Day 29

Coffee Shop

Daehyun leaned against one of the pillars of the hall and hesitantly opened the contact list of his phone looking for a certain number. He tapped Youngjae’s contact and his number appeared on the screen with the button for the calling option bellow. The brunet sighed and tried to organize his thoughts before calling the barista. He was probably still angry with him so he had to choose his words cautiously.

He didn’t remember much after Youngjae’s departure. He sat again with Jongup and Junhong and asked them about what happened, but they refused to tell him anything, so after that they got drunk (well, just Daehyun got drunk) and left the place. Daehyun regretted it the whole weekend because he had to work on his two projects dealing with the headache and the sickness. He felt horrible, mentally and physically. And Youngjae never left his thoughts. He didn’t know the reason for his outburst that day neither why he was so mad at him. He tried to recall the whole conversation, but it was difficult because when it happened he was already a little bit affected by alcohol.

He ran his fingers through his hair and moistened his lips averting his gaze from the device. He really wanted to make up with Youngjae and figure out who that guy was and why he made him feel so bad, but he wasn’t good with that sort of things. He glanced at the plastic bag resting on his feet. It was present for Youngjae’s belated birthday. He knew that giving a present to a guy, who you met only one month ago, for his birthday, which was almost two months ago, was really weird, even slightly creepy, but he thought it would be helpful to fix the current situation. It wasn’t a great present; just two packets of high quality ground coffee, but he hadn’t had much time to think of anything better.

He took a deep breath and gathered the necessary courage to call Youngjae when he saw Yongguk from afar, walking towards him wearing his usual gummy smile and waving his hand at him. “Hey Daehyun, were you waiting for me?” he inquired elbowing his friend.

“Not really” he answered giving him an apologetic smile.

“Then are you waiting for the boss?”

Daehyun’s stomach twisted at the mention of her, but he kept his cool. “No, I’m not waiting for anybody” he explained.

“Then what are you doing here, dummy? Go home and get some sleep!” he said laughing softly.

The brunet smiled at his superior. “Yeah, I should, but first I need to make a call.”

Yongguk opened his mouth. “Oops I’m sorry if I interrupted you or something” he apologised scratching his nape.

“Don’t worry” said the brunet giving the latter a reassuring smile. “See you tomorrow, Yongguk.”

The elder hummed and showed again his gummy smile. “See ya. Fighting!” he encouraged before leaving.

Once Yongguk was out of sight, Daehyun unlocked the screen of his mobile phone and inspected Youngjae’s number again. He sighed unsure of what to say. ‘Where is my confidence when I need it?’ He looked at the time and it was already quarter past seven, which meant he had been for fifteen minutes trying to call the barista. ‘Okay, I’ll do it; I’ll call him.’ He decidedly tapped the call button and brought the phone up to his ear. He nervously chewed his lower lip, waiting patiently for an answer that never seemed to come. What if Youngjae wasn’t picking up the phone intentionally because he was still mad at him? He felt upset and disappointed since he didn’t even consider that option. He was about to hang up when he heard a weak voice in the other line.

Daehyun?” it was a nasal soft voice that the brunet couldn’t identify.

“Yes, hmm… can I talk to Youngjae?” he hesitantly asked.

I’m Youngjae.”

“What? Oh, err… I’m sorry, I couldn’t recognise your voice” he apologised.

Youngjae just hummed. “What do you want?

“Are you at work?” asked the brunet nibbling his already abused lower lip.

No. I didn’t go today.”

Daehyun opened his mouth surprised. “Oh. Why?”

Because I’m sick” he simply replied.

That’s why his voice sounded weird.’ The brunet lowered his head. “Then you are at home... Are you ok?”

Yes, I’m ok, don’t worry” assured the younger.

“Can I come over?” hesitantly asked the elder.

There was a silence for a few seconds until Youngjae spoke again sounding tired. “It’s not necessary, really I’m ok.”

“But I want to give you something” insisted the latter.

Youngjae sighed deeply. “Look, Daehyun, if it’s about the other day just forget it, ok? I’m not mad at you.

“That’s not it, I have something for you.” The barista remained in silence. “Please, Youngjae.”

