The way you change my life

14

It couldn’t be happening. Not to her. Why to her??!!

Hyuna really never thought they would be meeting again here, in Seoul, in her school, with Hara as her home teacher. Oh no, she didn’t feel brave enough as to face her; not after what Hyuna had done to Hara.

Yes, they had a past. Well, more like her brother and Hara had a past. Yes, Junhyung and Hara once dated. And they broke up... and it was because of Hyuna.

As much as Hyuna and Junhyung don’t get along, and he makes her life a living hell at times, it would be a lie to say she hated him. That would be far from true because, actually, Hyuna loves her brother a lot. More than she would like to admit.

Since she was a child she had always admired Junhyung. Not only because of his good grades, his cool self —she’s never said it— nor his strength to face their parents when he wanted to move on his own; but because, even thought he never missed the chance to remind her how she had ruined his life, he had always been there for her. In a way or another, he has been there for her.

There was a time when she was 10 and wanted to go to a summer camp with her friends, but her parents wouldn’t allow her to. Luckily for her, Junhyung had found a summer job on a camp that happened to be the same she wanted to go. With that as a condition, they let her go. Later she found out he was working for free. Then another time, when she was 13, she wanted to go to a party but, again, their parents wouldn’t let her unless Junhyung was with her. Luckily for her, Junhyung was going to a party too. Or so she thought. Later that night she found out he had stayed in the car studying. There wasn’t a party.

There had been many situations like those, where Junhyung would take the blame for Hyuna or hide a secret of hers —which wasn’t free of course— and Hyuna didn’t know how to repay him, since she wasn’t supposed to know it. She knew Junhyung didn’t like his good actions to be acknowledged, especially if those were with her.  He always played the bad guy and she had decided to respect it. That’s why she had forced him to take her into his apartment, so he wouldn’t be forced to show that he wouldn’t mind living with her.

And for a lovely brother as him, Hyuna had always wanted the best. And there was included the right girl for him. All the girls had to cross a wall: Hyuna.

Junhyung’s first girlfriend was really pretty but she was a total . Always flirting with him in dirty ways; and Hyuna —who was only eight at that time— knew her brother didn’t really love her. They broke up after she had tried to make Hyuna drink alcohol —or so Junhyung thought.

His second girlfriend was when Hyuna was nine. She was a really sweet girl, very pretty, caring and full of aegyo. The only problem was on her head: there was nothing. The amount of her cuteness was the inverse of the amount of knowledge in her brain. Again, Junhyung didn’t really love her and he broke up with her when she had given Hyuna the wrong medicine and they have to run her to the hospital —the poor dumb girl never knew Hyuna never took anything.

Something similar happened with third and fourth. Third broke up with Junhyung when she “discovered” he was cheating on her; while fourth broke up with him because she didn’t want to have herpes. Both of them were Hyuna’s work.

And then Junhyung met Hara. Hara had been different from the previous girls. She was pretty but she wasn’t a ; she was cute, but wasn’t dumb; she was funny but wasn’t vile; and best of all was that Junhyung seemed happy with her. Their parents liked her, his friends liked her, she liked her and most important, Junhyung liked her. However, there was still something missing, not in her, but in Junhyung. Even if he was happy, he wasn’t irradiating happiness; he wasn’t walking on clouds, like she wanted him to. It was more like walking on mud. She didn’t know how to explain it. The only thing she knew was that Hara wasn’t what she wanted for her brother.

She needed to do something and she was going to do it. The big problem with Hara was that she wasn’t like the previous girls. Hyuna was sure she wouldn’t fall for her cheep tricks since she was smart enough as to discover it was a trick. That meant he needed something more elaborated, and Hyuna, being Hyuna, found the exact way to do it.

She made Kikwang accompanied her —yes, Hyuna had dragged him once again— to buy some magazines at a bookstore. After that Kikwang stole Junhyung’s phone while he was taking a shower and Hyuna sent a message to Hara with “I want to see you”. Hyuna knew that Junhyung send her that for her to come over. She knew Junhyung was going out so he wouldn’t interfere with the plan.

“Hi Kikwang” Hara greeted him when he opened the door. Kikwang greeted back and let her come in “Could you call Junhyung”

“He isn’t here, but you can ask Hyuna about it. She’s upstairs. I have to go. Bye” and then he left, knowing that Hara would go upstairs as he had told her to. After closing the door, Kikwang ran to the garage and send Hyuna the cue.

Following the plan, Hyuna waited patiently until she heard Hara’s steps near Junhyung’s door. Just then she walked out, with a bunch of magazines on her hands.

“Hyuna! What were you doing there?” Hara asked a bit confused. Hyuna turned around fast and hid the magazines behind her, surprised face as if she had being caught.

“Oh, I... nothing. I-I was cleaning” damn big lie. She didn’t have to pretend being nervous because she already was.

“Cleaning, eh?” Hara asked while narrowing her eyes and crossing her arms over her chest “What do you have there?” she asked trying to look what was in Hyuna’s hands.

“Oh, this... it’s nothing. Junhyung said he would help me with math so I was taking my books back” another lie, but it was meant to be it.

