Leo smiled slightly as he watched Sanghyuk set up their Christmas tree, the sounds of Hakyeon banging around in the kitchen acting as background music. Leo was tempted to offer to help his boyfriend, but the human just looked so adorable as he hung up the lights and ornaments that Leo didn’t want to interrupt. Besides, he liked observing during moments like this. It was these moments that reminded him that this was home, a safe place for him no matter who or what was lurking just outside the front door.
“Leo,” Sanghyuk called out, “do you want to put the angel on the tree?”
“Are you sure?” Leo questioned, getting up and making his way over, “I mean, what if I knock the tree over or something?”
“Don’t worry,” Sanghyuk smiled, passing the cat boy the angel, “I’ll lift you up.”
“Ok,” Leo nodded after a moment of thought.
Sanghyuk wrapped his arms tightly around Leo’s waist and lifted him up. Careful as could be, Leo placed the angel on the top of the tree. Once he was sure it wouldn’t fall off, he pulled his hand back and grinned at his work.
“It looks good, Leo,” Sanghyuk said, putting Leo back on the ground but not letting go, “good job.”
“Thank you,” Leo smiled slightly, a faint blush colouring his cheeks because Sanghyuk had whispered those words right into his ear.
“Whoa,” Hakyeon said when he came into the room a few minutes later, “the tree looks great, guys.”
“Sanghyuk did most of the work,” Leo was quick to point out, “I just watched.”
“Leo put the angel on the top, though,” Sanghyuk shrugged, pulling away much to Leo’s distain, “and that’s the most important part, right? The angel? Everything else is just extra.”
“No,” Leo argued, “the rest is just as important.”
“Well,” Hakyeon laughed, “I agree with Leo. Now come and try the cookies I made.”
Hakyeon headed back into the kitchen, closely followed by Sanghyuk. Leo watched them go, a joyous feeling in his gut that was building and spreading to the rest of his body. Yes, this apartment was his home, his safe place where he could be with the ones he loved and where he never had to fear the people who wished him harm. And it wasn’t just the Christmas season that was making him feel like that. He always felt this way, the season was just reminding him.
“Sanghyuk,” Leo whispered later that night as he curled up beside the human in bed.
“Yeah?” Sanghyuk replied, half asleep even though he’d only just laid down.
“I love you,” Leo told him, “thank you for finding me and giving me a home. Thank you for loving me and making me feel wanted.”
“I love you, too,” Sanghyuk smiled, wrapping his arms tightly around his boyfriend, “and you don’t need to thank me for any of that.”
“I know,” Leo nodded, “but….I want you to know how I feel, how much everything you’ve done for me means to me.”
“I love you,” Sanghyuk whispered one last time, pressing a soft kiss to Leo’s lips before drifting off to sleep.
“I love you so much,” Leo said before drifting off to sleep himself.
A/N: wow, this is…..kind of cheesy. I mean, it’s cute and sweet, but mostly cheesy.