After another short silence the younger sighed again. “Okay, you can come, but just for five minutes, ok?

A wide smile appeared on the brunet’s face. “Thank you!”

I’ll send you my address” said Youngjae before hanging up without saying goodbye.

“Nice!” blurted Daehyun after shoving his phone back inside his pocket. He was really happy because now he had his opportunity to make up to Youngjae. But a sudden wave of guilt travelled all over his body. The barista was probably sick because he went home on foot and Daehyun couldn’t help but blame himself. Youngjae said that he was ok, but he didn’t sound like it at all.

The brunet exited his workplace and hurried to the bus stop to go to Seorim Dong. He was about to get on the transport when he heard his mobile ringing. He took the device and unlocked the screen. It was a message from Youngjae with his address on it, but it didn’t say anything else. Daehyun could tell that the barista was still angry despite what he said before, but the brunet was determined to make up to him. The sound of the bus driving away startled him. “Hey!” He shouted trying to grab the driver’s attention, but the vehicle was already too far and the traffic noise muffled his call. He clicked his tongue irritated and checked the bus service’s timetable on his phone. Luckily he just had to wait for ten minutes for the next one.

On the meanwhile he decided to check his old messages accidentally coming across his boss’ texts. The last time she texted him was that Friday night, when he went clubbing with Jongup. He remembered reading the messages for the first time and feeling how his heart sank into the depths of hell. Youngjae was in front of him, so he had to keep his cool, but it was extremely difficult. After that he was so angry that he yelled at his boss a few days later. Luckily now he was almost recovered. Every time he saw her at the office he felt still hurt, but not as much as before. Also he used to think about her the whole day and he couldn’t even focus on his work, but now it was like they never had been together. He was happy to be getting over it so fast after the break up, but he also felt guilty because she seemed to be still in pain. Anyway, her slow recovery wasn’t his fault.

The sound of the bus stopping snapped him out of his trance. He quickly got into the vehicle and settled himself between a middle age man and a young woman, gripping tightly with his free hand the holding bar placed above him. The bus was quiet at that time of the day since most people using it were too tired to even talk, so that left the brunet alone with his thoughts. Why was he doing all those things for Youngjae? They weren’t so close and they didn’t even have similar personalities. Plus they met only one month ago. That odd feeling was bugging him, like a mosquito flying around you when you try to sleep. That surely never happened to him before with any friend, and he didn’t know how to react. What was he feeling to begin with? When they were together Daehyun felt how he wanted to interact constantly with Youngjae, as if he was in need of attention. Also he couldn’t help but observe the latter whenever he was able to, and observe his habits, his way of walking, the details of his face… It was creepy. He felt disgusted with himself for behaving like a stalker. But he wasn’t doing anything of this on purpose, so it wasn’t really his fault, right? Also he didn’t understand why the latter made him feel so nervous. The past Friday, before meeting him after a week without seeing each other, he felt as nervous as on his first date with his first girlfriend back in high school. He felt like he had to impress the barista and look perfect in front of him. Maybe he just wanted to make the latter feel envious, after all he made him feel envious once. Maybe Daehyun was a narcissist who needed to be told how flawless he was constantly. He preferred not to think that, but what else could it be?

Daehyun sighed and lowered his head trying to stop the flow of thoughts, which weren’t leading him anywhere. Perhaps he should consult the situation with Jongup, but he was too embarrassed. He inwardly shook his head to put aside the topic and tried to busy his mind thinking about work, but a few moments later his thoughts were back to the barista. Maybe what he needed was distance himself from Youngjae, not forever but just temporally; that’d be the best solution to stop his “obsession.”

The bus then abruptly turned left startling the brunet. He looked out of the window and he realised that they were already at Seorim Dong. He let go the bar and used his freed hand to take his phone to check again Youngjae’s address. His heart started to beat faster in expectation as he got closer to his destination. It was hard to accept the fact that he was going to Youngjae’s house, and he started to picture on his head all the possible scenarios. The bus finally arrived at Daehyun’s stop. He gulped down the lump on his throat and got off the vehicle.

