffled my hair, then proceeded back to the front of the shop. I gazed at the steam emanating from the hot beverage, as the heat swirled upwards slowly disappearing into the air. I slightly leaned forward in my seat to softly blow on the drink to cool it down a bit, while stirring occasionally. As I heard the current song reach its end and the next song fade in, I grasped my drink to take the first sip. As I brought the coffee to my lips, I could feel the heat from the white cup spread gently to my hands, defrosting them from their frigidness. I closed my lips as I sipped, appreciating the flavor.

 

Ah, just how I liked it. Satisfied with my sweet drink, I slowly pulled the drink away to place back down into the small, ceramic plate the cup came on. As I did so, I opened my eyes, maybe at the perfect time, to see the entrance to the shop open. As it did, my eyes couldn’t help but widen as they wanted to take in as much of the man who just entered. He looked around the shop, slowly turning his gaze closer to my area. Just as we made eye contact, I heard the song in the background loud and clear.

 

“Last Christmas, I gave you my heart”
