After talking to her boss, Qri went to read everything about the Kwang case. She took some pills for her hang over and drank lots and lots of coffee. She knew she had not much time because the police are interrogating her client. If she talks then it’s the end of her case. After learning enough about the case, Qri rushed to the police station where her client is being held. Her client was about to talk. It’s a good thing she came in the right time.    

This is her first time meeting Ham Eunjung in person. She was in the middle of the Han case when the news broke out about Patrick Kwang. It’s a high profile case but she knew that Tiffany will not accept this case if given the chance. Yes, it will be good exposure given that the media is crazy about it but they would rather be in the opposite side of this case. She knew that after today, she will be the second most hated person next to Ham Eunjung.

They have been seating for a good 10 minutes without anyone breaking the silence. By looking at Ham Eunjung, she knew she will be a difficult client. Difficult clients tend to waste time. Time is money. The more difficult the clients are, the more they waste her time, the more she earns. But it’s a different case for this one because she’s not earning any cent out of this pro bono case.

With one look she can tell if her client is guilty or not. But for Ham Eunjung, she cannot read her.

“What happened the night of Patrick Kwang’s death?”

Her client does not seem to want to open .

“Did you do it? Did you kill Patrick Kwang?”

Again, no response. Usually, they will be defensive or will have a repulse reaction but her client gave off nothing.

“Are you guilty?”

Seeing that she cannot get anything from her client, Qri took a deep breath and stood up, “I see that this meeting is going nowhere. Let’s meet again tomorrow.” She then gave one last look at her client and said, “Look, you don’t want to be here, neither do I. But we don’t have a choice because this case is thrown at me. So I will be your lawyer no matter what.”

“Then why don’t you just decline? Everyone thinks I’m guilty.”

It’s the first time Qri heard her client’s voice. She glanced at her client who is still looking down at the table. She sounded monotone but Qri is very observant. She has been trying to read her client the whole time. There is something in her voice. It’s not sadness or guilt. Hopeless. Like she has already given up. Indeed, the most difficult client.

“I am your lawyer. I will be representing you whether you like it or not. Honestly, I don’t care if you are guilty or not because I know I have never lost a case. And I am not going to let you or anyone else ruin my record.”

“What good does it gets?”

Qri can’t help but smile. Finally, her methods worked. Eunjung is type of client who has resigned to whatever the circumstances may be. In short she has given up. She knew that trying to talk some sense or logic to her client would not work. So she tried to act like she didn’t care.

“You get to walk out of here and clear your name.”

“Clear my name?” Eunjung let out a dry laugh. “Everyone already thinks I did it. Even if I walk out there and ‘clear my name’ people will still think I’m guilty unless they find the real culprit.”

“So what are you saying?” Qri asked trying t push her luck.

Eunjung looked straight at her and said, “I’m not guilty. I didn’t do it. I didn’t kill Patrick.”

Qri sat back to her seat and said, “Then tell me what happened that night.”

“Didn’t you read the reports?”

“I have but I wanted to hear it from you.”

“Pretty much it’s the same.”

“Reports are written by someone else. I wanted to hear it firsthand. Every single detail about that night. I’m sure it’s the night you’ll never forget.”

Eunjung gave a long look at her lawyer. She took a deep breath and open to talk. Qri took out her recorder and a pen and paper.

 “You’re new here.”

Jiyeon who was reading Patrick Kwang’s case looked up only to find Park Hyomin in front of her. Obviously she is much more beautiful in person. She was starstruck for a second. If it was a different circumstance, she might have asked for the reporter’s signature and for a picture. But she knows that this lovely reporter is only here to snoop for information. The detective ignored the reporter and went back to reading the case.

“I’m Park Hyomin from the Tonight’s News.” Hyomin extend her arm but was ignored by the detective. She smirks. Clearly the word about her has gone around the police station. She knew she would not get information so easily but nothing has stopped her. “Nice to meet you, Detective Park.” Hyomin said while reading the detective’s name.

“Patrick Kwang’s case. Hmm…” Hyomin sat at the edge of Jiyeon’s desk. “You must be the officer assigned to interrogate Ham Eunjung.”

Jiyeon tried to ignore the reporter but she must admit that she is good. She is really experienced in getting information.

“I heard she got herself a lawyer. Is it true that Hwang-Lee Partnership is representing her?”

Hyomin watches the detective’s every move. “Is there a way I can interview the Ham Eunjung?”

“No.” Jiyeon briefly said and return to the file. Hyomin knew that the detective is just pretending to read. She knew she got into her.

“Well it’s freedom of press.”

“She’s… not available.”

“Oh… is she being interrogated or meeting with her lawyer?”

“Park Hyomin, what are you doing here?”

“Oh Detective Cha. Nothing, I was just chatting with this new detective.”

“Well I need to talk to my partner. Will you excuse us?”

“It’s nice to hear that you have a new partner Detective.” The reporter stood up and looked at Jiyeon, “Its nice chatting with you Detective Park. Let’s do this again next time.” Hyomin said before walking away.

“I’m sorry. I…”

“It’s ok. Did you say anything?”

“Nothing. But she can be pretty nerveracking.”

“Don’t worry. You’ll get used to it.”

“About the case…”

“Did you find something?”

The young detective nod her head.

Hyomin had a smirk plastered on her face before going out of the station.

“Earlier today it is said that Ham Eunjung is meeting with her lawyer. I got this information when I went to the police station myself. The well experienced and respected Detective Cha Seung Won and his partner, newly appointed Detective Park Jiyeon were assigned to interrogate Ham Eunjung where they failed to get a confession. This is a high profile case and the Chief of Police has decided to assign a newly appointed detective to this case. Everyone, I urge you to share your sentiments.”

All eyes went to the new detective.

“I’m dead.”