She tried walking out, but Hara wouldn’t let her “Junhyung would never help you by doing your homework” he narrowed her eyes at Hyuna “what do you have there?”

Hara insisted again, and Hyuna was sure she wouldn’t let her take another step if she didn’t show her what was in her back. Feeling defeated, Hyuna had no other choice than to give her the magazines.

“W-where did you found this?” Hara stammered as she stared at what Hyuna had given her. Hyuna bitted her lower lip and shook her head, denying answering. “Did you found these on Jun’s bedroom?” Hyuna remained quiet. “HYUNA! Di you?” this time Hara dropped the magazines and held her by the shoulders, shaking her a bit. Hyuna nodded.

Hara let her go and turned white as a paper. It took her a little bit to calm down. Once she did it, she turned around read to leave. Noticing it, Hyuna followed her. There was still something she needed to do.

“HARA!” she yelled, but Hara didn’t stop. Hyuna had to run on her way and stop her by standing on the door. She took a deep breath and looked at Hara with nervous teary eyes.

“Don’t tell him I know it. Please, don’t tell him” she begged. Hara tried to walk past her, but Hyuna stayed still on the door, begging her once again “Please! Don’t do it”

“Don’t worry, I won’t do it” Hyuna trusted her. She knew Hara wouldn’t say anything. Which meant her plan was completed. She moved to the side and let Hara leave.

Few minutes after that, Kikwang appeared from the kitchen.

“And the Oscar to the best actress is for...” she started while wiping away a tear.

“Of course, you” and he completed.

“Thank you, thank you; but I wouldn’t be able to do it without m great friend and director of this movie, Kikwang” she said dramatically and they both bowed to the imaginary audience.

“But seriously, that was just genius” Kikwang said as he plopped down on the couch. “Please don’t tell him.” he faked her voice “It would have never occurred to me”

“How not, if she told my brother that I had found his gay collection, he would probably deny it which didn’t mean she would believe him but he would sure strangled me after she broke up with him”

After cheering with orange juice over their good job, they both took the magazines and threw it on the trash bin of the park when no one was looking at them.

Later that night, Junhyung arrived home, took his shower and changed into his pyjamas before coming down for dinner. He did everything as usual and nothing on his behaviour seemed different than usual. For a moment there, Hyuna thought they were still together and Hara hadn’t told him anything, but when their mom asked him to invite Hara to the weeding of their cousin...

“I doubt she’d want to go. She broke up with me” he sad and continued eating.

Hyuna had done his job right.

That happened three years ago. Since that day, they hadn’t seen Hara ever again. Until now.

“Why didn’t you tell me she was our teacher??!!” she hissed in a whisper to Kikwang after pinching his arm really hard.

“Because I just found out yesterday!” he hissed back at her while rubbing his sore arms.

“Oh! I’ve heard there was a new student today” Hara’s voice brought both Kikwang and Hyuna back to reality. The teacher had been talking and laughing with the rest of the class for a while, but they hadn’t paid attention to her; until now.

Every head turned to Hyuna and she had to stand up to introduce herself to the teacher. As soon as she lifted her face to see Hara, Hyuna noticed she had a surprised expression but she soon recovered.

“There you are, please introduce yourself”

“Ah... well... my name is Yong Hyuna and, well, I’m fifteen and I’m from Busan” Hyuna stammered after clearing . She was nervous, more than before and she laughed awkwardly “please take care of me” she said this last fast and then sat down again.

After that Hara gave them few indications about their classes and then left to let another teacher —who had just came in—start with math class. And Hyuna was so glad to learn she was just their homeroom teacher and they didn’t have a single class with her since she was a second year teacher.

The rest of the day wasn’t that good either. In first, third and seventh period the teachers had assigned her to work with a student who wasn’t at class at the moment, so she had to be alone for the day. The teachers at second and fourth period were really strict and had found a disliking for her already because she had been talking with Kikwang. Fifth period was a bit relaxed and sight period was stressed too. And as if that wasn’t enough, al lunch break she had tripped over her own foot and dropped the trail full of food over the Arabian looking guy. It had been an accident and the other seemed to understand it. However, as lucky as she was, he seemed to be popular and soon Hyuna found herself being hated already. Not by him, but by who she supposed to be his fans.

After almost eight hours of suffering, the bell of the school sounded loudly, indicating the end of the day; the end of Hyuna’s ed up first day at a new school.

She had wanted to hang out with Kikwang after class, but he couldn’t since he had to help his mom at the store, so that left Hyuna to walk home alone. However, when she started to walk she realized she wasn’t in Busan, it was Seoul and she didn’t know Seoul. Crap. She hadn’t paid attention to the way since Junhyung was driving and she was trying not to vomit the milk she had just drunk.

And worst part was that her phone’s battery had died few hours ago so she couldn’t call her brother to pick her up or at least guide her. That left her no other choice than to walk down street while trying to figure out the way back to Junhyung’s apartment.

