Three

Wasn't Supposed To

To say Tiffany was stressed was the least of it. All she did for the past week was go to school and go back to her dorm with the occasional going out to buy some food. Other things, she didn’t pay any attention to. She barely texted Taeyeon and the others too, just sending short replies whenever they ask her out to eat with them or for some study sessions.

Tiffany was assigned to present a huge project as a representative of her group. She’s never done this before. Despite her personality, she’s never spoken in front of large crowds, especially those with highly respectable people involved.

“Oh god, I can’t do this. I might forget everything and we’ll fail!” Tiffany shook her head and started banging her head on the table.

“Chill Tiffany, you can do it. We believe in you, just stick to your script! It’ll be over in no time.” Her group mate, Yenny comforted her.

“I’m just worried. If I mess up, your grades will be affected too. This is 60% of our grade!” Tiffany groaned. It was okay if only her grade depended on it, so if she makes a complete fool out of herself, only she would take the consequence. But no, four other people’s grades depended on this. She had to do her best.

“You won’t mess up Tiffany. Like Yenny said, just focus on your script and everything will be fine.” One of her group mates said.

--

“Tiffany!” The voice made Tiffany stop and look behind her. Jessica was slightly running towards her. ‘Was I walking too fast?’

“Damn Tiffany, I didn’t know you walk that fast.” Jessica was slightly panting when she reached Tiffany.

“Sorry, I was kinda in a rush to go back to my dorm.” Tiffany gave her a sheepish smile and started walking again, matching her pace with Jessica’s.

“You haven’t been having out with us these past few days.” Jessica pouted.

“Yeah, sorry for that, this week’s been hell. I’ve been preparing for a presentation for a group project. It’s like 60% of our grade so I have to do well. I’m presenting tomorrow.”

It was so obvious that Tiffany was really nervous and Jessica knew that. So she decided to lead the girl to a bench and let the girl talk some more. Tiffany just gave her a confused look when they arrived at the bench.

“C’mon Tiffany, you can tell me about what’s stressing you. It’ll help you, I swear. Spare a couple of minutes for me?” Jessica asked as she sat.

Tiffany gave in, “It’s just, I’ve never done it before, speaking in front of an audience.” The girl looked like a little puppy as she explained.

“You’ll do great. Just focus and trust yourself.” Jessica patted Tiffany’s back.

“Thanks. I’m just really nervous.”

“Hey! I’ve got an idea, I can come and support you!” Jessica said excitedly.

“You don’t have to Jessica, I’ll be fine I guess.” The girl tried to persuade Jessica not to come.

“Aw, you don’t want me there?” Jessica playfully sulked.

“No, that’s not what I meant! It’ll be great if you were there. But are you sure?”

“Of course I am!” It was final, Jessica was really persistent in going to her presentation tomorrow and Tiffany can’t do anything about it.

--

Hwang Tiffany, 8th. Their professor said.

Luck wasn’t on her side that day, she wanted to get over with the presentation but out of twelve pairs presenting, she was 8th and she was the only one who didn’t have a partner.

“Deep breaths Tiffany, just do as you practiced. You got this!” Tiffany began talking to herself as she proceeded to the back stage.

For Tiffany, time passed really slowly before her turn came. When the seventh pair left the back stage, she started feeling jittery and her hands started to sweat. Please, not now.

The sound of her phone distracted her a bit. It was a text from Jessica.

You’re nervous aren’t you? :P Relax Tiffany, you can do it! I’ll be cheering the loudest for you! :] -Jessica

And just like that, Tiffany’s nervousness died down. Jessica’s text really helped her a lot.

Thanks a lot Jessica! I’ll make sure to treat you dinner after this! ;)

“For the next presentation, let’s welcome Tiffany Hwang!” She heard her professor said. She put her things down and with a quick cheer for herself proceeded to the stage.

--

Things turned out better than she expected, the audience liked her presentation and for Tiffany, finally it was over.

Their group received an award for their project and it almost brought Tiffany to tears. All their hard work had paid off. People were saying she should’ve won best presenter but she didn’t care. She was just glad that it’s over and she can finally rest.

As Tiffany was exiting the hall, she saw Jessica grinning at her. She bid goodbye to her friends and walked towards the girl.

“You were amazing Tiffany!” Jessica wrapped her arms around Tiffany.

The blush on Tiffany’s cheeks was evident from the girl’s gesture.

“Thanks Jessi. Your text really helped me calm down.” Tiffany said as Jessica broke their hug.

