Fourteen year old Lacey Barnett stared up at the apartment she and her mother would now be living in. It was a big change for her, from a nice large house to something as small as that. She wondered if the bedrooms would be smaller too.
"Come on, Lacey, help out." Her mother muttered, moving past her with a large box in her arm. She could only afford little movers to help her transfer the furniture into the house, so Lacey and her mother had no choice to help out.
After hours of furniture moving, Lacey plopped down on a small couch beside her mother and looked around the living room/dining room/kitchen. They weren't separated by walls, no the minute you enter the apartment you would automatically see the living, dining, and kitchen rooms.
Lacey's new home was small, but it was cozy and enough to fit the little furniture they had.
As the two ate dinner, Lacey's mother asked her a question, "Lacey, do you think your father actually loves us?"
She shook her head almost instantly, "No. Maybe he did for the first two years, but then he met her and that accident happened." The 'accident', that was what she liked to call her supposed nemesis. Her mother had a nemesis of her own and so did Lacey.
Lacey exited the fancy car that her biological father owned. She saw the large house and felt jealous. Her father was doing perfectly well with them in a large modern house, while she and her family were living in a haunted house.
Her father kept a smile plastered on his face—which she wasn't sure if it was genuine or not—as he took out his keys and welcomed her to his home. She stepped in and the first person she saw was that damn woman. The lady's smile washed off her face when she saw Lacey's bloodied clothes that she wore on the shooting.
"O-oh my..." She gasped. "It's so nice to see you again Lacey, although you're wearing such..." She shook her head and gave her a bright smile. "Come on, you can borrow my pajamas. Dear, you must've had such a long day..." Lacey wasn't sure if her british voice was oozing with concern or if she was just faking it.
"Thanks." Lacey replied, hoping that she sounded at least a bit nice.
They ventured up the stairs and Lacey couldn't help but admire everything about the grand house. She was taken to a large bedroom, maybe it was the master bedroom, she wasn't so sure. Everything was just large in this house.
"You remember me right?" The woman asked as she handed her the nightwear. Lacey took it and noticed that it was a short lacy dress that she must've worn when she and Lacey's dad were having 'fun times' together behind Lacey's mother's back.
Of course I remember you, you're the damn homewrecker that ruined my family. Lacey smiled back and said, "Marissa, right?"
Marissa's smile widened, "Yes, I am! Now this doesn't fit me anymore, but I'm sure it'll fit you. So you can have it as a present since I haven't seen you in so long."
Yeah and I liked it better when we never saw each other. "Oh thank you."
"I'll take you to one of the guest rooms." Marissa led her outside and together they walked down the hallway. As the walked, one of the doors opened and Lacey finally saw her nemesis once again.
Brown eyes locked with blue ones. They stared blankly at each other, but anyone could feel the heated tension between them.
It was a few days before Christmas and ten year old Lacey had accidentally caught her father wrapping presents. One was a small dress fit for a young child, which she guessed was probably for her. There were two boxed jewelry cases which she guessed were for her mother.
But the one that caught her eye was the boxed up toy train set. Clearly it was for a child, but it was for a boy. Why on Earth would her father buy her a train set?
"Lacey!" She looked up and saw her father place a hand over his heart as if she had nearly given him a heart attack. "You scared me."
"Sorry, daddy. But... I don't really like trains..." She pointed a tiny finger towards the large boxed up train set.
She watched her father freeze up and his eyes momentarily widened. He stepped into her line of vision, covering the toy with his legs and picked her up. Taking her out of the room and closing the door shut behind him, he chuckled, "Oh well it looks like I'm going to have to return it!"
If she had just been a bit smarter, she would've connected the dots and realized that the train set wasn't for her. It was for the other child that she and her mother weren't aware of.
He slammed the door to his room shut loudly, causing Marissa to click her tongue. "Ignore him, Lacey. He's been so moody over the years..." Shaking her head in disapproval, she continued to lead Lacey to the guest room.
"Here it is," Marissa announced, opening the door wide for her.
Lacey stepped inside, but before shutting the door, she asked Marissa, "What are you guys doing here in Fredericksburg?"
Marissa answered, almost as if
