Formal Tenses
Korean 101 with J.LeeI realized that my conjugations and tenses were all informal! What if you wanted to say this to an adult or someone older? Well here's the trick to making the sentence formal.
A. Present tense
1. Just add ~요
Ex. 하다, 만나다, 먹다, 마시다, 기달리다
해요-I do
만나요-I meet
먹어요-I eat
마셔요-I drink
기달려요-I wait
B. Past tense
1. Use ~어요
Ex. 하다, 만나다, 먹다, 걷다, 마시다, 기달리다
했어요-I did it.
만났어요-I met [someone]
먹었어요-I ate
걸었어요-I walked
마셨어요-I drank
기달렸어요-I waited.
As you can see, up to the ~어요, everything is the same. Just drop the 다 or 어 in the previous chapter and add ~어요 and it will be formal.
C. Future Tense
1. Use ~겠습니다 Same thing as the future tense from the previous chapter but get rid of the ㄹ bottom consonant from the word before.
Ex. 하다, 만나다, 먹다, 걷다, 마시다, 기달리다
하겠습니다-I will do it
만나겠습니다-I will meet [someone]
먹겠습니다-I will eat
걷겠습니다-I will walk
마시겠습니다-I will drink
기다리겠습니다-I will wait
2. Use ~게요 or ~을 거에요. You can keep the ㄹ bottom consonant for this one.
~게요 is for the words that need a ㄹ bottom consonant added.
~을 거에요 is for words that already have a bottom consonant.
Ex. 하다, 만나다, 먹다, 걷다, 마시다, 기달리다
할게요-I will do it
만날게요-I will meet [someone]
먹을거에요-I will eat
걸을거에요-I will walk
마실거에요-I will drink
기달릴거에요-I will wait.
