“What’s the condition?”
Lu Han flashes the torch in front of child’s pupils, opening his eyes. He is glad the brain reflexes are quite good. He checks patient’s heart sounds and bowel sounds, using the stethoscope.
“He had complained about stomachache and chest pain four hours ago, then during gym class he has collapsed. He was in school infirmary for an hour or so and then because of the traffic they got late another hour”
The intern in the ER, states.
“Six hours”
Lu Han furrows his eye brows. Boy’s mother who is standing cries louder.
“Doctor, what is wrong with my child?”
Luhan slings the stethoscope around his neck.
“We’ll examine and we’ll know. Don’t worry we’ll do as best as we can.”
He turns to the intern after kindly stating to the distressed mother.
“Prepare the child for CT right away. I suspect Hernia.”
Lu Han pats mother’s shoulder reassuring. He knows that he needs to do an immediate surgery for the boy. He pages Minseok, an intern as he knows that other pediatricians are not available at the moment. There is this complicated operation for a seven year old child, who suffers from a sacrococcygeal tumor and for that they need a lot of surgeons, mostly almost all of them. Lu Han voluntarily stepped out of the surgery even Dr. Kyungsoo asked to have his excellent skills for the surgery, stating that he should be available for other children if any emergencies occur. Lu Han isn’t wrong about emergencies.
He sprints to back to see the CT results. Minseok is already there watching the screen.
“Diaphragmatic hernia? How come is it so big?”
Minseok has his feline eyes widened. Lu Han bites his lower lip, observing the screen.
“Symptoms of absence of thoracic diaphragm appeared late, so it was discovered by a chance. Intestine has gone up into the chest now pressing on the lungs. As intestine is pressed to the diaphragm, I am afraid that most of it is necrotized.”
He pauses and looks at Minseok.
“We need to do a surgery as soon as possible.”
Minseok holds his breath.
“But he will have an arrest. It seems we are too late. It is so progressed, isn’t it Sir?”
He asks.
“But we have to open up the patient to see the chance. We can’t just spend any minute doing nothing. Arrange an OR and an anesthesiologist. Call the residents of the general surgery department. Minseok you will be the first assisting surgeon.”
Lu Han pats Minseok’s arm. Minseok gasps like he’s seen a ghost.
“What?”
“In the theatre, you and I will be the only pediatric surgeons, so you will be the first assisting. Now hurry Minseok.”
Lu Han pushes him forward and shoos him. He turns on his heels to prepare for the surgery.
“Arrest! Arrest!”
Minseok shouts as the vitals start to go down, just after Lu Han makes an incision on the abdomen, revealing blood pooling there. Lu Han calmly orders for suction putting gauze around. He eyes at the monitor.
“Vitals are crashing. I ca
