Chapter 1 - Love Found

Three Hearts and a Single Beat

Three years, the figure outside the gates of the large infrastructure of the educational institution sighed. His dark eyes were trained on the huge glass windows on the walls. Three years, he repeated in his head and let out a tiny smile.

The physical features of the said figure were nothing to drool over. Or at least, that was what the very same individual thought. In actuality, he was of a tall structure with the muscles in all the right places. His hair was of a dark ebony tone, his skin healthily fair and his lips full and freshly colored. His adoring bunny teeth added more to the attractiveness of his face. But these were not his best traits. His best traits, which he had no idea of, were his eyes. They were dark in chrome but there was a strange luster to it which could captivate anyone and anything. (At least that was what his best friend had once said)

And what was the name of this mysterious character that was standing out in front of the gate under the blossoming pink petals of the cherry trees despite the bustling of the other students beside him? Plainly speaking, he was Jeon Jungkook.

He didn’t mind that he seemed strange, staring at the building as if he had never seem such a huge structure before. Which wasn’t true. Jungkook had seen even bigger. After all, he had spent the last three years in America. So such structures didn’t impress him that much. What impressed him, or rather, what made him take a step back and calm his mind was the very fact that he would be meeting his best friend once again.

Jungkook let out a soft chuckle and walked into the grounds of the lively school which would define the next few years of his life. Fond memories flooded back into his mind as he made his way towards the building in the sea of students.

“You’re younger than me, Jungkookie,” the husky voice pitched from afar, “Call me hyung!” Seven year old Jungkook stuck out his tongue as he turned back. “No way!”

“Raindrops are blessings from heaven, Jungkookie,” the figure beside twelve year old Jungkook explained as his bright eyes never left the transparent raindrops splattering against the window sill, emitting small splats. Jungkook blinked several times taking in the full view of his best friend who always had an explanation for everything.

One of the most recent memories he had of his once best friend was the last day that they met before Jungkook left for America. The raven head was just fifteen years old.

“We’ll contact every day, won’t we?” Jungkook whined as the woman’s voice over the speakers announced the timings and the final boarding of his flight. “Jungkook,” his mother called from inside the doors, “We’ll miss our flight.”

Only the smiling face of his best friend filled his memories right at that moment. “Of course we will,” his best friend replied and squeezed his best friend’s hand for the last time. “Don’t worry, Jungkookie, you’ll be back in no time. I assure you of that. And yes, we’ll keep in contact always.”

Jungkook nodded and receded through the doors to board the flight. He would definitely miss him, his best friend – Park Jimin.

As Jungkook closed the remaining distance between him and the large building, he felt his phone vibrate in his pocket. He didn’t have time to wonder who it was because he had a pretty clear idea on who the caller would be.

“Jimin?” Jungkook’s smooth voice immediately sounded through the speakers to the other end.

“Oie,” the voice replied and Jungkook swore his chest hurt a little right at that moment. “How dare you call me in such an informal tone? I am still your hyung. Seriously, going to America didn’t do anything to your manners, did it?”

Jungkook simply chuckled.

“Anyway,” the husky voiced male continued, “Have you reached school? Where are you now? I wanna see how much the brat has grown.”

Jungkook rolled his eyes in good humor. “I’m pretty sure I’m so much taller than you, Jimin,” he spoke and quickly remembered to add “hyung”. “I’m right in front of the school entrance. Where are you?” The voice through the phone suddenly took a pitch higher. “Seriously? Alright, wait right there. I’ll be there in five minutes!” And before Jungkook could tell Jimin not to rush himself and take his time, the line went dead.

Oh well, he thought, I am also excited to see him.

As the lonely seconds ticked by, Jungkook looked into his phone and contemplated on his past. It wasn’t a big secret that the two of them weren’t as close as they were before. And why is that? The raven head thought and changed his focus from his mechanical device towards the sky.

That’s right, he realized, the distance drifted us apart.

In the first few months that Jungkook had settled in America, the two of them would correspond every single day, sometimes, even twice or thrice a day. But as the days passed, the workload of both the boys increased and the calls reduced to twice a week. And it kept on decreasing as the days passed even more.

Twice a week reduced to once a week. Then to twice a month. Then to once a month. And it kept on decreasing till Jungkook was no longer familiar with how Jimin sounded any more. And it filled him with guilt and regret. So when he called Jimin a month back, informing that he was returning back to Korea, he was surprised to hear his best friend’s voice. It had matured a little more than he had expected. Yes, it was still husky and higher pitched than that of his but he had to admit, it sounded deeper than what he had imagined.