According to the barista’s indication, his apartment was located on a white and beige building next to a bicycle shop. He had to turn right from the bus stop and walk down a boulevard to get there. He started to move, ignoring his nervousness, and walked as fast as he could. In less than three minutes he arrived at the barista’s apartment block, but he couldn’t remember his door number. Daehyun clicked his tongue annoyed and checked once again the address. ‘Apartment number 215.’ He looked up and searched with his gaze the number, but he couldn’t find it. After a few minutes of fruitless search he decided to go directly to the second floor of apartments and look for it from there. Indeed he found the correct door right away. He placed himself in front of the door and after a long deep sigh, he decidedly ringed the bell, waiting patiently for the latter to let him in. Finally Youngjae opened the door. He looked horrible; he was pale, with deep bags under his eyes, his plump lips completely dry and chapped and his hair messily covering his eyes. He was wearing an oversized white tee and a pair of sweatpants and he was wrapped in a quilt.

“Hi” greeted the barista with a weak voice.

“Hi” answered Daehyun trying to hide his shock at the latter’s appearance.

Youngjae moved from the frame to let the latter enter. “Come in, it’s cold outside.”

The brunet hummed and walked inside closing the door behind him.  He quickly glanced at his surroundings. The barista’s apartment was apparently smaller than his, but it was warmer and more welcoming, full of pictures and some plants and paintings for decoration. “How are you feeling?” he asked to the younger.

Youngjae sighed. “I’ve been better” he simply answered. “What do you want, Daehyun? I want to go to bed early to be honest, so…”

Daehyun pursed his lips feeling hurt for the latter’s coldness. “I just wanted to give this to you” he said curtly bringing the plastic bag closer to the barista. He suddenly felt like an idiot for going all the way to Youngjae’s house.

The younger tilted his head and widened his eyes. “What is this?” he asked. “When you said you wanted to give me something I truly thought it was a lie” he explained showing a slight smile and taking the plastic bag.

“It’s for your belated birthday” explained Daehyun.

Youngjae looked up and met his friend’s gaze. “Oh, no I can’t accept it, Daehyun” he quickly said giving back the present.

“Why not?” asked the brunet.

“Because we didn’t even know each other back on my birthday.”

Daehyun chuckled softly. “So what?” The barista simply stared at him. “Accept it, Youngjae, it’s just a small gift to say thank you.”

The younger kept his eyes locked on the latter. “Thanks for what?”

“Thanks for helping me and being so nice.”

Youngjae gapped at his friend and they silently stared at each other for a few seconds. “This is too much…I don’t know what to say…” the barista hesitantly opened the plastic bag and his eyes went wide. “Oh my god, thank you, Daehyun!” he exclaimed taking the two coffee packets and scanning the beautiful printed designs with a bright wide smile on his face. “This is too much… after how I treated you” he mumbled lowering his head. “I’m sorry, Daehyun, I’ve been a douchebag.”

The elder shook his head. “No, no, I’m sorry, this is also a present to apologise” he quickly explained. “Also you are sick because you went home on foot, don’t you?”

Youngjae nibbled his pink lower lip. “But I went home walking because I wanted to, it wasn’t your fault.”

“But I made you angry.”

The barista sighed. “No… I was already angry and I just took it out on you. I overreacted, I’m sorry.”

“Do you wanna talk about what happened?” asked Daehyun, his heart beating with expectation. He really wanted to know who that guy was and what exactly made Youngjae explode.

Youngjae left his present on a counter of his small kitchen and lowered his head. “Not really, but I owe you an explanation.” He coughed and wrapped himself tightly in his quilt.

“Are you okay?” asked Daehyun with a look of concern.

“Yes, but let’s sit first” answered the latter.

They sat down on an old couch, which was surprisingly comfortable, and faced each other. “Wait I’ll bring something to drink” said Youngjae standing up right away. He went to his little kitchen and opened his fridge scanning its contents. Daehyun averted his gaze from the younger and observed his surroundings instead. The apartment was small and cosy, with the living room and the kitchen on the same space and another two rooms that seemed to be the bathroom and the bedroom. It was indeed smaller than his apartment, but he preferred Youngjae’s since it at least looked like a place to call ‘home.’ Daehyun’s flat was dull and boring, with no decoration and ugly furniture, but since he didn’t spend much time at home he didn’t really care. Youngjae’s presence snapped him out of his daydreaming. “Here you are.” The barista offered him a can of soda and he gently accepted it.