She had been walking for almost fifteen minutes, but she still couldn’t remember the way. Suddenly, she saw the Cafe where Junhyung had bought his coffee and her milk across the street, and it was like a light for her. She was sure Junhyung was a usual customer of that place, which meant they could have his number or something that helps her finding her way back home. She was about to cross when she felt someone pulling her by the upper arm, making her stumble back and almost falling, but the other person supported her.

“Yah! Would you see where you go?” scolded a throaty voice. It was a guy.

“I-I’m sorry... I didn’t...” Hyuna didn’t understood what had happened until she saw the pedestrian’s light on red and many vehicles passing fast on the street. The same street she was about to cross. She could have died! O.M.F.G She almost died!!

“yah, are you ok?”

“oh, yeah... thank you”

Just then Hyuna turned to see the guy who had helped her. Not too tall, around her age and only a word that would describe him right: handsome, damn handsome. The guy was so attractive that Hyuna couldn’t help but to stare at him, admiring his features: black straight messy hair, big eyes, direct gaze and thin lips. He had a lot bit of baby fat on his cheeks, just the right amount to make him cute but still handsome.

“Excuse me” suddenly the guy was talking to her again “Now you can cross” he said with a light smile while pointing at the green light.

“Oh, he... yeah” ! She had been looking at him all this time and she didn’t even realize it. She walked fast until reaching the Cafe, not looking back even once —even though it was tempting. She didn’t resist and looked back just to see the guy entering the Cafe right behind her. He couldn’t be following her... right?

Without thinking much about it, Hyuna decided to ask the cashier about her brother’s number and, again, luckily for her they had it since he was a usual customer.

“How can you get lost?” asked Junhyung in disbelieve when she called him. She had to borrow the Cafe’s phone since she didn’t have much money “I thought you had paid attention to the road”

“Well, obviously I didn’t and I just got here yesterday. You can’t expect me to know the whole way back after just one ride” that’s right; he hadn’t even told her what bus she should take.

“Ok, ok. I can’t go pick you up right now, so you better pay attention” and he explained to her how to get back home.

She hanged up, thanked the cashier and walked out of the Cafe. She took a deep breath and tried remembering what Junhyung had said.

Take route 23 across the street; it’ll take you about 15 minutes to get to the park that’s near our building. That’s your stop, get off there and walk to home; be careful and pay attention to the road”

He had stressed the last part a lot and Hyuna knew he was right.

“Route 23, stop at the park, pay attention to the road; route 23, stop at the park, pay attention to the road” she was so concentrated chanting the indications under her breath to make sure not forget it that she didn’t notice that someone was ahead of her until she bumped into that person. “Oh, I’m sorry” she apologised and the other just smiled. For a moment there, Hyuna thought she would die of embarrassment: it was the guy from before.

He nodded and kept on walking, but Hyuna couldn’t help but to look at him again. He had smiled at her. Hyuna had ever seen a smile more enchanting than his.

Bump!

She bumped into a trash bin and almost fell.

In a fast movement she stood still, fixed her uniform and sat on the bench at the bus stop. With the corner of her eye she could see the back of the guy moving slightly: he was trying not to laugh loud at her.

Why did it have to happen to her? Making a fool of herself twice in front of the same person; the same ing attractive person. It had to be a curse or something else; maybe someone up there didn’t love her... that would be down there, then... whatever!!

Suddenly Hyuna felt a shy poking her on the shoulder. She turned to it and there he was again; the handsome guy.

“Route 23” he said pointing at a green bus; but Hyuna just raised an eyebrow, not getting what he meant. “Rout 23, stop at the park, pay attention to the road?” he repeated her chant trying to make her catch the line.

“Oh! Route 23!” she said out loud when she got what he meant and he just giggled at her.

In a fast movement she stood up and got onto the bus. She paid the fee and walked to the only two empty sits. She sat by the window and looked outside, trying to concentrate on the road until she felt the shy poking on her arm again. She turned around and her heart almost stopped: he was there again.

“I think you’ll need this” he said holding an ID: her ID. She gasped and took it from his hands, then looked at him suspiciously “It fell from your bag when you bumped into the trash bin I think” the suspicious look vanished and was replaced by a shamed look.

“I’m sorry, and, thank you” it was at moments like this that she wanted the earth to open and eat her alive.

“I’m guessing you’re new in town” he said carefully, almost shyly.

“deh... I just moved here yesterday and my idiot brother didn’t want to pick me up” for some reason it was easy to talk to him, even though they were mere strangers. “I’m Hyuna, by the way; Yong Hyuna”

“Jang Hyunseung, nice to meet you” he said shyly.

Jang Hyunseung; even his name was nice. And he seemed to be a really nice person, a bit shy, but nice.

The rest of the way they talked about little things like the road, Seoul’s traffic, bus routes, coffee shops and being new at the city. He said he had been in Seoul for three months now and, even though he had learned all the ways back to home, the rest was still new to him. Soon they were at the park and Hyuna’s stop. Hyunseung told her his stop was three more from there so they had to say goodbye.

Hyuna thanked him for the nth time —she had lost the count at five— that day and stood there until the bus turned a corner and got out of her sight.

She turned around and from there she could see Junhyung’s apartment building. She started walking to it with only one thought in her head.

I hope to see you again.