What he also noticed during the past three months was that he had missed Jimin a whole lot more without him actually noticing. Yes, he kept himself distracted with all of his school work and co curricular activities when he was in America but he could never shake off the feeling that he had always left a piece of him back at home. Of course, like any other normal teenager who had a properly functioning mind, he had initially casted this off as him being over dramatic about the distance which separated him and his once best friend. But when he realized how much he was actually missing him, he considered the thought that it was not very normal.

Could it be? He had questioned himself at that time, that I love him?

Jungkook shook his head vigorously. “That’s probably not it. He’s my best friend. And nothing is changing that. And besides, he’s a guy. That’s kind of weird,” he justified with himself.

“Still,” he whispered. He wondered and turned his gaze back on the phone once again. Why was he feeling so nervous to meet his best friend again? And what was with that little skip in his chest when he heard his best friend’s voice earlier?

Whatever the case was, Jungkook had made a resolution that he would bridge all the distance that had formed. He couldn’t go on blaming the physical distance for the emotional distance that he himself had created, could he? No, he was matured. He knew that it was his fault for not making an effort. What he needed was to regain the lost times and return to what they were before.

Needless to say, not everything goes the way we plan. In fact, the more we plan something, the more Destiny tries to screw with our heads. So this detailed and elaborate arrangement went right out the window and got trampled under the footsteps of the sea of students when he heard that one single voice which he could make out from all the hurdle and excitement of the students. And this distinct voice was calling out his name.

“Jungkook!” the husky voice drowned out all of the other voices and as the called student shifted his gaze to get a look at the caller, he suddenly froze in his thoughts. Something was off. Why was he feeling so nervous? Why did his mere voice make his stomach do a little somersault? Why was he so damn excited to simply see him?

Yes, there was the fact that he hadn’t seen this person in three years. But that didn’t make up for the truth that he was much more excited that he was supposed to be. So why?

The glint eyed male finally got the chance to look at him and he couldn’t deny the weird feeling that he was feeling anymore. But what was this ‘feeling’? It wasn’t essentially bad. In fact, he felt his heart being calmed down as he saw the very same person who had called his name walk towards him through the crowd of people.

“Hyung!” Jungkook beamed at the elder. The elder simply grinned at him, making that familiar eye vanishing smile of his. That’s right. Jimin had changed. But ironically, he hadn’t changed at all.

Jimin’s eyes shone a little too brightly but Jungkook just brushed it off as him being excited to see him. “You really have grown a lot,” Jimin said and offered him an awkward pat on the shoulders.

Noticing the awkwardness, Jungkook made a quick comeback, “Puberty did me a good job. Unlike it did you,” he said, looking down on him, making a very obvious statement about his height.

“Yah!” Jimin slapped his arm. “I am still your hyung, you idiot!”

“Yeah yeah,” Jungkook laughed.

The long lost companions decided to skip the assembly and instead take a tour of the new school.

“The uniform looks good on you, you know?” Jimin commented as they walked past the library. “You think? It doesn’t look half bad on you too,” he said and really meant it. Gods, why was it so awkward to make even a small conversation with him?

“Oh yeah,” Jimin suddenly asked, “What department are you in, Jungkook?”

The younger knitted his eyebrows in unimpressed confusion. “Didn’t I tell you that already?” he asked. Jimin apologized saying that he had forgotten. Jungkook could only sigh in reply. “Fine,” he consented. “Literature.”

“Oh,” Jimin replied and scratched his chin as if in deep thought. “I guess you’re with Taehyung.”

Jungkook couldn’t help but be curious. “Who’s he?”

Jimin’s face immediately lighted up and he began to describe with much enthusiasm. “He’s my best friend,” Jimin began but quickly rephrased it. “What I meant was that he’s my other best friend. You’ll like him a lot. He’s a selective genius. Extremely talented but undeniably weird as well. I’ll introduce you to him some time.”

The younger couldn’t help but be amused. “Selective genius?” he quoted, “What on earth is that?”

Jimin too joined his amusement with a small chuckle. “Who knows? Yoongi hyung came up with that name. But I suppose it means being a genius only in some fields. I mean he’s awesome in certain subjects, athletics and vocal music but other than that, he’s practically an infant. And the fact that he’s clingy as a koala doesn’t help too.”

