A/N: get the pitchforks ready, you’re probably gonna want to chase me down with ‘em after this.
The leaves crackled and shattered under the unsteady foot falls of the warrior. Wonsik tried to focus on that sound, on what was before him. Anything that wasn’t the sharp pain originating from his gut. He had made a promise to return to his loved one’s side and he’d be damned if he broke his promise this time.
He’d broken his promises so many times over the years when it came to Sanghyuk. He’d promised to be there for birthdays and anniversaries, for holidays and dates. More often than not he broke those promises, left Sanghyuk sitting alone at home.
To his beloved’s credit, he never he’d it against Wonsik. Sanghyuk understood that when the emperor called for his mightiest warrior, Wonsik had no choice but to come. Even if that meant breaking a promise to be there for Sanghyuk. Sanghyuk would always just smile and assure Wonsik that it was alright, that he didn’t mind.
Wonsik wondered how true those words were countless times. He wondered how Sanghyuk could still love him even when he could never be counted on to be there. He ended up coming to the conclusion that Sanghyuk’s heart was too full of love to hold any negative emotions.
Even in the end, when Wonsik couldn’t be by his side because he was needed by his king, Sanghyuk hadn’t held it against him. Sanghyuk’s brothers had, however. They sent Wonsik a nasty letter, damning him to hell for not being there in Sanghyuk’s last moments. They had forbidden him from Sanghyuk’s funeral, assuming that he could even attend. They had wished that he would die in battle for the pain he’d caused their baby brother, for all the nights Sanghyuk had spent alone.
Wonsik winced as his wounds pulled and reopened. He guessed that Sanghyuk’s brothers had almost gotten their wish. Wonsik was not going to die on the battle fields, but he was soon going to part from this world.
He just needed to get to Sanghyuk first.
With a great deal of pain, Wonsik opened the gates of the cemetery, stumbling through and almost falling to his knees as his legs started to weaken. With pure strength of will, Wonsik kept walking. He had promised that he would always return to Sanghyuk’s side when they first admitted their love, when they realized how dangerous Wonsik’s role in the military was. Of all his promises, this was the only one he had never broken and he would not break it now.
Sanghyuk’s grave soon came into sight and Wonsik pushed himself even harder, taking the final few steps needed to stand before the grave. Wonsik felt himself smile slightly, proud to have kept his last promise, before he fell forewords upon the grave.
The warrior’s breathing began to slow and he could have sworn that he felt his lover’s touch in those final few moments. He could have sworn that he heard Sanghyuk’s voice, calling out to welcome him home. This time for good.
A/N: …….so…….was the, um…..pitchfork warning…….needed…..? or…..and I good?