“Jessi?”

“Uhh sorry, it just slipped. I meant Jessica.”

“No, I like it. You’re the first one to call me Jessi. And by the way,” Jessica gestured Tiffany to lean towards her.

“What?”

“Even though you didn’t win, you’re totally my favorite.” Jessica whispered and started walking away.

After coming back from her trance, Tiffany rushed to catch up with Jessica. As she caught up with the girl, Jessica looked towards her and said, “I almost forgot, you look beautiful by the way.”

The compliment made Tiffany halt, she was blushing again.

“Yah, you shouldn’t do that! That’s unfair!”

Jessica just giggled at the girl’s reaction. She took her by the hand and started walking again. “C’mon, you’re treating me dinner right?”

--

“Where are the others? I haven’t seen them all week.” Tiffany asked as they waited for their orders. They were in Tiffany’s favorite restaurant. The restaurant was simple, chairs and tables were arranged neatly for pairs or for groups. It had a very comfortable aura with the music matching it. And according to Tiffany, the food was great too. Jessica smiled as she took in her surroundings.

“Uh, just in case you forgot, you were the one who refused our invitations when we ask you to eat with us or hang out. Even for study sessions!” Jessica faked her anger.

“Oh yeah, I forgot. Sorry Jessi.”

Jessica smiled at the nickname. “I’m just kidding! But you better make up for it though, the girls miss you already! And I think they were at Sooyoung’s today? Taeyeon’s tutoring them.”

“How about you then?”

“I’m good. I’ve been studying in advance so I’m keeping up well with the lessons.” Jessica answered.

“Wow, you’re amazing.” Tiffany slowly clapped for Jessica making her laugh.

Their conversation was cut when a waiter served their food. “Hey Tiffany, here are your orders. Just call me if you need anything, okay?” The waiter winked and left.

“He winked at you!”

“That’s natural. He’s been doing it ever since I’ve started going here. Siwon and I are really good friends.” Tiffany explained.

“Just friends?” Jessica playfully asked.

Tiffany smiled, “Just friends.”

--

Dinner ended and Tiffany gave Jessica a ride back to her house. Just like before, the girl insisted for Tiffany not to since she knows the girl was tired from her presentation today but the girl didn’t budge and told her it’s part of her ‘thank you’ for supporting her.

Jessica sat on the curb when they arrived at her house. It was only 8pm, still early and her parents aren’t home yet so she didn’t need to get inside the house yet.

“Not going in yet?” Tiffany asked as she sat beside her.

“Yeah, parents aren’t here yet, it’s a weekend, I’ve got nothing to do, so why not talk to an amazing girl some more right?” Jessica smiled and looked her direction.

“But what if the amazing girl wants to go home already?” She teased Jessica.

“Then she should forget I called her amazing and go home already.” Jessica stuck her tongue out and laughed.

“Okay, I’ll stay.”

“Who said I was referring to you?” Jessica teased Tiffany back.

“I’ll be going then.” Tiffany acted like she was leaving.

Jessica pulled her back down. “Hey, I’m just kidding! You should’ve known by know that I like teasing you, you should get used to it.”

“I am, I was just playing.” Tiffany stuck her tongue out and showed the girl her eyesmile.

As she made herself comfortable, Tiffany asked Jessica, “So, how are you and Taeyeon?”

Jessica just gave her a small smile and shrugged. “I guess we’re okay. We’ve been texting often.”

“You still like her right?”

“To be honest, I’m not so sure now.” Jessica looked at the stars above them. ”Do you think she still likes me?”

“We haven’t exactly had that talk about you yet. You know, typical best friend confidant thing. We’ve been meaning to have it ever since you guys uhh started texting a lot but things got in the way so I don’t know anything.” Tiffany looked at the girl beside her and she couldn’t help but admire the girl’s features.

I’m so screwed.

“You wanna know something?” Tiffany asked.

“What is it?”

“I was in love with Taeyeon for a very long time.”

The confession made Jessica shift her attention to the girl beside her. Her eyes were wide and Tiffany could just tell that the girl was really surprised. Jessica couldn’t even talk.

Tiffany lightly patted Jessica’s cheek and joked, “Jessi, you can wake up now. You can’t sleep here, much less with your eyes wide open.”

Recovering, Jessica gave Tiffany a confused look. “Why didn’t you tell me before when I told you I liked her?”

