Present

Footprints in the Snow

December is icy wind cutting through thin-but-fashionable jackets and white snow turning into gray slush under the feet of everyday life. Christmas is annoying jingles in every store and taking display cases home for a kiss under the mistletoe. Working on Christmas used to be bittersweet because Yixing made extra money but had no time to buy presents. Now it's bittersweet because he has no one to buy presents for.

So after the rush of couples on romantic dates, after his manager and coworkers leave, he stands in the deserted cafe and stares at the falling snow outside, wondering if he too should leave.

As he wipes the counter one last time, he thinks of what's waiting for him in the apartment: an emptiness just like this, but a bit more depressing. He throws the rag into the sink and washes his hands. The warm water makes him realize how cold he is- his numb fingers tingle as if coming back to life and he waits for it to spread to the rest of him.

A sudden twinkling of the door bell shocks him and when he turns around, he's met by a tired looking man. Snow is melting in the man's black hair and his cheeks are rosy from the cold, but his doe eyes seem to be missing something. He looks like a beautiful doll that belongs on the dusty shelf of an antique store, so out of place under the cheerful and cheap fluorescent lights of the cafe.

“Are you still open?”

The glassiness in his eyes reflect the emptiness in Yixing's life and he finds himself saying, ”Yes, but there's not much left. What can I get you?”

“Coffee, please,” the man says as he settles into- crumples into- a seat near the window.

Yixing leans over the counter, reaching for the coffee pot and smiles, happy for once that he forgot to dump it out when cleaning up. He fills a chipped mug and walks over to the man, whose fingers absently toy with a keychain. Yixing spots the name “Luhan” printed on it, a slight smudge on the corner.

He sets the cup down. “Merry Christmas.”

The man, Luhan, tears his eyes away from the snowflakes dusting the sidewalk and looks at him as if surprised to see him there. “Huh?”

“My treat,” Yixing clarifies.

“Christmas is supposed to be this happy holiday,” Luhan says, staring back at the snow. “But look at us. It's pathetic. You- what's your name?”

“Yixing.”

“You, Yixing, you're working by yourself. And I'm here, drinking coffee by myself.”

And Yixing decides it's fate that led him to stay late so this stranger can have someone to talk to. He latches onto that idea quickly, hungry for the feeling of importance. “We're not alone. Not really,” he offers.

The other man takes a sip of the coffee. “You know what I've realized? Whenever someone dies of cancer in a book or movie, people always say it's cliché. They want to watch others die from more interesting and unique ways. Isn't that sick?” Luhan chuckles bitterly and Yixing doesn't reply. “But when it happens in real life, people cry and talk about how he was a fighter. They turn him into an inspiration, a lesson.” His voice remains flat, his eyes remain blank, but there's a slight tremor- a low rumbling before the avalanche. “Why can't we just keep him as a normal boy who cried when he was in pain, who wanted to give up but wanted to live and then died anyway?”

Yixing stares at the snow and tries to see what's so mesmerizing about it.

“I miss him,” Luhan whispers to the cup of stale coffee.

“What's his name?”

“Minseok.”

Chapter 4: Lately I've been feeling the need to read sad fics but I haven't had the chance to find them so when I saw this, I expected the waterworks. It's Xiuhan anyway so the angst is coming from real stuff if you know what I mean.

But I was surprised to see how you turned it into something realistic where forced drama is non existent. That long narration from Luhan is so heartfelt and while it pains me to visualize him in this scene, I actually appreciated how patient Yixing was in listening to him, letting him tell his story not only to be heard but also so he can deal with what he has gone through, even if it means recounting the pain and the heartache. Yixing's a good choice as sometimes it is comforting to share a part of yourself to complete stranger who wouldn't have the chance to judge you for who you are and what you did and what has happened to you.

I'm really proud of Luhan here, so brave and so strong. But I'm sadder for Minseok cos for sure he didn't want to leave Lu behind but life is too cruel. I just wish they will have another shot at love in the afterlife.

I didn't drown in tears but this surely got me thinking alot. Thanks for writing my otp dear.

Chapter 4: Extra notes: I laughed out loud at the part when Minseok was pointing at a deer and saying how the deer was luhan and he was santa, riding him. (I got weird stares from my sister. she probably thought I'm stupid or something lol) but then as the ending of the "Present" part approaches, few tears started flowing down of my eyes like I was some sort of a psychotic idiot that was laughing like a seal just a few moments ago but is currently crying like a toddler. (and istg my sister laughed at me and openly stated that i was a retard lmao)

You have a very special writings skills and there's still a room for improvement. Hope to see you physical books in the near future!! :D

While I was looking at your stories, to be honest, I was really hesitated to read but then seeing this one's description got me curious. And I did, most definitely, not regret reading this. I'd say it somehow helped change my (un)fondness of stories. Would I recommend? Of course!
PS: I'm still reading Danse Macabre and I'd probably post 2 ratings. One halfway to the story and the other one when I finished it. (Because it's long and I doubt 2000 characters would fit my rants and comments lmao)

Yassss. This is the last part and I really hope this helped you. T.T

Chapter 4: Plot 4.5/5 [I really love the plot of this story. It gave me various reactions and emotions as I was reading it. At first, I thought that Luhan was being a huge despicable who broke up with his boyfriend and then complains about how he misses him and stuff. But then as he narrates about his past to a stranger, it made me realize how much he had gone through ever since he met the love of his life. He had to hide his uality, lower down his pride to get monetary help from their parents, and what hooked me the most is that he had to look strong for Minseok - who was, in return, being strong for him - even though he wanted to break down and cry at how in just a blink of an eye, their life was falling apart. I also liked the fact that Yixing, though he was a complete stranger to Luhan, still listened to the latter and not find excuses to go back to the counter or something. So, although this story was short, it definitely caughed my heart.]

Fak. Turns out this constructive criticism of mine was over 5000 characters or something. But anyway, this is the second part. :)

Chapter 4: Grammar: 4/5 [There was actually nothing wrong with your grammar. I just wanna give you a huge hug for your style of choosing words to use because it's not redundant and it's pretty easy to absorb and understand.]
Capitalization: 4.5/5 [Nope. Nothing really wrong.]
General Errors 3.5/5 [A few errors that were really unnoticable but there were some kind-of-noteworthy mistakes on the future part but to tell you the truth, it doesn't affect the story at all (I just wanted to let you know...?)]

OTL I had to separate this into two because it was over 2000 characters. T.T
