Lu Han checks the unconscious child, probing his fingers on his abdomen, hearing small whimpers. The child has a fever, his black bangs sticking to his forehead. Lu Han palpates a solid lump on the abdomen. He guesses the condition as he doesn’t hear any bowel sounds. Obviously an obstruction.

“He complains a chest pain too? not abdominal pain only?”

“Yes, it seems he was so fatigued.”

The intern of the ER, who pages Lu Han upon sick child’s arrival, speaks. Lu Han purses his lips. He can see the child breathing shallowly. After checking pulse of the child he puts the diaphragm of the stethoscope again on his chest and listens.

 “Tachycardia, Arrhythmia…”

Lu Han mumbles to himself. This is so complicated than it seems. The child had vomited something green according to his mother and he has cried saying that his tummy hurts after eating pizza, celebrating their sports meet. Earlier Lu Han suspected colonic Intussusception but now when he is checking he surely feels there is something else, complicating the whole situation.

“Page Dr Wu.”

He thinks there is something wrong with child’s heart. He needs a cardiothoracic surgeon for that.

“Dr Wu is not available.”

Lu Han almost smacks his own head. How could he forget Dr. Wu has gone to USA for a medical conference?

“Page Dr. Oh right now!”

Lu Han further checks child’s vitals. He surely has something other than the abdominal problem. Lu Han child’s sweaty hair back. The skin is getting paler by every second. He chins up hearing hurried footsteps.

Dr. Oh, the famous cardiothoracic surgeon approaches swiftly, giving him a tinge of an overwhelming feeling, which Lu Han quickly brushes off. Sure the man has his reputation, but if you consider Lu Han’s skills and experience, he is also one of the best pediatricians in South Korea. Yes, he never was a child prodigy but over the years through his commitment and dedication, he has earned his place more or less.

 Lu Han thinks the frown that marred in man’s face is permanent because Lu Han has never seen this man smiles. They happen to pass each other on corridors and meet in elevators but Dr. Oh doesn’t seem to acknowledge Lu Han and Lu Han doesn’t seem to care at all. Oh Sehun may be one of the best of the best. But they both work hard to save lives and Lu Han believes that’s what count in their carriers.

As he steps into the scene, Lu Han scoots back. The blonde handsome cardiothoracic surgeon has his intense gaze on child, listening to child’s heart, checking his pulse. Lu Han inhales and starts unfolding what he knows.

“He is 6 years old, had participated to sports meet and then had eaten pizza, had vomited the food back which was greenish, complaining stomachache. Has a fever 38. Complained chest pain and seemed fatigue before collapsing. I noticed dyspnea, Tachycardia-”

“Arrhythmia. I see. Did he have coughing fits?”

“No”

“Prepare for ECG, EKG. CT for the heart and abdomen.” 

Sehun cuts off straightening. His gaze locks on Lu Han who has his eyes linger on the sick child, as nurses takes the lead to subject him to tests. Two surgeons tail the patient’s gurney. Walking to catch up Sehun, Lu Han hurries his steps. God that man is 6 feet and walks like a jet. Finally Lu Han matches Sehun’s pace.

“Dr. Oh, what do you suspect?”

“I don’t like to jump into conclusions but it seems he has cardiomyopathy.”

 Lu Han rubs his temple. This is too complicated to begin with.

“I suspect colonic Intussusception. If that is the case-”

“Let’s wait for the CT.”

They do wait for CT and CT in the abdomen indeed confirm Lu Han’s suspicions. Part of the small intestine of the child has collapsed into the lumen of the small intestine.

Sehun returns with ECG, EKG results and he observes the CT of the heart.

“He has hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.”

He concludes. Lu Han tilts his head to a side.

“Can you please elaborate a little Dr. Oh?”

The look on Sehun’s face is smug like he is mocking Lu Han. It’s not that Lu Han doesn’t know the condition, he does vaguely. But he needs a simple explanation from the expert in the field because this is more of his region than Lu Han’s. Besides he needs to know Sehun’s treatments to precede his own treatments.

“He has abnormally thickened intraventriuclar wall in his left ventricle side of the septum, obstructing the blood flow. I believe you remember the basic anatomy of heart. I am going to prescribe drugs to control his condition for now, to regulate heart rhythm.”

Sehun says like he is explaining to a first year medical student wiggling his eye brows. Lu Han resist the urge to scoff. Of course he knows the anatomy. This man sure is full of himself. But Lu Han opts to let it slide anyway.

“I really need to do an immediate surgery.”

Sehun his eye brows as if Lu Han is dumb to suggest a surgery, when the child is in such an unstable condition.

“You can’t do a surgery when his condition is this bad. His heart is weak Dr. Lu. You understand that right? ”

Lu Han shakes his head and rubs his face tiredly. He wants wipe out the poker face Dr. Oh is giving him, thinking Lu Han is some idiot. But Lu Han knows that he doesn’t have time for that. Patient’s life always comes first. He will deal with Dr. Oh’s ego later.

“Yes I do. But his intestine has collapsed to the degree I can’t correct by air or fluid . I have to open up and unfold the intestine. We can’t stand long or he will end up having a lot of GI complications, organ failures or worst, an infection which surely leads to meningitis”

Lu Han explains trying to convey how critical the situation is. It’s not like Sehun doesn’t understand, heck he is a genius of the century. He knows better than that. But again Sehun has a fair point which Lu Han can clearly see. But the child needs a surgery. Sehun nods his head and by judging the