“Thank you.”

The younger coughed again and shifted on his seat looking for a more comfortable position. Once he was settled he looked up and met the brunet’s eyes. “Err, first of all, I’m sorry again and thank you again for the present.”

Daehyun shook his head and waved his hand. “No need to apologise, Youngjae.”

The barista nibbled his lower lip. “Okay. I’ll explain what happened, then.” He took a deep breath. “Mm, well, you see, this guy…” he made a pause.  “He’s a friend of my ex.”

The brunet widened his eyes. “Oh.”

“Well, I don’t really want to go into details… but our break up was hellish; we ended hating each other, so when I saw this guy I felt like my stomach was twisting 360 degrees.” He laughed apologetically. “I know, I’m too sensitive.”

Daehyun pursed his lips. “No, it’s ok, it’s completely normal. Even if he was just a friend of your ex he brought you back painful memories.” He wanted to comfort Youngjae, he seemed to be about to cry.

The barista hid his face between his digits. “Yeah. And then he tried to flirt with me and after that he called me a because he thought we were lovers.”

The brunet gaped at his friend, his blood making quickly his way up his cheeks and his heart beating painfully hard. “What?”

Youngjae just nodded. “I’m sorry, you got involved.”

“But-” the brunet was about to ask why they were mistaken by lovers, but he restrained himself from doing it. “Youngjae, it’s okay.”

“And then you helped me and instead of thanking you I despised you, I’m so sorry” he breathed out.

The brunet hesitantly leaned towards his friend. “Hey, don’t worry, I understand.” He was anxious; he didn’t know what to say or what to do because it was his first time seeing Youngjae like that. But somehow he was happy because the latter opened up to him.

The barista raised up his head. His cheeks were flushed and his eyes were swelled, but he wasn’t crying. “I’m sorry, I must look like a baby” he apologised grinning.

Daehyun smiled too. “No, I’m happy to see this side of you.”

Youngjae sniffed and tilted his head. “Why?”

“Because I thought you weren’t human” he explained widening his grin.

The younger let out a light chuckle. “Thank you… Ugh, I hate behaving like a little kid.” He ruffled his own hair and sighed deeply. “I’m okay now.”

The brunet grinned and reached out his hand to fix the younger’s hair. Youngjae was startled at first but he didn’t move away nor complained about it. The barista’s hair was straight and smooth, almost like velvet, and his locks were messily displayed all over his forehead. Daehyun removed the hair covering the latter’s eyes and hummed in content when he was finished. He liked his friend’s eyes; they were as dark as deep water wells and he liked the bags which appeared below them, mostly when he was smiling.

Daehyun coughed awkwardly realising what he was doing and focused on opening the can of soda. He sipped the drink unable to meet the latter’s eyes and cleared his throat once again. “Well, how are you feeling?” he asked to break the silence.

Youngjae took a few seconds to register what the elder was saying. “What do you mean?” he asked.

“Hm, I mean if you still feel sick” explained the brunet.

“Right now I’m a little bit dizzy” admitted the latter.

“You want me to go?” asked Daehyun worried.

“No, no, no way” blurted the younger. “I mean, you came all the way here…”

The brunet showed a grin. “I don’t want to be a bother, maybe you need to rest.”

“Have you had dinner?” asked Youngjae ignoring the elder’s words.

“Yes” lied the latter. He didn’t want to burden his friend. “And you?”

“I had some ice cream” he replied like it was a normal thing.

Daehyun snorted in disbelief. “Really, your eating habits are horrible. You won’t get any better unless you eat properly” he warned.

Youngjae let out a light laugh. “It’s ok, I survived like this for three years now.”

“You’ve been living three years by yourself?” asked the elder a little bit surprised.

“Yep.”

“And your parents?”

“They live in Uijeongbu*. I came to Seoul when I started the university” explained Youngjae wrapping himself tighter on his quilt.

Daehyun nodded. “Oh, at least they live nearby.”

