ℭhapter Two

Just Know That

She’s mad again, Lu Han couldn’t help but chuckle. He watch, amused as the little brunette tried to keep her temper in check when the group of girls she was waiting on refuse to acknowledged her presence for the nth time. A jab to his back made him turned his attention to Min Seok, his eyebrows furrowed as he nodded over to the table. “They’re your admirers Lu. You know they won’t let anyone take their order but you or Sehun and the maknae isn’t here yet.”

“I’m sure Maylin can do it.” he smiled. It was entertaining to watch and probably was one of his favourite past times. The pointed look Min Seok gave him made him sighed though, snatching his notepad from the counter, “Fine, fine.”

Maylin didn’t need to turn around to know that Lu Han was near. The high-pitched squeals from the girls and one of them checking their appearance through the reflection of her phone was more than enough of a sign.

She was ready for it. His taunting words, a poke to her back, anything really. But Maylin couldn’t help but flinch when she felt hot breath blew at her ear, “Thought you would learn by now princess.”

The brunette glared, finger tightening around her notepad and pen, “Your fan girls are such a pain.”

“Aww, is that jealousy I hear?” Lu Han smirked. He didn’t see the notepad that was aimed for his head before it was too late, “Just serve them.”

It was a little past four-thirty when Sehun had walked in with a pouting Jongin in tow. Jongdae grinned from his spot behind the register, resting his chin on his open palm and tilting his head to the side, “Another lover’s spat?”

“We’re not lovers.” Sehun hissed before placing his hand on Jongin’s chest to push him back, “And you’re not allowed behind the counter.”

“Let him Sehun, Jongin is practically an employee with how he’s always helping around.” Min Seok grinned, “You sure you don’t want a job here Jongin? You get to spend more time with Sehun.”

The maknae let out an exasperated groan, “Hyung, don’t.”

“It’s okay, my schedule is pretty booked.” Jongin smiled shyly, cheeks painted a pink hue as he glanced at the tall blond. “Thanks for the offer anyways.”

It was no secret that Jongin had been crushing on his best friend for a few years now. He even confessed on their senior year, blushing and stuttering all the way. Unfortunately, Sehun didn’t reciprocate his feelings and got rejected. Even so, they remain best friends though Sehun was now more aware of Jongin’s actions while the tan male was careful to never step over his boundaries.

Jongdae felt a little bad for his brother. He remembered how heartbroken Jongin was over the rejection. He didn’t have proper sleep for days and hadn’t had much of an appetite. Jongin’s mind was always somewhere else which lead him to bump into things or stumble. Even though the two were back to being best friends after Sehun had awkwardly tried to rekindle their friendship, Jongdae knew his brother well and he knew his brother was still hurting.

“You alright?” Jongdae asked when Sehun disappeared behind the kitchen door. The smile on Jongin’s face dropped a little before it curled back up. Jongdae noted how it didn’t quite reach his eyes, “Of course I’m alright, why wouldn’t I be hyung?”

“Jongin,” the older of the two frowned, “don’t you think you should move on? It’s been going on for so long.”

The tan male sighed, eyes dropping to the floor and his shoulders slumped, “I know hyung I just…I really like him.”

Something pricked at Jongdae’s heart over his baby brother’s dejected expression. Immediately regretted asking his question, he grinned playfully, hand reaching out over the counter to ruffle his brother’s hair, “Look at you~” he cooed, “All grown up and talking about love. Where’s my baby brother that used to come crying to me during a thunderstorm?” Jongin looked up with wide eyes before his cheeks burned red in embarrassment, “Hyung!”

Lu Han let out a sigh of relief as the last of the customers left.  Stretching his arms over his head, he made his way through the kitchen and into the break room, untying his black waist apron along the way. He slotted his time card and pressed on the ‘punch out’ button before collecting and stuffing it into his backpack along with his apron and skinny tie. He walked out of the break room, grumbling under his breath.

It was midnight, he had assignments and he was exhausted.

He was somewhat glad that he had the afternoon shift the next day. Lu Han was pretty sure he’s going to knock out once he’s on his bed and probably won’t wake up until noon.

Min Seok was done washing all the cups and was placing them to their rightful places when Lu Had walked out of the kitchen, “See you tomorrow Lu.”

“Yeah, see ya.” The blond nodded with a wave. He looked through his bag, making sure he didn’t miss anything. He didn’t know there were others still there.

“Kay, we’re good to go.” Lu Han glanced up. He saw Maylin walking over to Sehun, who was leaning against the wall near the entrance with two bags slung over his shoulder. Before Lu Han could question it, Maylin tried to grab one of the bags from the taller, who swatted her hand away, “It’s fine, I’ll carry it.”

“But it’s pretty heavy though, isn’t it?” Maylin frowned, reaching for her bag again, “The café’s accounts are in there and so are my homework.”

“It’s fine.” Sehun repeated, pushing her hand down. He tilted his head to the direction of the door, “Now let’s go. It’s already late enough.”

Lu Han watched as the little brunette sighed in defeat before nodding. She turned around and bid goodbye to both he and Min Seok before walking out of the café with Sehun in tow. They idly chatted, Maylin pouting and swatting Sehun’s arm. That was the last Lu Han saw before they disappeared from his sight.