Despite not knowing who this ‘Taehyung’ person, Jungkook felt a pang of jealousy strike his overworking heart. “Oh, by the way,” Jimin suddenly interrupted his string of jealousy and asked a totally unnecessary question. “Do you have a girlfriend?”

The listener choked on his own saliva to hear such an unannounced question. Jimin smirked knowingly, “Should I take that as a ‘yes’?”

“Oie, oie,” Jungkook tried to clear up the misunderstanding as coolly as he could. “When does a cough from a choking person translate out as a yes? I don’t have a girlfriend and I want one.”

Jimin made an unreadable face. “Why not? Too cool for them?” he asked. Jungkook couldn’t comprehend the emotion that was going through his best friend’s mind so he just shook his head. “I thought you’d have one.”

The taller of the two clicked his tongue at this. “What about you then?”

“Oh, I don’t have a girlfriend.”

“May I ask why?” Jungkook asked as they made a turning to the right. It led them to a flight of stairs which would obviously lead them up to the terrace of the school. The noise of the excited seniors had receded to a slight murmur by then.

Jimin stopped in his tracks and answered in a grave tone. “I haven’t any clue.” Jungkook was left confused. What the hell was that supposed to mean? If he didn’t know, who was supposed to know? But then again, why was he feeling slightly elated over this?

The sullen atmosphere suddenly took a turn and Jimin regained his smile. “Come on, I’ll show you my favorite place in the whole school,” he said, leading Jungkook away from the stairs by grabbing his hand with his.

Jungkook felt his breath hitch. But he remained adamant, pulling back Jimin. “Jungkook?” Jimin called out confused by his silent stubbornness.

“Do... Do these stairs lead to the roof?”

Jimin’s confusion turned to consideration. Of course, how could he forget that his best friend loved the roofs of any place? “You wanna visit it?” Jimin asked, deliberately squeezing the taller’s hand. An innocent nod from Jungkook followed. And that was how they made their way to the roof of the school.

Jimin pushed open the door to Jungkook’s preferred place. “All these years,” Jimin said in a soft whisper, barely missing Jungkook’s earshot, “After all these years, I still haven’t a clue on why you love the roof so much.”

The light brightened every feature of Jungkook and he felt an undeniable pull towards the sunny plains of the terrace. Letting himself get dragged, he allowed his feet to move on his own. There was something about the open space of high places that he loved and lusted over.

A sudden change of the temperature warmed Jungkook’s stiff body and he took a deep breath. This was it. Somehow, he knew that he had found his spot in the entire school.

“How is it?” Jimin laughed, noticing the wide smile on his once best friend’s face. He had to admit, it pleased him to see his best friend so happy and liberated.

“I’m in love,” Jungkook mused and closed his eyes. Jimin chuckled exasperatedly. “Figures,” he smiled and added, “but this place is restricted for first years.”

Obvious confusion flooded to Jungkook’s usually blank face. “Why is that?”

“Because,” Jimin’s aura grew darker as he spoke. His eyebrows knit in sheer annoyance as he clenched his fist more for dramatic effect than anger. “An idiot tried to jump down the building, thinking that he would be able to survive just because he had a trampoline at the bottom.”

What. The. Hell?

“Seriously?” Jungkook asked in utter shock.

“I’m not an idiot,” a sudden interruption caused the two of the students to look to the highest point of the roof.

Jungkook felt his heart flutter a little to see the student above them. It was strange. He was bathed in the warm rays of the sun but he didn’t look like that much of an approachable guy. He had amiable features, his face was perfectly structured and his hair was of a whitish-purplish-pinkish hue. On any normal person, it would have looked weirder than a ten headed alien but there was something about him that didn’t make this very feature look weird on him.

But the most admirable feature, Jungkook immediately noticed, was his eyes. Those almond shaped eyes – with that honey gold hue.

As if on cue, the blasted wind blew past the trio, carrying along with it some stray petals and leaves.

“Oie, Taehyung! What the hell are you doing up here? Are you trying to get yourself expelled?” Jimin scolded. Jungkook saw the stranger, whose name he caught as “Taehyung”, yawn uninterestedly.

The newest member of the group spoke again. And it took Jungkook all his strength not to cave in to the sonority of his voice. “What the authorities don’t know, they won’t find out. And you won’t be telling them, now will you, Jiminnie?”