“Yeah, I see them frequently, but you must feel lonely” said the younger fixing his gaze on the latter.

“Well, at first yes, but now I’m completely fine” he assured. “Since I met Jongup, Junhong, some co-workers and you, I don’t feel lonely anymore.”

Youngjae hummed and hid his cheeks under the quilt, directing his gaze towards the TV in front of them. “I’m glad” he mumbled. “Hey, do you want to watch TV for a while?” he suggested.

“Hmm, why not” replied the elder humming. He didn’t really like the TV broadcast, but he missed having someone next to him to comment with whatever appeared on the screen. Youngjae pressed the on button and after a few seconds the screen showed an image.  Daehyun observed closely for a brief moments until he recognised the dorama that was being broadcasted. It was about a girl who married a man and after his death she had to take care of his children**.

Just like that they watched episode after episode, commenting cheerily what was happening and their theories about what would happen on the next episode. They argued over who was the best character and laughed together at every slight joke on the show. Daehyun couldn’t stop smiling, like his lips were permanently curled upwards. He was happy to be with Youngjae and happy to had made up with him. A few hours ago the barista didn’t even want to talk to him and now they were just sitting in front of TV like dorks having the time of their lives just by watching a silly dorama. He glanced at his friend who seemed completely focused on the show. Now the quilt covered also his head making him look like a kind of monk. The brunet had to contain a chuckle at the sight. Their shoulders were pressed one against the other and their legs were brushing, but the younger didn’t seem to care. Daehyun averted his gaze from the latter and focused again on the dorama.

After another episode the broadcast changed to a program about idols. Daehyun puffed out his cheeks not amused, but since Youngjae didn’t change the channel he decided to watch silently. ‘Wow, this is actually worse than I initially thought.’ He was about to ask Youngjae if he really wanted to watch that when he felt a weight on his shoulder. He glanced startled at the source of the weight to see Youngjae’s head resting against him. Daehyun’s heartbeat quickly became faster, but he ignored it. The younger was shamelessly sleeping on his shoulder, with his plump lips parted and his eyelashes completely shut. His breathing was deep and constant which meant that he was completely asleep. The brunet sighed unsure of what to do. He should go and let his friend rest since he was ill and dizzy, but he was afraid of waking him up; so he just sat there, scanning closely his friend’s face in spite of the bad illumination. Some minutes passed until he realized that his friend was slowly leaning his whole body towards him, like he was a pillow. Daehyun liked the situation, but he didn’t like liking the situation, so he shook his head and decided to go home before his loud heartbeat woke his friend up. He gently pushed Youngjae away and once he was free he cautiously laid his friend on the couch. Luckily Youngjae was still deeply asleep, so after putting on his coat, Daehyun turned off the TV, ready to go home. He watched his friend’s peaceful sleep once again, wondering what the latter must be dreaming about. His face was relaxed and his lips were still slightly parted. The brunet quietly walked back towards the couch and crouched down to level his face with Youngjae’s. He observed again the barista’s features and hesitantly brushed his cheek with his digits. His skin was soft and warm, the touch giving the elder goosebumps. Daehyun’s digits travelled all over Youngjae’s plump cheek until they reached his lips. He gently grazed the latter’s pink lips with his index finger, enjoying each second. ‘Such a beautiful lips…’

Suddenly Youngjae closed his mouth and moaned, turning his head towards the opposite side. Daehyun jumped startled, his heart beating so hard and fast that he thought he was going to vomit it. He stood still right where he was not daring to even breathe and trying fruitlessly to lower the volume of his heartbeat. He locked his eyes frightened on the figure lying below him, but Youngjae seemed to be still asleep. After a few seconds, the brunet finally moved, decided to leave that place. He quietly walked towards the entrance and turned off the lights before cautiously closing the door behind him.

Once he was outside he leaned onto the door and let out a deep sigh. “Seriously, what’s wrong with me?” he cried frustrated. “What are you doing to me, Youngjae?”

*Uijeongbu is where Youngjae was born and it’s just 20km away from Seoul.

**This dorama actually exists, it’s a Japanese dorama called Atashinchi no Danshi and I highly recommend you to watch it.
