Surprise

Now and Then

Jaemi was especially detached the next day during her Adidas photoshoot. She had decided that she would never speak or think of anything that happened the night before ever again. She was going to pretend as if it never happened. The photographer thought her emotionlessness translated nicely into the pictures, making her look like she was too cool to be wearing the clothes. Miyoung wanted to cheer her up with news about Hyuk’s early arrival, but she didn’t want to ruin his surprise, so she forced herself to stay quiet and hoped that Jaemi would return to her normal self soon.

Hongbin was quite jittery the next day during VIXX’s album photoshoot.  He was dying to tell s that he and Jaemi got back together the previous night, but he knew they would strongly disapprove, so he resolved to keep it a secret from them for now. But still, he really had to tell somebody, and he mistakenly thought that the next best person to tell was Yeona. They had gotten quite close with each other from all the time they spent when he filmed the drama and he considered her a good friend of his now.

Unfortunately, he couldn’t tell her until they were alone together, which was on Monday, the same day that he was going to see Jaemi again.

“Did something good happen?” Yeona asked, noticing his exceptionally bright smile that morning.

He nodded his head excitedly and laughed. He reminded Yeona of a puppy. “Something really good, but this has to stay between us. The hyungs would get mad if they found out, but I really want to tell you. Please keep it a secret, noona,” he requested. Yeona hoped that he couldn’t tell that his words made her heart race and her palms sweat. She nodded her head in agreement and casually looked through her makeup bag so that she wouldn’t have to look at him.

“Jaemi and I are going to start dating again,” he admitted with a love-sick expression. Yeona dropped the eyeshadow palette she was holding. The powder cracked and spilled out. She cursed herself for being so thoughtless as to not see this coming. He had been in love with this girl the whole time. He obviously wasn’t going to have a change of heart or anything just because they talked to each other more comfortably now.

“Omo, noona, do you need help?” he asked as he bent down to help her clean up the mess. His hand brushed over hers, sending electric jolts up her arm.

Suddenly, the door opened and Jaemi quickly walked through, trying to not make eye contact with Hongbin. His face lit up at the sight of her while Yeona’s expression darkened significantly. Hongbin was such an angel, and the girl was a little devil, albeit, a very pretty devil, but a devil nonetheless.

“Hey Jaemi, do you want to run lines together?” he asked, seeing her pull her script out of her bag.

She shook her head and shoved her earbuds into her ears. Hongbin furrowed his brow.

“Jaemi, is there something wrong?” he asked concernedly. He couldn’t understand why she would be ignoring him. She made a show of turning up the volume and Hongbin took the hint. He tried to brush it off that maybe she was really tired or having a bad day, but he still couldn’t help but feel kind of hurt that she was acting so cold towards him, of all people.

Hongbin continued to glance in her direction to see if she was looking at him, but her eyes were glued to the script. He opened his mouth to say something to her, but decided against it. Yeona wanted to gag. She wished he would see how bad she was for him and that he would look towards somebody who truly cared about him.

Over the next two days, Hongbin tried, and failed to get Jaemi’s attention again. She’d only ever give him simple one or two worded replies and he was at a loss about what was wrong. He didn’t think he did anything to make her mad at him.

“Are you serious?” Jaemi asked Soeun incredulously while laughing. He automatically looked in her direction and coincidentally made eye contact with her. He smiled brightly at her and waved and she pressed her lips into a thin line and quickly looked away. His eyes lingered on her for a few more moments, hoping that she would look back at him and smile as if it was all a joke.

“Why are you doing this to yourself?” Yeona asked Hongbin.

“Hm? What am I doing to myself?” he answered, snapping out of his daze.

Yeona sighed and shook her head disapprovingly. “Nevermind.”

“I’m hungry, eonnie. Do you want to get something to eat with me?” Jaemi asked Soeun.

“Oh, sorry Jaemi. I just ate,” Soeun replied. Jaemi shrugged and went to the lunchroom by herself. Hongbin immediately got up and followed after her. Yeona stared at his retreating figure with the same look that he had when he was staring at Jaemi only moments ago.

Jaemi heard Hongbin come into the lunch room as she scooped rice onto her plate. She quickly dumped whatever else was in front of her onto her plate and tried to leave without talking to him. Unfortunately for her, his sole purpose for coming to the lunchroom was to talk to her. He stood directly in front of her, blocking her path. She took a step to the right and he took a step to the left to prevent her from leaving.

“Excuse me,” she said without looking at him. He tried to hide the hurt in his eyes.

“We need to talk,” he stated. He was determined to find out why she was acting so weird around him.

“Move,” she demanded harshly, finally looking him in the eye.

He was the slightest bit scared of her in her angry state, but he also felt a sense of comfort from being so used to her in her angry state. He knew that the better option would be for him to move out of her way, but he really needed to talk to her. Against his better judgement, he decided to take her by her hand and drag her to a more private place for them to talk.

“Move,” she demanded again while trying to push him out of the way.

“Not until you tell me what’s wrong,” he replied.