“Taeyeon liked you and you liked her, who was I to interfere? And besides, I’m used to Taeyeon liking other girls. As long as she’s happy.”

“Wow, you’re such a martyr.”

“I have a feeling she knows though. She couldn’t be that dense to not know it.” Tiffany stood up.

“Hey, where are you going?”

Tiffany didn’t say anything and just walked towards Jessica’s front lawn. The girl lied down on the grass.

“I can lie here right?” She asked as she felt Jessica lie next to her.

“Yeah, because you’re crazy.”

“You’re lying next to me so that makes you crazy too.” Tiffany retorted as she turned her head towards the girl.

Jessica just grinned at her.

“So you’re okay with whatever Taeyeon and I have?” Jessica couldn’t help but ask.

“At first, I was wondering what did you have that I didn’t. You know, the typical jealousy stuff. As much as I’m used to Taeyeon liking other girls, it can’t be avoided right? But I got to know you better and since then, you were a 100 for me.” Looking at Jessica, Tiffany could feel her heart beat faster. She could feel her cheeks getting warm but she didn’t care anymore.

“Really?”

“Of course! You’re an amazing girl, Jessi, what more can I ask for as Taeyeon’s best friend?” Not able to handle it any longer, Tiffany turned her head back towards to sky.

Jessica didn’t say anything. She just smiled, touched at what Tiffany had said.

“By the way, you were totally bias though.” Tiffany suddenly said, still looking at the stars.

“About what?” Jessica was confused.

“About the best presenter, you said I was your favorite!” Tiffany lied on her side propping her left hand on the grass to support her head.

“But you are my favorite!” Jessica chuckled at Tiffany.

“Girls, why are you lying on the grass at this hour? You’ll get sick!” The girls’ conversation was cut by Mrs. Jung. They were so into their conversation that they didn’t notice Jessica’s parents had already arrived.

The two immediately stood up and Tiffany bowed deeply to Mrs. Jung. “Hi mom!” Jessica kissed her mom. “Good evening Mrs. Jung. I’m sorry we’re outside at this hour. We were just talking. I accompanied Jessica while she was waiting for you.” Tiffany said.

“Oh dear, thank you for staying with Jessica. And since you’re already here why not have dinner with us?” Mrs. Jung asked.

“Oh no, it’s alright Mrs. Jung. Jessica and I already had dinner before we came here. Thank you for inviting me.” Tiffany politely said.

“I see, that’s too bad. But next time okay? Jessica doesn’t bring friends here often. It would be nice to have dinner with you.” Mr. Jung said as he joined them.

“Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Jung, It would be lovely to join you for dinner next time.” Tiffany bowed to them again and showed them her eyesmile.

“You have such a nice smile Tiffany. And also, just call us Auntie and Uncle. Be comfortable with us. You’re a friend of our daughter, we consider you as our daughter too.” Mrs. Jung said.

“Thank you Mrs- I mean Auntie. I’ll be going now.” Tiffany said and bowed.

“Take care on your way home okay?” Mr. Jung said.

“I will, Uncle.” Tiffany bowed and bid them goodbye.

“I’ll wait for her to leave first Mom before I go inside.” Jessica said.

--

“Jessica?” Jessica asked as they stood in front of Tiffany’s car.

“Why are you calling yourself? Now you’re really crazy.” Tiffany said.

“A while ago, you called me Jessica?”

“But that’s your name?” Tiffany asked, confused.

“But you call me Jessi..” Jessica mumbled. It was soft but it was loud enough for Tiffany to hear it.

Realizing what Jessica meant, Tiffany giggled and pinched Jessica’s cheeks. “Aww. You’re so cute Jessi!”

“Yah, let go!” Jessica cutely whined.

“Okay, okay. To defend myself, I was in front of your parents.” Tiffany said as she let go of Jessica’s cheeks.

“They wouldn’t mind.”

“Then I’ll do it next time.” Tiffany winked. ”I better head back to my dorm. It’s late. See you around okay?” Tiffany leaned in and kissed Jessica’s cheek. Jessica was surprised. Even Tiffany herself was surprised.

After a moment, Jessica hugged her and said, “Thanks for today Tiffany. I really enjoyed it. Drive safely okay? Good night Tiffany.”

“Good night, Jessi.” Tiffany smiled at Jessica as she broke their hug and entered her car.

Before leaving, Jessica tapped on the car’s window. Tiffany rolled the windows down and looked at the girl.

“Don’t forget, you’re my favorite.” Jessica grinned and waved her goodbye.