Jimin rolled his eyes. “Whatever,” he cussed, “just get down. I want to introduce you to someone.”

The so called Taehyung climbed down the ladder and turned towards the two students. He clapped his hands to dust off the dirt that he would have acquired from touching the ladder. After this, he gave one of the most handsome smiles that Jungkook had ever seen.

“This,” Jimin said, his husk laid voice calming him down once again. Jungkook displayed a winsome smile on his face as he continued to listen intently. “is Kim Taehyung. He’s your senior in Literature. Stay clear of him though. I don’t want his weirdness rubbing off of you.”

A wide, rectangular shaped grin plastered on Kim Taehyung’s face. And Jungkook thought that that was the weirdest thing he had ever seen. Weirdest yet one of the most genuine smiles he had ever seen. It was on par with Jimin’s adorable eye vanishing smile.

“It’s a pleasure to finally meet the great Jeon Jungkook,” the accepted alien spoke and grabbed Jungkook’s hand for a shake.

Jungkook showcased his natural blank face. “Wait, how’d you…?”

“Jimin here wouldn’t stop mentioning about you for the past two weeks. And since he doesn’t hang out with anyone else besides me and Yoongi hyung, and since I had never seen your face, I automatically assumed you were Jungkook ssi. Well, am I wrong?” Taehyung explained. Wow, Jungkook concluded from just the tiny discourse, is he a detective or something?

Jimin interrupted, “I hang out with Jin hyung and Namjoon hyung too! And not to mention Hoseok!”

Jungkook simply laughed. “It’s a pleasure to meet you too, Kim Taehyung,” he returned the courtesy. “Thank you for taking care of Jimin this entire time.”

“Nay, thy beloved companion proved not of any trouble by any means,” Taehyung replied. Jimin sighed, “What’d I tell you?”

But Jungkook didn’t find this weird. Unique, yes. But not weird. If at all, he found it amusing.

“So,” Taehyung continued, “I prithee, speak. Art thou an underling of mine?”

Jimin slapped the back of his head. “Speak like a human of this generation, you weirdo!”

Taehyung rubbed the area where Jimin had just hit him and pouted. “You’re mean.”

Jungkook had to interrupt the two. “Actually, I am your classmate. I skipped a couple of grades when I was in America. So I’m officially in the second year.” Jimin looked confused but proud. Taehyung was simply awestruck. “Wow!” he awed. “So you’re a genius, aren’t you?” Jungkook casually laughed it off. He didn’t like labeling himself a genius. He was simply a hard worker.

“Well,” Taehyung said. “I hope we get along,” he wished and gave him another smile. At the same moment, Jimin s his hands onto Jungkook’s right hand and curled up their fingers together. Jungkook could see that Jimin was saying something but he was too preoccupied with his thundering heart to make out what Jimin had said.

Jimin felt a small flutter in his stomach when he sub-consciously grabbed hold of Jungkook’s hand. Conscious of the sudden flickering, he announced that he wouldn’t let Jungkook be pulled into the weirdness. But his mind lingered on that tiny event. What was that? Did that always happen whenever he used to hold Jungkook’s hand?

Taehyung was honestly at a loss of thoughts to see Jungkook. He had to admit, Jungkook was not unhandsome. But he knew that he wouldn’t be ranked the top in a modeling agency or something. But there was something about him that made him lose his breath. Was that normal? Being speechless was something but that wasn’t the case. He was rendered thoughtless. And honestly speaking, even though Taehyung looked like he spaced out often at times, his thoughts never came to a halt. So when he felt this temporary pause in his ever working thoughts, he couldn’t help but grow even more interested in this new kid. He was a literature student. He needed to analyse the situation carefully. He needed to know the what, the how, and most importantly, he needed to know the why.

Unbeknown to the impossibly innocent party, right at that very second, the wave lengths of three separate hearts came to sync. It was a moment where three hearts came together and found a single beat.

Chapter 8: Read all the chapters in one go! Well, I had read it before, but just to refresh my memory. And refreshed it is. I love the Hobi Hyung of this story, he is new and exciting. I will leave the final pairing to you but I would like to see more interactions between Taehyung and Jungkook, because that really sparked my interest, they blend well for two people who shouldn't. Jikook is so cute... and Yoongi, oh! Yoongi. (It's okay, just don't break his heart into too many pieces *sniffs*)

Update soon, L!! :) Excited!