Jaemi put down her plate and crossed her arms. “You won’t move. That’s what’s wrong. Now move.”

“Jaemi, please,” he pleaded. “Tell me what’s wrong. I know you’re avoiding me.”

“I’m not avoiding you,” she refuted.

Hongbin raised his eyebrow at her cutely. She subtly bit her lip to stop herself from smiling. “Oh really? So do you just never make eye contact with or talk to any of the guys you love?” he half joked.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she replied defensively. “Now, if you’ll excuse me.”

He stuck his arm out to stop her from leaving and pulled her in for a hug. “Remember, Jaemi? Friday night? You were drunk and you hugged me like this and you told me that you missed me. And since then you haven’t said a word to me or looked at me once except for when we film together. Do you know what I’m talking about now?”

She pushed him away and shook her head. “No, I don’t. I have absolutely no clue what you’re talking about.”

“You kissed me, Jaemi. You kissed me and you told me that you loved me that night!”

“No, I didn’t!” she argued. “The last time I did that was when we were in high school. Move on, Hongbin. We can’t be together anymore.”

Hongbin’s heart shattered. He couldn’t believe that even though she kissed him and accepted his confession, she was still going to push him away like this. “Why, Jaemi?” You said it yourself. You missed me and you love me. Why can’t we be together if we love each other?”

Jaemi shook her head again and opened to answer him when the door suddenly opened. Miyoung stood in the doorway with Jaemi’s cellphone.

“Oh, there you are. I was looking all over for you! Hyuk was calling you and I didn’t think you wanted to miss his call,” she told Jaemi with a smile. “I’m going on my lunch break now. I’ll be back in an hour.”

Jaemi gratefully took her phone from Miyoung while Hongbin’s expression darkened.

“This is why we can’t be together,” she told Hongbin smoothly before answering the call.  “Hyuk! I missed you. You haven’t called me in so long. How are you?” Hongbin glared at her while she talked to Hyuk. He couldn’t believe that she had tricked him, yet again, into thinking that she was in love with him and not Hyuk.

“Wait, Hyuk. What was that? In the background. Somebody said something about a flight…in Korean. Are you at an airport right now?” she asked hopefully. Hongbin hated how her eyes sparkled when she talked to Hyuk, but he still wished that she would look at him like that again.

“Uh, I gotta go now. Bye!” Hyuk hung up curtly. He let out a breath of relief. Jaemi was too observant for him. He went out to the pick-up area to wait for Miyoung to take him to Jaemi’s apartment.

Jaemi was certain that she heard Korean voices in the background, but she was also certain that Hyuk was taking his finals this week and there was no way he would skip those.

The door opened again to reveal a staff member. “Hongbin, Jaemi, you’re both needed on set.”

“Ah, ok. Thank you,” Jaemi said politely. It angered and amazed Hongbin how calm she sounded. He wouldn’t be surprised if breaking hearts was a normal thing for her; he was just surprised that she wasn’t more affected by the fact that she completely shattered his for the second time.

---

After the agonizingly long day of filming, Jaemi was actually glad for once to return to her apartment. She couldn’t wait to take a long shower and go to sleep. Her friend, Jia, called her just as she stepped out of the elevator. She walked down the corridor and listened to Jia explain her need for Jaemi to be her model. Jaemi laughed and agreed to model her newest collection of evening gowns as she entered the passcode to enter her apartment.

Hyuk heard Jaemi laughing and unlocking the door. He held his breath and pressed his back against the wall even more. Jaemi walked into her apartment, still talking on the phone, completely oblivious to the fact that he was hiding just around the corner. He waited until she turned the lights on to jump out and scare her.

“Ah!” she shrieked, almost dropping her phone. Hyuk burst out laughing at her reaction.

“What was that? Are you ok?” Jia asked worriedly.

“Yeah, yeah, I’m fine,” Jamie replied trying to catch her breath from the scare. She jokingly glared at Hyuk and smiled widely and said, “It was just a big bug. A big, annoying bug. I’ll have Miyoung call you tomorrow. I need to take care of the bug. Bye!” She put her phone down and continued to smile at Hyuk, not believing that he was really there.

Hyuk smiled back at her and said, “Hi Jaemi. I missed you.”

Jaemi broke into an even wider smile and jumped into his open arms. He kissed her deeply as she wrapped her legs around his waist. He waited four months for this and it was worth every minute of pain and suffering that he went through to take his finals early. Jaemi couldn’t stop smiling. Hyuk was the only one for her and she was sure of it.

She couldn’t help but break away from the kiss and ask, “What are you doing here? Aren’t you supposed to be taking finals this week? Why didn’t you call me earlier?”

“I was just here to scare you. And now that that’s done, I’m going to fly back,” he joked. She playfully hit his shoulder and kissed him again. He started walking towards her bedroom while she kissed his jawline.

“Wow I think this is going to be a record for the shortest amount of time between seeing each other again and having . We should celebrate,” he joked with her.

She couldn’t help but laugh at his dumb joke. He smiled even more hearing her laugh. He carried her into the bedroom and the two of them had a fun night together.
