Bottom Consonant
Korean 101 with J.LeeQ: Why is the bottom consonant important?
A: Korean is all about syllables. Each word is one syllable. 가 나 다 라. That is 4 words just now and it was ga na da ra. But there's something missing. There's more sounds that are missing. How do you say gat? or nan? It will be boring if one syllable, one word just ends with a vowel. A bottom consonant allows a word to have a consonant ending rather than ending with a stiff vowel.
Q: Where do they go?
A: On the bottom of course. Hence the name, bottom consonant. For example
ㄱ+ㅏ+ㄴ=간
ㅅ+ㅗ+ㄱ=속
ㅍ+ㅏ+ㅌ=팥
You can technically put any consonant underneath any word. It is correct. Just some words might not be words. That's why you'll just have to memorize vocabulary for that.
Q: ㅇ makes a different sound when put under as a bottom consonant?
A: Yes. When put in front of a vowel, it takes on the sound of the vowel. However, when it is put under the word as a bottom consonant, it makes an "ng" sound.
ㄱ+ㅗ+ㅇ=공 ("gong")
ㅂ+ㅏ+ㅇ=방 ("bang")
Q: I heard there are some special bottom consonants.
The double consonants, ㄲ, and ㅆ can be put under as bottom consonants.
ㅂ+ㅗ+ㄲ=볶
ㅇ+ㅣ+ㅆ=있
There can be crazier ones like ㄱㅅ, ㄹㄱ, ㅂㅅ, ㄹㅁ
ㄴ+ㅓ+ㄱㅅ=넋
ㅇ+ㅣ+ㄹㄱ=읽
ㄱ+ㅏ+ㅂㅅ=값
ㅅ+ㅏ+ㄹㅁ=삶
If you can read Hangul now, yes, prounounce it exactly as you see it.
